Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Celebrate ‘The Help’

‘The Artist,’ George Clooney and Martin Scorsese among the other big winners at the show. By Ryan J. Downey Octavia Spencer and the cast of ‘The Help’ at the 2012 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Donald Glover wagged his tongue at Charlize Theron , George Clooney talked Naugahyde leisure suits, Patton Oswalt drank scotch, and a pair of Muppets chimed in via satellite as “The Help” and “The Artist” cleaned up at the 2012 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards . Funnymen hosts Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer jokingly called it “the ninth most exciting night in Hollywood,” but while it may not be as prestigious as the Academy Awards, the Critics’ Choice Awards are traditionally the strongest indicator of who will get Oscars. All four winners from the major acting categories last year — Colin Firth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo — later won Oscars. “The Artist” won Best Picture and earned Best Director for Michel Hazanavicius, who noted, “There are so many beautiful people here, I have to force myself not to ask [for] autographs.” And he wasn’t kidding. The beautiful people on-hand included Clooney, Theron, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams and countless more stars from the screen and behind-the-scenes. Broadcast live on VH1 from the Hollywood Palladium, the Critics’ Choice Awards included three wins for “The Help”: Best Actress (Viola Davis), Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer) and Best Acting Ensemble. Clooney won Best Actor for his role in “The Descendants.” The awards are voted on by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, made up of more than 250 television, radio and Web critics. Leonardo DiCaprio and Olivia Harrison, widow of late Beatles guitarist George Harrison, presented the Music + Film Award to DiCaprio’s longtime collaborator, filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Bob Dylan, whom Scorsese called “the great one,” performed. Fitz and the Tantrums were present throughout the night, playing as the house band in and out of commercial breaks. Sean Penn accepted the Joel Siegel Award live via satellite from Haiti, where he’s been continuously busy with the type of humanitarian work for which he was being honored. The show kicked off with a sketch featuring Huebel and Scheer as “inanimate object actors,” as folks like Jon Favreau, Michael Bay and Ray Liotta satirically praised their green-screen work as lamps, guns and spare tires in movies like “Transformers” and “Horrible Bosses.” The bit included a cameo from Martin Starr, who astute observers/ comedy fans love from “Party Down” and “Freaks and Geeks.” The hosting pair emerged onstage looking like the “Men in Black” with matching suits and launched into a monologue and faux Q&A that took lighthearted shots at the show itself (“there are no technical awards, because they are boring”), Vin Diesel and Adam Sandler. “Since this show started,” Scheer said, “seven more movies with Ryan Gosling have been released.” Dunst and Owen Wilson offered a toast to film critics (“Your words influence millions of movie lovers everywhere,” Dunst said) before presenting the first televised award of the night. Octavia Spencer was visibly moved as she accepted Best Supporting Actress. “Well, I’m not prepared. I wasn’t a Girl Scout,” she said. “Oh my God, this is kind of crazy. Whoo!” Wilson and Dunst returned (“Do you think the critics bought our toast a minute ago?” Wilson said dryly) to hand Best Supporting Actor to Christopher Plummer for his role as a gay man who comes out late in life in “Beginners.” “I’m completely turned on,” the 82-year-old screen legend said. “I feel terribly young tonight suddenly, and at my age, I need all the help I can get in that department. Thank you!” Next came a word from the “BFCA presidents” — Statler and Waldorf from “The Muppets”! The curmudgeonly duo from the Muppet Theater balcony said the show thus far “has more of a plot than ‘Tree of Life’ ” and “three times the laughs of ‘Contagion’ and ‘The Descendants’ put together!” During her first acceptance speech, Spencer had said, “I guess the operative word here is ‘Best Supporting,’ because I was truly supported by the most amazing cast and crew.” And not long after, she was elected by her castmates to speak as they accepted the Best Acting Ensemble Award together, which was presented by “Bridesmaids” costar Maya Rudolph and newcomer Elizabeth Olsen. Director Gore Verbsinski accepted the Best Animated Feature award for “Rango.” “Having never made an animated movie before — it is so incredibly difficult,” he acknowledged. “My respect and admiration for my fellow nominees this evening is tremendous.” Patton Oswalt, whose role in “Young Adult” had put him up against Plummer in the Best Supporting Actor category, swigged from a small bottle of scotch when he took the stage to introduce Best Comedy. He implored the audience not to feel sorry for him, however. “There are plenty of nuanced roles for schlubby actors out there. And the ones that [Paul] Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman don’t take are all mine!” Producer Judd Apatow dropped two F-bombs as he spoke on behalf of the team behind Best Comedy “Bridesmaids.” “Jerry Lewis once said that he didn’t think women were funny,” he pointed out. “So I would just like to say, with all respect: F— him!” The next section of the show saw Best Foreign Film awarded to the Iranian movie “A Separation” and a sketch parodying Stephen Spielberg’s “War Horse,” complete with an “interview” with the horse from the movie and a scene featuring Michael Cera. Later in the night, the hosts saluted “fictional characters we lost in movies,” including (spoiler alert!) “this girl” and “some ninjas” in movies like “13 Assassins,” “Shark Night,” “Fast Five” and “Scream 4” as a montage that played to the sounds of Boyz II Men’s “Say Goodbye to Yesterday.” Paul Rudd presented the award for Best Young Actor/Actress to Thomas Horn from “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” “Thank you film critics,” the former “Jeopardy Kids” champion gushed, “This is amazing!” Former child actor DiCaprio gave a long introduction to his friend and collaborator Scorsese before a series of clips from the filmmaker’s classic movies played. DiCaprio was joined by Harrison, and then Marty took the stage himself, shouting out the Hot Club of France, whom he listened to growing up in New York City in the ’40s. NBC sitcom stars Donald Glover (“Community”) and Mindy Kaling (“The Office”) gave out both of the screenplay awards. Kaling professed her adoration of versatile actor Michael Fassbender (“This is why I came here tonight, to meet him”) and Glover acted out what making out with Charlize Theron might look like. Best Adapted Screenplay went to “Moneyball.” Best Original Screenplay went to Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris.” “We accept this award on his behalf,” Kaling said of the absent Allen. “That’s awesome!” Muppet revivalist Jason Segel called all the guys in the Best Director category “my future directors” and told all of them, “I was really honored to learn that I’ll be making films with all of you this year” before he handed out the award to Hazanavicius for “The Artist.” “It feels like ‘The Help’ table is having more fun than us. Here’s a fun transition,” began Clooney, as he began to talk about continuing earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. “Very few have committed themselves as completely to the people of Haiti as Sean Penn. And he didn’t just dip his toe into the humanitarian pool, he dove in. … Sean isn’t here tonight because he’s in Haiti, but we have him live by satellite.” Penn thanked “the example” of Joel Siegel and of Clooney. “I was reminded that great filmmaking is truly a humanitarian act,” said Penn, referencing the earlier Scorsese montage. “The people of Haiti embrace the work that the committed among you do.” Penn’s ex-wife Robin Wright called 2011 “definitely the year of the woman” as she introduced the Best Actress category. “Everything beautiful and complicated about us was onscreen this year,” she said. Davis said she was “absolutely so humbled” by her win. Clooney hugged one of his competitors, buddy Brad Pitt, on the way up to accept his award from Dustin Hoffman, before sharing a story with the crowd about the time his father reminded him of his grandfather’s work as a sharecropper, which included a mention of the Naugahyde leisure suit his mother made for him in the sixth grade. “If you’re not proud of what you’re doing, then do it better,” Clooney said his father told him. “I have to say that I am very proud to be in this film.” After “The Artist” won best picture, Heubel and Scheer said their goodbyes. With a wide grin, Scheer advised: “Now let’s all get on Twitter and see who’s ripping us apart!” Stick with MTV News all night for the 2012 Critics’ Choice Awards winners , and don’t miss all the fashion from the red carpet ! The Artist Director Responds to Kim Novak’s Outrage Over Vertigo Theme

“I’ve done nothing wrong,” director Michel Hazanavicius told CNN when asked his reaction to Kim Novak’s recent comments lambasting The Artist for using the Vertigo love theme. “I used music from another movie, but it’s not illegal. We paid for that, we asked for that and we had the permission to do it. For me there is no real controversy…I feel sorry for her, but there’s a lot of movies with music from other movies, directors do that all the time and I’m not sure it’s a big deal.” [ CNN ]

Ludacris Taps Usher For Upcoming Spring Album

‘I’d say we’re maybe about 40 percent done,’ Luda tells Billboard about his Ludaversal. By Rob Markman Ludacris Photo: Dave Kotinsky/ Getty Images Are you ready for another Ludacris album? It’s been two years since ‘Cris dropped his last album, Battle of the Sexes, and the Atlanta MC estimates that his next one will hit stores this spring. “I get the beats together and I put out my ideas, so I’d say we’re maybe about 40 percent done,” the rapper told Billboard of his upcoming eighth LP, Ludaversal, which he anticipates will be out around May with a first single dropping in March. Luda, who dropped his 1.21 Gigawatts mixtape in November, also revealed one big-time guest on the LP. ” Usher is one person that I’ve already worked with,” he said. “In terms of other artists, you can say that there’s going to be a lot of surprises on here.” The pair already have a few collaborations under their belt. Who can forget Usher’s inescapable smash “Yeah!” from his 2004 Confessions album? The two also hooked up on Lil Jon’s “Lovers and Friends” in the same year and then again two years ago on Usher’s “She Don’t Know.” As far as what the two have cooked up for Ludaversal, fans will just have to wait and see. Throughout his career, Luda has shown a ton of versatility. An undeniable hitmaker, at times the nimble-tongued lyricist has been comical (2001’s “Area Codes” and 2004’s “Number One Spot”) and in other instances delivered healthy amounts of substance (2006’s “Runaway Love” and 2008’s “Do the Right Thing”). For Ludaversal, he will get a little personal. “It’s been a minute since I’ve been away from music, and there is just so much to talk about,” he said. “So [the album] is mostly about my personal life, my travels, my experiences, rumors, gossip — you know, everything coming together in one.” What are your expectations for Ludacris’ new album? Richard Armitage’s Journey To ‘The Hobbit’ Best ‘By Far’

The U.K. actor is Middle-earth’s most badass dwarf and One to Watch in 2012. By Kevin P. Sullivan Richard Armitage in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Photo: New Line Productions This winter, director Peter Jackson will deliver the long-awaited return to Middle-earth. “The Hobbit,” which will unfold across two films, begins with “An Unexpected Journey,” as Bilbo Baggins leaves to win back gold stolen from his companions. But these are not just any friends. Bilbo is accompanied by 13 dwarves, each with a larger-than-life personality. The leader of these adventurers, Thorin, will be played by Richard Armitage , who made a brief appearance in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” but will get his biggest Stateside break in “The Hobbit.” The British actor played a key role in last month’s trailer and will soon join the illustrious ranks of Tolkien alumni, alongside Viggo Mortensen, Sean Bean and Orlando Bloom. We spoke with Armitage about traveling to Middle-earth, the difficulty of working under pounds of makeup and leading a band of treasure-seeking dwarves. MTV : Congratulations on being named to MTV’s Ones to Watch! Richard Armitage : Thank you very much! MTV : Where are you currently in the filming schedule? Armitage : We just finished up our second block, so we start again at the end of January, and then we go — we think it’s the end of July. Then there’s a bit more in 2013, we reckon. MTV : What’s it like being on a single project for so long? Armitage : It’s really weird because when we started it was just this enormous mountain to climb, but actually, it’s going so fast. I think we’ve gotten to the halfway point now. It’s been really intense but so exciting. We literally just finished our location shoot that we’ve been out on the road seeing most of New Zealand. It’s been the best thing I’ve ever worked on in my life, by far. MTV : Is it easy to forget you’re acting? Do you get lost in the world the production creates? Armitage : The soundstages they made in Wellington, [New Zealand], most of the time it doesn’t feel like we’ve been working on a set. Even when there’s a green screen there, Peter’s vision of it is so clear and his description of it is so clear. The pre-production CGI that they’ve already created really fires up your imagination. That was the shoot we started with. On location, it’s just theirs to program these amazing images into your head, so we can now take them back into the studio. MTV : Will it be hard to leave behind once you’ve wrapped? Armitage : It don’t think it will be possible to leave it behind me. I think this is one of those characters that always stay with you because you spend so much time with him and it’s such a transformation. I’m in the character every day, and I’ve become so familiar with him. I sort of know how he thinks. I feel really close to the character, and he will continue beyond this job , [ spoiler ahead ] even though, he dies at the end of the movie. I think he is a fascinating character. I will probably wake up in six years’ time and be inspired to think about him again. It’s really exciting. MTV : How did your previous knowledge of the story change how you approached Thorin? Armitage : I read it quite a few times when I was young. I think going back to it as an adult is really interesting because it is a book that was, I think, was written for Tolkien’s children, but when you’re creating a piece on this scale, you have to really visualize it for a much broader audience. I think that’s the beauty of Tolkien. He does create very well-rounded, quite dangerous characters to play his protagonists. He risks scaring kids. He’s the original fantasy creator, and I think you have to invest those characters with the same gravity as if you were making a piece for adults. It was interesting coming back to it as an adult, re-reading it again, because it did have a simplicity to it, which I really like. I felt we could take those characters and really develop them beyond the book. MTV : You ended up with middle ground in terms of the amount of makeup. Did you feel lucky? Armitage : It did evolve. We all started with quite an extreme version of ourselves. I think because my character does spend a lot of time onscreen and you really have to understand what he’s going through emotionally, it became clear that if we started make the prosthetic as close to my features as possible but still make him a dwarf, it would be much easier to read the character. He has to go on such a journey, it was really important to do that. I grew my own beard after the first block because I felt that it was restricting my face. The jaw is so connected to emotion that I wanted to have that free. It made such a huge difference. It’s really weird now because I can’t play the character when I haven’t gotten everything on. It’s very hard to rehearse when you’re not in costume, when you haven’t gotten the prosthetics on, but I look in the mirror when it’s all finished and I don’t see it. I can’t see where it starts and where it ends. I just see the character. I’ve never had that before. It’s such a unique experience. It’s a face that doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to WETA workshop and the people that created it. MTV : How was it on set with so many actors playing the dwarves? Armitage : I love it. I absolutely love working as an ensemble member, and we really are an ensemble. There’s great camaraderie among all the guys. There is such a diversity of culture and background. We’re working with a lot of Kiwis, and there’s real mixture of British actors who come from television and theater and film. It’s exactly as the dwarves are. When Thorin assembles the quest, he pulls dwarves from all different places to go on this quest. That’s mirrored in who we are as actors. What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. It’s time to show character, poise and heart. Vote for your picks now at MTV Movie Brawl 2012 ! ‘Making The Band’ Alum Chopper City Recalls Recent Shooting

‘I gave him that look like, ‘You gonna have to kill me if you want this,’ ‘ MC exclusively tells MTV News. Chopper City Photo: Bad Boy The past few days have been scary for “Making the Band 2” star Chopper City , but after being shot Friday, the New Orleans MC is out of the hospital and on the mend. The rapper, who dropped a group album ( Too Hot for TV ) with Da Band on Bad Boy in 2003, was driving through Michigan on his way to a show when he got lost after his phone battery died and his GPS app failed. Chopper then noticed that a car was following him and pulled the Lamborghini he was driving into a gas station to try to shake his tail. “He acted like he was walkin’ past me … and I seen him reach for a strap,” Chopper told MTV News from his hotel room in Chicago. “He started shootin’ at me, and he shot inside my Lamborghini, and he hit me on my side. “He looked at my jewelry, but I gave him that look like, ‘You gonna have to kill me if you want this,’ ” the rapper continued. The shooter let off as many as four shots, Chopper estimated; he was hit once in his left leg. The gunman fled empty-handed, and the rapper was taken to the hospital, where he was able to charge his phone and call his entourage. As of now, no arrests have been made. “You shot me for nothing; I didn’t do nothing to you, dog,” he said. “I just a young dude trying to do my thing. I just felt like that was an unnecessary crime.” Since “Making the Band 2” went off the air in 2004, Chopper City has been grinding independently, releasing mixtapes and touring without the aid of a major label. His most recent mixtape, Zoovie with DJ Gunpay, was released last summer, and Chopper plans to drop his next tape, Hard to Kill, on his 26th birthday January 22. “I came up with it while I was in the hospital,” Chopper said of Hard to Kill. “They tried to kill, you ain’t just gonna kill me like that. I ain’t goin’ out like that.”

People’s Choice Awards Preview: ‘Hunger Games’ Cast, Demi Lovato, More Set To Hit Stage

Stars of ‘Twilight’ and ‘Harry Potter’ also on star-studded lineup for show airing tonight on CBS at 9 p.m. ET. By John Mitchell Jennifer Lawrence Photo: Dan Kitwood/Getty Images The People’s Choice Awards may be one of the more democratic awards shows of the season. After all, it’s fans, and not a faceless “academy” of industry professionals that decide who’ll take home the big PCA prizes in categories like Favorite Tour Headliner, Favorite TV Celebreality Star and Favorite Movie Star Under 25. And it’s all happening tonight at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. Host Kaley Cuoco, herself a nominee for her turn on “The Big Bang Theory,” promised a fun-filled evening, telling Ryan Seacrest on his radio show, “I’m really looking forward to it and there are a lot of great musical numbers and it’s going to be fun.” She also joked with the “American Idol” host that she plans on “changing 47 times, 47 dresses. I’m changing every 5 minutes. I want to go down in the Hall of Fame with that. So we’ll see how many times I can possibly change.” So who can fans expect to see on the red carpet? Only some of the biggest A-listers from the worlds of film, TV and music, including “Twilight” stars Robert Pattinson and Ashley Greene; “Hunger Games” leads Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson; as well as Emma Stone, Vanessa Hudgens, Chloe Grace Moretz, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, Julianne Hough and “Glee” stars Lea Michele and Cory Monteith. Also expected to attend are Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Tom Felton of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” which leads all nominees this year. “Potter” heads into the awards with nine nominations for Favorite Movie and Favorite Action Movie, Favorite Actor (Radcliffe), Favorite Movie Star Under 25 (Radcliffe, Grint, Felton and Watson), Favorite Ensemble Movie Cast and Favorite Book Adaptation. One notable absence is nominee Katy Perry, who was set to make her first public appearance following the announcement of her divorce from Russell Brand at tonight’s live event but cancelled earlier this week. She apologized to her fans on Twitter , writing, “Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the People’s Choice Awards. I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed! #KATYCATS.” Perry is nominated for a whopping seven People’s Choice Awards, including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Song of the Year (“E.T.”), Favorite Pop Artist, Favorite Animated Movie Voice (“The Smurfs”) and Favorite Music Video for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” PCA executive producer Mark Burnett clearly sympathizes with Perry’s decision not to attend , telling E! News that her choice was completely “understandable.” The show will include musical performances from Faith Hill and Demi Lovato as well as comedy sketches featuring Jimmy Fallon, Jane Lynch and the casts of “Parks and Recreation” and Cuoco’s own “The Big Bang Theory.” Among the other major nominees are “Bridesmaids,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “The Help,” “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and “Potter” for Favorite Movie. Ryan Reynolds, Pattinson, Johnny Depp, Hugh Jackman, and Radcliffe will vie for Favorite Movie Actor, while Anne Hathaway, Emma Stone, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Reese Witherspoon are squaring off for Favorite Movie Actress. In the music categories, the Favorite Male and Female Artist races are a who’s who of MTV favorites, including Eminem, Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, Perry, Adele, new mom Beyonc
