Hail Mecha Hitler! 5 Reasons To Be Excited About Roger Avary’s ‘Wolfenstein’ Movie

Samuel Hadida is taking on the Wolfenstein   video-game franchise. Considering that his Resident Evil movies made more than $500 million, that’s big news.  If you didn’t spend the early ’90s introducing Nazis to bullets, Wolfenstein 3D is the grandaddy of all great first person shooters. If you’ve ever pointed a gun at a bad guy, you owe Wolfenstein royalties. The game came out a year before the similarly influential  Doom , was made by the same company (id Software), and, thanks to the involvement of Oscar-winning Pulp Fiction co-screenwriter Roger Avary , who will write and direct, the movie should be much better. Reports of  a Wolfenstein  adaptation have been kicking around since 2002 when trade reports of video-game movies being developed were more plentiful than TSA pat-downs. Like so many of those projects, however, the film did not materialize.  In 2007, news of Avary’s involvement with the film broke, although his arrest and subsequent imprisonment on vehicular manslaughter charges the following year put both the project and its director out of the public eye.  But now they’re back, and there is reason to hope. Five of them, actually. 1. The Players The press release for the latest incarnation of Wolfenstein   promised a blend between Inglourious Basterds and Captain America , and that’s not just an intern throwing out the only Nazi movies he could remember. Avary’s collaboration with Quentin Tarantino  won the pair Oscars for their Pulp Fiction script.  He also directed the neo-noir bank-heist classic  Killing Zoe . If you’ve got a hero whose only personality trait is “shooting people,” which Castle Wolfenstein does, Avary is the right man to give the guy character and dialogue. He also has a long history of working with Samuel Hadida, who produced Killing Zoe. They worked together on Silent Hill   and Rules of Attraction as well. Hadida’s video-game credentials also include producing three of the Resident Evil movies, the most profitable video game movie franchise out there, as well as one with fairly high production values. Which means Castle Wolfenstein won’t be another Uwe Boll -style low budget insult. 2. The Plot Many saw the  Doom  movie as a disaster because it messed with the plot. It’s a fair charge because Doom , the video game, is essentially “Doomguy versus the demons of hell” and Doom , the movie, had neither.  The script was fun, and had a great twist, but calling it The Rock And A Gun  would have been more accurate. It would also have been a better plot than most of his other movies. The plot of Wolfenstein has always been “B. J. Blazkowicz shoots Nazis”. Even his name sounds like an explosion. The simplicity of the game should actually benefit the movie. Avary can be as innovative and provocative as he likes with the plot and still easily integrate it with the fundamentals of the franchise. 3. The Nazis As villains, Nazis are almost as tired as zombies. They’ve been trudging around the cinema screens for even longer, and are popular for the same reason: you can do anything to them without fear of political repercussion. (Especially when you combine them, as in Dead Snow .) The 2001 game reboot, Return to Castle Wolfenstein , rejuvenated the franchise with the awesome idea of the SS Paranormal Division, an enhancement expanded on in the 2009 sequel Wolfenstein . That’s right, psychic Nazis! This explained the undead mutants of earlier games and allowed the introduction of all  kinds of new monsters and events. It’s also an aspect of the game that should have special effects coordinators salivating. 4. No Baggage Wolfenstein is the perfect video game franchise for a Hollywood scriptwriter. The game is famous, but it doesn’t have a complicated canon to get in the way of the storytelling.  The franchise has also never suffered from the sequelitis that has, for instance, bedeviled  Resident Evil . There’s no massive cast, no reality-flouting retroactive continuity and no convoluted twists and turns. Instead, you’ve got a good guy, bad guys, explosions, and… 5. Mecha Hitler  The greatest game villain of all time, and we’ll get to see it come to life on the big screen via big-budget, special-effects. Mecha Hitler is Castle Wolfenstein ‘s secret weapon. In addition to being an armored cyborg and probably a clone, it (he?) is a viral advertising bonanza. Luke McKinney loves the real world, but only because it has movies and video games in it. Kristen Stewart Lashes Out at Reporter: You Know Nothing!

When Kristen Stewart was asked about Robert Pattinson on The Today Show this week, she tried to laugh and brush the question off. It was awkward, but mostly calm and successful. But the stress of the situation is clearly getting to the actress, as evidenced by another interview she gave this week to The Los Angeles Times . Alongside Stephenie Meyer, Stewart went into depth about Breaking Dawn Part 2 and The Twilight Saga in general, but somewhat lost her cool when the topic of her personal life was addressed. “People are just going to write the movie version of your life and consume it the way they please. I get the inclination to be entertained by that as well, so go for it. Have at it. Take it. Take it,” Stewart told the reporter. “But you knew nothing about my relationship before. You know less now. How could you?” On Thursday, the topic was also brought up with Pattinson during a chat with Savannah Guthrie. How did the handsome actor reply? In a coy, cool manner, of course. He’s very good at that.

Bond Girl To Bad Girl: ‘Skyfall’ Siren Bérénice Marlohe Hints She’s Going Gangster For Next Film

Bérénice Marlohe moves through Skyfall with the beauty and grace of a panther, and  there’s a reason for that. In an interview with Movieline , the 33-year-old French-Chinese-Cambodian actress, who plays  the femme fatale Sévérine in Skyfall ,  says she based her character, in part, on a mythical creature that was part-snake, part-dragon and part-jungle cat. Figuratively speaking, of course.  Like all actresses who share screen and bedroom time with 007, Marlohe is beautiful in an exotic and ethereal way,  but, as the conversation below suggests, she would rather be celebrated for playing a bad girl than a Bond Girl . Movieline: What is the essence and significance of being a Bond Girl for you?  Marlohe: Honestly,  I never took into consideration this title ‘Bond Girl’ while creating my character, because, it’s a beautiful title, but it’s so abstract. You can’t start there. When I think Bond girl, I see women in bathing suits. That is not enough. Also, I was so focused on creating a real human being — but on a surreal level — that I totally forgot about the Bond Girl stuff. Perhaps five years from now, when I see the movie again, I’ll think, Ah, yes, I am in the Bond movie, so I am a a Bond girl . But it was very far from me when I making the movie. You’ve said that your performance as  Sévérine in Skyfall was inspired by music. What was on your playlist?  Because I did a lot of piano from 10 to 18 years old, I feel a strong connection with music, whether it is classical, like Mozart’s Requiem , or rock or pop. It’s so powerful. You connect directly with the whole universe.  So, I listen to music a lot on sets because, it puts me right away into a mood and world that the scene requires. For this movie, I used a lot of the music from 300  because it gave me that feeling of power and animal strength. I listened a lot to Shirley Bassey, who I discovered on YouTube while I was researching the part.  She’s so powerful and glamorous, and there is a lot of light in her being and her voice. Grace Jones, too. What a voice.  I feel connected to these women, and this gives me some quality of being present and full of strength. I used a lot of heavy metal stuff, too — Rage Against the Machine, which I love. You’re listening to this music while you’re rehearsing? Yeah, while building the character and most of all on set to stay focused and stay in my imaginary sphere. Right before a scene, music inspires me and enables me to hit certain feelings, emotions. You’ve also said that you took some inspiration from the mythical creature the Chimera, which also happens to be the name of the yacht on which you and James Bond travel  to meet Silva. Yes.  Actually, I didn’t know what a Chimera was until I read the script. I found this word,  and I was curious. I looked it up on the Internet, and I saw the pictures of this mythical animal with three heads. For me, it was a great starting point because it is part-dragon, part-snake and part-panther.  It’s not part-panther actually, but that’s how I imagined it, and it helped me connect with my instinct, my animality. Sévérine is complex.  She does have a panther-like sexiness. She has snaky qualities, too, and yet, she’s also very fearful. You do an impressive job of communicating all of these qualities and emotions in a fairly short time.  Is that from channeling the Chimera?  Absolutely. PHOTO GALLERY: Meet ‘Skyfall’ Siren Bérénice Marlohe, Your New Bond Girl Where does the fear come from? The fear. Ahhh. (Laughs)  Well, I had to…just go very far in my imagination and connect to my inside world. It’s a whole mix of so much stuff. What’s next for you? I’m very excited because I have two independent movies, English-American collaborations.  The first one is called Spitfire. My big fantasy as an actress for a long long time was to have one of those amazing roles that usually you see going to male actors. For instance, Gary Oldman in Leon: The Professional , or the one I prefer, Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark  Knight .  These are roles that fascinate me, so finally I will have this ability to create something like that.  I’m excited about that. What type of character do you play?  Did you see Snatch?   You have bad guys, but also you have a bit of comedy because you see all of their defects. So it’s a mix of comedy and this quality of being a bit crazy.  I always wanted to play a mafia chief or a role like that because it gives you a lot of freedom to create something funny. This will be the kind of role you usually see going to a guy. This excites me a lot as a woman. So, you play a gangster? Ah, maybe! Maybe. Did you see Lena Headey in Dredd 3D ?  No. You should see it . She plays a brutal crime boss called Ma-Ma.  Oh yeah? She will inspire you. There is also Pan , which will be a reinterpretation of Peter Pan . It will be directed by Ben Hibon, who did Mirror Mirror with Julia Roberts. It’s a beautiful universe. Are you Wendy? No, but it will be with Terence Stamp. He’s one of my favorite actors. I love how in his eyes you see so much majesty and authenticity. So, I look forward to being in that movie. New ‘Les Miserables’ Trailer: Will Jackman, Crowe, Hathaway Sing Their Way To Oscar?

I’ll admit I was a bit iffy on this whole live singing concept in Tom Hooper’s epic Les Miserables film adaptation… until now. The new international trailer swells with emotion as everyone from Hugh Jackman to Anne Hathaway to Amanda Seyfried , Russell Crowe , and Eddie Redmayne warble Claude-Michel Schönberg’s iconic tunes like their Oscar hopes depended on it. Which they do. Hathaway’s got the showy role in Fantine, whose “I Dreamed A Dream” was one of the first bits to leak onto the internet months back. Thank goodness for the new trailer, which shows that the rest of the ensemble is bringing their singing game to the streets of 19th century France, too. We’ve got Jackman as Valjean, Crowe as Javert, Seyfried as Cosette, all of whom have been known to flex their vocal chords from time to time. Redmayne, who starred most recently in My Week With Marilyn and plays Marius, has yet to show off his pipes but apparently was a chorister at Eton College – not too shabby. Then there’s Samantha Barks as Eponine, who’ll probably blow everyone else in the cast away seeing as she’s an actual West End star. (Remember when we thought Taylor Swift had the role in the bag? Oh, Internet .) In any case, hope! Optimism! I know Les Mis is already going to steal all the Christmas movie-going dollars, but now I’m more convinced it’ll be a repeat-view Oscar contender and not just a must-see for Broadway nuts. Color me a believer. Read more on Les Miserables . Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

India.Arie Goes In On “Ridiculous” Blackface/Fake Nose Images Of Zoe Saldana, Says “Viola Davis Should Be Playing Nina Simone!”

The controversy over Zoe Saldana being cast as Nina Simone continues to rage on and this time it’s India.Arie speaking about the role many feel she should have played! Via NinaSimone.com WHAT I FEEL ABOUT THE NINA SIMONE MOVIE: People have been asking me for weeks, months, years about a Nina Simone movie, when I heard about Zoe Saldana being cast I reserved judgement, you NEVER know what People are MEANT to do. SO TODAY I saw the images of Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone… AND I THINK THEY ARE RIDICULOUS! Yes there should be a movie made, and YES they should have chosen someone who LOOKS like Nina Simone, ESPECIALLY since her RACE played such a PIVOTAL role in WHO, WHAT and WHY, she was. THAT ASIDE for a second, this just looks WEIRD, it looks like a person in Black(er) face with a fake nose … REALLY?!!!! DOES NOT THE ONE NINA SIMONE’S LEGACY DESERVE BETTER THAN THIS? If they were going to pick a person who looks NOTHING like Nina Simone … why not her daughter Simone *shrug* just saying … As hard as Nina had to fight for what she wanted BECAUSE she was black and looked the way she did … THIS looks like a parody. If it has to be FORCED this hard something’s not right! I am VERY opinionated about music, I can dissect VOCALS ALL DAY, I don’t KNOW ACTING LIKE THAT! But I trust that through her obvious admiration of Nina, that Zoe Saldana can pull off the portrayal ENERGETICALLY … But these images … just make me feel … SAD. Not because I want to play Nina Simone but because IT FEELS OUT OF PLACE WITH WHAT NINA SIMONE MEANS IN AN AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORICAL CONTEXT!!!! (yes I yelled just now – I am emotional about OTHER things today, and I’m riding the wave of that, but this IS WHAT I FEEL…) I have always been OPEN to playing Nina, but I never saw its as my RIGHT! I am clearly Nina Simone’s Physical Heir Apparent, THAT doesn’t mean I SHOULD play her, its been tossed around A LOT, for a LONG TIME. I back down because I feel her legacy deserves better than a FIRST TIME MOVIE ACTRESS, I’m like that about my heroes. If I ever FELT I was truly CALLED to play her, I would. And maybe Zoe Saldana REALLY is BEING CALLED SPIRITUALLY TO PLAY THIS ROLE … But I DO NOT LIKE these PICTURES. AT ALL. SEEING Nina Simone changed my life, when I was 17 My cousin and I tried to call her … Whole NOTHER story …. I will END this by saying I think VIOLA DAVIS should be playing Nina Simone Well dayuuuuuum. India went in! Do you agree with her that Viola Davis is the right person for the part? Do you think she was too easy on Zoe Saldana for accepting the role? Discuss! WENN/Retna/FameFlynetPictures
