Another mass shooting has taken place in America. On Thursday afternoon, a gunman broke into the offices of The Capital Gazette in Maryland, opening fire and killing at least five individuals and wounding many others. According to law enforcement officials, an unnamed suspect is in custody, but very little is known about him at the moment. (UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as 38-year old Jarrod Ramos. He once filed a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper that was thrown out.) We can confirm, however, that the suspect was found hiding under a desk inside the building and that a package (or carrying device of some kind), which contained a flammable liquid, was discovered near him on the ground. Police have also said the suspect was an adult male and that he used a “long gun” to carry out his massacre. More than 170 people were in the building during the shooting; those who did not suffer any injuries were evacuated and taken to a reunification area. Among those unharmed was reporter Phil Davis, who has made headlines for Tweeting a few details from the awful incident. “There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload,” Davis Tweeted at one point on Thursday, adding: “Gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees. Can’t say much more and don’t want to declare anyone dead, but it’s bad. “A single shooter shot multiple people at my office, some of whom are dead.” In a later interview posted on the newspaper’s website, Davis said the scene inside the newspaper’s office “was like a war zone,” expounding: “I’m a police reporter. “I write about this stuff – not necessarily to this extent, but shootings and death – all the time. But as much as I’m going to try to articulate how traumatizing it is to be hiding under your desk, you don’t know until you’re there and you feel helpless.” Elsewhere, Jimmy DeButts, an editor at the Capital Gazette, Tweeted that he was “devastated & heartbroken,” explaining why it is he and his co-workers do the jobs they do: We keep doing more with less. We find ways to cover high school sports, breaking news, tax hikes, school budgets & local entertainment.. We are there in times of tragedy. “We do our best to share the stories of people, those who make our community better. Please understand, we do all this to serve our community.” Along these lines, the newspaper has said it has no plans of going on hiatus or taking any sort of break. “I can tell you this: We are putting out a damn paper tomorrow,” reporter Chase Cook Tweeted. President Donald Trump, has has often referred to the press as the “enemy of the people,” something he reiterated two days ago at a rally in South Carolina, chimed in as follows on social media: “Prior to departing Wisconsin, I was briefed on the shooting at Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. “My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Thank you to all of the First Responders who are currently on the scene.” Added the First Lady on Twitter: “Today’s violence at the Capital Gazette was tragic & evil. “My heart goes out to all affected in this brutal & senseless attack, & I send thoughts & prayers for comfort to the friends, family & colleagues of those killed & injured.” Anne Arundel County Police spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure said that officers were on the scene “very, very quickly, I think it was around 60 seconds or a minute-and-a-half” after receiving the call about the active shooter. As of this writing, the suspect is said to not be cooperating with police. Petty Officer 3rd Class Shantanay Clark is a cryptologic technician (collection)aboard the guided-missile destroyer operating out of San Diego. A Navy cryptologic technician (collection) is responsible for gathering and analyzing signals and transmissions coming from other ships. Clark credits success in the Navy to many of the lessons learned growing up in Atlanta. “I learned how to work with people and keep an open mind,” said Clark. “It’s important to be open to different ideas and trying new things.” More than 300 sailors serve aboard the ship, and their jobs are highly specialized, requiring dedication and skill, according to Navy officials. The jobs range from maintaining engines to handling weaponry along with a multitude of other assignment that keep the ship mission-ready at all times. “The success of the Decatur is due to the dedication and ownership each member of the crew feels towards making Decatur the best ship on the waterfront,” said Cmdr. Bob Bowen, commanding officer of USS Decatur. “Our team is always ready to accomplish the mission because of the commitment each sailor has to maintaining high standards and sound shipboard operating principles. Every team member knows their roles and responsibilities and does their part to ensure success.” Destroyers are warships that provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities. They are 510 feet long and armed with tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles, Standard Missile-3 and newer variants of the SM missile family, advanced gun systems and close-in gun systems. Destroyers are deployed globally and can operate independently or as part of carrier strike groups, surface action groups, or amphibious readiness groups. Their presence helps the Navy control the sea. Sea control is the precondition for everything else the Navy does. It cannot project power, secure the commons, deter aggression, or assure allies without the ability to control the seas when and where desired. The ship has anti-aircraft capability armed with long range missiles intended for air defense to counter the threat to friendly forces posed by manned aircraft, anti-ship, cruise and tactical ballistic missiles. Unique experiences build strong fellowship among the crew. The crew is motivated, and can quickly adapt to changing conditions, according to Navy officials. It is a busy life of specialized work, watches and drills. Serving aboard a guided missile destroyer instills accountability and toughness and fosters initiative and integrity. While serving in the Navy may present many challenges, Clark has found many great rewards. Clark is also proud of earning an accelerated advancement for being the top of the A school class. As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied-upon assets, Clark and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs. “Serving in the Navy has helped me step out of my comfort zone and pushed me to strive for goals I otherwise wouldn’t have,” added Clark.

We already know who won big at the MTV Movie & TV Awards . But there was more going on than awards, folks. Tiffany Haddish was the hilarious host, and she had some great lines as she roasted everyone from the Kardashians to the Stranger Things kids. It's funny. You might not trust her around food after this, though. Take a look. Tiffany Haddish is quite a character. Some of her claims and analogies are a little weird, but they always get a laugh. She starts off by talking about some racial milestones. “This has been a year of firsts for black people,” Haddish says. “I'm the first black woman to host the MTV Movie and TV Awards.” That particular milestone is long overdue. ” Black Panther ,” she mentions. “Is the first African American movie to make a billion dollars.” That was an excellent movie. One of Marvel's best, in fact. “And The Quiet Place ,” Haddish continues. “Is the first film to scare black people out of talking in movie theaters.” She is making a joke, there, about a stereotype that portrays African Americans as vocally engaging with films as they are happening. “I'm always excited to see the Kardashians.” “Hiiii,” Haddish says, waving at Kim Kardashian, who is wearing problematic braids , and Kris Jenner, whose commanding presence is always welcome. “That family,” Haddish continues. “Is basically the Star Wars franchise.” That's true in lots of senses. They're successful, they're an institution in the entertainment industry, and they can also be very controversial. Also not everyone likes them. “They make a ton of money, a new one is always popping up, and they’re ruled by a bossy overlord who sleeps in a mask and she loves black men.” Those first two are very true. The third, though? First of all, Emperor Sheev Palpatine would be the “bossy overlord.” I have personally made plenty of comparisons between Kris Jenner and Palpatine — all favorable, of course. Sleeping in a mask sounds like a reference to Darth Vader (or maybe to Kylo Ren, though he hopefully doesn't sleep in that ridiculous thing). He is famously attractive and the entire audience immediately steels themselves for whatever sex joke she will inevitably make. “Nick Jonas is going to tear it up with Mustard,” Haddish says, referring to the musician beside Nick. “Which is also how I want him to tear it up with me.” While we appreciate her enthusiasm for Nick, we wouldn't recommend involving mustard in sex.
