‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1’ Wins Best Movie 2012 At Movie Awards

Penultimate ‘Twilight’ film earns the series its fourth Golden Popcorn in the category. By Amy Wilkinson Taylor Lautner accepts Best Movie for “Breaking Dawn” at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — It was a pair of four-peats for “The Twilight Saga” at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , as the vampire romance not only took home Best Kiss , but the night’s big award — Best Movie — as well. The flick beat out fellow contenders “The Hunger Games,” “Bridesmaids,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” and “The Help” for its fourth consecutive Golden Popcorn in the category. Stars Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone and producer Wyck Godfrey took the stage to accept the award from presenter and Stewart’s “Panic Room” co-star, Jodie Foster. “Thank you so much, you guys, I know I always say the same thing,” Stewart said. “I’ve been promoting ‘Snow White,’ and I get asked a lot of questions, especially about ‘Twilight,’ which I love. The most common is, like, ‘God, you must be so happy to get away from it. You must be so happy to distance yourself from it as far away as you possibly can.’ And I’m like, ‘Shut up! What are you talking about?’ I know we’ve been here for a while, so really, thank you very much.” “We really have so many people to thank, not only for this award but for the past few years,” Lautner chimed in. “But first and foremost, we have to thank you guys. I want to thank the whole entire cast and crew for their hard work and passion on this. Our producers, Wyck Godfrey and Karen Rosenfelt. Our incredible director Bill Condon, all of Summit Entertainment. And I forgot a big one, the creator of this thing, producer and author Stephenie Meyer. I’m so excited for you guys to see the last and final part of ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ in theaters November 16.” Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. ‘Snow White And The Huntsman’ Sequel Moves Forward

‘I think the corruption of power would be the second one,’ director Rupert Sanders told MTV News of his sequel plans. By Fallon Prinzivalli Charlize Theron in “Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: Universal Studios It’s time to re-saddle those horses and take up your armor again, fantasy fans. “Snow White and the Huntsman” is returning once more. Universal is moving forward with their plans to make a sequel to Rupert Sanders’ edgy adaptation of the classic fairy tale, following the film’s box-office debut with $56.3 million last weekend . Deadline New York reports that David Koepp is already working on the script, and now the studio is in talks with Sanders about returning to direct. In “Snow White and the Huntsman,” the princess ( Kristen Stewart ) is helplessly locked in a tower by Queen Ravenna until an opportune moment helps her escape. She journeys into the Dark Forest, where she meets the Huntsman ( Chris Hemsworth ), and together they fight the evil witch to win back their kingdom. When MTV News sat down with Sanders last month to discuss the film, he revealed his initial ideas for the sequel, saying Snow White’s newfound supremacy may lead to her downfall. “I think the corruption of power would be the second one. I think we’ve created this very chaste girl who’s got to this position and now she’s in this position of supreme power,” he said. “We wanted to be contemporary with the theme here and I think in the next film we’ll do the same. There’s so many examples of people corrupted by power. When we were talking about it, myself and [producer] Joe Roth, there were so many things happening in the newspapers of these very powerful men abusing that power in hotels and sports locker rooms. People who get powerful sometimes lose their bearings and abuse that power and that’s kind of an intoxicating theme.” While the story line certainly sounds interesting, when we spoke to Stewart at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , she seemed skeptical. “Well, I’m not saying anything. Nothing at all,” she laughed. “Let’s undermine our entire lead character in the very second [film]. It’s like, ‘No, that’s my whole [thing].’ It would be so weird to [make her darker]. It would break me, which would probably be interesting to watch.” “But then we have to rebuild you, which is exciting,” co-star Hemsworth added. The actress, however, has nothing to fear yet. While Sanders is attracted to this character arc for the fairy-tale princess, he’s not positive that we’ll see her go rogue in the sequel. “I’m not sure whether that’s what the second film will be,” he said. “But I like that idea at the moment. You[‘ve] got to play with it a bit.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Snow White and the Huntsman.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Lucy Hale on Fifty Shades of Grey Role: Yes, Please!

Lucy Hale stars on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars , but she’s perfectly honest about coveting the lead role in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie . The pretty, little star is a big fan of the best-selling book and admits she can see herself as Anastasia Steele in the film, which has yet to be cast. “I just finished the first book. I’m speechless,” she said at the MTV Movie Awards. “I think every girl on the carpet wants to play [Anastasia Steele].” “That would be freaking awesome,” says the actress, who turns 23 next week. “I’m really curious to see how they’re going to turn it into a film.” As are we. Not only does it involve heavy does of risque sex (think bondage, S&M, all that good stuff), the dialogue is absolutely beyond terrible. As for a dream Fifty Shades of Grey co-star? He’s been talked about plenty for the part. “Someone sexy but approachable… Looks-wise, [Ian Somerhalder] is a good one.” Plenty of fans probably agree with her on that selection, and The Vampire Diaries star himself has expressed interest in the role when asked. What do you think? Can you see Lucy Hale as Anastasia? What about Ian Somerhalder as Christian?

‘Bel Ami’: The Reviews Are In!

‘This new ‘Bel Ami’ has a lot to recommend it, but it never seems as artful or smart as ‘Dangerous Liaisons,’ writes Noel Murray of the A.V. Club. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson in “Bel Ami” Photo: Magnolia Pictures At long last, your wait to see Robert Pattinson in all his shirtless , pants-less, bum-baring big-screen glory has arrived! “Bel Ami” opens in Los Angeles, New York and other select cites Friday (June 8), in addition to already being available on VOD. Our story takes place in 19th-century Paris, where self-made man of sorts Georges Duroy (Pattinson) uses his wits and powers of seduction to rise from poverty to wealth, from a prostitute’s embrace to passionate trysts with wealthy beauties. It’s a curiously familiar societal setting in which politics and media jostle for influence and where sex is power and celebrity an obsession. As excited as Pattinson fans are to see their favorite star in action, the critical mass is less than impressed with the “Twilight” hunk’s assets in this particular period piece as it’s currently sitting at a 31 percent “Fresh” rating at Rotten Tomatoes . Without further ado, let’s sift through the “Bel Ami” reviews! The Story “Guy de Maupassant’s novel ‘Bel Ami’ has been adapted for the stage and screen multiple times — most memorably in 1947, in a movie starring George Sanders and Angela Lansbury. The novel’s appeal is obvious: It explores the social strata of 19th-century Paris by showing an ambitious scoundrel hopping from bed to bed. But given the era when the book was written, and given when its best-known adaptations were made, most ‘Bel Ami’s have had to imply a lot, being coy about what’s really happening in those private chambers. So for the new adaptation, directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod and screenwriter Rachel Bennette try to take more advantage of the freedoms of modern cinema, making sure that their ‘Bel Ami’ has plenty of sex and straight talk. The result is almost a test case for whether explicitness is a virtue. The verdict? Inconclusive. This new ‘Bel Ami’ has a lot to recommend it, but it never seems as artful or smart as ‘Dangerous Liaisons,’ the film it most resembles.” — Noel Murray, A.V. Club Pattinson’s Paramours “What we get … is a dumb, entitled-but-tortured dreamboat falling into bed with a bunch of aristocratic women, and then turning inexplicably and insupportably Machiavellian only after he’s thoroughly slighted. First charming the throaty, free-spirited Madame Forestier (Uma Thurman, giving the film’s most engaged performance, to little avail), then the apparently erotically frustrated and still slightly gaminesque Clotilde (Christina Ricci, who looks pretty comfortable striking poses inspired by Degas’ odalisques, bless her heart) and finally wife-of-hated-boss Virginie (Kristin Scott-Thomas), Pattinson maintains the air of a kid being sent to bed without dessert. … The more experienced moviegoer may experience relief from the movie’s tedium by recalling the much better period pieces that female members of the cast have appeared in. Seeing Thurman in elaborate costume brought back fond memories of the much edgier and coherent and fun ‘Dangerous Liasons.’ For Ricci, of course, there’s ‘Prozac Nation,’ no, wait, sorry, the appealingly bloody Gothic ‘Sleepy Hollow.’ And for Scott-Thomas, well, when her character finds out that Duroy has just left the army after serving for five years in Algiers, she says, ‘I once heard a rather foolish story about the desert,’ and of course I thought, ‘You mean “The English Patient”?’ ” — Glenn Kenny, MSN Movies A Pouty Pattinson? “Mr. Pattinson’s strained performance in ‘Bel Ami’ leads a long list of problems in a film whose plot is so elaborate it would have been better served spread out over several hours. … As you watch Mr. Pattinson twist his features into expressions of cunning and treachery, as if he had just been practicing in a mirror, the primary missing ingredient is charm. This reasonably good-looking 26-year-old English actor, with his asymmetrical eyes and a doughy torso, affects a cold, reptilian sneer. Bad boys may have their appeal, but this one lacks the animal magnetism of even an amateur Lothario. To watch Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman and Kristin Scott Thomas melt under his icy ministrations is to roll your eyes in disbelief.” — Stephen Holden, The New York Times The Final Word, Pro-Con Style “[O]n the whole ‘Bel Ami’ is highly watchable. As is often the case in costume pictures especially, the degree to which different characters are convincingly of the world of the film varies. Thomas, for instance, is at once tragically and comically lovely as the good, religious wife seduced out of her right mind. She can telegraph that world in a glance and a few words. Thurman has a tougher time with Madeleine; although she makes a shattering indictment of Georges near the end, her character in particular — the ambitious political player stymied by her sex — demonstrates an endemic problem with the script (by Rachel Bennette) and the direction: The best performances seem to inhabit a story that the filmmaking doesn’t bear out.” — Michelle Orange, Movieline “Is it his acting, the inexperience of co-directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod — each making their feature film debut — or both? Some reports from Cannes (although not from TIME’s Richard Corliss) had Pattinson coming into his own in David Cronenberg’s ‘Cosmopolis,’ but he gives no hint of depth in ‘Bel Ami.’ On the other hand, even an expert meanie like Colm Meany, playing George’s dismissive editor, doesn’t make much of an impression. The ladies fare a little better. Scott Thomas, despite her blessings in the innate elegance department, makes a convincing case she’s as pleased at being petted as a neglected whippet. In between considered puffs on a cigarette and playing a parlor game of French politics, Thurman’s Madeleine has a memorable sex scene with George involving both a figurative and, one senses from the pain on Pattinson’s face, literal testicular crushing. Time check: it’s been 24 years since she played the innocent virgin in the similarly themed, infinitely superior ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ (which in turn spawned its own teenaged version, ‘Cruel Intentions,’ apt to be a lot more fun for Pattinson’s ‘Twilight’ fans than ‘Bel Ami’). Reality check: Robert Pattinson and John Malkovich; very different generations of le sex machine Fran

‘Hunger Games’: Five Things We Learned At Movie Awards

From filming locations to Finnick contenders, here are the facts we reaped from the stars on the big night. By Amy Wilkinson Alexander Ludwig and Josh Hutcherson at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images ” The Hunger Games ” made its MTV Movie Awards debut this past weekend, and the odds were clearly in the series’ favor as it walked away from the star-studded arena as victor, clutching four Golden Popcorns triumphantly. We, in turn, picked up a few party favors as well, namely five things about the cinematic series and its stars. Check them out: The Games Have Only Begun If there was any question whether “The Hunger Games” could carry “Twilight”‘s banner once the vampire romance makes its final Movie Awards appearance in 2013, the dystopian flick’s four wins set that debate to rest. With statuettes for Best Female Performance (Jennifer Lawrence), Best Male Performance (Josh Hutcherson), Best Fight (Lawrence, Hutcherson and Alexander Ludwig) and Best On-Screen Transformation (Elizabeth Banks), we expect “The Hunger Games” series to set the ceremony on fire for years to come. Jennifer Lawrence and Elizabeth Banks Are Good Sports We knew co-stars Lawrence and Banks had well-honed senses of humor, but they continued to prove their gameness with two much-talked about moments during the show. In one of the night’s spoofs, Lawrence starred as herself — the unwitting victim of hapless archery expert Lester Boonshaft (played with aplomb by “The Soup” host Joel McHale). Let’s just say we don’t know a lot of actresses willing to wear an arrow through their head. Then, in a lovely unscripted moment during her acceptance speech for Best On-Screen Transformation, Banks was surrounded by presenters and “Magic Mike” stars Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello (clad in half a fireman’s uniform), Banks (clearly enjoying the gyrating) mused, “I just want to thank MTV for this moment right here. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, MTV. This is just the best moment of my life.” Buy Your Plane Ticket For Georgia … Maybe Thanks to the Quarter Quell’s jungle-like arena, the stars of “Catching Fire” have been anticipating a tropical shoot locale for some time now, but Hutcherson revealed the cast could be heading down south, as well. “I haven’t heard anything confirmed yet, but Atlanta is definitely a big possibility,” he said. “And I know they’re looking at Hawaii too for some of the tropical stuff when we’re in the games. It’s gonna be somewhere nice!” We’re packing our sunscreen already, Josh. Finnick Has Yet To Be Found… Not so fast, Internet. Despite rumors that Finnick casting was down to actors Armie Hammer, Garrett Hedlund and Taylor Kitsch , producer Nina Jacobson told the L.A. Times that the studio is far from finding front-runners. “That’s the thing that’s crazy — people are like way ahead of where we are,” she said. “We’ve not narrowed things down by any means. It’s funny to see how things can take on a life of their own.” So all you young, handsome, incredibly well-chiseled Hollywood actor types, you still have time to order a trident off eBay for auditions! …Which Gives Cast Mates Time To Brainstorm Despite the ardent fan and online speculation, many “Hunger Games” stars have yet to make their casting picks for the District 4 tribute. “I don’t [know], honestly,” Banks said. “Everybody that’s ever been mentioned seems fantastic. I’m sure they’ll find the right fit. I think the cast has come together in such an amazing way so far, and I know that their goal is to keep adding the best people and the people that it’s gonna be great.” Hutcherson added that he needs to brush up on the source material before weighing in. “I mean, honestly, I have no idea. I definitely need to re-read the second book,” he said. “I haven’t read it since I first read them, before the first one. So I think I kind of need to read it again to get a better grasp.” What was your favorite “Hunger Games” moment at the MTV Movie Awards? Josh Hutcherson Wants ‘Some Sort Of Friendship’ With Kristen Stewart

‘Hunger Games’ star reconnects with his ‘Zathura’ co-star at the MTV Movie Awards for the first time in five years. By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson backstage at the MTV Movie Awards Photo: MTV News “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight” collided over the weekend at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards when Josh Hutcherson ran into his “Zathura” co-star backstage. “I actually got to talk to Kristen Stewart tonight for the first time in five years, at least,” Hutcherson revealed to MTV News. “That was awesome to connect with her again, especially after everything that’s happened to the both of us [with ‘Twilight’ and ‘The Hunger Games’]. It’s nice to just kind of be able to talk again and hopefully have some sort of friendship. She’s fantastic.” “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” slayed the dystopian thriller out of the Best Kiss and Movie of the Year awards, but the actor promised there are no hard feelings between the two franchises. “Honestly, you know what? I’ve never really felt it to be a competition. And I wish I could pretend like it was ’cause it’d be fun, [but] it’s so not. Their cast is fantastic, our cast is fantastic and there’s never been any bloodshed. … Not yet,” he teased. Hutcherson certainly didn’t go home empty handed. Thanks to his adoring fans, he took home the Golden Popcorn for Best Fight along with the honor of Best Male Performance . “Just to be here is always fun, and then to be nominated on top of that is amazing, but to actually win something is surreal,” he said. “Best Male means so much to me. The people I was in that category with, like Ryan Gosling, I’ve said publicly how much I want to be him. The fact that I’m considered on the somewhat same level, it’s just mind-blowing.” The excitement for the actor didn’t stop there. He caught one of the most iconic performances of Movie Awards history when Johnny Depp took the stage with the Black Keys to perform “Gold on the Ceiling.” “I missed Fun., which I was disappointed in ’cause I wasn’t there — as one does when they miss something,” he laughed. “But Depp and Black Keys, one of my favorite actors and one of my favorite bands combined, I was just like, my mind was exploding. It was incredible. “I was like, ‘How are there not more people losing their minds?’ ” he added. “It was pretty insane. I didn’t know he played the guitar, let alone could be a rock guy rockin’ out and do all these things. It was pretty awesome.” And like everyone else with a semblance of interest in this summer’s box office, Hutcherson was thrilled to take in some never-before-seen footage of Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” “I’m a huge Batman fan. Growing up I actually thought I was Batman,” he said. “I wore a Batman mask and cape around until I was like 14 years old. For me, that movie is going to be the most epic thing of the summer, for sure.” Once he helps Katniss save the citizens of Panem, maybe he can take over Christian Bale’s role and rid Gotham of its evil? ” No. No way,” he said with a laugh. “Bruce Wayne, I have to stay away from that. It’s too much.”

Prometheus Holds Second Place in Summer U.K. Box Office

The Ridley Scott-directed Sci-Fi thriller awaits its U.S. bow this weekend and momentum appears to be on its side. Across the Atlantic where audiences have already flocked to see the movie, Twentieth Century Fox is already cashing in, with a £6.24M gross last weekend, which translates to just over $9.7M. That figure outshines any of the Alien movies, according to The Guardian which reported the figures. Of course anyone with a television in the English-speaking world and beyond knew last weekend was Britain’s Diamond Jubilee extravaganza and the government tacked on two bank holidays Monday and Tuesday so crowds could join in on the festivities. And while they did, some clearly took a break for some big screen good times because Prometheus tacked on an additional £3.68M ($5.73M) those days, making the pic bigger than the total gross across the pond than any of the Alien movies, according to The Guardian. The longer term impact is challenging to determine since prequels and sequels tend to muster fans to head to the theaters in bigger droves than a film first out of the gate. But for comparisons sake, Gladiator opened in May 2000 with £3.56M ($5.54M) and eventually tallied £31.2M ($48.56M), though Robin Hood opened with £5.75M ($8.95M) but it eventually totaled only £15.6M ($24.28M).

Phillip Phillips Has Kidney Surgery

‘Surgery went well,’ a rep for the ‘American Idol’ winner said of the kidney procedure. By Gil Kaufman Phillip Phillips Photo: Getty Images Just days after a source said “American Idol” champ Phillip Phillips
 was going to skip
much-needed kidney surgery, a spokesperson for the 21-year-old singer said he underwent a procedure on Wednesday and is now resting comfortably. “Surgery went well,” the a spokesperson told MTV News about the reportedly six-plus hour surgery in Los Angeles to remove kidney stones so large Entertainment Weekly reported that there was “no chance” he could have passed them on his own. “He’s resting and will be ready for the ‘Idol’ tour kickoff in July!” the rep added about the 45-day summer outing slated to launch on July 6 in Detroit. When you think about it, it’s pretty incredible that Phillip Phillips was able to not only hang in, but win “American Idol” season 11 given the pain he was in from chronic kidney problems
. The singer struggled with kidney stones during his entire run on “Idol,” and had a stent implanted in one of his kidneys in March to prevent blockage, and allow him to keep competing on the show. Phillips reportedly went through eight surgeries from the time “Idol” began in January until the May23 finale, but this week’s procedure could help alleviate a lot of the pain he’s been suffering through according to a leading nephrologist. “Kidney stones are fairly common … occurring in more than 10 percent of men and 5 of women and once they’ve formed one, they’re likely to form another,” said Dr. Gary C. Curhan a professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Editor-in-Chief of the “Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.” Typically made up of calcium, Curhan, who is not treating Phillips and has no firsthand knowledge of his case, said stones can be formed for a number of reasons, including low fluid intake (which leads to concentrated urine), dietary factors, certain medications and, in some cases, an anatomical predisposition to forming them. He also noted that the stent is a temporary measure and is typically very painful, but allows urine to continue flowing until the swelling in the ureter (the tubes that move urine from the kidneys to the bladder) goes down. Phillips was slated to have reconstructive kidney surgery right after his “Idol” win, but, according to TMZ the procedure was postponed because of a bad sinus infection that triggered a high fever. TMZ also reported earlier that Phillips suffers from a serious congenital kidney condition that produces stones so large they cannot pass and which has seriously damaged his right kidney. Curhan, who spoke to MTV News before Phillips had the surgery, said most stones will pass on their own, but in doing so will cause a huge amount of pain. Others are too big and require removal by a urologist, either by breaking them up with shockwaves or using a surgical tools to break them up internally or pull them out. He noted that it’s rare for stones to form quickly, as they normally take months, or years and multiple surgeries in a short period of time is also unusual. Cases where stones continually form and are hard to pass are typically caused by an anatomical difference that causes the kidney to drain urine improperly, which predisposes the patient to stones. “If aggressive therapy is not working, you have to have surgery to change the anatomy to help it drain better,” he said. “There is risk involved in the procedure [surgery], but not treating it can also cause risk,” he said. Usher Earned Channing Tatum His Best Stripper Money

‘I did ‘You Make Me Wanna’ when I was dancing,’ the ‘Magic Mike’ star admits to MTV News. By Kara Warner, with additional reporting by Josh Horowitz Channing Tatum Photo: MTV News If you’re a Channing Tatum fan or have been following the very entertaining news surrounding his upcoming movie “Magic Mike,” you know that before his days as a Hollywood heartthrob, the “21 Jump Street” star was a stripper in Florida. When MTV News caught up with Tatum during our special pre- Movie Awards treat, our “Sneak Peak Week event with “Magic Mike,” we enlisted Tatum’s co-star and “True Blood” hunk Joe Manganiello to ask Tatum a question about his scantily clad days in Florida. “Back in your Tampa stripping days, what was your most money-making routine, and can you take the crowd through a little walk-through of it?” Manganiello asked via a pre-taped video interview. “Yeah, what made you the most money?” Matthew McConaughey chimed in. “I know it wasn’t the backflip.” “It was Usher,” Tatum admitted, albeit bashfully. “I did ‘You Make Me Wanna’ when I was dancing.” The actor finished his answer not by demonstrating a portion of that particular money-making routine, but by dashing into the crowd to hug a few lucky screaming female fans. And although there has been much ado over Tatum’s stripper past, particularly with “Magic Mike” being loosely based on his experiences, the “Haywire” star said he will not be talking about or doing any stripping anymore after the film opens. “This will be my swan song, I will never do or talk anything about stripping after this ever, ever again,” Tatum promised , adding that he still can’t believe “Magic Mike” made it to the big screen. “It was just crazy, the whole time we were going through it, we just started laughing,” Tatum said of the movie, which hits theaters June 29. “What I think people don’t realize we financed this ourselves, we wrote and produced it all ourselves, it’s not a studio movie. I’m interested to see what people’s reactions are, it’s a fun movie, the first half and a serious movie the second.” So will Tatum be breaking out his go-to stripper move in the flick? “There is always a go-to stripper move,” he said. “But that’s for the wifey.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Magic Mike.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
