Was the verdict fair? Black Teen Who Shot Baby In Stroller Found Guilty An African-American teenager has been convicted of murder in the killing of a 13-month-old toddler in Georgia. Via The Grio reports: De’Marquise Elkins was found guilty of shooting Antonio Santiago in the face at point-blank range in a botched robbery on March 21 in Brunswick. It took the jury took about two hours to convict the 18-year-old. He was convicted on all 11 counts, including two counts of felony murder and one count of malice murder. Because he was 17 at the time of the shooting he will not face the death penalty under the state law. Elkins now faces a life behind bars. Prosecutors say Elkins and an accomplice, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, stopped Sherry West and the older teen pointed a gun at her and demanded money before shots were fired. Lang testified against Elkins during the trial and said the older teen fired the weapon. The 15-year-old is to be tried later. Elkins’ attorney, Glynn County Public Defender Kevin Gough, said during the trial that it can’t be ruled out that “one or both parents” may have been involved in their son’s death. West has a history of mental illness and there were no eyewitnesses to the killing except West’s version of events. During the two-week trial the West’s adult daughter, Ashley Glassey, testified against her mother. She was uneasy West phoned her the day her brother was killed for advice on cashing in on his insurance policy. She also testified her mother’s account of what happened on the day kept on changing. The killing of Santiago on March 21 drew national attention and exposed simmering tension in the coastal city of Brunswick, with opinion sharply divided along racial lines. The court case was moved to Marietta because of the extensive publicity surrounding the case. At the start of the trial lawyer Gough objected to the racial makeup of potential jurors. After the verdict, Gough issued a statement that he plans to appeal. He told reporters the all-white jury could be one basis for requesting a new trial. “That was not a jury of his peers,” he said. Elkins’ mother, Karimah Elkins, was on trial alongside him and was found guilty of tampering with evidence but acquitted of lying to police. Do you think the teens were unfairly judged?

Teen Sues State For Forcing Her Into Legal Relationship According to Mail Online A teenage girl is suing a US state for allegedly forcing her into a legal relationship with the man who had forced sex with her. The unnamed victim from Massachusetts was aged 14 when she had forced sex at her home in 2009 by Jamie Melendez, 24, who was then 20, before she became pregnant and eventually gave birth to his child. The man who had forced sex with her met the schoolgirl at a church youth group in Norfolk in the state and was sentenced to 16 years’ probation and later ordered to pay $110 a week in child support to her by a family court. But last year Melendez filed a petition in a family court to argue that he should have visitation rights if he is forced to pay child support to the girl. She is expected to now have to fight this in family court. He also offered to no longer request these rights if the child maintenance order was made void. His victim was a middle school student at the time of the attack but recently graduated from high school. The girl’s lawyer Wendy Murphy criticised the original decision to force Melendez to pay child support as ‘outrageous’ and said it framed his behaviour as something ‘other than a serious crime’. She told ABC: ‘My client is very worried she’ll have to send her daughter off to this man she doesn’t know, and tell her she’ll be going off on visits with the man who raped her mother and created her. ‘She wants nothing to do with this guy. She doesn’t want a 16-year relationship with him.’ The attorney added that the girl is concerned about risking losing the custody of her child if she does not participate in the family court proceedings. Melendez – who had known his victim for three years before the attack – had gone to the girl’s house when he knew her mother would not be home, and pressured her into having sex with him. ‘She wants nothing to do with this guy. She doesn’t want a 16-year relationship with him’ She had asked a state criminal court judge to order Melendez to pay criminal restitution instead of child support – and free her from any legal relationship or proceedings with him. But this was refused – and an application for review to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court also failed, as well as a further appeal. She is now suing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Federal Court and wants an annulment of the court order, reported Courthouse News. We understand he technically has rights as the father, but forcing someone into a legal relationship with the man who had forced sex with them is ridiculous.

Of particular importance in aging, however, seems to be the changes that occur in the cell’s power plant — the mitochondrion. This structure is located in the cell and generates most of the cell’s supply of ATP which is used as a source of chemical energy. “The mitochondria contains their own DNA, which changes more than the DNA in the nucleus, and this has a significant impact on the aging process,” said Nils-Göran Larsson, Ph.D., professor at the Karolinska Institutet and principal investigator at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Aging, and leader of the current study alongside Lars Olson, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Neuroscience at the Karolinska Institutet. “Many mutations in the mitochondria gradually dis-able the cell’s energy production,” said Larsson. For the first time, the researchers have shown that the aging process is influenced not only by the accumulation of mitochondrial DNA damage during a person’s lifetime, but also by the inherited DNA from their mothers. “Surprisingly, we also show that our mother’s mitochondrial DNA seems to influence our own aging,” said Larsson. “If we inherit mDNA with mutations from our mother, we age more quickly.” Normal and damaged DNA is passed down between generations. However, the question of whether it is possible to affect the degree of mDNA damage through lifestyle intervention is yet to be investigated. All that the researchers know now is that mild DNA damage transferred from the mother contributes to the aging process. “The study also shows that low levels of mutated mDNA can have developmental effects and cause deformities of the brain,” said lead author Jaime Ross, Ph.D., at the Karolinska Institutet. “Our findings can shed more light on the aging process and prove that the mitochondria play a key part in aging; they also show that it’s important to reduce the number of mutations,” said Larsson.
