Conditions at the jail are so bad, the local sheriff now refuses to send arrestees there. https://t.co/vYvhKfdaEn — The Appeal (@theappeal) April 16, 2019 Family Of Jamycheal Mitchell Reaches $3 Million Settlement, Hampton Roads Regional Jail Being Investigated The family of a Virginia man who died in jail has been granted a settlement. Jamycheal Mitchell passed away at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail in Portsmouth, Virginia, on August 19, 2015. He was behind bars for months after he was arrested on charges of trespass and petit larceny for allegedly stealing a 2-liter bottle of Mountain Dew, a king size Snickers bar and a Zebra Cake which accumulated to about $5 worth of snacks from a 7-Eleven. The Appeal recently released an extensive story about Jamycheal’s alleged abuse in the jail. The website notes that Jaymycheal was ordered to receive mental health treatment after he was declared unfit to stand trial. The Virginia man had a history of severe mental disability including a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder. The treatment did not happen however and he was incarcerated at the Portsmouth correctional facility up until his death. He was allegedly treated poorly all the way up to his demise. “While incarcerated at the jail, correctional officers allegedly struck Mitchell on the knuckles with a flashlight, hurled profanities, mocked him, and called him “dirty,” all as punishment for being uncooperative. When Mitchell was found dead in his cell in August 2015, he was covered in urine. Portsmouth’s chief medical examiner said the cause of death was a “probable cardiac arrhythmia accompanying wasting syndrome of unknown etiology.” His family settled lawsuits against the jail and NaphCare, the company that provided medical services for the jail, for approximately $3 million. Now Hampton Roads Regional jail is continuing to be investigated and the DOJ threatened to sue them if they did not improve conditions in particular for those with mental health issues. The DOJ also criticized the incarceration of 62 people with severe mental illness at Hampton Roads who had booking histories of “minor offenses,” such as shoplifting, trespassing, and violating their probation. Unfortunately, the DOJ’s yet to take action, a delay that could possibly be in part because of the government shutdown. The Appeal reports; “In its December 2018 report, the DOJ gave the jail just over a month and a half to implement its recommendations. The agency also said it would sue if the jail did not “satisfactorily” improve its conditions during that time period. But when the deadline passed in February, the federal government had just emerged from the longest shutdown in history. As of early this month, the DOJ had not followed through on its threat to sue Hampton Roads. (The agency did not respond to The Appeal’s request for comment.) The jail continues to work with the DOJ on its recommendations, Hackworth said. He told The Appeal that he is awaiting more clarity from the agency on its more than 40 recommended remediations, such as auditing of administrative records regularly for completeness and accuracy, ensuring there are improved intake screenings and health assessments, and ending restrictive housing for people who say they are suicidal.” Now The Virginian Pilot reports that an unfortunate fight has broken out between Jamychael’s family members for the settlement money. Jamycheal’s mother’s side of the family is reportedly fighting with his father’s side. “The mother’s side argues they were closer to Jamycheal and deserve most, if not all, of the money. The mother believes she should receive the “majority,” with the half sister receiving a “reasonable” portion. The maternal half-sister wants an equal split between the two. The father’s side said they were all equally close to him. Therefore, they believe they should all receive equal portions: about $215,000 a person. We pray that Jamycheal’s family finds some middle ground and that the DOJ continues to look into a facility where 68 in-custody deaths took place between 2003 and 2018.

Monday afternoon in Atlanta, Shannon Sharpe, Rickey Smiley, and Laz Alonso linked up with the good folks at Home Depot for the $500,000 giveaway finale of the company’s Retool Your School campaign. In order to receive the money, each college had to come up with a campaign to tally the most votes from consumers and one school secured the bag with the first ever “Campaign of the Year Award”. BOSSIP got a chance to speak to Super Bowl Champion and NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe at the event and got some insight on how he got involved and what his HBCU, Savannah State University, means to him: BOSSIP : How did you first get involved with Home Depot Retool Your School? Shannon Sharpe : Anytime it’s something to help historically Black college, I want to be involved. I went to an HBCU understand the economic hardships that a lot of these institutions face and Home Depot is doing a really good thing today. The Shannon Sharpe you see here was cultivated at Savannah from 1986-1989 I had some great professors and doctors who cared about me and help me find out about myself. This is my chance to pay Savannah State back and those professors who took time to instill wisdom and knowledge in me. I wish we could have a $20 million endowment like Harvard but this is a really good opportunity for myself, Rickey (Smiley) who went to Alabama State, to give back. I don’t think a lot of people realize that I went to an HBCU. Most times they assume if you went to the NFL or played professional sports that you went to Notre Dame or Michigan or Nebraska or something like that. BOSSIP : What advice would you give high school athletes who want to play professionally but are afraid that they won’t get the exposure at an HBCU that they would at a PWI? SS : When I went to Savannah State my college coach, Bill Davis, God rest his soul, told me “Son, if you’re good, they’ll find you.” Because I was gonna transfer to the University of Miami, but I believed I was that good. I believed the NFL would find me. I believed that once I got to the NFL I would show that my skill set was as good or better than all those guys. It appears as if a three-month stint behind bars truly may have rehabilitated Ryan Edwards. We can’t say for certain, of course. We may need to wait and see if he joins Tinder any time soon and hits some woman on there up for some cocaine . For now, thoughm it’s pretty clear that Edwards is at least somewhat of a changed man. Why do we say this? Because the former Teen Mom star did something radical (for him) over the weekend: He spent time with his loved ones! Edwards celebrated Easter on Sunday alongside wife Mackenzie Standifer and their blended family, as the latter shared the above photo on her Instagram account. As you can see, it features Mackenzie holding the couple’s six-month-old son, Jagger, in her arms, while Ryan stands tall next to her with his son 10-year old son, Bentley, whom he shares with ex Maci Bookout. Also depicted in this snapshot? Standifer’s four-year-old son, Hudson, from a previous marriage. Mackenzie simply captioned the Instagram image with an emoji of a chick hatching from an egg. The last time we saw Ryan and Mackenzie together in a photo was in mid-January, just before Edwards was hauled off to prison for about 90 days following an arrest for theft and heroin possession . It was his third drug-related arrest in about two years. As a result of his breaking of the law last summer, Edwards was actually in rehab when little Jagger was born in October. Upon his recent release from the clink, multiple outlets reported that he wanted some time to himself and basically told Standifer to leave him alone — despite her having been parenting alone for many months beforehand. You’d think this wouldn’t have sat well with Mackenzie… and maybe it didn’t. But she isn’t thinking about divorce from Edwards, either, and there she was on Easter, including him in the family festivities. “Do you burn your house down when it’s dirty? No. Do you set your car on fire when it needs a new part? No,” Mackenzie previously wrote in response to a fan who asked about why she remains committed to her marriage. She went on to explain the concept of vows and being there in sickness and in health for one’s soulmate. “Just because someone has a problem doesn’t give you an excuse to give up … God has blessed me with the most caring husband and kids. It’s hard to be vulnerable and it means so much to have them in my corner,” she added. And she concluded this message as follows: “Don’t give up on love. It’s real. It breaks walls that have been built out of stone. Thankful for a man who accepts me for who I am and what I have been through and supports me even when I feel broken. “As much as I have been there for him, he’s been there for me 10x over.” That’s a very nice sentiment for sure. For our money, the first two episodes of Game of Thrones Season 8 are among the strongest the show has ever delivered. Characters being united for the first time in years, other major figures from disparate storylines crossing paths for the very first time, stirring tales of breastfeeding from giants … these past two installments had everything! Except, of course, for epic battle scenes — a fact that's very much to the chagrin of some viewers. But grab your dragonglass and fortify your courage with a big sip from Tormund's drinking horn, because it's about to go down in a major way! Yes, following seven-plus seasons of intense build-up, the Night King is about to arrive at Winterfell. It's about to begin — the war that fans have been waiting for since those poor Night's Watch randos encountered a pack of White Walkers in the very scene of the GoT pilot. And it's a safe bet that lots of people are about to die. As for predictions — well, GoT traffics in surprises, and we know better than to presume we have any idea what's in store. That being said, Brienne and Arya are both fan favorites who enjoyed life-changing milestone moments Sunday night, and you know how this show likes to rip away any shred of happiness (both ours and the characters). Oh, and not only did Bran just tell someone his life story — always a good sign that a character is next on the chopping block — the Night King is his number one nemesis, and it's easy to imagine him sacrificing himself for to save mankind. Anyway, the one thing we know for sure is that this episode is certain to satisfy those who complained about the lack of sword-swinging in the previous installments. In fact, it's looking like this one will be a wall-to-wall action episode, a la “The Watchers on the Wall” and “The Battle of the Bastards.” Budget-wise, we've come a long way since Tyrion missed the entirety of Season 1's Battle of the Whispering Wood after suffering a conveniently-timed bump on the head. Of course, it's looking like the action will take place entirely at Winterfell at night, so turn up the brightness on your screen before watching this preview. As for the actual episode, you may encounter a different sort of visual obstacle. It might be tough to see through the tears you'll be crying when characters you've been cheering on for the better part of a decade are mercilessly cut down by the undead.
