REVIEW: Ruby Sparks Blows Up Manic Pixie Dream Girl Myth

The title character of  Ruby Sparks is a 26-year-old painter from Dayton, Ohio played by Zoe Kazan, who also wrote the film’s screenplay, She has bangs and wears brightly colored tights. Her first crushes were on John Lennon and Humphrey Bogart. She loves to cook, can’t drive and doesn’t own a computer. Her problems, as someone points out, are all of the “endearing” variety. She’s also entirely the invention of Calvin Weir-Fields (Paul Dano), a blocked author who wrote a hit novel at age 19 and 10 years later, has yet to follow it up. Living a solitary life in Los Angeles, he’s advised by his shrink Dr. Rosenthal (Elliott Gould) to write about meeting someone while out walking his dog, Scotty. Ruby first appears to Calvin in his sleep, and soon he’s fleshing her character out on his typewriter. For the first time in ages, words come to him easily as he tells the story of how his literal dream girl meets and ends up with a guy who’s a lot like him. Directed by  Little Miss Sunshine ‘s team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris,  Ruby Sparks isn’t the exercise in stevia-dusted whimsy that it sounds like, especially once a flesh-and-blood Ruby suddenly materializes — exactly as Calvin wrote her — with no awareness that she began as a fictional literary character. This touch of movie magic is actually a way for the filmmakers to tartly examine the cinematic trope of the manic pixie dream girl and the larger problems inherent in searching for someone who’s perfect for you. Ruby is perfect for Calvin because he wrote her to be that way.  She’s not your stereotypical pneumatic blond lust object because while sex is certainly part of the relationship Calvin is looking for, control and security are more important. She’s adorable but vulnerable because she’s been treated badly. She’s eager to please, and though Calvin is nothing like the other men she’s dated, she falls in love with him instantly and even promises him, “I will never get sick of you.” As Calvin’s older, married brother Harry (Chris Messina) points out when reading his sibling’s description of Ruby before she ever manages her transition into the physical world, “you haven’t written a person, you’ve written a girl.” And Kazan has written a portrait of a self-pitying, self-protective creative type that becomes so progressively biting that the film’s hopeful epilogue doesn’t quite fly. We learn more about Calvin as he initially freaks out about Ruby’s presence — he thinks he’s going nuts until he realizes other people can see her — but then gratefully comes to accept it. In ebullient montages, the pair goes to an arcade and out dancing. They settle into a life together. Calvin and his brother figure out early on that Ruby is a malleable creation. Calvin can dictate his dream girl’s behavior by continuing to write about her. At first, he vows not to play God and locks up his work in a drawer, but Ruby starts to chafe at being Calvin’s sole companion and at being expected to support his self-centered behavior. His treatment of Ruby grows crueler and as we meet his ex-girlfriend Lila ( True Blood ‘s Deborah Ann Woll) and realize that his account of their breakup is seriously slanted. Ruby starts building a life away from Calvin, and soon he’s pulling out paper and trying to fix her problems with him (instead of himself). Dayton and Faris have created a very grounded L.A. for this not-so-grounded story. They make notable use of the all-white bungalow in which Calvin spends most of his days sitting by the backyard pool . Dano is very good at morphing from the shaggy, appealing literary genius he appears to be at the film’s outset into a troubled, not-so-nice guy who comes sharply into focus at film’s end. After all, Ruby Sparks  is  really about Calvin. Ruby is simply a mirror — which is why the ending strikes the only real false note of the movie. Calvin gets a dose of much-needed self-awareness and  what feels like the wrong sort of chance at redemption. As a whole, however, Ruby Sparks lands like a punch.  It’s a smart counter-jab to the many movies out there that put forth the myth that the world is full of quirky angels in ballet flats who are just waiting for some morose protagonist to come along in need of their love.  It’s as much of a fantasy as Kelly LeBrock emerging from a teenager’s PC. Real people have problems that can’t be dismissed with a sweeping sentence on a page — and real relationships involve compromise and dealing with those problems, not holding out for someone who indulges your every foible and asks nothing in return. Memo to Warner: Delay Gangster Squad, Don’t Cut It

To paraphrase Clemenza from The Godfather : Move the picture. Keep the scene. Deadline Hollywood reported that Warner Bros. has decided to push the release date of Gangster Squad to January 11, 2013. The schedule shuffle took place as a result of the tragic mass shooting at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colo. As you’re probably well aware by now, there’s a pivotal scene in the Ruben Fleischer-directed movie in which mobsters burst through a movie screen to spray a crowd of movie goers with machine-gun fire. Warner, which is part of a public company, is understandably postponing the release date to avoid appearing insensitive to the Colorado tragedy, especially given the eerie similarity between the Gangster Squad scene and what happened in Aurora. It’s a smart move, and now that the studio is putting some distance between Aurora and Gangster Squad , I think it should give serious consideration to leaving the theater scene intact. (As Deadline reported, plans are to substitute another murder spree that takes place in a different setting.) As others have pointed out, Fleischman’s movie was completed before the shooting in Aurora took place.  (The studio was already reportedly screening the film.) Admittedly, it’s a sensitive and unfortunate situation.  &mdash ; but it’s a situation that should be solved with the passage of time, not the alteration of a filmmaker’s work. Consider the point made by one Movieline reader when I  wrote on Tuesday that the movie’s release would probably be delayed until next year. In the comments section, the reader, who goes by the handle “Elkabong,” noted that “Around 300 Americans were killed in automobiles last month,” adding:  “I assume that Warner is going to cut out any future scenes which involve people driving cars.” A Warner spokeswoman confirmed that Gangster Squad would not be released on Sept. 7 but said that no new date had been set. Stay tuned. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter .  Follow Movieline on Twitter . Watch the video on YouTube.

Kristen Stewart is Cheating Trash who Fucks Her Director of the Day

These people are actors and thus you shouldn’t care about their lives. They are just pawns who get paid a lot of money from executives to play out storie that our pathetic lives can relate to….but people always carry it over to the person behind the character they like on TV or in the movie, and instead of relating to a broken down stripper than character plays, they start relating to the broken down actor who was probably molested by her father but more importantly probably sucked a lot of dick to get to the height of fame she is at, with her questionable looks and talent. The reality is that there are billions of dollars at stake in every movie she does, the Robert Pattison, Kristen Stewart relationship….contrived to make Twilight more believable…fake couples happen….it was up on some Zac Effron and Vanessa Hudgens, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, pretty much every celebrity relationship level of authenticity and anyone who thinks otherwise is just drinking the fucking marketing Kool Aid….and is a depressiing fucking loser. Even these picture are probably to sell tickets to Snow White, or whatever the movie they met on, and the truth is unless it is an actual sex tape, who fucking cares what is being put in her vagina, who fucking cares about scandals involving these people, real or fake…who cares about Kristen Stewart and her ugly fucking face….oh right….72 percent of AMerica. What a fucking joke. This is probably more important and a bigger conversation today than any other subject…this is the story of the day…Kristen Steward cheated on Robert Pattison even though we have no idea what the dynamic of her relationship with Robert Pattison or this Director of one of her movies is….especially since they are all fucking actors trying to get people into the movies…. and caring about such nonsesne fucking depresses me. We are all fucking doomed…. Remember everyone….people fuck or at least try to….everyday….only to be rejected by all the hot ones and forced to marry an obese one so that I am never alone….and now have to pay for sex that gets me off….at least some people…

Mystery Men On Blu-ray: The Anti-Dark Knight Rises?

A caped crusader. A city wiped clean of criminals. A madman with a doomsday device who terrorizes the populace until average citizen heroes step forward to help save the day. Batman? Nope! On the heels of The Dark Knight Rises , Movieline takes a look back at 1999’s Mystery Men , new to Blu-ray, in the latest installment of Inessential Essentials . The film: Mystery Men (1999) Why It’s an Inessential Essential: Based on characters by comics creator Bob Burden, Mystery Men is an anomalously charming and amiably goofy superhero film. The film is very much a product of the creative chaos that ensued after Hollywood executives realized comic book properties like Batman could make a mint at the box office. But with many more duds than hits on their hands, execs were apparently clueless about what they should adapt and how to do it. It’s not only strange that a movie with characters as alienating-ly campy as the ones in Mystery Men ever got made — it’s even freakier to note that the film is actually pretty funny. So while mass audiences didn’t know what to make of the film when it was initially released, the film can now be enjoyed as a more than welcome antidote to the recent trend of self-serious but mostly drab superhero films. Mystery Men was co-produced by Dark Horse Comics publisher and creator Michael Richardson, the man responsible for turning such comic book properties as Tank Girl (1995) and The Mask (1994) into half-baked films. It was directed by Kinka Usher, making a big leap from being the assistant camera operator on such films as the 1987 Kato Kaelin vehicle Beach Fever (Usher would not go on to direct any other movies after Mystery Men , not even short films). Usher clearly directed the film in the style of the Joel Schumacher Batman movies; he makes frequent use of campy Dutch angles, crash zooms and first person POV shots, like the one where we see Ben Stiller being attacked by Geoffrey Rush’s character — from the perspective of Rush’s extended pinky. To call this film’s success as a comedy anomalous would be putting it very diplomatically. In the film, a group of wannabe superheroes that mostly don’t seem to have any real powers band together to fight the nefarious disco-obsessed Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush, who had just won an Oscar for Shine two years before Mystery Men was made). Now that Frankenstein has kidnapped the all-powerful Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear), the only people that can stop him are the then-unnamed group of heroes: Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller), a tantrum-throwing wimp who isn’t very strong; The Shoveler (William H. Macy), a middle-class father and a guy that fights crime with a shovel; and the Blue Raja (Hank Azaria), an adenoidal mama’s boy who pretends to be a British mystic and uses flatware as projectile weapons (mainly forks and spoons). To defeat Frankenstein, the team has to hire some new members, including the gaseous Spleen (Paul Reubens) and the haunted-bowling-ball-chucking Bowler (Janeane Garofalo). It’s a fittingly unusual line-up for a rather odd film. By today’s standards, Mystery Men is seriously dated. For starters, Smashmouth’s “Allstar” is used twice as a song cue. But it’s also often disarmingly eccentric, as in the scene where Tom Waits, who plays a mad scientist, shows off his arsenal of weird weapons (including the Blame Thrower), or the one where Wes Studi’s enigmatic, platitude-slinging hero The Sphinx trains the titular heroes (“To learn my teachings, I must first teach you how to learn”). All of the characters are also endearingly neurotic, like Invisible Boy (Kel Mitchell, of Keenan and Kel fame), a teenage loser who can only turn invisible when nobody else is looking at him, or Garofalo’s Bowler, a woman whose dead father nags her even from beyond the grave. Filmed on a reported $68 million budget, Mystery Men only grossed $33.4 million worldwide but went on to earn something of a cult status. How the Blu-Ray Makes the Case for the Movie: You can appreciate just how bizarre Mystery Men is just from watching the Spotlight on Location featurette, which makes it seem like the film’s production was pretty manic. For instance, Stiller reveals that the film’s cast were working with an improv-reliant script. “We’re always coming up with ideas, which is the fun thing about…” Stiller says, comically pausing to look around him and finishing his thought, ” not having a script.” Garofalo and Stiller both joke about the fact that they had little confidence in Usher. “I’m only doing this for the money,” she teases. “Kinka doesn’t know what the fuck he’s doin’. He hasn’t directed a movie before.” Even nice guy Greg Kinnear chimes in: “I describe [ Mystery Men ] as…a cartoon gone horribly, horribly wrong.” But Usher got results; even the film’s deleted scenes, like the one where Waits macks on a blue-haired retiree by telling her that he’s actually a doctor, are pretty funny. Other Trivia: In a rather thoughtful special feature, Burden shares a detailed history of his original comic book characters through interviews conducted before the film’s release. It’s especially funny to note that the character of the Shoveler was originally armed with King Arthur’s singing shovel, which was sentient and talked in “Middle English.” Also, apparently, Danny DeVito was supposed to not only direct the film at one point but play the Shoveler, too. Burden is also quoted in a Comics Buyer’s Guide interview as saying that he didn’t write the characters with modern actors in mind. “Originally, as I envisioned them, the Mystery Men were characters like Ernest Borgnine and Vic Tayback — all Mike Ditka-type guys. The only current star I could’ve seen as a Mystery Man would’ve been Steve Buscemi from Fargo .” Previously: Reconsidering Christopher Nolan’s Insomnia Simon Abrams is a NY-based freelance film critic whose work has been featured in outlets like The Village Voice, Time Out New York, Vulture and Esquire. Additionally, some people like his writing, which he collects at Extended Cut .

The Actors Who Rose in The Dark Knight Rises–and Those Who Did Not (Hint: One of Them Is French)

Rare is the movie in which every cast member performs at the same level–unless maybe you’re talking about the uniformly jaw-dropping performances of everyone in “Witless Protection.” So, here at Movieline, we’d like to begin a tradition of ranking performances within movies–a sort of intramural Oscars, if you will–and asking you to weigh in with your own.  We’ll introduce polling and a catchy title soon enough, but we just had to start with The Dark Knight Rises –a movie in which the performances range from sublime (Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to wince-inducing (Marion Cotillard). See how your favorite–or least favorite–character rates below, and then leave your own ranking in the comments section. 1. Tom Hardy:  Yes, comic-book villains are usually way more interesting than the heroes who inevitably vanquish them, but thanks to a considerable piece of hardware strapped to his face, Hardy had a tougher  acting job than the late Heath Ledger did when he played the Joker.  Okay, the Vader-ish voicebox torqued up the creep factor (and made his dialogue hard to understand at times), but Hardy left his pretty-boy aura in his trailer and gave a performance—essentially using his eyes and body language—that was pure, cold malevolence.  Darth gave us nightmares when we were kids, but it’s Bane who’ll wake us in a cold sweat for years to come. 2. Anne Hathaway: Hathaway’s tough, tender–and mouthy–performance as Catwoman erased once and for all the bad taste that lingered in our craw after her loopy Oscars-hosting performance. We knew she could act, but boy does she act in TDKR. And she looks totally hot in her costume, especially while draped over the Batpod.  Spin her off into her own film and she’ll make us forget Halle Berry’s turn as Catwoman, too 3. Joseph Gordon-Levitt:  Gordon-Levitt made the most of a one-note role. His orphan speech to Bruce Wayne could have been as gloppy as bad macaroni and cheese, but he put some sharp Gruyere into it.  And we won’t spoil the picture entirely, but let’s just say the boy could carry his own superhero movie. 4. Ben Mendelsohn: Yes, Ben Mendelsohn. Although his onscreen time, as the construction magnate Daggett, is relatively brief, Mendelsohn is memorable–and, judging from the few narcissistic, weasel-thin corporate titans we’ve met in our travels–extremely realistic. We want to see more of this guy. 5. Michael Caine: We did NOT want to see Alfred cry. But since we had to see Alfred cry, we’re glad that Caine got to regulate the waterworks. 6. Christian Bale: Bale is by far the best actor to wear the  bat-cowl onscreen–and we’ll always give him extra credit for his performance in “Empire of the Sun.”But he didn’t give us anything new in his third outing as the Caped Crusader. His freak-out on the set of Terminator Salvation was more revealing. 7. Morgan Freeman: Same beef. We’ve seen Freeman play this role before–and not just in the Batman franchise. 8. Gary Oldman: We’re sorry, but we couldn’t take our eyes off that damn moustache.  No doubt the talented Oldman was acting his heart out, but while he was doing that, we were imagining cleaning trash-strewn Gotham City streets with his facial hair. 9. Matthew Modine:  We were glad to see him playing a substantial role, and he sure does d-bag arrogance well. Maybe too well. We swear we saw him smirking to himself during a few scenes. 10. Marion Cotillard:  She made us cry in La Vie en Rose. She made us snicker in TKDR. Without giving away too much, let’s just say, we hope you’re not swigging from your Hefty can full of soda when you find out her character’s true identity.  The same goes for the emoting she does in her final scene, which would have been more at home in the pre-talkies part of  The Artist. We doubt you  agree. (Even our own Jen Yamato would put Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the top spot.) So tell us what you think.

Holy Plot Holes, Batman! 9 Logical Gripes With The Dark Knight Rises

So, The Dark Knight Rises happened. But as much as Christopher Nolan’s Batman finale tied the themes of the entire trilogy together with emotion and weight, capping what began in Batman Begins and continued in The Dark Knight with a full-circle completion of Bruce Wayne’s journey as a hero and symbol of hope in Gotham City and the world, well, there were just a dozen too many plot holes and contrivances along the way to ignore. Or were there? Let’s dive right into spoiler territory and navigate the WTF-iest of TDKR ‘s more perplexing leaps of logic, shall we? SPOILERS FOLLOW, OBVIOUSLY. Bane’s Overly Complicated 5-Month Plan Let’s start with the dastardly terrorist plot that sets TDKR in motion. Bane gets slimy exec guy Daggett to hire Selina Kyle to steal Bruce Wayne’s fingerprints to make some fraudulent deals (via very public hostage-taking assault on the stock exchange) in order to force Wayne Enterprises into Miranda Tate/Talia al Ghul’s hands, so they can bankrupt the billionaire superhero whose identity they already know and then manipulate him into giving them the technology that can be fashioned into a nuclear bomb. *Gasps for breath* Then Bane destroys Gotham with a few neat set pieces (the football stadium explosion and the simultaneous bridge attack are superb, I’ll admit) thereby cutting Gotham City off from the rest of the world, unleashing the prison population into the streets, and imposing chaos on the citizenry… but only for about 5 months, until his bomb will nuke the city anyway — conveniently enough, the perfect amount of time to leech hope from the people of Gotham AND allow Bruce to recover from a broken back, climb out of the pit, trek across the globe with no ID and no money and no smart phone, sneak back into Gotham City, and save the day! Bruce Wayne and Miranda Tate’s Out of Nowhere Hookup If The Notebook taught us anything, it’s that two attractive people caught in the rain will get to boinking sooner or later. That’s just what happens. So of course Bruce, who’s been grieving the loss of his beloved Rachel for 8 years, will fall into sexytime with the pretty board member who he’s never so much as locked eyes with until like two days ago, let alone had any meaningful chemistry with. IT’S SEX RAIN. GET OVER IT. There must be missing footage on the cutting room floor that sets up Bruce and Miranda’s chemistry better, and maybe even shows us a bit of the action, so to speak. There must . Why would Gotham’s preeminent costumed detective superhero let down his guard enough to leave a strange lady sleeping in their fireside bed, alone in his house of secrets, where the push of a button on a desk opens the door to the Bat-cave? Especially since she herself has mysterious scars and secrets of her own? Probable answer : The back-on-the-saddle hubris that led Batman to ruin the cops’ pursuit of Bane in his first return to crimefighting also makes him underestimate Talia. Bedding her is a step forward in his return to life and becoming a whole man once again after nursing his broken heart (and likely being a celibate creepy old mansion hermit). And maybe he spent a few hours offscreen in his Bat-cave Googling Miranda and doing an extensive background check on her before going there, only the League of Shadows has really, really good hackers and fake identity engineers on their payroll, in addition to prison doctors and Mongolian-chic wardrobe stylists. Terrible Hand-to-Hand Fight Action That Makes No Damn Sense Bane’s a hulking, physically superior adversary who can kill people with his finger and batters Batman (admittedly, an over-the-hill, hasn’t hit the gym in 8 years Batman) around like a rag doll — which explains why their first fight in the sewers is so awkwardly one-sided. But once Batman recovers from his broken back, does a few prison push-ups, and then suits up after focusing his anger into his workout regimen for months… their fist fights look pretty much the same. There’s a shot on the City Hall steps where Batman leaps ahead of Bane, then turns to face him like a kid on a playground that made me groan. In no way does Batman seem to have learned from his past failures against Bane; he doesn’t employ strategy or gadgetry to defeat his stronger nemesis. When Bane grabs a shotgun, of all things, to finish the Caped Crusader, it’s Catwoman who offs Bane with a blast from the Batpod. And then we forget Bane was even in this movie for the rest of the film. Sigh. Side note : It’s worth acknowledging that the entirety of TDKR ‘s final act is constructed so that the people around Batman must step up individually to help save Gotham. The fact that Batman can’t do it all by himself, and can’t even defeat Bane alone, reinforces the theme. Maybe he’s getting too old for this shit after all. Still, it’s not very satisfying when the individual parts don’t make total sense on their own, is it? Batman’s Superhuman Time Management Before zooming off in the Bat with nuclear bomb in tow, and shortly after returning to the city after five months in the middle of nowhere prison with about a day to save the world, Batman somehow manages to put all of his legal affairs in order, leaves the pearl necklace for Selina (heh) and detailed instructions to Blake in a duffel bag at his lawyer’s office, sets a gasoline fire on the bridge in the shape of the Bat, saves Gordon in the nick of time, saves Blake in the nick of time, and fixes the Bat-symbol. I don’t know how he does it! Literally. Best explanation: He’s Batman. Enough said? Bruce/Batman’s Coincidental Death Are you telling me that nobody notices that Batman “dies” in a blaze of glory the same day that Gotham’s most famous billionaire playboy also dies, leaving his estate to a bunch of orphans and willing his duffel bag of spelunking gear to some junior cop? Which brings me to… Bruce and Selina’s European Vacation I don’t believe that A) Emo Alfred would sit there on his fancy-sad vacay, see Bruce at the next table, alive and well, and not go give him a huge weepy hug, or B) a presumed dead billionaire playboy like Bruce Wayne can just go brunching in the open in France or whatever Florence and not be recognized. I kinda dig the idea that with nothing left in the Wayne coffers Bruce and Selina have retired to the French Riviera Italy to live off of her burgling money. Possible answer: This is just Alfred’s fantasy version of what he’s always wished to see, and Batman/Bruce Wayne is really dead, and Chris Nolan has Incepted us all over again. Selina’s Special Friend, Wink Wink Presuming Selina Kyle has a more than friendly relationship with Juno Temple’s minx-in-training is a stretch, though they certainly seem to be BFFs/roommates/collaborators, ladies from the wrong side of the tracks trying to hustle their way up the food chain. That said: What’s up with that one hug? You know what I’m talking about. Temple pretty much disappears once the movie gets going, but maybe she has additional scenes that flesh out their relationship that didn’t make the edit. Discuss. Possible answer that I hope isn’t the case: Selina is bisexual and uses her sensuality as a tool against male marks… until she falls for Bruce/Batman and runs away with him to live happily ever after, leaving her girlfriend behind in Gotham. Ten bucks says this comes into play in the eventual TDKR XXX porn parody. Good luck, Robin! The good news: You’ve got a cave full of fancy toys and extra Bat-suits. The bad news: There’s no money left to finance the operation. At least you know where the Bat is parked, on top of some building under some camo tarp. No one else will find it there, obviously. Probable answer: Blake will take up the Batman cowl and figure out his own way of doing things, thus launching an entirely new Bat-series which I’ll totally watch because Joseph Gordon-Levitt was the best thing about TDKR . Room For The Justice League? So WB wants to carve out a superhero super-team up, a la The Avengers , around DC’s Justice League. Fair enough. But if folks like Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Superman exist in the same universe, where the hell are they during Batman’s five-month absence from Gotham City? If the Justice League is possible in this film world — and maybe it’s not, since Nolan’s said to be done with his Batman storytelling, and despite his involvement in Man of Steel perhaps the two franchises aren’t designed to co-exist just yet — then you have to think some other superhero out there would have swooped by to prevent the total destruction of one of America’s biggest metropolitan populations, especially given that even the U.S. government has been rendered useless, leaving the entire city in the hands of a madman. Does it really matter? Either any potential Justice League spin-off will not connect to the TDKR world, or it’ll conveniently take place after the events of TDKR . This will likely be explained away or disregarded if/when the Justice League movie moves forward. — Phew . All that said, TDKR was visually breathtaking and thematically resonant. Plus, it was Batman! At least there were no codpieces or Schumacherisms to complain about. So there will inevitably be two kinds of people: Those who can’t help but be irked by the plot holes riddled throughout TDKR , and those who don’t care and love it anyway. Where do you stand? Was this the movie Bat-fans deserved, or the one they needed? Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Eff A Coldhearted Thug: 15 Dead And 50 Killed After Gunman Opens Fire In Aurora, Colorado On “Dark Knight Rises” Theatregoers

There has been a tragic shooting in Colorado at a movie theater during a screening of “The Dark Knight Rises.” At least 14 people were killed and 50 wounded when a gunman opened fire during an early Friday morning screening of the new Batman movie at an Aurora, Colorado, theater, Police Chief Dan Oates told reporters. The heavily armed suspect, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was apprehended by police in a rear parking lot of the theater, Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN. The suspect was not immediately identified, though Fania said he was believed to be in his early 20s. “He did not resist. He did not put up a fight,” Fania said. Police seized a rifle and a handgun from the suspect, and another gun was found in the theater, he said. ates said there was no evidence of a second gunman. Chaos broke out during the showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” at the Century Aurora 16 theater when the shooting began, police and witnesses said. “We saw people running around and screaming,” a man, who was not identified, told CNN affiliate KUSA. He said there was confusion in the theater when the shooting began because many believed the sound of gunfire was coming from the movie. Oates said that the suspect used some sort of “smoke device” before opening fire in the theater. Witnesses told KUSA that the gunman kicked in an emergency exit door and threw a smoke bomb into the darkened theater before opening fire. One movie-goer, who was not identified, told KUSA the gunman was wearing a gas mask when he released a smoke bomb and then began moving through the theater, randomly shooting at people. Cell phone video taken by someone at the theater showed scores of people screaming and fleeing the building. Some had blood on their clothes. One police officer carried a girl believed to be about 9 with gunshot wound to her back out of the theater, a witness said. “She wasn’t moving.” Authorities have also evacuated the suspect’s Aurora apartment building after “he made a statement about explosives” in his unit, Oates said. Of the wounded, at least 20 were being treated at the University of Colorado Hospital, said spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery. All of the wounded suffered from gunshot wounds, which ranged from minor to critical, she said. “They’re arriving by police, by ambulance. Some are walking in,” she said. Ten people were killed in the theater and another four died at area hospitals, Oates said. Hundreds of police officers descended on the theater, and the FBI has joined the investigation. “We were calling for help from every police and fire agency,” Fania said. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this terrible tragedy. Sad that people can’t even go and seek entertainment without bloodshed. SMH. Source Photo Credit: Julie Miller/VanityFair
