Matt Damon And Michael Douglas Mapped Out Their ‘Behind The Candelabra’ Love Scenes Like Football Plays

Matt Damon says Michael Douglas is a “wonderful” kisser. He also tells Playboy magazine that he and the veteran actor strategized their onscreen make-out sessions for Steven Soderbergh’ s Liberace movie for HBO, Behind The Candelabra , “like a football plan,” which scarily brings to mind John Madden and Al Michaels cavorting in Speedos while diagramming a play-action pass.  The Promised Land actor tells interviewer Stephen Rebello that he usually says no to nude scenes, “but I just did a lot of it playing the long-term partner of Liberace, Scott Thorson in Behind the Candelabra .”  He took the plunge, he explains, because Soderbergh, who directed Damon on the Oceans films and The Informant! was behind the camera and the scenes in question were “tastefully done.” And, really, who could resist being held firmly in the masculine arms of the silver-maned actor who played Gordon Gekko ? Damon, who plays the much younger lover of the flamboyant piano showman — the Norman Jean Roy photograph above, which appeared in Vanity Fair, shows them in character — says the movie will make some people uncomfortable because “you’re witnessing something really intimate you would normally see with a man and a woman, but instead it’s two men”. He, on the other hand, found the dynamic “thrilling” even though some of the more intimate scenes weren’t “the most natural thing in the world to do, though. Like, for one scene, I had to come out of a pool, go over to Michael, straddle him on a chaise longue and start kissing him. And throughout the script, it’s not like I kiss him just once. We drew it up like a football plan.” At least he didn’t make a pitcher/catcher reference. Damon goes on to say that he once asked the late Heath Ledger  how he managed the scene with Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain where to two men hungrily suck face.  Ledger’s response: “Well, mate, I drank half a case of beer in my trailer.”  Damon add that when he laughed at that response, Ledger told him: “No, I’m serious. I needed to just go for it. If you can’t do that, you’re not making the movie.” The conversation leads Rebello to ask Damon what it was like “when you and Ben Affleck were constantly asked if you were gay, back when you were starting your careers” “I never denied those rumors because I was offended and didn’t want to offend my friends who were gay—as if being gay were some kind of fucking disease,” Damon responds. “It put me in a weird position in that sense. The whole thing was just gross.” [ Playboy ] Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter.  Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Take Our Breath Away…Please! The Top 5 ‘Top Gun’ Scenes We Can’t Wait To See In 3D

Oh, Top Gun . The Sullivan to Rambo ‘s Gilbert, it cemented pop-culture love for Reagan’s aggressive foreign policy , established the late lamented Tony Scott as a successful director, and catapulted Tom Cruise to A-list status, where he has remained ever since. Now, 26 years after its initial theatrical run, Top Gun ‘s barely stifled masculine angst and jingoistic pro-military message (wait, isn’t that the same thing?) feel more relevant than they did in 1986. (I blame Dr Pepper Ten for that.) What the world clearly needs is a chance to experience the film’s many delights with fresh eyes. And now we can, as Top Gun is getting an IMAX re-release in glorious, unintentionally homoerotic 3D two weeks before the February 19 release of the two-disc Blu-Ray set. Gird your loins everyone, because at the risk of writing this thing off sight unseen, 2D films converted to 3D almost always look terrible. It’s particularly bad when the movie wasn’t filmed in a way that really benefits the 3D experience. Top Gun is action-packed, but it’s basically a drama with fast jets every 10 minutes or so. Maverick’s character arc — that would be Cruise — involves him getting past the guilt of causing his friend’s death, falling in love, and coming to terms with the legacy of his dead father. Although 3D might benefit the dogfights, will we really be better off seeing a sort of passionate, blue-lit love scene unfold as if we’d stumbled into the very bedroom where it took place? Of course we will! And personally, I can’t wait to see these other choice moments popping off the screen: 1. Tom Cruise flipping the bird at a Russian jet before performing a death-defying maneuver so he can escort a panic-stricken fellow pilot back to their aircraft carrier. Moral of the story: Maverick is a loose cannon, but he gets the job done. 2. The touching teacher-student romance between Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise, which includes sex and sexy motorcycle riding. 3. Anthony “Goose” Edwards’ tragic death as he’s rammed face-first into a cockpit window.

Batman Cameo Rumors Bring Cheshire Smile To Christopher Nolan’s Face At Hugh Jackman Salute

Hugh Jackman is way more emo than I thought. But I’ll get to that in a moment.  Among the filmmakers who turned up to praise the  Les Misérables   star at the Museum of the Moving Image’s salute to Jackman in lower Manhattan on Tuesday night was The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan who grew an enormous Cheshire-Cat grin when I asked him if the Superman reboot he is producing, Man of Steel , would see a cameo by Joseph Gordon-Levitt , or any actor, as Batman, and if he had any objections to a cameo as a continuity move to tie the Supes movie to the 2015  Justice League movie.   “I can’t talk about that.  You know that,” Nolan said cheerily. I didn’t know that, actually, but now that I do, I feel compelled to point out that, despite the frustratingly inconclusive nature of his answer, it’s not a ‘No.’  Yes, JG-L’s camp shot down the speculation as “entirely false” back in November, but if the idea had been ruled out, wouldn’t Nolan be saying something along those lines, too, so that the fan boys could move on? You know how angry they can get when their casting hopes and dreams are suddenly deflated after being allowed to build for months. The impish smile on Nolan’s face as he issued that no comment also heightened my optimism, especially in the wake of the powerful Man of Steel trailer that’s now burning up the Internet. Zack Snyder’s take on Superman clearly aspires to have the kind of psychological heft and dark undertones that made The Dark Knight trilogy so satisfying. If the movie attains or even approaches those standards, a JG-L Batman cameo  would not dishonor Nolan’s work and it would set the bar high for Justice League . No pressure, Warner Bros. Nolan, Hathaway, Weisz Honor Jackman At Museum of The Moving Image Fete Getting back to Jackman, who’s on the fast-track to a Best Actor Oscar nomination , Nolan had much more to say about  the actor, who he directed along with Christian Bale in The Prestige .  The filmmaker told guests at the Museum of the Moving Image fete that though “ruthless” is not a word usually associated with Jackman, The Wolverine star is indeed “ruthless creatively” and a performer “driven by intense ambition.”  The director also said that he looked forward to working with Jackman again, “probably not on a musical though,” despite Jackman’s urging him to direct one. Also praising Jackman were his wife, actress Deborra-Lee Furness, his  X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-star Liev Schreiber , director Mike Nichols, former Saturday Night Live cast member Rachel Dratch , who got big laughs mocking Jackman’s Australian dialect and  two of his Les Misérables  co-stars Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne . In an effusive, rambling speech, Hathaway called Jackman “deep as the sea.” Rachel Weisz offered up an even more intriguing description of the actor, calling him an “incredible cocktail of light and dark.”  She also told the most revealing story of the night:  During the filming of The Fountain , which was directed by her ex-husband Darren Aronofsky , Weisz said that Jackman gave himself so completely to a scene in which his character realizes he’s going to die that “he sobbed for about half an hour after the cameras stopped” while Weisz comforted him.  “He’d gone to the deepest, darkest place a person can go,” she said. “And he wasn’t faking it.” Jackman kept his speech much lighter saying that his Christmas gift wish list was a simple one.   All he wanted, he said, was “a movie with me starring in it to open on Christmas Day.” Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Angry Birds Confirmed To Swoop Down In 2016

Here come the Birds! And they’ll be CG-animated, in 3-D and – angry ? The video game franchise creator Rovio Entertainment is tapping Despicable Me producer John Cohen to produce a planned Angry Birds movie, with former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel on board as executive producer. Rovio will finance the pic, which is set for Summer 2016. John Cohen produced Illumination Entertainment/Universal Pictures’ Despicable Me in 2010 with Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud directing, who also took the helm for the 2010 short Despicable Me Presents: Minion Madness . Cohen also worked with Pierre Coffin in the first animated short he produced, Banana . Could the pair or some combination thereof be ready to take flight for Angry Birds ? 2010’s Despicable Me revolved around a criminal mastermind who uses three orphan girls to hatch his scheme, but is moved by their profound love. Could this signal a less pissed off flock four years from now? “Rovio will produce and finance the movie outside the studio system and retain full creative control while creating innovative entertainment at the highest level of quality,” the company said, adding that it is taking a cue from David Maisel’s direction he ushered in at Marvel. “I’m so excited and honored to be working on this film with Mikael, David, and Rovio’s incredibly talented game developers and artists,” said Cohen via Rovio’s website . “From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I’ve personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie.” The movie will mark Rovio Entertainment’s first move into feature films, though fans are already familiar with those Angry Birds through Rovio’s games, books, consumer products and animation. Since they first left the nest in 2009, they have been downloaded over 1 billion times across platforms. Most recently, Angry Birds Star Wars ascended to the stratosphere of the US iPhone charts after two-and-a-half hours in release. Prior to Illumination, Cohen was VP of Production at Twentieth Century Fox Animation. What do you think a John Cohen-produced Angry Birds has in store?

Hayden Panettiere and Scotty McKnight Are Over!

It looks like the Jets season isn’t the only thing Scotty McKnight has to be depressed about. Sources reveal that McKnight and Hayden Panettiere have called it quits .  The duo supposedly split amicably a few weeks ago. After all, the pair looked happy when they attended the American Music Awards just last month.  A source told TMZ that, “they will probably be back together sometimes down the road.” In the meantime, we suppose Hayden will just continue being hot on Nashville , while the Jets will continue to underachieve and look not so hot in the AFC East. Kristen Stewart: Nude On the Road Scene Not "Brave"

Kristen Stewart describes her nude scene in On The Road not as “brave” as some call it, but merely as what was required of her as an actress and for the role. “I hate when people go, ‘Oh, wow, great performance. So brave,'” she told The Huffington Post . Kristen Stewart On the Road Clips “Oh, because I’m naked? That’s very annoying. But at the same time, if that’s what they’re focusing on , then On the Road probably isn’t for them anyway.” The 22-year-old said the occasional nudity of teenage bride Marylou in the movie adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s classic novel is not the main takeaway from the film. Stewart, having read the 1957 book, connected with it and wanted to do the role justice. “This book celebrates being alive and it celebrates being human, and if you want to cover up and deny any aspect of that, you are denying the spirit of the book,” she said. If it means feeling rewarded by a project, then getting nude and offering two guys hand relief at the same time, as she does in one memorable clip, is nothing for her. “I need to be so rocked by something, so moved by something that the idea of letting it down or ruining it is painful, and that’s what gets you through the shoot,” she said. “If you start considering what people are going to think, you’ll never make a movie.”

Tom Cruise’s ‘Oblivion’ Is Nothing Like Wall-E, We Assume They Will Insist

Yesterday, the first trailer for Tom Cruise ‘s upcoming science fiction film Oblivion was released online, and if you’re anything like us (and the rest of the internet), you’ll immediately note that it has absolutely nothing whatsoever in common with Wall-E . No sir, nothing at all. Oblivion follows Cruise’s Jack Harper (his second Jack-namedm character in a row? Uh oh, typecasting), a maintenance man assigned to clean up planet earth in the aftermath of some kind of terrible apocalyptic event. Jack apparently spends his days wallowing through the nostalgic remains of human civilization. No doubt he’ll end up singing ‘Hello Dolly’ right after the little speech about the Super Bowl he gives in the trailer. His mission is less than a fortnight away from completion when a beautiful – and yes, the official description uses the word “attractive” – stranger crash lands on Earth, drawing Jack into a conspiracy that pits him against the authority he serves, and a group of Leather fetishists led by noted kindness-and-gravitas dispenser Morgan Freeman. Oblivion is helmed by Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, which is about as neutral an indication of the movie’s overall quality as you can get. I’m guessing it’ll be yet another Logan’s Run ripoff, with the same kind of ridiculous ‘everything’s better and the revolution worked in like 5 minutes’ outcome, minus Michael York’s lithe frame and blond locks. Originally planned for June, 2013, it’s been moved up to April 12, 2013. Until then, Internet: please get to work on the recut Oblivion -as- Wall-E trailer the world desperately needs.

Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Gets Personal With ‘Sound City’

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl is heading to the Sundance Film Festival next month with his directorial debut Sound City and he’s wasting no time getting the pic out there. The film’s website is now taking pre-orders for the documentary that will be released via HD digital download and stream February 1st. It will also be released theatrically February 1. Sound City is the brainchild of Grohl who conceived the story after purchasing a custom-built 8028 recording console from Sound City Studios last year. The board was built in 1972 and considered to be a “crown jewel of analog recording equipment,” having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns and Roses, Fear, Grohl’s former band, Nirvana as well as Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica and others. Grohl’s personal connection to Sound City began with the 1991 recording of Nirvana’s breakthrough album, “Nevermind”. Selling over 30 million copies worldwide. Grohl is getting personal with the feature, sending customers who pre-buy Sound City for $10 a letter, which follows: Hey there…. Thanks for scraping up your hard earned dough and buying the movie direct from our site! We’re stoked! Hope you love it as much as we do…. Ummm………Holy shit! I made a movie! I started this project a little over a year ago with ONE of my good old friends (Jim Rota from the band Fireball Ministry). That’s right….just me, my drinking buddy, and a crazy idea that we should tell the story of a studio we had loved hanging around for years, and our heartbreak to see it close. It soon blossomed into something truly epic! I don’t think either of us ever imagined our little project would become what it is now. Like all the best things in life, it just…….happened. From day one, it was the most incredible experience of my life. I swear. Sitting down with Neil Young talking about recording guitars, John Fogerty telling me about the day he decided to become a musician, Stevie Nicks telling me the story of how she joined Fleetwood Mac, Trent Reznor schooling me on the world of computers and digital technology, etc etc etc…..can you imagine? All I had to do was listen…I am the luckiest man on earth. And, being a completely independent film, no one told us how or what to do! Me and my crew of under 20 people did it OUR way. It was like a keg party with a camera. WE got to tell the story of a place we all held so dear. WE wanted to do it justice. And I think we did. But, SOUND CITY is only part of the story….. What is it that happens when 4 people turn on, plug in, and really play that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up? What is it about those moments when you hear something and it immediately puts its hooks in you, and you feel…..understood? What is it that will inspire the next generation of kids wanna do what I did when I was a little punk growing up in Springfield, Virginia? That feeling like, “Wait……I can do this too….. That’s what I’m talking about. That human connection. That human feel. That human sound…that isn’t perfect…but it’s sooooo good. I really feel like SOUND CITY is my life’s most important work. I hope you do too. Psyched that you get to see it! Show it to your friends! Get together, start a band, sound like shit, and change the world. GO! Thank you, thank you, thank you………Dave [ Sources: Sound City , THR ]
