CyHi Da Prynce On Kanye West: ‘He Pushes Me’

Big K.R.I.T.’s Return Of 4eva Mixtape Arriving On Monday

The release of the up-and-coming rapper/producer’s latest recording was delayed six days. By Jayson Rodriguez Big K.R.I.T. Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Indie LP : Return of 4eva Headliner : Big K.R.I.T. Key cameos : TBD Essential info : Big K.R.I.T.’s highly anticipated mixtape Return of 4eva was set to drop on Tuesday (March 22), but hours before its scheduled debut the Mississippi-bred artist’s manager sent a message over Twitter announcing that the project’s release was being pushed back until this Monday. You can’t blame the newly minted XXL cover star — he along with 10 other artists were selected to grace the front of the annual Freshman edition of the magazine — for taking his time: He’s producing, mixing and mastering each of the recordings himself. K.R.I.T. says he actually got his passion production via MTV. “I couldn’t afford beats,” he told Mixtape Daily. “I was 13 and I couldn’t afford to go to the studio and I couldn’t afford to pay for beats. So “MTV Music Generator” came out for PlayStation and that was it. I was like, ‘I done made it.’ I recorded to a karaoke machine, looping the ‘MTV Music Generator’ beat and that was the start. I was like, ‘I could make my own beats and rap? I can mass produce music on my own, I’m good.’ And that’s where it began.” Other Heat This Week

Gucci Mane Producer Drumma Boy Talks Duo’s Best Collabos

On the heels of club banger ‘I Don’t Love Her,’ beatsmith tells Mixtape Daily, ‘ I bring out the thinking side of Gucci.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Drumma Boy Photo: Courtesy of Drumma Boy Behind the Beats: Drumma Boy Drumma Boy has injected the game for years now with his bottom-heavy Atlanta (where he resides) beats splashed with a tinge of Memphis (where he was born) soul. He’s laid down tracks for everyone from the Cash Money Millionaires to comeback king Usher. Now, the veteran producer is shifting gears to the business side of things: He served as executive producer on Gucci Mane’s forthcoming effort, The Return of Mr. Zone 6, set to arrive on March 22. Mixape Daily caught up with Drumma recently to talk about his past collaborations with Gucci. Five-Star Stellar Hits “I Don’t Love Her” (featuring Rocko and Webbie) : “That’s one of the biggest Gucci records in the club,” Drumma said of the Zaytoven-produced lead number from Zone 6. “Hands down, the club goes absolutely ridiculous.” “Beat It Up” (featuring Trey Songz) : “The label didn’t get behind it [and] never shot a video for it,” he said of the Burrrprint (2) HD track. “I always tell Gucci that was one of his biggest songs and it could have been bigger.” “Worst Enemy” : “A lot of DJs still hit me to this day and tell me it’s one of his most substantial records,” Drumma said about the sobering State vs. Radric Davis record. “Just about his situation and what was going on and how he felt, I get a lot of reviews about the one, still.” “All About My Money” (featuring Rick Ross) : “People go crazy listening to that one,” he said. “Classical” : “It was something different that I tried, I have the live orchestra,” he said about the Radric Davis opener. “It’s fun to bring out different sides of people. I bring out the thinking side of Gucci.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Drumma Boy Gucci Mane

Lil Wayne Is ‘Entering Uncharted Territory’ In Hip-Hop, Lloyd Says

‘It’s like witnessing what rock and roll stars would experience,’ the ‘BedRock’ crooner tells Mixtape Daily of his longtime homey. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas Lloyd Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Lloyd R&B singer Lloyd has had a close up look at Lil Wayne’s career for some time now. The two collaborated on Lloyd’s “You” and “Girls Around the World” and later on Young Money’s breakout “BedRock,” which featured the former Murder Inc. star riding shotgun with Weezy, Drake, Nicki Minaj and company. Now, as the pair are working on their forthcoming projects — Lloyd’s King of Hearts and Wayne’s Tha Carter IV — the singer, who hopes to get the rapper on his new album, said the New Orleans MC is reaching rock-star status. “He’s entering uncharted territory, I think, for a lot of people in our generation in hip-hop history,” Lloyd told Mixtape Daily. “When Wayne walks into the building, it’s electric. It’s almost like witnessing, I would imagine, what rock and roll stars would experience earlier on in history. You don’t get to experience a lot of that in hip-hop, usually there’s a lot of hatred or a crabs-in-the-bucket mentality going on. But I think with Wayne, he’s overcome so much that the people are really embracing him across the board.” The “Lay It Down” singer has some good perspective in making that declaration: He attended Weezy’s first post-prison performance in Las Vegas and then rocked with him at the Bayou Classic, the annual football clash in Wayne’s hometown between Grambling State and Southern University. Next up, Wayne and director Hype Williams are putting the final touches on the rapper’s “6 Foot 7 Foot” video featuring Young Money member Cory Gunz. The clip was scheduled to debut on MTV last month, but was later postponed. The Bangladesh-produced standout is the first single from Tha Carter IV, Lil Wayne’s first release since completing an eight-month prison in New York for a 2007 gun bust. Kelly Clarkson Influenced By Prince, Aretha Franklin, Others For New Album

‘I record my last song on the 25th of this month and then we will be releasing the album!’ singer writes on Facebook. By James Dinh Kelly Clarkson Photo: Billy Ingram/ WireImage It’s been a while since we’ve heard some new music from Kelly Clarkson . But according to the “American Idol” alum, that’s all about to change very soon as she’s one track away from finishing her new album. While the 28-year-old songstress has previously described the project as ” Garbage-meets-pop-meets-Muse ,” the singer has now come forth to reveal that the she’s been influenced by some of music’s greats, including Prince, Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin, for the forthcoming LP. Taking to her Facebook on Monday to keep fans updated about the project, Kelly said that she’s one track away from completing her fifth studio album. “PS: I record my last song on the 25th of this month and then we will be releasing the album!” she wrote. “This album was influenced by Prince, Tina Turner, Sheryl Crow, Radiohead and there’s a little bit of a Country vibe/influence on a couple of songs.” While the big-voiced singer wasn’t part of the Grammys’ all-star tribute to Aretha Franklin on Sunday, Clarkson revealed that one of her favorite tunes from her recent studio sessions was inspired by the Queen of Soul. “Oh and also one of my favorites on the new album is highly influenced by Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. Eric Hutchinson wrote it … the album is gonna be a great pop record! I can’t wait for y’all to hear it!” she wrote. Although she partnered with acclaimed songwriter Toby Gad for two tracks, the singer tweeted to fans that she did not re-team with pop maestro Dr. Luke (“Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes”) this time around. Last October, the pop star participated in an impromptu Twitter Q&A , where she teased details about the new album. Not only has Clarkson recorded two duets for the still-untitled album, but she’s also announced that she’s ready to hit the road again. When we spoke to songwriter Claude Kelly last year, he said they’re working on something different for the new album. “Well, I wrote ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ for the last album, so we’re trying to take it up a level,” Kelly said. “She’s toured the world with that album. She’s experienced stuff, so whatever she’s going through right now: fun, good, the bad, the ugly — we want to put on that record.” What type of sound are you hoping to hear on Kelly’s new album? The Prestige: Jam Boy Magic Showcases One Of Hip-Hop’s Most Underrated Talents

Veteran MC Black Thought anchors mixtape from Money Making Jam Boys, in Mixtape Daily. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Kelly Marino The Roots’ Black Thought and ?uestlove Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : The Prestige: Jam Boy Magic Headliner : Black Thought, Dice Raw, Truck North, P.O.R.N. and S.T.S. Key cameos : Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Peedi Crakk Essential info : Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter has an extremely crowded plate on his hands. The Philadelphia MC appears nightly, along with the rest of the Roots, on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” And this past weekend, he and the rest of the legendary 215 crew once again hosted their annual jam session during the Grammy Awards festivities. While the Roots contemplate their next project, which according to drummer ?uestlove is still in the embryonic stages (check back in March, he said), Thought is finalizing a litany of collections that he hopes will see the light of day soon. “I’m working on an EP tentatively titled The Talented Mr. Trotter with B!nk (Kanye West’s “Devil in a New Dress”) and I been working an album Dangerous Thoughts with Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley) for the past few years. That’s still a work in progress,” he told Mixtape Daily. Last month, Thought and his new crew — the Money Making Jam Boys: Dice Raw, Truck North, P.O.R.N. and S.T.S. — released their 10 Deep (Kid Cudi, Donnis, Wale) sponsored mixtape hosted by DJs Mick Boogie and Terry Urban. The Prestige: Jam Boy Magic is anchored by Black Thought and once again showcases how the veteran MC is one of hip-hop’s most underrated talents. “Cheeba, Cheeba, this is Friday Night street fever,” BT spits on the MMJB standout “Friday Night Street Fever.” “The heat seeker, keep it cutting like a meat cleaver/ The grim reaper, I ain’t eating you ain’t eating neither/ The team leader, dream weaver/ Keep a mean diva.” “I just try to stay busy,” Thought said of his output. Clipse’s Malice Helps Fans ‘Appreciate’ What They Have In Debut Book

‘Every time I told the story, everyone was totally amazed,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting Cristopher Schafer and Samuel Rogers Malice Photo: Samuel Rogers and Cristopher Schafer Fire Starter: Gene “Malice” Thornton Clipse’s Gene “Malice” Thornton might not be a rookie, but the MC — who has blessed us with a bevy of healthy verses over Neptunes production throughout the years — is a first-time author, readying the release of his book “Wretched, Pitiful, Poor, Blind, and Naked.” Admittedly, a literary career wasn’t in the plans for the former armed forces member. But after a tumultuous period in his life that Malice said began in 2008 (he didn’t elaborate on the incidents; a year later, in 2009, longtime Clipse manager Anthony “Geezy” Gonzalez was charged with leading a multimillion-dollar drug ring), he had a story that he would repeat often, and the idea for a book arose. “Every time I told the story, everyone was totally amazed,” he explained. “The story is nothing short of phenomenal. I thought I was gonna be rapping, and I still rap; I’m gonna keep making music. But I had to stop what I was doing for a minute to really get this burden off my chest. And it’s basically the vehicle that’s gonna shed light on life and it’s gonna open up the eyes of any young person that’s aspiring to be, not just in hip-hop, but music, sports, doctors, lawyers, whatever your profession is. It’s just gonna help you be focused and learn to appreciate what you already have.” As the title suggests, “Wretched, Pitiful, Poor, Blind, and Naked” has a spiritual angle. Leaning on his faith, however, is nothing new, Malice said. Since the Brothers Thornton first arrived on the scene with their debut album (which was shelved by Elektra Records), their rhymes have been imbued with the Lord’s guide to living. “This thing just happened, but all of my fans know, and people who have listened to my music, they have always heard me referring to my faith, even from the first album, Exclusive Audio Footage, it gave some insight into my beliefs. I was just listening to a song form that album, I had an interlude called ‘The Prayer,’ and right after that, there’s a song called ‘Watch Over Me,’ and after I listened to that, it just confirmed who I am and who I already been. I think what happened was I strayed away from my faith and I wasn’t practicing it. I was doing what I wanted to do, whatever I felt like doing. Doing what everybody else was doing.” Now, he’s rededicated and preparing to put out his tome on Monday, Valentine’s Day. “A lot of people want more, more, more, and I think it’s just important that you stop and realize where you’re at right now and try not to take anything for granted,” he said. Nicki Minaj, Lil Kim Feud Is ‘Harmless,’ 50 Cent Says

‘Kim is the original, I believe, and Nicki is the right now,’ G-Unit MC says on Shade 45. By Jayson Rodriguez 50 Cent Photo: Jordan Strauss/ WireImage Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj’s war of words has died down considerably in the new year, following months of fiery sniping in interviews and songs. Queen Bee collaborator 50 Cent (“Magic Stick”), not one to shy away from differences with others, downplayed the rift between the feuding female MCs. In an interview on Shade 45’s “G-Unit Saturdays,” he spoke via phone about the beef with DJ Whoo Kid. “When I look at them actually competing, I don’t see anything,” 50 said. “I think it’s harmless. It adds an interesting story and other interests to them, ’cause Kim is the original, I believe, and Nicki is the right now.” When the pugilistic rapper was told his answer was surprisingly neutral — in addition to working with Kim, 50 is from Queens, New York, as is Nicki — he joked he didn’t want to get involved their battle. “How do you get in the middle of a girl fight?” he responded. Since New Year’s Eve, when Kim fired the last salvo at Nicki during a performance, the two Big Apple rappers have remained quiet regarding one another. Veteran MC Rah Digga recently headlined an all-lady lyricist concert in Los Angeles, and the former Flipmode Squad member said the feuding isn’t necessary. “To be honest, if you’re an artist and you’re just into the music, all that stuff is irrelevant,” Digga told Mixtape Daily . “All that stuff they’re fighting for has nothing to do with making good music or being an artist. It is what it is. It’s a fight about being a popular celebrity. It has nothing to do with music. And I don’t get caught up in that and I don’t deal with anybody in it.” Do you think Kim and Nicki have a reason to feud? Sound off below! Related Artists 50 Cent Nicki Minaj Lil’ Kim
