Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr . But only when you are on the inside looking out do you realize that Memphis’s true identity revolves around the community of people who not only champion King’s dream of equality, but push foward boldly with entrepreneurship, cuisine and culture. It makes Memphis one of the most unique cities in the United States. Recently, Bossip was invited to visit Memphis to get an intimate look at the city through the eyes of the men and women who have built it up into the enterprising hotbed that it has become. Let’s be clear, the food in Memphis is bomb, fie, lit, good af and whatever other savory superlatives you can cook up. That said, it wasn’t just the flavor of the food that earned Memphis’s culinary culture our high praise. It’s the pride that so many Black restauranteurs feel in serving their community and adding to the city’s legacy. We got a chance to speak to some enterprising sistas like Cynthia Daniels, founder of Memphis Black Restaurant Week, Chef Fran Mosely of HM Dessert Lounge, Ayren Moore-Alston of G. Alston Restaurant and Valerie Pevey, owner of The Office at Uptown. Each and everyone of them told the story of building their businesses from scratch and they credit generous Memphian support as the number one reason for their initial success and continued growth. In turn, these businesses reciprocate in offering opportunities to their communities. Image via Getty For example, the very first Black Restaurant Week took place on March 6-12, 2016. It was launched with 8 restaurants and as a result created 38 jobs. One-third of those turned into full-time positions due to the additional revenue. That’s community building. That’s pride. In speaking to people around the city, we couldn’t help but notice another source of Memphian pride, philanthropy. Memphis is one of the most charitable cities in the U.S. and the arts and culture in the city are better because of it. The Hattiloo Theater and founder Ekundayo Bandele exemplify this benevolence best. The New York native says that Memphis’ affluent Black residents had been longing to put their money into African-American theater, but had no outlet to do so. “There just never was that opportunity for Black wealth to invest in the city. So going to them and asking for $50,000 or $100,000, they were more than happy to do it.” Since 2006, that Black affluent support along with donations from white allies has allowed Hattiloo to flourish for over a decade and remain debt free in their multi-million dollar facility, a rarity in non-profit sector of the arts. Image via AFP/Getty Images Today, thousands are gathered in Memphis to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and there will without doubt be several replays of the famous “I’ve Been To The Mountaintop” speech he delivered the day before he died from a sniper’s bullet at the Lorraine Hotel. King’s speech was primarily a rallying cry in support of the sanitation worker’s strike, but he also spoke of “strengthening Black institutions”. The unprecedented success of Hattiloo and many other local Black-owned businesses are a realization of that ethos. We can only imagine the pride he would feel seeing the fruits of his labor. Cuisine and culture are not the only things bringing people together in Memphis, visionary infrastructure is as well. Crosstown Concourse is a sprawling mixed-use “urban village” that houses restaurants, retail spaces, health services, a charter high school, art gallery, podcast recording studio and almost 300 apartments. It’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen before and has helped bring over 800 new jobs to the area. Many of the property’s business models work in tangent and are geared toward providing opportunity in education and employment. With all due respect to the hope that Dr. King had for the future, we have to think even he would be pleasantly surprised by how the city of Memphis, Tennessee has banded together to turn a dream into a reality. No place is perfect, no place ever will be, but there is a huge difference between a place mired in the tragedies of the past injustices and Memphis, where the mountaintop of freedom is reached by cooperation, community and combating separatism. On Tuesday, April 3, the couple welcomed the birth of their first child. E ! was the first to report that Ronnie Ortiz-Magro is now a father . A source told them that Ronnie is “over the moon” over the birth of his baby girl. This is wonderful news and marks the beginning of the next chapter of Ronnie and Jen’s lives. The two of them haven’t yet made an official announcement, but it seems inevitable. And it’s not like they’ve been especially subtle about the news. … First of all, you know how Jersey Shore: Family Vacation is premiering on Thursday? Ronnie “mysteriously” skipped the premiere event. Fans who ere mystified by his absence didn’t have long to wonder about what could possibly On Monday night, Jen shared some messages with her fans and followers via Instagram stories. “Ron lands at seven so we have five hours,” she shared, while supported by her close friends. “I’m feeling very very uncomfortable.” It’s so sweet that she was so worried about Ronnie getting to be there for the childbirth. And it’s precious, but no surprise, that Ronnie dropped everything — including professional commitments — to race home to welcome his baby girl into the world. In addition to these not-so-subtle clues and E !’s announcement, MTV has confirmed to Us Weekly that the couple’s baby was born on Tuesday. There’s no telling when photos will be forthcoming, but for now, we hope that they’re all bonding and resting. Especially Jen. She’s the one who did the most work, obviously. Ronnie recently finished filming Jersey Shore: Family Vacation , a surprising but exciting revival of the classic reality series. In fact, Jen even appears alongside him in part of the Jersey Shore: Family Vacation teaser trailer . He joins other past and present costars like Snooki, Pauly D, and JWoww in becoming a parent. In fact, he’s even turned to each of them for advice, and shared that he’s really benefiting from that, because they each had different experiences. Of course, Farley warned him, reminding him that he had broken the hearts of many young woman during his wild youth. She says that it’s appropriate and fitting that he’ll raise a daughter while worrying about which men might break her heart. Since the cast was begging MTV to bring back Jersey Shore , ultimately leading to this revival, it’s pretty important to them. (Admittedly, for most of them, it’s probably the money that matters. But that’s okay — filming a reality series is work, and almost no one works for free) But it’s clear that Ronnie has his priorities in the right place, because he raced back to be with his wife while she gave birth to their child. That’s it! It’s officially official: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are getting married. We know, you figured this was official back when Harry proposed to Markle and, in nearly every way, you were correct in this assumption. But proposals can always be taken back; answers can always be changed. The real official way to know whether a couple plans on getting married or not takes place when the invitations go in the mail. There’s just no turning back at that point. So, with that in mind, Kensington Palace was excited to make an announcement on Thursday morning: The invitations are in the mail! “Invitations to the wedding of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle have been issued in the name of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales,” the Palace Tweeted today, adding: “Guests have been invited to the service at St George’s Chapel and to the lunchtime reception at St George’s Hall, which is being given by Her Majesty The Queen.” So there we have it. We’ve known for several weeks, of course, that Markle and Harry were getting married on May 19. The date has been circled on our calendar and multiple alarms have already been set to ensure we don’t sleep through the ceremony. But we now know the invitations were produced by Barnard & Westwood, a London-based printing company that has held a royal warrant for printing by appointment for the Queen since 1985 and Prince Charles since 2012. We also know the invitations are stamped in gold and that they feature Charles’ Three Feather Badge. Moreover, the guests’ names have added with a calligraphy printer. How do we know all of this? Because the Palace has also unveiled photos of the invites! EEEK!!!!!!! Clearly aware of the excitement and curiosity surrounding these nuptials, Kensington Palace also let folks in on how invitations were made, posting details and even a short video about the process on Twitter. “Lottie Small, who recently completed her apprenticeship, printed all of the invitations in a process known as die stamping, on a machine from the 1930s that she affectionately nicknamed Maude,” reads the official Royal social media account. The Palace notes that “using American ink on English card, the invitations are printed in gold and black, then burnished to bring out the shine, and gilded around the edge.” Fascinating, right? Almost as fascinating as the possibility that Markle may already be pregnant ! The Prince and the former Suits star confirmed their engagement in November. Since then, they have been making trips around the United Kington to meet local people and help acquaint Meghan with the causes and interests Harry supports. The stars bonded at the outset of their romance over shared charitable interests and endeavors. This invitation insight, meanwhile, arrives two days after the Palace announced that the couple asked Violet Bakery owner Claire Ptak of London to create a lemon elderflower cake for their reception. “I can’t tell you how delighted I am to be chosen to make Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s wedding cake,” the pastry chef said in a statement, concluding: “Knowing that they really share the same values as I do about food provenance, sustainability, seasonality and most importantly flavor, makes this the most exciting event to be a part of.” No word yet on who Harry will choose as his Best Man. Of all of the disastrous 90 Day Fiance couples that have graced our screens, few if any have been more controversial than Danielle Mullins and Mohamed Jbali. We know that Mohamed may face deportation after some paperwork vanished in transit, but … what has Danielle been up to? Resenting her ex and throwing shade on social media. Take a look at her latest jab. Now, Mohamed and Danielle’s split has been deeply acrimonious. Though they were one of those special 90 Day Fiance couples who do make it far enough to walk down the aisle at the end of their 90 days, these two seem to hate each other. Mohamed accused Danielle of stealing his money and identity during their marriage. Danielle has tried during their divorce process to get Mohamed deported … out of retaliation for him withholding sex from her during their marriage. Mohamed has since seemed to accuse Danielle of having an STI or some other sort of disease. And now, Danielle has posted this: “I don’t have [exes], I have examples of what not to do again,” it reads. Even teens can have exes, but the phrasing, the large font, and the “clever” sincerity make it appear marketed to Danielle’s exact demographic. Danielle enjoys sharing with her followers on social media. She posts things like recipes and family photos. But she’s not above dragging Mohamed Jbali from time to time. Danielle captioned this photo: “This is so true.” Interestingly, Danielle’s followers have seemed to take issue with the fact that, in real life and on social media, she has retained the name “Danielle Jbali” despite her enmity towards Mohamed. Fans were particularly outspoken under this post, since she did (indirectly) bring up Mohamed. They commented on it so much that Danielle felt that she had to speak out. “Drop the name [questions] already,” she writes. “I have chosen to use my legal name on my social media. I am living my life for me not fans of the show. My social media is mine and if you don’t like what I do unfollow me.” Danielle continues, explaining that she does not like the hate and hostility that she too often receives on social media. “We are humans like you. Just because we agreed to go on tv does not mean we have to put up with the negative comments and questions that is not your business. You keep calling other people names you will be blocked.” Fans accused her of hypocrisy, however, since she’s choosing to bash Mohamed while still using his name. “Stop talking about your “EXAMPLE” or bringing him up! It’s simple done and over with. @danielle_jbali no body cares you keep the name you could just change it on instagram it costs nothing. But you can keep it legally, just change it on instagram.” While it’s true that it costs precisely zero dollars to change your display name on social media (unlike legal name changes, which cost time and money), Danielle hit back at this critic. “if you don’t like what I post unfollow or I will help you.” Dang. Still, fans chimed in to defend Danielle. “People it’s her life if she wants to keep her last name or not it’s not a big deal and what she post on her page is her page don’t like it press unfollower button it’s that simple and happy 2018 year girl.” Some people keep an exes name because it’s how they’re known to the public. Others keep it because it’s the surname of their children. It’s always a personal choice. It’s a personal choice for Danielle, too. Image is everything. So tennis great Andre Agassi used to tell television viewers in commercials for Canon cameras. But this is a tagline that could easily be adopted by Kim Kardashian, someone who has dedicated most of her public persona to looking her absolute best at all times. This has been the case for nearly all of Kim’s life in the spotlight… … and it will apparently be the case when Kim is close to the end of her life. Allow us to explain: In a video she recorded with ELLE Magazine this week, the former sex tape actress explains to fans that she has inserted an unusual clause into her will. It doesn’t have to do with where her possessions go after Kim dies, but ratehr how her hair and makeup are done while she’s still alive. Says Kardashian in the footage: “I made a section [in my will] that if I am so out of it that I can’t even communicate – and I am like shitting on myself – I definitely need my hair, my nails and my makeup done.” We’re pretty sure she was being serious. In one sense, this is perfectly logical. Of course someone who even gets all dolled up while topless and eating noodles would want to maintain her appearance at all times, despite her health. In another sense, however, this is pretty sad. Poor Kim thinks so much about how fans view her, and has so much stock in her outer beauty, that she can’t imagine a day when she simply doesn’t care. She can’t imagine still being able to draw a breath without considering whether her nail color matches her eye shadow. Really, that’s no way to live, is it? In the aforementioned ELLE video, the 37-year old mother of three reads and confirms headlines from various publications prior to addressing the grooming clause in her last will and testament. “I want to look as good as possible,” she says simply, adding that nothing will stop her from posting “racy photos.” And, hey, look, we’re all for Kim Kardashian nude photos. Keep ’em coming, K-Squared! The point here is not that we want to see Kardashian wearing many layers of clothing in her social media photos. The point is simply that one should never be this concerned with one’s image. Agassi made the motto we cited above famous early on in his career, back when he wore neon colors on the court and had long, shaggy, sexy hair. Eventually, however, he grew up and matured and focused on tennis above all else, enjoying a second act to his career that included many Grand Slam titles and universal respect. He stopped caring about how he came across to others and cared only about succeeding in his job and satisfying those close to him with his play and his attitude.
