2010 US Open, First Round Scoreboard: K.J. Choi Headlines Quartet Tied For Lead At 2-Under, Mickelson 3-Over

With the morning groups halfway through their opening rounds at Pebble Beach, a quartet of golfers have moved into the early lead at the 2010 U.S. Open. K.J. Choi, Edoardo Molinari, Soren Kjeldsen and David Toms all sit at 2-under, through 13, 13, 13 and 8 holes respectively. Choi started off his round disastrously, bogeying and double-bogeying the first two holes, before bouncing back with five birdies to jump into a share of the lead. Toms and Kjeldsen have both recorded three birdies and a bogey thus far in their rounds, while Molinari has rung up four birdies, to go with two bogeys. Mike Weir and Ian Poulter lead a pack of golfers a shot back at 1-under, with Jim Furyk, who’s been something of a darkhorse pick to win the Open, behind them at even through 12 holes. Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson has struggled on his first day, sitting at 3-under through 11 holes after finding the drink on the 18th hole. Also of possible interest, noted golf enthusiast Tiger Woods will tee off at 4:36 PM EDT, in a powerhouse group that includes Ernie Els and Lee Westwood as well. Report: Segui visits Clemens grand jury (AP)

Former major leaguer David Segui has appeared before the federal grand jury investigating Roger Clemens for perjury. The New York Daily News reported that Segui testified for about 90 minutes Thursday. Segui declined comment to the paper as he left the grand jury room. Disappointed That The Celtics Lost Game 6? Blame Dane Cook

Some people in life just have a tendency to make people hate them. Comedian Dane Cook is one such person. So when he showed up with a gorgeous model as his date to Game 5 of the Celtics-Lakers series, we had all the ammo we needed. But now we come to find out the model in question was distracting the Celtics players? From the Boston Herald : Cook told us … that the woman in question is Jessica Caban, an aspiring actress and a former Miss Model Latina, whom he’s been dating for a few months. “It’s casual,” said the comedian, who looked rather proud. “I actually saw some of the guys looking at her,” Cook laughed. “And I thought, if they lose this game, I’m gonna get blamed.” And sure, this happened in Game 5, which the Celtics won, so it’s tough to blame Dane Cook and his “distraction” for the Celtics woes in L.A. two days later. But, “It’s casual,” he said, looking rather proud. What an unremitting douche. For my money, anything bad that happens, ever, should be blamed on Dane Cook. And Jessica. Jessica, Jessica, Jessica. Go rent Employee of the Month . You can do better.

Randy Jackson Hospitalized After Heart Attack

Randy Jackson – Michael’s younger brother, not the ring leader of the American Idol dawg pound – was hospitalized in Pasadena yesterday with chest pains. Later, E! confirmed that the 48-year-old had a mild heart attack. “Randy was admitted to the hospital yesterday,” the ailing Jackson’s assistant said. “He will be staying overnight . He suffered from a mild heart attack.” “Thank you for your concern. He is doing as well as expected.” As if this month wasn’t difficult enough for the family, with the anniversary of Michael’s death next week and Conrad Murray’s court proceedings underway. The singer checked into Huntington Memorial Hospital around noon yesterday and remains there Wednesday, where he is awaiting additional test results. The media wasted no time in swarming the hospital last night, and hospital spokeswoman Andrea Stalding released only the bare minimum statement: “By law, I can only confirm patients that are in our hospital database,” she said, refusing to confirm whether or not Randy was being treated at the time. The incident came one day after he appeared with siblings La Toya and Jermaine to watch a judge allow Dr. Conrad Murray to keep his medical license . Also on hand for that court date? Parents Joe and Katherine Jackson – just days after Joe blamed Michael’s death on Katherine . It’s been a rough week. Earlier this month, Randy tweeted his frustrations with the ongoing battle to protect his brother’s legacy and his own difficulty dealing with Michael’s death. “How do I cope?” he wrote. “I have a strong Christian faith & find power in prayer … although this month is hard.” It only gets harder too, sometimes. Here’s wishing Randy a fast, full recovery.

Is Karzai Losing The Faith?

Rumors are swirling in Afghanistan that the country’s president, Hamid Karzai, is losing faith in the capacity for the West to defeat the Taliban, and some are even accusing Karzai of trying to strike his own deal with the Taliban and arch-rival Pakistan. The rumors follow a dramatic meeting between Karzai and the just-resigned intelligence chief and interior secretary, both of whom defected from the administration after claims that Karzai was unwilling to show interest in evidence proving the Talbian’s culpability in a rocket attack earlier this month. —JCL The New York Times: Two senior Afghan officials were showing President Hamid Karzai the evidence of the spectacular rocket attack on a nationwide peace conference earlier this month when Mr. Karzai told them that he believed the Taliban were not responsible. “The president did not show any interest in the evidence — none — he treated it like a piece of dirt,” said Amrullah Saleh, then the director of the Afghan intelligence service. Mr. Saleh declined to discuss Mr. Karzai’s reasoning in more detail. But a prominent Afghan with knowledge of the meeting, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Mr. Karzai suggested in the meeting that it might have been the Americans who carried it out. Minutes after the exchange, Mr. Saleh and the interior minister, Hanif Atmar, resigned — the most dramatic defection from Mr. Karzai’s government since he came to power nine years ago. Mr. Saleh and Mr. Atmar said they quit because Mr. Karzai made clear that he no longer considered them loyal. Jonah Hill for “World Toilet Spokesman”

I didn’t start off wanting to make a gross-out movie. But two days into shooting “The World’s Toilet Crisis” for Current TV’s Vanguard documentary series, I had to admit that I was pretty disgusted. From a massive sewage treatment plant just south of Los Angeles to India’s once-sacred, now polluted Yamuna River, my team of producers and I had set off on a mission to track how the lack of sanitation in many countries has had a devastating impact on public health. I could tell you we were looking for clean water amidst the contamination, but that’s just being polite, and being polite is part of the problem. It’s a very big part of how even in the 21st century, some 2.6 billion people—40 percent of the world’s population—are still defecating in the open rather than in toilets connected to a proper sewage treatment system. We went to India and Indonesia because we were looking for shit. When people defecate in rivers, fields and gutters, the water becomes contaminated with shit. Food gets contaminated. And people get sick. An estimated 2 million deaths a year, largely among children, could be prevented by improving access to toilets. And yet very little has been done to end the world’s toilet crisis. One reason for the inaction is that few people—and almost no one with the political or popular cache to command international attention—have stepped forward to speak plainly about what’s happening and what’s at stake. Jack Sim, a businessman who founded the World Toilet Organization, has spearheaded efforts in Indonesia to make toilets both affordable and desirable. But as Sim told me, there’s no “Angelina Jolie of toilets.” I don’t think the movement needs an Angelina Jolie. I think it needs someone like Jonah Hill—who in “Get Him to the Greek” spends what seems like half the movie mired in scatological humor—or any of the other actors in hit gross-out comedies who have made a living and a name for themselves making fart jokes. Let’s face it, talking about toilets would be a classy step up from this: If we want to seriously address the fact that 40 percent of the world’s population lack a simple flush toilet—which The Lancet, a British medical journal, called the most important health innovation of the last 150 years—we’re all going to have to be willing to get a little grossed out. The World’s Toilet Crisis” airs Wednesday, June 9 at 10/9c on Current TV. added by: Adam_Yamaguchi
