Lady Gaga Is MTV News’ Woman Of The Year

Massive tour, event videos and social causes earn Gaga her second-straight Woman of the Year title. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lady Gaga didn’t even release a proper album in 2010, and somehow, she managed to become an even bigger star. This had as much to do with the fact that she kept working with what she had — the endless tour, the incomparable videos — as it did with her harnessing her hard-fought stardom and attempting to become a force for social change. She spoke out loudly and proudly in support of gay rights and in opposition to the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, and, in the process, she became the kind of star we haven’t seen in decades: One unafraid to offend, no matter how much she stood to lose. (They’re more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!) And that fearlessness — coupled with her continued chart success and her envelope-pushing event videos — is why we’ve chosen Lady Gaga as MTV News’ Woman of the Year. It’s the second-consecutive year she’s taken home the honor , which is sort of fitting. After all, no one has dominated both the musical and pop-culture landscapes quite like she has over the past 24 months. This year, she just dominated differently. And so, in honor of her reign, here’s a look back at Lady Gaga’s 2010, a year in which she moved from pop icon to genuine social force. 2010 Highlights : Gaga began 2010 much like she ended 2009: on tour. In January, she wowed audiences with a triumphant four-night run at New York’s Radio City Music Hall and then stole the show at the Grammys with her Elton John duet and appropriately outrageous attire . She teamed with Cyndi Lauper for the MAC AIDS Fund VIVA Glam campaign and paid tribute to the late Alexander McQueen with a performance at the Brit Awards . In February, she began teasing both her revamped Monster Ball Tour and her upcoming “Telephone” video , which would catapult her to even greater fame. Directed by Jonas

Nicole Richie’s Mom Nipple Cheating in a Bikini of the Day

I have a pretty deep rooted hatred for Good Charlotte sisters. I am really not sure where that problem started or why, because they hit the music scene long after I knew what a music scene was, cuz I was not a teenage girl – and I was nottrying to sleep with one….and even if I was, I would have avoided their mainstream smut as hard as I could…. For some reason, their suburban punk with their strategic tattoos, and the fact that I was convinced they used to fuck each other cuz they felt it was just next level twin masturbation, used to really irritate me….for no reason other than they fucking sucked… I also have a pretty deep rooted hatred for Nicole Richie. Not only is she a worthless unwanted baby of some groupie trash who pawned her off to live the good life with Lionel, but she’s also a rude little cunt. She killed DJ AM, she blocked me on twitter, she used to have no sense of humor when I’d prank call her, and she just fucking sucks….She’s a troll, she’s not hot, she’s not interesting, she does nothing with her privileged life but waste space….she just fucking sucks…. So when I heard she was in Mexico with a new man, I was happy, because it meant maybe Good Charlotte will kill himself for his failure as a dad….but then realized that I hate her equally and can only hope before Good Charlotte kills himself, he brings her down too…only to discover she’s with Sam Ronson, another crackhead who totally turned on me after she used to text me all the time for press and call me up to hang when she was in Montreal…..adding a third layer to this ugly, irrelevant, rich kids who don’t do anything important, love triangle, that I hope also ends in bloodshed….. But she was in her bikini, and I do see her mom nipple I doubt her kid sucked on….cuz that’s too much work for Nicole Richie’s laziness…these people are all fucking trash…I hate giving them attention that makes them feel relevant… To see more shitty pics of Nicole Richie’s shitty body in a shitty bikini cuz she’s shitty…Follow this link GO

UN scientists say ozone layer depletion has stopped

The protective ozone layer in the earth's upper atmosphere has stopped thinning and should largely be restored by mid century thanks to a ban on harmful chemicals, UN scientists said on Thursday. The “Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion 2010” report said a 1987 international treaty that phased out chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) — substances used in refrigerators, aerosol sprays and some packing foams — had been successful. Ozone provides a natural protective filter against harmful ultra-violet rays from the sun, which can cause sunburn, cataracts and skin cancer as well as damage vegetation. First observations of a seasonal ozone hole appearing over the Antarctic occurred in the 1970s and the alarm was raised in the 1980s after it was found to be worsening under the onslaught of CFCs, prompting 196 countries to join the Montreal Protocol. “The Montreal Protocol signed in 1987 to control ozone depleting substances is working, it has protected us from further ozone deplation over the past decades,” said World Meteorological Organisation head of research Len Barrie. “Global ozone, including ozone in the polar region is not longer decreasing but not yet incresing,” he told journalists. The 300 scientists who compiled the four yearly ozone assessment now expect that the ozone layer in the stratosphere will be restored to 1980 levels in 2045 to 2060, according to the report, “slightly earlier” than expected. Although CFCs have been phased out, they accumulated and persist in the atmosphere and the effect of the curbs takes years to filter through. The ozone hole over the South Pole, which varies in size and is closely monitored when it appears in springtime each year, is likely to persist even longer and may even be aggravated by climate change, the report said. Scientists are still getting to grips with the complex interaction between ozone depletion and global warming, Barrie explained. “In the Antarctic, the impact of the ozone hole and the surface climate is becoming evident,” he said. “This leads to important changes in surface temperature and wind patterns, amongst other environmental changes,” Barrie added. CFCs are classified among greenhouse gases that cause global warming, so the phase out “provided substantial co-benefits by reducing climate change,” the report found. Barrie estimated that it had avoided about 10 gigatonnes of such emissions a year. However, the ozone-friendly substances that have replaced CFCs in plastics or as refrigerants – hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) — are also powerful greenhouse gases. HFCs alone are regarded as 14,000 times more powerful than carbon dioxide (CO2), which is the focus of international efforts to tackle climate change, and HFC emissions are growing by eight percent a year, according to UN agencies. “This represents a further potential area for action within the overall climate change challenge,” said UN Environment Programme chief Achim Steiner in a statement. added by: JanforGore

Donnis To Join Matt & Kim On Tour

‘They’re like the king and queen of hipster music,’ upstart Atlanta MC says of hitting the road with dance/punk duo for a few October dates. By Jayson Rodriguez Donnis Photo: MTV News Donnis is a busy man these days, he recently put out two mixtapes: The Invitation, hosted by DJ Holiday and Infamous, and Fashionably Late helmed by Clinton Sparks, DJ Ill Will and Rockstar. Now the Atlanta rapper has just put the finishing touches on his first EP, also titled Fashionably Late and due September 28. Donnis shot a video with BBGun (the Roots, J.Cole) for “Tonight,” the first offering from the EP, in Tokyo. The location is significant because Donnis was once stationed in the region while serving in the military. And now the upstart is gearing up to head out on tour with dance/punk duo Matt & Kim. “We’re about to do the East Coast and the whole southern region,” Donnis told MTV News. “It’s something a little different for me. A lot of people are like, ‘Why are Matt & Kim and Donnis going on tour?’ But I’m a huge fan of theirs and they’re a huge fan of mine. At first I was like, ‘I don’t know.’ But we have a great relationship and I’m a huge fan of their music. I think a lot of people are a huge fan of their music . A lot of people talk about hipster music, and they’re like the king and queen of hipster music, so it’s awesome to be rolling with them. I’m excited.” The tour is a promo run for the release of Matt & Kim’s Sidewalks album and it kicked off this week landing in Columbus Ohio on Friday (September 17). Donnis will join the bill on October 14 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and stay on through the October 31 date in New York. Tour dates, according to Matt & Kim’s label:

Lady Gaga Book Shows Monster Ball Behind The Scenes

Photographer Terry Richardson follows singer everywhere, Gaga tells Vogue Hommes Japan. By James Dinh Lady Gaga Photo: Matt Harper/ MTV News Dressing up as her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone, isn’t the only surprise Lady Gaga has in store for fans in the upcoming issue of Vogue Hommes Japan. The singer, who is decked out in a string of raw meat with an open mouth on an alternate cover of the mag, dished about an upcoming Monster Ball book with photographer Terry Richardson and incorporating her artistic vision with another photographer, Steven Klein, on her “Alejandro” clip. “He wanted to do a book about the Monster Ball,” she says in the magazine, which hit stands Sunday. “He wanted to shoot me backstage, not onstage, and look at who I am offstage. He’s on the bus with me. He just follows me everywhere. He’ll photograph me when I’m changing — those quick changes during the show. And sometimes I’ll have to pee during the show, and I’m always screaming, ‘Terry, get out!’ ” But Gaga believes that Richardson remains keen on keeping the project full of candid moments, saying, “And he’ll be saying, ‘It’s so beautiful. You’re so punk!’ If only my fans knew I was peeing in a beer cup backstage.” Whether it’s her red-carpet fashion or the outfits donned during her everlasting Monster Ball Tour, the singer has always had an eye for pushing the fashion envelope . Things were no different when she had the opportunity to work on her “Alejandro” video with another critically acclaimed photographer: Steven Klein. “We are both very strong-willed, and we both have very specific visions,” she said. “And I knew his specific vision and he knew mine so that it was like tugging at a rope together.” But Mother Monster has ended up tying what she calls “a beautiful knot” with Klein despite their creative differences. “I wanted to bring him out of his comfort zone, and he wanted to bring me out of mine,” she explained. “I think what made the ‘Alejandro’ video so successful was getting Steven to look at pop choreography and my aesthetic in putting things that are really interesting of how to sell messages and metaphors into a pop landscape, so it suddenly becomes universal and means something completely different. And him stripping me down, taking off all my makeup, no eyelashes, no liner, saying ‘I’m cutting all of your hair off’ and not tanned. … For me, I was hyperventilating, but it did force me to be myself.” Being a pop star who takes her image by the reins only makes Gaga comparable to her idols of earlier decades, she says. “Everybody knew about it. It wasn’t like you had to do the research or pull the references back then. It seemed innately part of who everybody was,” she said, comparing herself to pop stars from the ’70s. “The art and the fashion and the music world were all intertwined, and I guess that is the world that I live in today just through who I truly am.” Are you excited for Gaga’s upcoming project with Terry Richardson? Eminem And Jay-Z Aren’t First Megastar Concert Pairing

Guns N’ Roses and Metallica, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, more paved the way By Gil Kaufman Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Kristian Dowling/ Getty Images When Jay-Z and Eminem take the stage in Detroit at Comerica Park on Thursday and Friday and again in New York at Yankee Stadium on September 13 and 14, it be a meeting of two of the biggest names in rap, who between them have sold more than 120 million albums. But their pairing is just the latest mega-coupling in the history of tours that promised to bring together the best of both worlds (sorry, Jay and R. Kelly , we tried not to bring that one up). Among our favorites: Guns N’ Roses and Metallica This volcanic 1992 outing featuring the biggest rock band in the world and the thrash legends who would soon snatch that crown was every bit as explosive as anticipated. With unpredictable act Faith No More in the opening slot (after Nirvana reportedly declined), the three-month stadium tour featured plenty of drama, including Metallica singer James Hetfield suffering second- and third-degree pyro burns during a show in Montreal, which turned into a riot after Guns singer Axl Rose left the stage complaining of a sore throat. Wu-Tang Clan and Rage Against the Machine At the height of their powers in 1997, bomb-throwing Los Angeles rockers Rage teamed up with the equally incendiary rap crew for what was slated to be a triumphant tour of amphitheaters and arenas. But in a sign of how shook Rage had the authorities, police in a number of cities tried to get the shows canceled fearing Rage’s alleged “anti-law-enforcement” stance, to no avail. Due to internal pressure within the sometimes-fractious Wu-Tang, some missed shows and an alleged assault, the Clan dropped off after less than two weeks of shows, replaced by the Roots and Foo Fighters. Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera The Justified / Stripped Tour may go down as the last hurrah of the teen-pop era. The 2003 joint tour between the former ‘NSYNC legend and the pop diva was a high-tech, big-budget extravaganza that found both singers at the peak of their powers. Eminem, 50 Cent, Lil Jon, G-Unit and D12 It was a rap monster, with the Slim Shady and 50 headlining the Anger Management 3 amphitheater outing that would mark the last full-fledged tour by Eminem in the past five years. Marshall Mathers would end up canceling the European leg of the tour in order to check into rehab for a prescription-medicine addiction. There are plenty of others, too, many of them on the classic-rock tip, including the unlikely pairing of two former Van Halen singers, David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar , in 2002; the 1995 pairing of Neil Young and Pearl Jam; and the ongoing collaboration between the world’s leading piano men, Elton John and Billy Joel. History is also filled with tours that never happened that were as exciting on paper as some of the ones that have, including the scotched dual-headlining Fame Kills extravaganza promised by Lady Gaga and Kanye West last year. That eye-popping spectacle was grounded after West went into hiding following his bum-rush of Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards. Then there was the Big Four Tour featuring Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax that has reportedly been brewing for two years but has yet to happen. Instead, it turned into this year’s American Carnage Tour with Slayer, Megadeth and Testament. What is your favorite superstar bill? Let us know in the comments below! Former ‘Canadian Idol’ Contestant Arrested In Terrorist Plot

Khurram Sher, charged in connection with a bombing plot in Canada, tried out for the show in 2008. By Gil Kaufman Khurram Sayed Sher on “Canadian Idol” Photo: CTV A Montreal man authorities have charged with conspiracy in a terrorist plot to bomb sites in Canada and abroad tried out for “Canadian Idol” with a moonwalking, robot popping, off-key version of Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” in 2008 that amused judges, but has confused authorities. Khurram Sayed Sher made a bid for the Northern version of “Idol” two years ago and was featured in the televised audition rounds as one of the lesser talents, with the Winnipeg Free Press reporting that he got a thumbs-up for his dance moves from the judges, but no love for his shaky vocals. “That was some genuine crap singing,” judge Zack Werner said at the time. “It’s sort of absurd. It is a little weird,” said Jake Gold, one of the judges on the Canadian show. “He was a funny guy. At the same time, it’s not a laughing matter.” Sher, a native of Pakistan, appeared on the show wearing a traditional shimmering green salwar kameez outfit, typically worn in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and a Pashtun hat and speaking in a thick accent that disappeared when he sang. He told judges he was from Pakistan and came to Canada in 2005. But those who knew him when he attended medical school at McGill University in Montreal told the Toronto Star that Sher was born in Montreal, had no accent and seemed very “westernized.” One unnamed person who reportedly knew him well said he used the fake Pakistani accent and wore the traditional clothes as a goof. “He did it as a joke,” the friend said. Sher, 28, a hockey player and father of three, is a pathologist who graduated from one of Canada’s most prestigious medical schools, and was a humanitarian aid worker who helped earthquake survivors in Pakistan in 2005. He was arrested on Tuesday after Canadian authorities alleged he was part of a terrorist conspiracy. He was named in court documents as being part of a conspiracy in Ottawa to “knowingly facilitate terrorist activities” in Canada and abroad, including a plot to build and detonate remote-controlled bombs in Canada.
