TRIBECA: ‘Before Midnight’ − Richard Linklater Hints That A Fourth Film Could Happen

After Midnight ,  anyone?  The Richard Linklater -directed Before Midnight doesn’t premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival until 6 pm. on Monday, but an hour before curtain time the filmmaker hinted that a fourth film in a sequence that began with Before Sunrise in 1995 and Before Sunset in 2004, was not out of the question. Linklater joined the co-stars of the latest installment of his realistic romance,   Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy , at the Tribeca Talks Directors series , and one of the final questions asked of the director was whether the third film was intended to tie up the romance between the American Jesse (Hawke) and the French Céline  (Delpy)  18 years after they met on a train traveling to Vienna. In the third film, Jesse and Celine are not just together they have two daughters in tow as they vacation and bicker in romantic Greece.  Watch the trailer and then I’ll get to Linklater’s response: Ode to a Grecian Yearn Linklater answered the festival goer’s question by responding that Before Midnight was about capturing “that moment” in Céline and Jesse’s lives. “It wasn’t a summation. It’s definitely not a final vibe,” he said, before adding his own twist on a spoiler: “They’re both still alive at the end of the movie…There might be another one. Who knows?”  But, he concluded that he and his cast didn’t have to think about it for at least another five years or so. This could be good news for fans of the film series, which has a die-hard following thanks to its warts-and-all approach to romance and relationships. If the film is as good as the early buzz indicates, the sequel could be inevitable and not take nine years to come out.  Oddly enough, although a nine-year time span separates the first and second and then the second and third movies, Linklater told festival goers that Before Midnight was scheduled to shoot this coming summer but production was moved up when the three collaborators realized that they each had openings in their schedules last summer.  The symmetrical nine-year space between the movies “was kind of a coincidence,” Linklater said. ‘Dodgeball’ Sequel − Good For Humanity & Lance Armstrong, Too?

Let the rehabilitation of Lance Armstrong begin?   The Hollywood Reporter reports that Ben Stiller and his producing partner Stuart Cornfeld have commissioned screenwriter Clay Tarver to write a sequel to Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story , and I think it could be a key public-relations opportunity for the disgraced Tour de France cyclist. If  your memory needs recycling (ba-dump-bump!), Armstrong appears in a key cameo in the movie, where Vince Vaughn’s character, Average Joe’s Gym owner Peter La Fleur is about to quit his underdog team and Armstrong shames him into reconsidering . In the aftermath of Armstrong’s doping scandal, that scene looks ironic and tragic today. But…America loves comeback stories, and if the former champion would be willing to take it on the chin comedically, I bet he could make a little progress in rehabilitating his tarnished image post-Oprah. The sequel is supposed to be about Vaughn’s character and Stiller’s character, White Goodman from Globo Gym , teaming up to battle “an even bigger threat,” as the publication reported.  And Armstrong’s cameo could be as simple as having him seek redemption on La Fleur’s team or play for one of the competitors that Average Joe’s faces.  Either way, he should get beaned real good in a creative elimination scene. Even better: an encounter between La Fleur and Armstrong that would reference the first cameo. Once again, Armstrong would have to agree to take it on the chin. That could be deep and cathartic in a comedic way. It would definitely be more effective than drumming for the reggae band Lance Herbstrong, which Armstrong did on April 20 at the Austin Reggae Festival: Give The Drummer Some…Redemption While we’re on the subject of returning Dodgeball characters, Jason Bateman ‘s loopy ESPN 8 — The Ocho! — color commentator Pepper Brooks is a must . INTERVIEW: Rob Zombie Says ‘The Lords of Salem’ Is ‘Pretty Out There’ But ‘The Walking Dead’ Is Not

What horror fan doesn’t watch  The Walking Dead ?  Musician and filmmaker Rob Zombie jokes it’s because he needs to catch up on  Cheers first, but the reality is he’s a horror purist who takes the genre very seriously.  That dedication led to Bob Weinstein handpicking him to relaunch the  Halloween   franchise back in 2007, and  Paranormal Activity   and  Insidious  producers Jason Blum and Oren Peli seeking out Zombie to direct an original horror flick. They certainly got one in The Lords of Salem . Blum and Peli gave Zombie complete creative control over the feature, and he marvels at what that freedom allowed him to accomplish.  “I remember the first time I watched this movie with an audience.  The whole last chunk of the movie I was like ‘Wow. This really could only be made without studio meddling,” Zombie told me, adding: “‘ Cause it’s pretty out there .” How out there?  Zombie said friends have told him “Man, it’s weird.  No, it’s weirder than that…No, it’s still weirder than that!” But Zombie says he doesn’t worry about his work being accepted by the mainstream.  “I really just do what I like,” he explained. “I don’t understand what the general public likes sometimes.” In fact, Zombie feels there’s only two things you can count on with universal appeal: Coca-Cola and the Beatles . WATCH: Aubrey Plaza’s ‘To Do List’ Video Channels Seminal Food Culture Moment

If Aubrey Plaza is looking to redeem herself  after Sunday’s half-assed ploy for attention at the MTV Movie Awards , she and the producers of her big summer movie, The To Do List , should pack up the video clip they debuted during the show (posted below) and head to California’s Bay Area where, not surprisingly, the next regrettable trend in food culture is evolving: semen cocktails . As SFWeekly reported (via The Huffington Post ), there’s a new book out by “semen-cooking enthusiast” Paul “Fotie” Photenhauer  called Semenology: The Semen Bartender’s Handbook, which provides a tutorial in the preparation of seminal-fluid laced cocktails such as the “Macho Mojito,”  the “Watermelon Gin Jizz” and the “Galliano Cum Shot” — no word on whether that requires the participation of controversial fashion designer John Galliano or merely a shot or two of the sweet yellow Italian liqueur. Watching The To Do List clip that premiered exclusively on Sunday’s awards show, I sensed an opportunity. The huckster in me sees Plaza and the movie’s marketing team generating some real attention by targeting semen foodies with a daring tie-in:  a straight-up organic pineapple-juice-infused body shot, so to speak, based on the premise of this clip. Plaza’s Pineapple Cocktail Have Plaza preside over a demonstration/photo op at San Francisco’s most cutting-edge bar and, let me tell you, no one will remember last Sunday.   Will Ferrell might even be impressed. I hear he likes his margaritas salty. Aubrey’s Not-So-Epic Fail Will Ferrell Responds: [ MTV ,  SFWeekly , Huffington Post ]  Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter. Follow Movieline on  Twitter.

Selena Gomez Is A Confused Mess

I don’t know what’s more distracting about these pictures of Selena Gomez getting into a car wearing a see-through top, the awkward angle, the mom shorts, or whatever the hell that is on her forehead. It wasn’t there at the MTV Movie Awards the other day, but I’m pretty sure I remember seeing her pal Vanessa Hudgens with something similar at Coachella . So if there’s going to be a new fashion trend sweeping young Hollywood hotties, is it too late to switch it to see-through booty shorts instead of dumb forehead jewelry? Mystery Man on Roof Captivates Twitter, Boston Bombing Conspiracy Theorists

Who is the mystery man on the roof? That’s what Twitter and Boston bombing conspiracy theorists want to know in the wake of yesterday’s explosions. A photo credited to Suffolk University junior Dan Lampariello shows the instant of two Boston Marathon bombings that occurred near the finish line Monday. The photo, and with it Mystery Man on Roof, went viral. Lampariello told ABC News Monday “I was about 200 feet from the finish line … right in front of the Mandarin Hotel. My aunt was running in the marathon.” “We were out there to cheer her on. We thought maybe it was fireworks at first, but when we saw the second explosion we knew something was wrong.” As if the Internet weren’t going berzerk enough over blasts that killed at least three people and injured more than 170 more, many gravely, there’s this. Police say they have no suspects yet, and no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which only feeds interest in the MMOR. A lack of real leads – the alleged suspect in custody is not believed to have been involved, and his name has not been released – breeds speculation. Here’s what is happening on the investigative front: Last night, agencies raided a unit in a high-rise apartment on Ocean Drive in the seaside Boston suburb of Revere, according to local police officials. Several bags, including what appeared to be a large duffel bag, were removed from the scene. Details are scarce, but the search was related to the case. Boston police also issued a BOLO for a yellow Penske rental van that apparently attempted to access the race course area shortly before the blast. They are also looking for a “black man wearing a black hoodie and a black backpack” who was turned away from a secure area shortly before the bombings. As for Mystery Man on Roof? He could be the perpetrator of this senseless act of terrorism … or just a guy looking for an awesome vantage point for one of the city’s coolest events. Probably the latter … but don’t let logic stop you, Twitter.
