Jay Electronica Disguised His Voice To Avoid Hip-Hop Prejudice

‘I was embarrassed from being from the South,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Jay Electronica Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Hearing the commanding voice of Jay Electronica on the microphone, one probably couldn’t detect his New Orleans roots. Years ago, like many MCs from the South, Electronica experienced some hip-hop prejudice when people heard the Southern twang in his voice — so he started disguising it. “I would go somewhere — I would go to an open mic and when they heard my accent and not understand what I’m saying, it would just be a door-closer,” Jay told MTV UK on a recent trip to Europe. “I made a point in being able to speak in a certain way that I wouldn’t get the door closed on me. All of these things make me who I am now, you know. “I have to admit, you know, a few years ago, I wouldn’t have admitted this — or maybe I wouldn’t have been conscious of it in a way to admit or be embarrassed — but in my earlier years from when I first left home, I was embarrassed from being from the South,” he added. “Not in general, but as a rapper because all of the negative things that people in the States put on the South. Like, ‘The South, they’re slow. They move slow, they think slow, they’re less intelligent. They’re less exposed, they’re underexposed, they’re more sheltered.’ So as a rapper — I’ve been rapping since I was 10 years old — I always had a feeling of ‘I’m gonna show you’ because we down here doing it. Not that I was embarrassed necessarily — I don’t know if that’s the correct word — but I know that when I left home, if someone had heard my accent and heard where I was from, the door was immediately closed.” Electronica said he had to adapt and become a chameleon on the mic. While trying to break into the music industry, he moved between different cities such as New York, Atlanta and Chicago. “I kind of stiff-armed my roots for a couple of years,” the Brooklyn transplant continued of his journey. “Then my sister told me one day, ‘You know, you act like you’re ashamed of being from home.’ It was like a reality check. I checked myself. I mean, this is years ago, but now I’m at a place where I understand where I’m from. I understand my culture and I’m more proud to be from there than associate with somewhere else.” Despite trying to hide his roots early on, Jay thinks back to the early days of New Orleans hip-hop with a smile. “I’m from New Orleans and there’s a certain type of music,” he explained. “I come from a bounce culture — bounce music. You been to New Orleans a couple times, you probably heard of the bounce music. It’s a part of me; I grew up with bounce music. It’s call-and-response, it’s trance, it’s tribal, it’s communal, it’s African, it’s based in Africa … the energy of it.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Tyga Says ‘The Music Is Solid’ On New Mixtape

‘I’m a solid individual,’ Young Money MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Tyga Photo: Young Money This Week’s Main Pick Street King : Tyga Holding It Down For : Young Money Mixtape : Black Thoughts Real Spit : This tape has nothing to do with the Legendary Roots Crew’s lead MC — it’s all about Young Money’s West Coast rebel Tyga. “Basically, I named the mixtape Black Thoughts because when you think of the word ‘black,’ you think of great, confidence, individuality. I feel like the music is solid. I’m a solid individual. The music is solid. We put ‘thoughts’ behind it because basically all the music is things I think about, things people think about doing, things I’ve thought about doing or I’ve done. I put it all together and made Black Thoughts. ” Joints To Check For

B.o.B Talks New Single ‘Nothin’ On You,’ New Mixtape, New Album

‘The biggest lesson I learned is patience,’ Atlanta MC says. By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B. Photo: MTV News Upstart Atlanta MC B.o.B aka Bobby Ray isn’t your average rapper by any means. First of all, he plays the guitar — and while Kanye West, Drake and Lil Wayne have tried their hands at shredding, none of them can spin a wayward, folksy tune like he can. Combine that with co-signs from Eminem and T.I., who signed the Mixtape Daily Firestarter alum to his Grand Hustle roster , and you have the makings of a breakout star. So how, exactly, does Bobby Ray plan on introducing his soulful Southern lyricism? With his new single, “Nothin’ On You,” a sprightly, musical number from his forthcoming debut, B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray . “Introducing B.o.B or Bobby Ray — it takes more than one song to do it,” the rapper told MTV News from red carpet of BET’s “Rip the Runway.” “But I feel like this song is really genuine and really sincere, so I feel good about people finding out about me through ‘Nothin’ On You’.” The song, featuring Bruno Mars, currently rests at number 37 on the Billboard Hip-Hop/R&B chart. Although “Nothin’ On You” is still picking up steam, it’s already received praise — the program director at Los Angeles’ KIIS FM told Entertainment Weekly that B.o.B would be the next big thing on radio. Bruno who, along with Phillip Lawrence from production team the Smeezingtons, helmed the track, gushed over Bobby Ray’s talent. “It’s great — he’s an incredible artist,” the singer said. “We actually wrote and sung on the hook. We’d been fans of his for a minute and he came in and just murdered those verses. Hopefully the rest is gonna be history.” The rapper has been signed to Atlantic Records for some time now and graced the pages of 2009’s XXL Freshman 10 issue, with fellow rookies Kid Cudi, Asher Roth and Wale, among others. Waiting on the bench wasn’t without its challenges. At one point B.o.B threatened to pull the plug on his promising career before it even started, though he later backtracked and said the rumors were exaggerated . “It does get frustrating, trying to be as free as possible but at the same time working with people,” the rapper told MTV News last year. But with a new mixtape — the DJ Drama-hosted May 25th — in the streets and a release date on deck for his debut, April 27, Bobby Ray said he learned the value of patience. “I will tell you this about the journey as an artist to get to the point where you actually have a release date,” he offered. “The biggest lesson I learned is patience. Once you get here it’s like, OK, now you have to keep going. You never get to an end. So you have to be patient and pace yourself. Take time. It’s like building a house. You gotta take time, build a foundation, get the walls right, get the electricity right, get ther plumbing right and make sure when you turn the light on that the door don’t open up.” Related Artists B.O.B. “Bobby Ray” B.o.B.

Kanye West Protege Mikkey Halstead Working On First Album

‘It’s really going to be done the way I want,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Steven Roberts Mikkey Halsted Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Mikkey Halsted You would think that if Kanye West produced your demo with beats he hand-selected for you, you would be good to go. Now if that demo somehow found its way into the hands of Cash Money Records CEO Birdman, you’d definitely be topping the charts in no time. As a teenager, Mikkey Halsted was lucky enough to experience both of those scenarios, although things ended up not working out as planned. Hailing from Chicago, Halsted was introduced to Kanye by his sister, Miss Criss, another artist West had been working with in 2001. Criss raved to the producer about her brother’s lyrical skills but it wasn’t until ‘Ye overheard Halsted freestyling that he began to really pay attention. “Just going over to Kanye’s mama’s house, I used to be just kicking it, freestyling,” Halsted explained. “I really wasn’t taking hip-hop seriously at that point. I was into trying to make it to the NBA — I was a ballplayer. We got over there freestyling one time and he was like, ‘Damn, man, you’re really raw for real. Your sister wasn’t lying.’ He was like, ‘Man, take these beats, man, and see what you can do.’ ” Halsted came back the next day with three records finished, and the duo worked on a 15-song demo that made it to the executive offices of Cash Money Records. “This is before Kanye went to the Roc and all that … got to Cash Money, they heard it. They went crazy. They actually tried to get Kanye and me to sign.” Mikkey and his sister both signed and actually went on tour with the label, and although things did not ultimately work out with Cash Money, he built great relationships — Lil Wayne is still one of his good friends. Weezy shouted out Halsted in the October 2008 issue of XXL saying, “If anybody had me really get on my sh–, [it was] Mikkey.” Halsted also learned from the Cash Money work ethic. “I learned the independent game from them and I saw how they grinded. I took the Cash Money grind and applied it to my own situation and with my work ethic. I saw Wayne [work], and me and Wayne kind of came up together in a way,” he said. “All of those things and all of those different people kind of made me who I am today.” After a short stint signed to Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def imprint, Halsted found himself independent again — and relishing it. He hooked back up with Kanye’s onetime mentor and Grammy-winning producer, No ID, and the two have steadily been putting out mixtapes and releasing songs to the hip-hop blogosphere. They are currently working on an independent album called The Darkroom. “It’s really going to be my first album and it’s really going to be done the way I want — the way No ID and I wanted to do it if we didn’t have any label interference,” Halsted said. “But it’s just a good thing. I’ve been through so many different things in a short period of time, so thank God I started as a teenager so, you know, you feel like you matured now, you ready for everything that’s coming.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . French Montana Says Debut Album Needs To Be A ‘Masterpiece’

‘I’m not no overnight rapper,’ Akon signee tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid French Montana Photo: Konvict Music The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive French Montana is in no rush to put out his debut album. One of Akon’s newest signees said he has enough money to continue serving up material through mixtapes, such as his latest, Mac Wit Da Cheese 2. His first album has to be classic, French said. “My album is set for late summer,” French said last week while shooting a video for his mixtape track “Bad Habits,” with guest Bun B . “It’s called Excuse My French. I’m just working. I wanna come with a masterpiece, man. I’m not no overnight rapper. I’m comfortable with where I’m at. My followers are my real followers. I ain’t no phase. I’m here to stay. [The release] could be late summer, it could come out past then, as long as it’s a masterpiece when we put it out. … You gotta understand, that’s what they gonna remember you for, your first album. Biggie’s Ready to Die, UGK’s first album — you wanna come with the same thing. The title gotta live up to the music.” Bun and French share a mutual respect for each other’s grinds, Montana said. “The video is called ‘Bad Habits,’ ” Montana explained. “Everybody got a bad habit. I sent [the track] to Bun. Bun heard it, laid the verse in like five minutes. I sent it to him, he called me back in five minutes. I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ ” “I was in the lab, I was already in that zone,” Bun added. “It was something that I felt made sense, that I felt represented his movement, repped my movement, and we spoke to people on a real level. That’s one thing about UGK music. We can’t be fabricating sh–. We kept it real with each other.” Streets Is Talking: News And Notes From The Underground French isn’t the only new guy Akon is looking to put out. The worldwide superstar just signed Southern California’s Ya Boy to his Kon Live company. “Ya Boy is one of the hardest workers today. … He’s an amazing artist that never got a chance to shine,” Akon said in a statement. “He never gave up, and now he has a chance to shine not only on the West Coast, but internationally.” Ya Boy’s new LP should be out later this year. Jay Electronica Praises Soulja Boy, Reveals Project With Nas

‘You can expect multiple projects this year,’ MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Jay Electronica The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive The reception Jay Electronica has been getting from fans during his U.K. tour has been just as enthusiastic as his feedback Stateside. Fans and critics still love “Exhibit C” and some of Jay’s other underground gems. People are clamoring for the street CD Act II and the official LP Act III, and Jay said he’s going to deliver both of those projects and more this year. “It’s still Act II. Act III, the official album, which ‘Exhibit A’ and ‘Exhibit C’ are a part of [as well as] ‘Dear Moleskin,’ ” Jay said in Europe earlier this week. “Me and Mos [Def] have a project that we’re doing, me and Guilty Simpson have a project that we’re doing. I would like to do a project with Lupe — [Fiasco] we’re going to do a project at some point. Me and Nas have a project that we’re doing . I’m just trying. I’m in the process of working and connecting. I don’t really feel like a song or an album is the end-all, be-all to what we’re doing. “You can expect my album this year,” he added. “You can expect multiple projects this year. We’re going to do a lot this year.” Electronica is focused on responsibilities outside of rap, including raising a baby daughter with singer Erykah Badu. “Dealing with a lot personally, that not necessarily takes me away from my music, because it comes through in my music as well. But as a person trying to grow and figure out how to handle things, learn and be a man — all that’s a part of the process too. It’s hard to put a release date on those type of things when you’re factoring those things in.” The New Orleans native said that “Exhibit A” producer Just Blaze will produce 65 percent of his solo debut. Jay’s commanding mic presence and wordplay have captured the ears of many, and he said he has no choice but to come with sustaining lyrics like “I make the devil hit his knees and say, ‘To our father’ ” — he’s a product of his golden-era-of-rap influences. “The lyricism in my music — I come from a different era,” he explained. “I was born in ’76. I was raised in the ’80s. I’m an ’80s baby. LL Cool J was the first person that inspired me to rhyme. I have a lot of bragging in my rhymes. LL was my first enlightenment. If you would have asked me this two years ago, I would have said lyricism was lacking. Like somebody would say Soulja Boy … you would say he’s not a lyricist, right? If you took a poll and said, ‘Is Soulja Boy a lyricist?’ People would say no, right? But it’s not the words, it’s energy of what he does that’s the lyrics. It’s not the lyrics — the energy of it is the connector. The energy of it is greater than the words of it. In a sense, lyrics has been lacking in the contest of grammar and vocabulary, but the spirit and energy of it is never gone — or else the complete genre of hip-hop is gone.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Drake Is ‘Great For Music,’ LeBron James And Magic Johnson Say

‘Drake is bringing a lot to the table,’ Johnson tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Drake and LeBron James Photo: canvascleveland.com Celebrity Favorites Drake coached a basketball team in his “Best I Ever Had” music video , and he recently had a chance to call plays with NBA legend Magic Johnson during the NBA All-Star Game festivities in Dallas. Drake and Magic’s team beat the squad coached by Alonzo Mourning and assistant coach Mario Lopez. Common, Chris Tucker and Pitbull were among the celebs who played with athletes such as Rick Fox, Chris Mullin and Terrell Owens. Magic, an NBA Hall of Famer, said working with Drake earned him cool points at home. “Drake is bringing a lot to the table, man, with a young audience,” Magic said in Dallas. “He’s from Toronto. I think he’s bringing it hard and heavy, you know? My daughter said I was cool because I was coaching with him instead of him coaching with me. All right, thank you!” Meanwhile, LeBron James is like all of us, waiting on Drizzy’s Thank Me Later debut . Put aside the fact that they both endorse Sprite or that Drake’s “Forever” was the highlight of James’ “More Than a Game” film soundtrack — #23 said the Toronto MC is just gifted. “Unbelievable recording artist,” LeBron said of Drake. “Unbelievable talent. I’m looking forward [to] his first LP. I think we all got So Far Gone and all the mixtapes he’s come out with. But he’s an unbelievable talent. Lloyd Banks Calls ‘We Are The World’ Remake ‘A Good Look’

‘They brought it to a new audience,’ the G-Unit rapper says of the Haiti benefit single. By Shaheem Reid Lloyd Banks Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Lloyd Banks said he wasn’t deeply touched by the original version of “We Are the World” when it came out in 1985; the Southside Queens native was just barely 2 years old when the star-studded charity record debuted. So, understandably, Banks said he has no problem with the record being remade . “To be honest with you, I’m very aware of the record and how big the record was,” he said Wednesday afternoon at the G-Unit office. “But I was so young at the time, it really doesn’t affect me the way it would affect an older rapper. They might have completely understood what the record was. It doesn’t disappoint me they had rap in it now. It’s kids out there that never heard the record to begin with. I can’t say they messed the record up. If anything, they brought it to a new audience. “Michael Jackson was a phenomenal artist. It will never be another one of those guys,” Banks added. “So anything would have not topped [the original version]. You could have anybody sing on that. But it was a good look. It was for a good cause.” Jay-Z, meanwhile, told MTV News that the original was “untouchable” and was surprised that it was remade. Banks found out about the tragic earthquake in Haiti when he was released from jail in Canada and came back home to the U.S. The G-Unit rapper was arrested for assault and robbery last month after an alleged dispute with a concert promoter. “Actually, when I had first came back from jail, I seen that,” he explained. “It was the first thing I saw in the airport. It really bothered me. People was sending me stuff through the phone; [pictures] of people lined up dead. It really bothered me. From that point on, I was like, ‘Whatever I could do [to help], I’ll be there. A concert or whatever.’ I have a lot of close friends that are Haitian, including Sha Money XL, Tony Yayo, Whoo Kid and some of my guys from the street. It’s like, ‘Damn, they got family members they still haven’t heard from to this day.’ I wouldn’t know what I would do in that situation. My heart goes out to all those people who lost somebody.” Related Videos Behind The Scenes Of ‘We Are The World’ Related Photos ‘We Are The World 25 For Haiti’ Recording Session

Jay-Z Says He’s Got A ‘Crazy Record’ For Next LP

Hov says he has no release date in mind for his next LP, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Jay-Z Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Apologies for being a little late with Mixtape Daily: We’re fresh off the plane from NBA All-Star Weekend. We couldn’t script the problems we had getting to Dallas (with all the flight cancellations), but we made it and D-Town was a movie. Big up to Play N Skillz for rolling out the red carpet and a special thanks to Ahyiana Deldridge and the entire NBA PR team for all the help and access (we were on the court with all the NBA All-Stars!). Normally, on Tuesdays Mixtape features “Don’t Sleep,” but we interrupt our regularly scheduled programming for a special message from Jigga. During the red carpet for his and LeBron James’ “Two Kings Dinner and Afterparty,” presented by Bing and Sprite, we got Jay-Z to tell us a little bit about his new LP. However, don’t expect it any time soon. Just like last year when we asked him about Blueprint 3, Hov said he doesn’t have a release date in mind. (Back in September, he told MTV News that his next album will be the “most experimental” he’s ever made.) “I don’t know,” he said on Saturday when asked about a release date for his next LP. “I didn’t really start yet. I got a couple of scraps and I got a couple of ideas. I didn’t really go into the studio yet. I’ve been toying with ideas and direction and things like that. “I got one crazy record,” he added. “To be honest with you, it’s crazy. I got one and we’ll build from there. Whether it comes out this year or next year, it depends on the music and how it’s coming out. I don’t really have any dates.” In the past few months, we’ve seen Jay perform at the World Series , open up the Super Bowl with a performance video, team up with Rihanna and members of U2 for the Haiti benefit song “Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour),” and during NBA All-Star weekend, he definitely had one of the biggest and anticipated parties. This weekend he starts another leg of his Blueprint 3 tour and this summer he headlines the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee. Seemingly Jay is everywhere, and it’s all serving as a muse for the music. “The world is inspiring me,” he said. “I get out and see the world and more of the world is accepting of our music and what we do. I’m just inspired by the whole thing and how big hip-hop can be and how much of a phenomenon it is. You couldn’t imagine hip-hop being at the World Series. I touched the championship trophy before A-Rod and the Vince Lombardi trophy before the Saints. You couldn’t imagine that happening 10 years ago. How about five years ago? I’m saying that to say that the journey hip-hop has taken and we are right now, there’s no imitation to it … still. Rick Ross Calls Out Sway, Squashes Beef With Floyd Mayweather

Miami Boss challenges our own correspondent to a bowling showdown, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: Nigel Degraff The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Rick Ross has a new single coming out called “Sweet Life,” but recently, the CEO of the Maybach Music Group was living the suite life in Las Vegas. The Boss celebrated his birthday at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, where the Kingpin suite cost him $25,000 a night. “It only makes sense to come out to Vegas,” Ross told Mixtape Daily. ” ‘Cause to me, Vegas is the city of dreams. It started out as the desert. Once the sun goes down, there’s a lot of stars in the streets. “You come right out of your bedroom to the bowling alley, baby,” a shirtless Ross said standing on the lanes in his suite, right before rolling a strike. When it comes to knocking down pins, Ross’ confidence is at an all-time high. “I get it down with my homies,” the Miami native said of his bowling skills. “Gunplay got a little something. I would love to issue a challenge to anybody that think they could go cold turkey on the Boss. I hear Sway got something, but I don’t think Sway want none. You feel me? This is the winner’s side.” Uh-oh, shots fired. Rick the Ruler wants to go up against MTV News’ very own Sway. Surely this is going to be a showdown for the ages. The Mixtape Daily family is about to Don King the event in a major way. Of course, we had to get a response from the big homie down the hall. “You don’t wanna see me on the lanes, man,” Sway said after watching the footage of Ross’ challenge, and the West Coast hip-hop veteran talks a lot of smack as well. “I know you been hanging out with Diddy a lot; talk to Diddy about me,” Sway retorted, sending his own message to the Carol City Kingpin. “I’m gonna say this, Rick Ross challenged me. I gladly accept his challenge. More importantly, than me just taking it to the lanes, I think we should put something on it. We should do it for a charity in Haiti. Or even the Haitian community in Florida, those who may have suffered from this catastrophic event that hit the island. More importantly man, I think after we get busy on these lanes, and I take care of my business, I feel like I should get mentioned in a metaphor on one of your radio singles. I wanna be called ‘Sway the Boss.’ That’s what we gambling for. That’s what the stakes are. The stakes are high. I’m taking the challenge.” You can expect a lot of trash talking between the two as we figure out when to have this face-off. It’s all in love and fun on both sides. That hasn’t always been the case when it comes to Ross and boxing champ (and friend of 50 Cent) Floyd “Money” Mayweather . Ross has dissed the pugilist in a couple of tracks, most recently on the Triple C’s song “Go,” and the two even had a brief run-in on New Years Eve in Vegas. But it’s all water under the bridge now, and Ross says the friction is dead. He ran into Mayweather again in Vegas, and things were peaceful. “Yeah, bumped into Floyd Mayweather,” Ross said. “Most definitely. We chopped it up like G’s and after a discussion, we shook hands. So that’s squashed. It’s a new year, it’s time to get new money. Y’all know what it is. I kept it 1,000.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
