The plus-size model, author, body-positive activist, and Muslim feminist didn’t see a clear path to the spotlight for a person who looked like her. “I was never represented so I thought it was impossible to be a model,” she told Hello Beautiful in an exclusive interview. “They would be thin and white with the long straight hair like you know really skinny very high fashion, and there wasn’t anybody who looked like me doing it.” The media taught her that “my body doesn’t fit the standards,” but that did little to restrain her “obsession” with the fashion industry. She wanted in and if being on the catwalk wasn’t an option, she would look to the other careers displayed during the hours and hours of television programming she was consuming on the now defunct Style Network . She kept up to date “by looking at fashions in Europe or fashion in New York.” She said “I was heavy into Gwen Stefani at the time and the whole punk culture. I took inspirations from a little bit of everywhere.” She felt boxed out professionally, but social media and the rise of blogging introduced her to a way she could strike a pose for fun. Writing was cathartic and shooting was a way to express her creativity. “I did two photos shoots just for fun because I wanted to be a blogger, and I discovered the hashtag #plussizemodel. I was like there’s real plus size models out in these streets? As she became more transparent and connected to her body and spirit, they became more interested. As of publication Vernon has amassed more than 40,000 Instagram followers by simply being herself. “So, after that I kind of just like fell in love with what modeling meant or what it actually means which is showcasing beauty . I just started modeling and posting on Instagram and talking about cool shit and people started fucking with me.” She explained that her friend’s deception actually led to her first gig. “My friend actually ended up tricking me into modeling the third time she was like ‘Can you come to the store and style my models?’ I was like ‘Fo sho!’ So, I get there, and I bring all my shit and I said, ‘Where are the models?’ She’s like ‘You ARE the model.” Afterwards, she applied her stylish instincts to dressing in a way that aligned with her faith on and off the set. She maintains that she is “just as Muslim without” her hijab but after exploring what it meant to her, she decided to observe the tradition. “It took a long time for me to figure out what the hijab meant to me and it’s definitely a choice. I’ve come to terms with it. The hijab reflects who I am whether I wear it or not I’m still Muslim and its definitely not oppressive to me. Now, Cory is hitting back at his detractors and explaining that he did everything that he could. Cory Wharton fired off a tweet after receiving unfair backlash. “Everybody is so quick to try paint me as a bad dad,” Cory laments. “It’s not fair at all.” “Ryder got sick while I was on vacation,” he writes. “And once it got worst I booked a flight home.” “At this point,” he admits. “I can’t care about everyone one else thinks I know what type of dad I am.” “I just want Ryder to get better,” he expresses. Precious baby Ryder was born with a congenital condition known as VLCAD. Because of this condition, Ryder’s body has difficulty breaking down certain types of fats. That may sound simple, akin to lactose intolerance, but it can be serious, and can manifest in various ways throughout someone’s life. In fact, one of the childhood symptoms of VLCAD is heart problems. Last week, Ryder was hospitalized due to complications from her condition. Cory could not have known this when he booked his vacation. Us Weekly spoke to Cory, who released a statement to elaborate upon the frustrations that he expressed in his tweet. “While I rarely respond to public criticism,” Cory begins. “I felt the need this time to speak up.” For the record, he responded to public criticism just last week when he unveiled his new girlfriend . He asked fans to let him live his life. This is the kind of easily preventable dumb stuff that should never have gotten as far as it did. Burberry is publicly apologizing after one of its recent pieces of clothing caused a stir — and outrage — over the weekend. At London Fashion Week, they strutted a model out onto the runway with a noose dangling from their neck. Oh no . Content warning : this post continues numerous noose images for reference. Burberry was first called out by one of their own models, Liz Kennedy, who wrote on Instagram: “Suicide is not fashion,” Liz writes. “It is not glamorous nor edgy and since this show is dedicated to the youth expressing their voice, here I go.” “Riccardo Tisci and everyone at Burberry,” she says. “it is beyond me how you could let a look resembling a noose hanging from a neck out on the runway.” “How could anyone overlook this and think it would be okay to do this?” she asks. Liz adds: “Especially in a line dedicated to young girls and youth.” “The impressionable youth,” Liz emphasizes. “Not to mention the rising suicide rates world wide.” “Let’s not forget about the horrifying history of lynching either,” she adds. “There are hundreds of ways to tie a rope,” she notes. “And they chose to tie it like a noose completely ignoring the fact that it was hanging around a neck.” “A massive brand like Burberry who is typically considered commercial and classy should not have overlooked such an obvious resemblance,” she writes. Liz notes that she herself struggled with suicidal ideation as a teen. This was personal for her as it is for so many others. Marco Gobbetti issued a public apology. “We are deeply sorry for the distress caused by one of the products that featured in our [Autumn/Winter] 2019 runway collection Tempest,” Gobbetti writes. Notably, all images of that particular garment have been purged from the website. Tisci wrote: “I am so deeply sorry for the distress that has been caused as a result of one of the pieces in my show on Sunday.” “While the design was inspired by a nautical theme, I realize that it was insensitive,” Tisci acknowledges. “It was never my intention to upset anyone,” Tisci concludes. “I will make sure that this does not happen again.” Those experiencing suicidal depression could be hit with overpowering suicidal urges from exposure to certain images. One can think of these triggers like allergies . Harmless to most of us, but deadly to some. But, as Liz acknowledges, the noose is perhaps first and foremost evocative of lynching. Thousands of black Americans died by lynching in the United States. As you can see from the couple of sample headlines we have icnluded, the noose has become a symbol of intimidation and hate. Lynchings are a horrifying part of America's past — and the imagery persists because racism persists. The noose has been used to intimidate black people at work, on school campuses, and at their homes. We have all seen footage in which effigies of President Obama lynched were waved about during protests. No one genuinely believes that Burberry was trying to subtly intimidate or harass black audience members with their clothing line. But this kind of mistake should not still be happening in 2019. We cannot afford to be thoughtless. Short of a swastika, just about the worst symbol to wear around your neck is a noose.
