Inessential Essentials: Danny Boyle’s Shallow Grave Gets the Criterion Treatment

The film: Shallow Grave (1994) Why It’s an Inessential Essential: Today, Danny Boyle is commonly known as “the director of Slumdog Millionaire .” (Or: Olympian designer !) After that, he’s usually “the director of Trainspotting ,” or 127 Hours or even Millions . So it’s nice to see that the Criterion Collection’s first DVD/Blu-Ray release of a Boyle film is Shallow Grave , an early film by Boyle but an especially worthy one. Scripted by regular collaborator John Hodge ( Trainspotting , A Life Less Ordinary ), Shallow Grave is a nasty little neo-noir about three apathetic yuppies that cover up a crime involving a dead body and a bag full of cash. Juliet (Kerry Fox), Alex ( Ewan McGregor in his second film role), and David ( Doctor Who ‘s Christopher Eccleston) are a trio of casually petty young things that are equally bored, cruel and self-absorbed. They tentatively sublet the fourth bedroom in their Edinburgh flat to a stranger, who promptly dies and leaves a suitcase full of money beside his corpse. A decision is hastily made: they’ll keep the money and dispose of the body. The consequences of that decision naturally haunt and subsequently push the film’s group of sociopathic friends over the edge. How the DVD/Blu Ray Makes the Case for the Film: During his audio commentary soundtrack, Boyle behaves exactly how you’d think he would based on his films. He’s a reactive filmmaker, one that prioritizes sensationalism over moralism. That totally suits a film like Shallow Grave , a movie that Boyle, according to film critic Philip Kemp’s liner notes, originally conceived of as being similar to Blood Simple . During the director’s commentary (there’s also a separate commentary track that features Hodge in conversation with producer Andrew Macdonald), Boyle professes to have great reverence for British social realists like Ken Loach and Mike Leigh. But he also talks about how the film’s bright, lurid color palette, which he characterizes as “swathes of color,” were his way of getting away from “British realism,” which he said had “become very standard” at the time. Shallow Grave is about the perils of being young, British, materialistic and without a moral compass. But like Trainspotting , Boyle’s follow-up feature and breakthrough film, Shallow Grave , is a young filmmaker’s way of trying to, “just smash it up a bit, if we could.” Left to his own devices, Boyle tellingly only mentions the film’s political subtext infrequently and mostly in passing. He’s much more interested in talking about trick shots, effect-driven photography and the sense of visual “perspective” he achieved by making his antiheroes’ apartment, the film’s central location, built with an elevated foundation. Boyle did this for the same reason he had his cast lug around a crash test dummy when they simulated carrying a body down a flight of stairs. Boyle knew even then that to properly push buttons, he had to achieve a hyper-real effect. And he did: Boyle jokes that the dummy made his three lead actors mad at him, but that that an air of tension on-set is, “always a good thing.” Other trivia: Boyle is a great talker and goes on a number of funny tangents during his audio commentary, like when he warns anyone unfamiliar with The Wicker Man , which is playing in the background in one scene in Shallow Grave , not to watch the remake. His anecdote about gauging the success of Shallow Grave on the attendance of a single matinee screening in Hamilton, Scotland is especially funny. Boyle says that his contacts at Polygram Filmed Entertainment, the film’s distribution company, informed him that four people showed up to Hamilton’s first screening, but that that was a very good sign. “If there’s one person there,” Boyle recalled, “it’s going to be ok. If there’s nobody there, they don’t know. It’s bizarre, it’s all statistics, of course.” Previously: Inessential Essentials: Revisiting Joe Eszterhas’s Telling Lies in America Simon Abrams is a NY-based freelance film critic whose work has been featured in outlets like The Village Voice , Time Out New York , Vulture and Esquire . Oliver Stone Lights Up for Some Good Ole High Times

HIGH Times has been a purveyor of – well – high times for years now and it’s high time, apparently, that one high-profile fan of the illegal-ish botanic blazon its cover with his famous image. Oliver Stone will grace the cover of the magazine in the August 2012 issue, just in time for the magazine’s new editor-in-chief to settle in at his new post – quite a coup! Always the classy guy, stone takes a toke dressed in his red carpet best tux and shares with HIGH Tmes about his new film Savages while also taking a dig at American foreign intervention and the ongoing global drug war. And the three-time Oscar winner is quite frank about his penchant for marijuana and tends to go for local product. “Certainly if you appreciate California weed, which I have for many years, you’ll realize that we’re somewhat close to the money when we say that, California has surpassed Thailand, Jamaica, South Sudan, and certainly Mexico as the king and queen of quality weed,” said Stone. He also joked – or maybe not? – that he might get into agriculture himself. ” I’m thinking myself of getting into the business, although I suspect there’d be a lot of stress with the Feds changing the rules all the time. Those bastards.” Savages was a chance for Stone to re-connect to his inner rebel, he told HIGH Times . Said the publication’s Chris Simunek: “We applaud Oliver Stone for showing the same sort of courage in his support for the marijuana cause that he’s shown with so many other issues, past and present. HIGH Times has always championed the rebel with a cause, and when people of Mr. Stone’s renown speak up — and smoke up — in the public sector, it exposes one more chink in the armor of idiocy that protects the status quo.” [Source: HIGH Times ] And what do you think of Stone’s HIGH Times cover shot?

Waka Flocka Flame Says Rick Ross Stole His Sound

‘He watering it down, just putting words together that sounded good,’ Waka tells Complex magazine. By Rob Markman Waka Flocka Flame Photo: Getty Images Waka Flocka Flame doesn’t dabble in rap politics. The outspoken Atlanta rap star hasn’t yet mastered the art of being diplomatic and he most likely never will. In his most recent interview with Complex magazine, Waka weighed in on Jay-Z, Kanye West, Rick Ross and other rappers he feels have capitalized off of his rowdy, down-bottom sound. “What are y’all gonna say now? Jay-Z stupid as hell? My sound is wack? You gonna say that? They love the sound. They can’t run away from it. That shit re-sparked n—as’ careers. My sound put life into a lot of people’s careers. I feel like my sound changed hip-hop. Period,” Waka told the magazine. “It’s crazy when I came out with it, everybody laughed at it, but the next year everybody’s doing it. They getting credit for the sh– you started. You be like, ‘Damn, how is this n—a a genius for doing something I started?’ ” Flocka first emerged in 2009 with “O Let’s Do It,” a riot-starting jam fueled by a mix of sporadic horn stabs and thumping bass. His next single, the Lex Luger -produced “Hard in the Paint,” would introduce rap fans to a refreshing-yet-schizophrenic sound. By 2010, the horrific synth lines and kinetic drum patterns became rap’s hottest sound and Luger one of the most in-demand producers. Kanye tapped Waka’s sound scientist on the Throne’s “H.A.M.” single. Rick Ross, who first collaborated with Waka on his “O Let’s Do It” remix, went on to make a number of hits with Lex, most notably “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast).” In just two years, Luger has crafted tracks with Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, 2 Chainz, Wale, Mac Miller and Ace Hood. Waka, who will release his new album Triple F Life on Tuesday, doesn’t mention Ross by name, but suggests that the Maybach Music boss swiped his signature sound. “This n—a out here making 30 fucking songs with your sound,” Flocka charged. “He watering it down, just putting words together that sounded good. Sh– would be harder if it was the truth.” Thirty songs may be a stretch, but still Waka is not flattered by what he sees as imitation. “That sh– made me tight. N—as built labels off our sound — like, literally. You know how many n—as sound like Lex Luger and Southside?” he asked rhetorically, referencing his second in-house producer Southside. “I go in n—as’ studios, all their beats sound like my producers. I be like, What the f—?” Do you believe Rick Ross swiped Waka Flocka Flame’s sound? Share your opinion in the comments! Related Artists Waka Flocka Flame Rick Ross

"Project Misty" is a Resounding Suck-cess

Here’s some feel-good news for you on this sunny Friday afternoon: a few days ago we told you about the campaign to bring Radley Meztger ‘s erotic classic The Opening of Misty Beethoven to Blu-ray here on the Mr. Skin blog. It initially met with great success on Kickstarter, but was derailed when the popular crowd-sourcing site suddenly suspended the campaign, claiming that Misty violated their “community standards.” Not to be deterred, DistribPix head Steven Morowitz moved Misty to an independent site, ProjectMisty.com , and announced to Kickstarter backers that the campaign would continue there. And now, a mere two days after Project Misty was launched, Morowitz has announced that they have reached their goal of $10,000 and Misty Beethoven on Blu-ray will be a reality after all. Project Misty still has another 14 days to go, so if you want to get in on the ground floor (and pre-order the Blu-ray , the poster , or even some sweet “Henry Paris” martini glasses while you’re at it), it’s not too late. Go to ProjectMisty.com now and pledge your support- all additional pledges will go towards improving the Blu-ray product (subtitle coding, additional restoration, upgraded menus, etc). And congratulations to Steven and the crew at DistribPix! Long live Misty Beethoven ! Celebrate Project Misty ‘s success with nude pics of star Constance Money right here at MrSkin.com!

Lauryn Hill Faces Federal Tax Charges

Former Fugees singer could face up to three years in prison if found guilty for failing to file income-tax returns. By Rob Markman Lauryn Hill Photo: David Wolff-Patrick/ Redferns/ Getty Images Fourteen years after she released her classic album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the IRS is teaching the former Fugees singer a lesson on the importance of filing her taxes. Lauryn Hill was charged Thursday (June 7) with failing to file three years of income-tax returns, and now the government is looking to settle the score. A press release issued to MTV News states that Hill, who owns four different corporations, makes most of her money from music and film royalties. In the three years in which Hill failed to file, the IRS estimates that she’s earned more than $1.6 million in income. If found guilty, she could face up to three years in prison and a $300,000 fine. The news comes just days after Hill performed in her native New Jersey at Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam concert, surprising concertgoers with a short but impactful performance. She was a special guest during Nas’ set and performed the Fugees’ “Ready or Not,” her own “Lost Ones” and “If I Ruled the World” with the Queensbridge rap legend. Hill was originally scheduled to come out as a guest during Nicki MInaj’s set, but after a Hot 97 DJ insulted the Young Money queen, Lil Wayne insisted that none of his artists perform at the concert. While Hill admitted that she was unaware of the specifics, she issued a statement in support of Minaj . “I don’t have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists, but I do support artists standing by their beliefs and walking with integrity,” she wrote. “We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music while giving artists their proper respect. This cannot be done while taking their contributions for granted or trying to control the scope of their growth and power through threats and fear tactics.” Hill is scheduled to appear in court on June 29. Jamie Lynn Spears Water Balloon Party

The last time we saw Jamie Lynn Spears , she was showing off her sexy bikini body in some Instagram or Twitter pictures or one of those things, so I was looking forward to some more. And then I got these. The idea of Britney Spears’ younger sister wearing a white t-shirt and playing with water balloons sounds pretty damn awesome on paper, but I’m not getting the money shot. Sure we get a little cleavage, but I was expecting a whole lot more. Next time.

Kanye West, Fat Joe Channel Native Tongues On ‘Pride N Joy’

Fat Joe tells MTV News his latest single is ‘what hip-hop is supposed to be.’ By Rob Markman Fat Joe Photo: MTV News During the early 1990s, the Native Tongues was one of rap’s most influential collectives. Comprised of groups A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and Jungle Brothers, the crew collaborated on beloved hip-hop tracks like De La’s “Buddy” and “A Roller Skating Jam Named ‘Saturdays’.” It’s unifying tracks like those that inspired Fat Joe ‘s latest single “Pride N Joy.” “That’s exactly what it was,” Fat Joe said of the song’s Native Tongues comparisons. “It was like Native Tongues, it was like crazy, everybody was in there, and that’s what hip-hop is supposed to be.” The track was produced by Kanye West and brought Miguel, Roscoe Dash, Jadakiss, Mos Def, Busta Rhymes and DJ Khaled all together in the studio. It was Yeezy who put the plan in motion. ” ‘Ye hit me up and said, ‘Yo Joe, it’s time.’ He don’t even get on the phone, so when he said it was time, I flew into New York,” Joe explained while backstage at Hot 97’s Summer Jam concert on Sunday. “We were up in there working in the lab for like three, four days.” Originally the track featured a bridge sung by R&B stars Trey Songz and Miguel, but West felt the song was better served with a harder rap vibe. “He was like, ‘Yo we gotta turn it into hip-hop, we gotta chant the hook. He called a bunch of people, I called a bunch of people, they came down,” Crack said. “And even if she all about the money, I don’t really care,” the MCs chant in unison while clapping their hands. “We was all in there together and it was an ill vibe,” the Terror Squad leader said describing the scene in the studio. “We brought the microphone outside the studio and no Styrofoam [sound proofing] and everybody together just going in.” Though he is already two singles deep (“Pride N Joy” and the Chris Brown-assisted “Another Round”), Joe isn’t going to rush his eleventh album. There is currently no release date. “I’m taking it back to the ’80s, when artists where putting out like four singles in a row,” he said. “That way you smash ’em and the fans officially know, ‘Yo, this dude got nothin’ but hits on this thing, I’ma go cop the album.’ ” What do you think of “Pride N Joy”? Is it “what hip-hop is supposed to be”? Leave your comment below! Related Artists Kanye West Fat Joe

Nicki Minaj Offers No ‘Apology’ On Explosive Hot 97 Call

‘I wouldn’t dare come on your stage and say something negative about Hot 97,’ Minaj says in heated radio interview. By Nadeska Alexis Nicki Minaj Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Hip-hop beefs come and go, and while some battles are fought lyrically and others are resolved under wraps, once in awhile they need to be aired out on public radio. Nicki Minaj called in to New York City’s Hot 97 on Monday night to do the latter, and she demanded that her conversation with DJ Funkmaster Flex be aired uncut and unedited. The YMCMB rapper was tuning in to address the controversy that started on Sunday when she pulled out of Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam concert in New Jersey after a brief tweet from Lil Wayne that read, “Young Money ain’t doing summer jam.” Word had gotten back to Weezy that Hot 97 personality Peter Rosenberg had disrespected Minaj, calling her single “Starships” “wack” and panning it for not being “real hip-hop.” To fans who were not at the show or watching the Summer Jam live stream, the first indication that things had gone sour were a series of tweets from Minaj’s account such as, “Wow. U ni–az just f—ed up history. But the President has spoken. #YMCMB.” During their heated discussion, which opened with Flex admitting that they’d already been arguing for an hour, Nicki Minaj was adamant in insisting that Rosenberg chose the wrong time and place to voice his negative opinions. “It’s not about his opinion, because I have opinions about DJs on Hot 97 and I have opinions on Hot 97,” she said. “But when it’s about us uniting people [for] your show, I wouldn’t dare come on your stage and say something negative about Hot 97, leading up to that concert.” “My fans at Summer Jam didn’t appreciate his comments, nor did my fans who were watching the live stream appreciate his comments,” she added. “This is streaming to the world. Nicki Minaj opened up that stream to show to kids in London and Paris. It was hosted on my website and those requests came from your station. I posted the links.” Flex countered that Nicki was overreacting when she listened to Lil Wayne and pulled out of the show, and he accused her of riling up fans on Twitter before dealing with the issue internally. But Minaj wasn’t having any of it, maintaining that what Weezy says goes. “I don’t go against the president of my label. Before I had New York radio, I had Wayne,” she said emphatically. “I will never go against Wayne. I can’t believe after all these years, he’s still teaching me. After a man goes onstage and disrespects me and tries to rile people up, I still was going on that stage, and shame on me. Lil Wayne gave me a valuable lesson in self-worth. He tweeted before he called me, and when I spoke to him he said, ‘Nick, we ain’t doing that show.’ ” Minaj explained that the attack felt extra-vindictive since she was the only woman on the roster (but not because she was the only woman on the roster), and plenty of yelling and screaming took place, sometimes punctuated by Minaj repeating Flex’s name slowly, in an effort to calm him down. One final issue that she needed to address was Flex’s earlier radio rant, when he defended Rosenberg and Hot 97 and made questionable remarks about her music sales . “When you give stats to the world, people listen to you, and it’s important that people know Nicki Minaj is actually out here selling records, singles and making money for Universal,” she said, rattling off the sales numbers she’s raked in with Pink Friday and Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, topping it off with my favorite line, “I get money.” It wouldn’t be completely accurate to say that things ended on a positive note, but it seems like Minaj had the upper hand here. Flex admitted that Rosenberg could’ve picked a better time to criticize her, and she still stuck by Wayne’s decision to pull her out of the show, reiterating, “This is my hometown. I wanted to come onstage for my fans, my Barbz, my babies.” When Flex made one final joking attempt to get an apology out of her, you can probably guess the tone of her response. “Excuse me?” No radio station that allowed someone to disrespect me is getting an apology.” What do you think about Minaj pulling out of the show following Rosenberg’s remarks?
