Diddy-Dirty Money Invite MTV News Aboard Last Train To Paris

‘I don’t think you’re an artist until people start looking at you like you’re crazy,’ Diddy says as Sway tags along for a day in the life of the trio. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Diddy-Dirty Money visit a Best Buy in Manhattan to sign some Last Train To Paris CDs Photo: MTV News When MTV News flipped on the camera to document Diddy-Dirty Money’s promotional grind for Last Train to Paris on Tuesday, the Bad Boy CEO was firmly in mogul mode, typing away on his smartphone as he sat in an SUV ready to hit the town with MTV News’ Sway for a daylong “RapFix Live” interview . But with Paris, the debut effort from Diddy-Dirty Money, on shelves, the businessman has to juggle the demands of both an artist and an executive — a type of multitasking he revealed he has not done for a long time. “I’ve just been so taken aback just by how it’s been received. I’m not used to being on that side,” Diddy said. The frontman also added that he feels vindicated by the positive reviews Paris has been scoring, despite dealing with critical side-eyes since the project was first announced. “I don’t think you’re an artist until people start looking at you like you’re crazy,” he said. “It’s been a couple years of people looking at me like I’m crazy, and I think that’s one of the things all the interviews and reviews have admitted. ‘Yeah, we thought he was crazy with the concept, but he proved to be right.’ ” When the ladies of Dirty Money, Dawn Richard and Kalenna Harper, entered the vehicle, the singers focused on the exhilaration of finally having the project available to the masses. “I’m so excited, Sway. It’s crazy,” Harper said. “We just keep staring at each other like, ‘We did it!’ ” When their Swizz Beatz-assisted track “Ass on the Floor” pumps through the speakers from New York’s Hot 97, it’s obvious how amped they are, bopping to the beat and spitting the lyrics. Even though Diddy isn’t new to the artist game, he maintained that the thrill of hearing his track hit the airwaves never goes away. Even with stacks of hits behind him, Diddy revealed that he still has a superstition he sticks to for every drop date. “You gotta buy 10 copies of your own album. It’s, like, something I’ve always done every year, for good luck,” he said. “It’s like [when] you vote. You vote for yourself, right?” The convoy arrived at Best Buy in New York’s Union Square a little while later, and staying true to his tradition, Diddy strolled down the aisles to find the Dirty Money records and picked out a stack. But the “Coming Home” rapper said the practice isn’t limited to artists, saying to fans, “You could buy 10 too. You could join in.” The star also urged gawking shoppers to throw down some cash in between posing for photos with fans. For some, a job where the boss is constantly around may be stressful, but Harper maintained that she appreciated having instant access to Diddy’s years of expertise and input. Richard added that being an integral part of the boss’ pet project also means it gets top priority. “It’s also dope because you know that the product will not go in vain because it’s the CEO and it’s his project,” she said. “You know that it’s gonna be 10 times more pushed because it is his baby.” Richard also added that the creative breadth of Paris, which ropes in everything from slinky house to jangly electro, afforded the ex-Danity Kane diva more creative freedom. “This is my third album, and having to conform so much in pop culture and people saying, ‘Oh, your voice isn’t this’ and ‘Your voice isn’t that,’ it was really refreshing to be able to do what I felt and be the tone [I wanted] and Kalenna to be able to sing the way we wanted to sing,” she explained. “I have a more rock/pop sound, but I do it over more hip-hop stuff. That was just something I didn’t feel like I had to conform [to] at all,” Harper said. “I just sounded like I sounded.” Later, the promo train headed back to the Bad Boy headquarters, where the trio got on a conference call with media outlets. When one journalist asked Diddy to respond to snipes that he’s no longer relevant, the star was quick with a retort. “They better turn on the TV, man, and walk outside and breathe some air. I’m like air, baby,” he said. “If I ain’t relevant, then who is?” The mogul later dropped in on an artist whose relevance in 2010 hasn’t really been contested: Justin Bieber . The teen sensation was working on some new music when Diddy stopped by to officially appoint him a member of the Dirty Money family, gifting him with a black-and-white “DM” letterman’s jacket. The mogul also hooked him up with the official “swag walk” of the Dirty Money crew, coolly instructing Bieber how to stroll and use his free hand for “pushin’ the hate back, ’cause there’s a lot of hate sometimes.” Proving he’s a quick study, Bieber suavely bopped along behind Diddy, pushing back the hate like a Dirty Money pro. T.I.’s No Mercy Debuts At #4 On Billboard

Susan Boyle holds tight to #1 on next week’s albums chart. By Gil Kaufman T.I.’s No Mercy Photo: Grand Hustle Records Susan Boyle has officially earned the honorary title of Christmas Queen. For the second year in a row, the “Britain’s Got Talent” runner-up is taking on all comers with a chart-topping holiday release that has a stranglehold on the top spot of the Billboard 200 albums chart. Her second release, The Gift, will once again take the pole position next week with sales of 243,000, giving her a five-week total north of 1.3 million, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The only new release to crack the top five is T.I.’s No Mercy, which comes in at #4. The album sold 159,000 just weeks after the King of the South reported to prison for an 11-month sentence tied to a probation violation from his 2007 federal weapons case. Also breaking into the top 10 is the “Tron Legacy” soundtrack from helmet-rocking techno duo Daft Punk, which moved 71,000 copies in its chart debut. The top 10 is otherwise just a shuffle of the usual suspects. Taylor Swift keeps her grip on the #2 spot with Speak Now, which sold 201,000 copies, pushing her past the 2.3 million mark in less than two months. Swift is followed by the “Glee” Christmas album (#3, 193,000), grade school reality-show opera singer Jackie Evancho’s O Holy Night EP (#5, 149,000), Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday (#6, 82,000), Josh Groban’s Illuminations (#7, 75,000), another “Glee” collection, Vol. 4 (#8, 74,000), and Rihanna’s Loud (#9, 71,000). After just two weeks in the top 10, Kanye West’s well-reviewed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy falls to #14 as sales shrank by 39 percent to 67,000. The Black Eyed Peas had an even harsher comedown for The Beginning, which drops 10 spots in week two to #16 (62,000, sales down 48 percent). Hard rockers Hinder enter the fray at #37 with All American Nightmare (35,000) while deadmau5 squeaks in at #47 with his album 4×4=12 (27,0000) and British soul siren Duffy hits #72 with her second album, Endlessly (18,000). My Chemical Romance are marching the wrong way on the chart with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, which drops 27 spots to #87 in its third week, selling just 15,000 copies. That’s gangbusters compared to season nine “American Idol” winner Lee DeWyze, who continues to struggle to get traction for his debut, Live It Up. The LP slides another 10 spots to #133 on sales of 9,000, giving him a one-month total just shy of 72,000. The “Glee” Christmas album is tops on the iTunes albums chart, besting T.I., who settles in at #2, followed by Kanye, “Tron,” deadmua5, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans, Hinder, Rihanna and the “Burlesque” soundtrack. The singles chart once again belongs to Katy Perry and her smash “Firework,” with Mars right behind with “Grenade.” They’re followed by the Black Eyed Peas’ “The Time (Dirty Bit),” Rihanna and Drake’s “What’s My Name,” Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R,” T.I.’s hookup with Eminem, “That’s All She Wrote,” Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow,” Trey Songz’s “Bottoms Up” and Enrique Iglesias’ “Tonight.” Next week should present the first challenge to Boyle’s domination with the arrival of late pop icon Michael Jackson’s first posthumous studio album, Michael, as well as new discs from R. Kelly, Diddy-Dirty Money, Ciara and the major-label debut of “Idol” runner-up Crystal Bowersox. Related Artists T.I. Susan Boyle Taylor Swift

Lil Wayne ‘Didn’t Understand’ His #7 Hottest MCs Ranking

‘Label me what you wanna label me,’ Weezy says during radio interview. By Alvin Blanco Lil Wayne Photo: John Parra/ WireImage Even while he was in the midst of his eight-month stay on Rikers Island, Lil Wayne still managed to land at #7 on MTV News’ 2010 Hottest MCs in the Game list. Weezy appeared on satellite-radio channel Shade 45 on Tuesday (December 14) and talked about what he considered to be a pretty low ranking. Host DJ Drama said he heard rumblings that, despite his incarceration, Wayne should have been higher on the list. Lil Wayne was #1 on the list in 2007 and had been in the top five until this year. Drama asked the rapper whether he was upset about where he fell on 2010’s list. “I was, I’m not gonna front, I was,” Weezy admitted. “I didn’t understand it. Somebody tried to explain it to me, like, ‘Nah, it was a list about this.’ They was trying to tell me it was some kinda, l don’t know. … It’s all good. Label me what you wanna label me; everybody know them n—as ain’t f—ing with me, man.” Drama then pointed out that Lil Wayne prot

‘Black Swan’ Duo Call Golden Globe Nominations ‘Huge’

MTV News catches up with director Darren Aronofsky and actress Mila Kunis after the good news. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman in “Black Swan” Photo: Fox Searchlight Reactions to Tuesday morning’s (December 14) Golden Globe nominations are coming in fast and furious, with a mix of pleasant surprise and full-on jubilation from the nominees. Two of those happy campers are “Black Swan” Best Director nominee Darren Aronofsky and Best Supporting Actress honoree Mila Kunis. MTV News was lucky enough to catch Aronofsky and Kunis on the phone for brief chats about their big news. “I’m in Paris bouncing around doing press,” Aronofsky said. “I got an e-mail last night from Scott [Franklin], my producer, and he was like, ‘The announcements come out tomorrow.’ That was the first I heard of it,” he admitted. “It’s always exciting. It means so much for these smaller films to get this type of recognition. It really helped us on ‘The Wrestler,’ and I’d imagine it’ll help us this time as well.” (Click here for photos of this year’s biggest nominees!) Aronofsky’s much buzzed-about supporting star Kunis was similarly out of the loop with the nomination news. “I’m in L.A. I genuinely didn’t know. I was happily asleep,” Kunis revealed. “I kind of just forgot. I went to sleep at midnight or 1 and all happy to sleep in till 10 a.m., and then my phone wouldn’t stop ringing at, like, 5:30 a.m. I was half-asleep, and I was like, ‘What the f—happened?’ I was like, ‘Somebody must have died.’ That’s how I found out.” Aronofsky said he and “Black Swan” actor Vincent Cassell already had plans to go out to dinner on Tuesday night, but now that dinner might include a celebratory bottle of champagne. Kunis, meanwhile, has some errands to run. “I have to take my dogs to the vet. And then I have to go do ADR for a film,” she said, referring to automated dialogue replacement, a process used by movies in post-production to have actors dub in lines that need to be tweaked or added to the finished film. “Maybe tonight. Maybe I’ll have some champagne. Is that what people do when they celebrate? Sloppy joes?” Kunis jokingly added that she’ll be making plans to take out the competition. “One person at a time. That’s the only way to do it, right?” she joked. “Are you kidding me? Being nominated is a huge thing for me.” Aronofsky went on to say that he is just plain excited — both for the film’s recognition and for its wider release and reception nationwide. “It’s working well in all the cities we’ve been in. I think there’s a lot of buzz,” he said. “The fear at the beginning when we were trying to raise the money was, who is this film for? It’s erotic. It’s ballet. It’s a horror film. Everyone thought it would fall through the cracks, and I just kept telling people, ‘Hey, we’re just trying to entertain people and have fun,’ and to get that back from the audience is the biggest thrill you can get.” Speaking of thrills, Kunis said this is about as good as it gets, and she won’t even think about Oscar talk. “No. I could never even allow myself to think about [an Oscar nomination],” she said. “I wouldn’t know what to do. I am so not a part of this world. For me to be nominated in any awards show is such a shock. I come from such a small town in the Ukraine! It wasn’t like at the age of 9 I said this is where I’d be at 27. This is not where I thought I’d be. I never thought this would happen, let alone at 27!” Aronofsky and Kunis’ other partner in crime, Best Actress nominee Natalie Portman, released a statement after hearing the news: “I’m very honored by the HFPA nomination, and to be included in this group of actresses I so admire. The experience of filming ‘Black Swan’ with [director] Darren Aronofsky and our incredible crew is already the most fulfilling experience of my career. The audience appreciation of the film is only furthering how grateful and proud I am to be part of the film.” What do you think of the chances for “Black Swan” at the Golden Globes? Nicole Kidman, Darren Aronofsky, More React To Golden Globe Noms

‘To be recognized for my work in a film that means so much to me is truly such an honor,’ Kidman says after Best Actress nod for ‘Rabbit Hole.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Eric Ditzian and Josh Horowitz Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole” Photo: Olympus James Franco dished to “Today” show host Matt Lauer about how he felt upon finding out that he’d received a Golden Globe nomination (he’s “grateful”), and now more and more stars are reacting to the news that they will be competing for a trophy at the awards show next month. Nicole Kidman, a Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) nominee for her work in “Rabbit Hole,” said in a statement, “It took more than four years to get our little movie off the ground, and to be recognized for my work in a film that means so much to me is truly such an honor. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press [Association] for your continued support.” “Black Swan” is up for four Golden Globe nods, including Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director for Darren Aronofsky, who explained, “I am very thankful to the HFPA for this honor. The prestige of the nominations draws attention to independent films like ‘Black Swan’ and I think helps get these small films made. I am also so thrilled for my actors Natalie [Portman] and Mila [Kunis] who gave me their spirits to film and risked losing toe nails every day.” Six-times-nominated screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, who got acknowledged this year for “The Social Network,” called his latest honor “humbling” and gave props to the others who helped shape the film. “I’ve had the time of my life working alongside my colleagues on ‘The Social Network’ and I’m grateful to the HFPA for recognizing their great, hard work,” he said. “On a personal note it’s humbling to be nominated alongside six of the best screenwriters in town.” “The Social Network” producer Scott Rudin added, “I couldn’t be more thrilled for my colleagues that we were recognized so richly this morning. Huge thanks to the HFPA for a big vote of confidence in our film — we’re very grateful and very honored.” “The Fighter” managed to scoop up a number of nominations, including one in the Best Motion Picture (Drama) category and nods for actors Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adams. Producer Ryan Kavanaugh told MTV News, “We never expected to have this number of nominations. It’s overwhelming and incredible and shocking. Mark said to me this morning, ‘I just kissed the ground and thanked God.’ It’s been such a labor of love for everyone involved and the movie is about perseverance and winning against all odds, and that’s what this movie has done.” Reprising his role as Gordon Gekko paid off for Michael Douglas, who received a Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for his work in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” The veteran actor, who has been battling throat cancer, said in a statement, “To be selected with these extraordinary nominees is an honor and boy was I ready for some good news!” In the TV world, scored a Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television nod for her role in “The Client List.” The star reacted by saying, “I am so thrilled and grateful for this nomination. When I first read the story that inspired the movie, I knew it was powerful material, and I’m so happy I had the chance to bring it to life.” The Golden Globe Awards will air on Sunday, January 16, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
