‘Project X’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics call the found-footage teen movie immature, unfunny and even dangerous. By Kevin P. Sullivan Jonathan Daniel Brown, Oliver Cooper and Thomas Mann in “Project X” Photo: Beth Dubber/ Warner Bros. “Project X” is the new found-footage movie that claims to show the most out-of-control party ever. Well, it seems like the party might be over based on the reviews the film has earned. Critics have skewered “Project X,” calling it immature, unfunny and even dangerous. For some, that might sound like a ringing endorsement of the party, but when it comes to throwing a movie together, “Project X” is much less successful. Here is our roundup of “Project X” reviews. The Story “In suburban Pasadena, three exceedingly ordinary high school dudes stage a birthday bash for one of them, even though they’re hardly the sort of guys that you’d expect to attract a hot crowd. Thomas (Thomas Mann), the one turning 17, whose parents are going away for the weekend, is the dutiful son who has promised — oh, has he promised! — not to mess up their home.” — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly The Laughs “It’s billed as a comedy, but there’s not a laugh to be had during the frenetic mayhem. There is also no plot beyond debauchery, nor characters beyond cardboard cutouts. Basically, it’s a setting, and a familiar one: a suburban home teeming with drunken, druggie, hedonistic, irresponsible high-schoolers.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today The POV “Aesthetically, the film sets the teeth grinding and the eyes aching. Presenting the spectacle from the p.o.v. of a home video camera documenting the event for posterity, first-time director Nima Nourizadeh and cinematographer Ken Seng swing the camera around with all the stability of a rowboat in a storm and unsurprisingly induce a strong facsimile of seasickness. The images tend to be dark and random, the music incessant.” — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter The Parents in the Audience “But only about an hour in, ‘Project X’ grows repetitive and starts running out of steam, and you begin to wonder what could possibly occur over the remaining 30 minutes or so. And not to get all mom-ish, but it does send a disturbing message to teens under the guise of ‘edgy’ entertainment. If you provide a setting and the means for strangers to get hammered, it will make you cool. If you are a young woman who wants approval, you must get naked and give up the goods.” — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press The Final Word “The only people likely to buy into the oh-so-shocking exploits of the teen comedy ‘Project X’ are those who can’t get invited to their own high school parties. Though the central blowout is as epic as advertised, so is the movie’s self-congratulatory obnoxiousness.” — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News Check out everything we’ve got on “Project X.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Taylor Kitsch Feels ‘Weird’ About Heartthrob Status

‘I only have about 6,200 mirrors at my house,’ he jokes during ‘MTV First: John Carter.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Kitsch Photo: MTV News Those who are most familiar with Taylor Kitsch likely know him from one role and one show: Tim Riggins and “Friday Night Lights.” The tortured hero is a special favorite among Kitsch’s female fans and catapulted him to serious heartthrob status. When MTV News caught up with Kitsch during “MTV First: John Carter” on Thursday, we asked if it ever gets old being objectified. “Yes, it gets old,” he admitted. “It makes you feel weird. You get awkward like I am right now. Hopefully, it doesn’t turn into validation of self. It is what it is. It’s flattering, but at the end of the day, I only have about 6,200 mirrors at my house,” he joked. “It’s no big deal. Who doesn’t?” Kitsch has previously stated that he understands and appreciates ladies’ love for Riggins but that he doesn’t want to disappoint them when they find out he isn’t actually the same guy they love from the show. Speaking of the rugged bad boy, we had to address the oft-mentioned “Friday Night Lights” movie, which show runner and likely director Peter Berg told us recently is still in the works. Although Kitsch still seems satisfied with how the show ended, he is intrigued by the idea of the movie. “First of all, it would be very hard to say no to Berg,” he said. “Secondly, I love that guy [Riggins], and he is truly a huge reason why I’m here, but I love the way we left him, I truly do. I’d love to read this script that we have just floating around.” But what fans really want Kitsch to answer: Lyla or Tyra? “Maybe neither?” he hedged. “Maybe we have to explore that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “John Carter.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Project X’ Finds ‘New Way In’ To Teen Party Movies

‘It has a very music-video kind of vibe,’ one star tells MTV News of found-footage film produced by ‘Hangover’ director Todd Phillips. By Kara Warner Jonathan Daniel Brown, Oliver Cooper and Thomas Mann in “Project X” Photo: Beth Dubber/ Warner Bros. For those of you who’ve seen the “Project X” marketing campaign and wondered, “What is that movie?,” the stars and producer have the answers you seek. Yes, this is a film about a high school party thrown by the not-so-cool kids that gets so out of control an entire suburban block is engulfed in flames. But it’s not just about the action; it’s the unfinished, citizen-videographer feel that defines the film. “How do you make a movie for a high school audience today?” producer Todd Phillips (“The Hangover,” “Old School”) asked MTV News, talking about how he and first-time director Nima Nourzadeh approached their new take on a classic concept. “It wasn’t so much about jumping on a found-footage bandwagon. It was more about: How do you make it feel current and different? When you’re making a comedy, it’s always, ‘What’s the way into this movie? What’s the new way in that we haven’t seen before?’ For us, that’s what this was.” “It’s stylized in a way that’s never been done,” added star Jonathan Daniel Brown, a.k.a. J.B. in the film. “It’s got three amazingly funny people, if I do say so myself, and it’s crazy. It doesn’t hold back.” “This movie has so much style, a lot because Nima directed it,” continued Oliver Cooper, a.k.a. mischievous instigator Costa. “It has a very music-video kind of vibe.” Thomas Mann, who plays the birthday boy and party host Thomas, said audiences will feel like they’re actually inside the party. “It’s really raw for a comedy. It’s not polished in the way that other comedies like ‘The Hangover’ are,” he said. “I think it wants to feel more personal, like kids hanging out, rather than set-up jokes, which is helpful, I think, with a found-footage film.” In addition to all the talk about fancy style and camera techniques, the film is basically a roller-coaster ride that quickly runs out of control. “I don’t feel that there are any other high school films that reach this level of insanity,” said Alexis Knapp, who plays the “popular pretty girl” Alexis. “It’s a whole other level,” added co-star Kirby Bliss Blanton. Lindsay Lohan on the Today Show of the Day

I only hate Lindsay Lohan cuz she ignores me after celebrating a beautiful night in a hotel together…with other people cuz you have to understand for months she was texting me all the time….back in her crazy days….before she decided to get herself on track….even though by the looks of her she looks far crazier now…. So I sent her this message…. Because her face is hilarious….she didn’t answer me…. I can’t understand why she’s doing this shit to herself…cuz she’s hotter when not jacked up with injection of putty. But even more hilarious is her interview on the Today show….I am amazed she’s only 25…..I still find her hot…I am ready for her Oscar….I just preferred her when she was addicted to drugs and made bad choices like hanging with me.

Katherine Heigl Kinda Naked for Some Movie of the Day

This is a clip from one of Katherine Heigl’s riveting performances in a romantic comedy you’d probably rather rip your eyes out than watch….seriously…I remember seeing a trailer for this and not only was I offended a storyline like this was sold and made into a moive….but I was offended that they cast Katherine Heigl….because I come from the school of thought that she’s the devil and should be ignored for the benefit of the world….putting her in movies does the opposite of that….it celebrates her and makes her an idol to dumb little girls….breeding a whole new generation of idiots…. Well the good news is that she got naked in the movie, but I don’t really know if that’s good news…but it is strategic naked, so if you’re on the fence about a naked Heigl cuz you think she’s fat…vile and the devil….you don’t have to watch this….

Andrew Lewis: Jenelle Evans’ Baby Daddy Revealed?

Troubled Teen Mom 2 star Jenelle Evans is reportedly “devastated” after learning the truth about her young son’s paternity, according to the UK’s Mail Online . Andrew Lewis, not that douche Kieffer Delp , is listed as the father of Jenelle’s son, Jace, who’s currently is in the custody of her mother, Barbara Evans. However, birth certificate be damned, she claimed she cheated on him and was unsure who the father was … until only recently finding out he is the dad. A friend says Andrew Lewis recently took a paternity test which proved 100 percent that he is the father , and that Jenelle has not taken kindly to this. “Andrew always knew deep down he was Jace’s father, but it’s a relief to actually prove it to Jenelle and finally get Jace back in his life,” the friend said. “Andrew broke down in tears when he found out and he cried when Jenelle finally let him see Jace via Skype for the first time in almost two years.” Jenelle Evans ‘ mother Barbara has custody of Jace due to her daughter’s troubled life, which includes many run-ins with the law and a stint in rehab. Jenelle has not yet revealed to little Jace who his father is. The Mail claims Andrew and Jenelle were Skyping on Christmas and when Jace asked who was on the screen she replied, “Nobody important.” This devastated Lewis, who “just lost it and broke down into tears; it was affirmation just how horrible of a mom Jenelle is,” his friend said. “It breaks Andrew’s heart having to watch his son grow up on TV, but Jenelle said that the only way he can have a relationship with Jace is if he films for Teen Mom so he signed a contract with MTV and has already filmed for next season.” “After confirming and documenting the DNA test Jenelle and her mom Barbara promised to send pictures, post cards and let Andrew fly to North Carolina to see Jace, but every one of his calls has gone unanswered so far.” “He’s trying to have a relationship with Jace so he can someday regain custody, but Jenelle and her mom are making every effort to continue to shut him out.” Guess we’ll be watching this play out in the coming months … on MTV.

Zac Efron on Red Carpet Condom Drop: My Bad!

Zac Efron lends his voice to the big screen version of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax , which hits theaters this week and for which the actor appeared this morning on The Today Show in order to promote. During the interview, though, the actor was forced to address an incident with Matt Lauer that was decidedly NOT in the movie’s script: his dropping of a condom on the red carpet of the Hollywood premiere. “I never really had a pocket-checking policy prior to going on the red carpet before, but now we fully instated one,” Efron joked, adding of the safe sex he clearly practices: “It’s a great message, to add to the many messages in the film.” Watch the awkward exchange between host and star now: Zac Efron Today Show Interview

Exclusive: Adam Sandler’s ‘That’s My Boy’ Trailer Debuts

Sandler is ‘off the rails and cursing every other word’ in new red-band trailer, co-star Andy Samberg teases. By Josh Wigler Adam Sandler in “That’s My Boy” Photo: Columbia Pictures Most movies about long-lost fathers reconnecting with their estranged sons don’t include overweight strippers launching fruit from their you-know-wheres. Then again, most of these movies are not “That’s My Boy,” the new comedy from Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg hitting theaters in June. MTV News has your exclusive first look at the NSFW red-band trailer for “That’s My Boy,” and if there’s one major takeaway, it’s this: There is no sign of the family-friendly, PG-safe Adam Sandler in sight. “It’s a hard R, which is extremely exciting, just in the fact that I don’t know that Sandler has ever done a hard R before, not with Happy Madison,” Samberg told MTV News in an exclusive interview. “The cut that I saw, which I loved, is what I thought the movie was going to be: the Happy Madison sensibility with a much edgier R-rating.” Indeed, we’d say that ending the trailer with a wedding dress covered in vomit and other bodily fluids fits the bill Samberg’s talking about. And if the Lonely Island frontman can be taken at his word, we still haven’t seen anything yet. “Sandler was having a lot of fun, doing stuff he hasn’t done since, really, his early albums, which is when I first became obsessed with him,” the “Saturday Night Live” performer said. “It’s certainly classic Sandler. He’s doing a Boston accent the whole movie; he’s off the rails, cursing every other word. We were dying the whole time we were shooting.” Part of the reason Samberg’s so excited to have been a part of “That’s My Boy” is his longtime status as a Sandler fan. “I’ve been joking that I’ve been carrying around this face my entire life, basically leading up to this moment where somebody says, ‘Hey, there’s this movie where someone has to play Adam Sandler’s kid, but he’s closer in age to Sandler than a normal kid would be,’ ” he laughed. “As soon as I read the script, I knew I wanted to do it. It sat for a while, but right around last fall, I heard that they were maybe thinking of doing it again. I told Sandler I’d love to do it, and he said, ‘We’ll see if we do it!’ And we did it! It was the happiest call.” “That’s My Boy” hits theaters June 15. For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
