Carrie Fisher Dies; Beloved Star Wars Actress Was 60

Carrie Fisher, a veteran actress best known and revered for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, has passed away. She was 60 years old. Fisher was flying from London to Los Angeles on a United flight when she  suffered a major heart attack  on board an airplane late last week. The incident took place 15 minutes before the flight landed in LAX. Once the plane landed, paramedics worked on the star for 15 minutes with CPR before they were able to find the star’s pulse. She was then transferred to UCLA Medical Center and was in critical condition before succumbing to the heart attack earlier Tuesday. Family spokesman Simon Halls released a statement to the media on behalf of Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd: “It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning.” “She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.” Fisher, of course, sky-rocketed to fame in 1977 as one of the main characters in George Lucas’ iconic space opera  Star Wars . She recently reprised the role of Princess Leia in 2015’s The Force Awakens and next year’s Star Wars: Episode VIII . It’s unclear what will happen to Leia’s storyline in Episode IX, tentatively scheduled for release in December 2019. Along with this legendary film character, Fisher appeared on a number of films and TV shows over the years. She had been the voice of Angela on Family Guy since 2005; stopped by The Big Bang Theory as herself in 2014; and also portrayed Mia in Catastrophe. Fisher was even nominated for a pair of Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on 30 Rock in 2008; and Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special for Wishful Drinking in 2011. Fisher also recently made headlines when she came out and admitted to an affair with Harrison Ford way back during the filming of A New Hope . She spoke of this romantic entanglement as part of her press tour for The Princess Diarist, a memoir that was released on November 22 of this year. Three decades earlier, Fisher wrote her first memoir, along with the screenplay for the movie based on the book. She was married to Bryan Lourd and Paul Simon; Billie is her only child. The daughter of showbiz veteran Debbie Reynolds and entertainer Eddie Fisher, she was brought up in the world of film, theater and TV. Fisher made her film debut in the Warren Beatty-lead Shampoo while she was a teenager and was just 19 when she was cast in Star Wars . In addition to the second and third Star Wars films, Fisher starred in 1980’s The Blues Brothers and The Man with One Red Shoe. She appeared in Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters in 1986 and, later, the award-winning classic  When Harry Met Sally . Fisher wed musician Paul Simon in 1983. Theirs was an explosive marriage, according to Homeward Bound: The Life of Paul Simon author Peter Ames Carlin. The union was cut short by swinging stages of depression, the actress’ drug use and an array of personal insecurities. Nevertheless, the tumultuous relationship continued, on-and-off for several years, after the pair got divorced in 1984.  The star’s substance abuse problem was well-known, starting at only age 13 when she first started smoking marijuana, Fisher said. She later dabbled in drugs like cocaine and LSD. Fisher’s addiction was largely profiled in her 1987 best-selling, semi-autobiographical novel, Postcards from the Edge. Always open about her life, in good times and bad, Fisher’s book was later turned into a movie starring Meryl Streep. Fisher is the latest in a long line of major names to have passed away in 2016, as tragically detailed in the gallery below. We send our condolences to her friends, family members and other loved ones as they mourn the passing of one of the true greats. BOSSIP Exclusive: Common Talks Lending His Voice To Ava Duvernay’s 13th, Becoming More Active In Black Matters

Common Talks 13th , Social Activism Common is really living up to his original rap name “Common Sense” these days. The rapper’s activism anthem “Letter to the Free” is the end-title track on 13th and has already been nominated for a 2016 Critics’ Choice Documentary Award for “Best Song in a Documentary.” The song’s lyrics tackle America’s racial divide and reflect the film’s focus on the prison system as a new form of slavery in America. It’s also featured on Common’s own latest album, “Black America Again.” Take a listen: We caught up with Common to chat about the single, his invovlement with the project, and how his affiliation with Ava Duvernay movies have shaped his musical direction and activism… What made you want to become involved with 13th in the way that you have? 13th hit me in a way…it was like I know some of this, I didn’t know about this ALEC stuff, I didn’t even know the 13th amendment said that — I’ll be honest — I didn’t even realize that the 13th amendment said that if you’re a “criminal,” you can [legally] be a slave. So all that information, I’m still continuing to learn. It’s been an awakening for the country. This is part of American history and the same way we teach our kids about the people who came to revolutionize this country, we need to teach them about slavery too. We need to teach them about slavery and how that ties into where we are now. If they can see that, they would be able to put two and two together and start functioning differently. Your name has become more and more synonymous with “wokeness” in a sense since your involvement in Selma a few years back. How do you feel that movie experience prepared you for projects like 13th and even placing some of the messages you have in your latest album? Well, Selma was definitely one of the moments that changed my life forever. One of the greatest experiences of my life. One of the reasons is being introduced to the Civil Rights Movement in another way. It’s more than just researching and reading it in textbooks. You’re talking to people. Ambassador Andrew Young came and had a talk the first day of our rehearsal and said “What are you willing to die for? Live for that.” He said that was the whole mentality of the people of the Civil Rights movement. “We’re willing to die for freedom, so we’re going to live for freedom. We’re dedicating each day toward that.” One of the practical things I was able to connect with was the fact that each and every person that was a part of that movement, each day they contributed something towards fighting for that freedom. They dedicated their lives to saying “okay, some part of my day will be dedicated towards that.” I felt like, I have been doing things and putting my spirit and energy into wanting to see change, but I had to do more. I had to contribute my days into being more active and more present — not only in the music. So then, aside from the music, what ways did you begin pursuing to be more active? That made me think about things, and question how can I use my creativity not only towards the art that I’m doing that is socio-political work, but how can I use my mind towards these communities. So that made me start going into communities and start to listen and made me more political than I had ever been. Before I would think — “Okay, I need to vote for the president.” And “I’ll vote for this person I know about.” But now, I need to know. If I have a problem with police injustice and police killing Black people, I need to know what things I can do policy-wise to help change things. Who is the person that selects the police chief? Who is the person that sets up the training for the policemen in this state and that state? Not that I’m going to know everything, but even if it’s connecting with groups that do know, so that I can get that information and see how I can contribute my name, celebrity, whatever access I have, and creativity towards that change. What action has 13th pushed you to take? With this movie, I’ll put it this way: If I’m going to talk it and rap it, I’ll have to be it. So I will be at somebody’s prison — just building with brothers and sisters about getting out and what life will be like getting out and trying to provide help in that way. I even realized this morning from Kim Fox, the State’s Attorney of Chicago — she comes from Cabrini-Green in Chicago so she’s for the people, she comes from it — she says one of the biggest issues is, they don’t assist people when they’re about to get out of jail, so when they come out, they’re shocked. And it’s hard to get jobs, hard to get housing, you can’t vote in certain places, so then you feel second-class, and then you end up going back to that same cycle. So, if someone has been convicted of a crime, when they’re about to get out, when do we start training them to work on that? I want to help with figuring that out. Nice! Great to see a celeb taking his influence and really focusing on making a positive impact with it, right? Have YOU taken a listen to “Black America Again?” What did you think? Splash

Cuba Gooding Jr. Gets Wasted, Curses Off Awards Show

Cuba Gooding Jr. may have won critical praise for his portrayal of O.J. Simpson on this year's FX minseries, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. But the actor is a different kind of juiced in the clip below. It was filmed at at something called the Footwear News Achievement Awards, which held this past Tuesday in New York City. Gooding was on hand to present the Social Impact Award to designer friend John Varvatos. Sounds simple enough, right? But the former Oscar winner, by his own admission, had a tad too much to drink prior to taking the stage… and proceeded to give us one of the more memorable awards introductions of the year. “Nothing says I love you like f-cking sugar,” the 48-year-old actor said to open, referring, we guess, to the food provided at the event. “F-cking boxed lunched. I’m drunk now, motherf-ckers. Deal with it.” The crowd laughed right along with Cuba because… let's face it… they knew they were at the Footwear News Achievement Awards. “I thought the BET Awards were cheap,” Gooding says below. “In the words of Spike Lee, excuse my language but, they can fu-k you too, Spike.” An insider confirms to The Daily Mail that Gooding went straight for the bar as soon as he got inside the venue, prior to making a “beeline for Rihanna.” Gooding was also telling people that he and his wife are now separated. Ouch. Awkward! Watch the uncomfortable (and hilarious!) speech play out below:

Student Gets Wisdom Teeth Pulled, Emails THIS to Professor

Over the years, the Internet has been filled with hilarious videos of people who got their wisdom teeth removed… fell into a drug-induced haze… and then said some pretty crazy $hit. Like the girl who believed she was Kylie Jenner . Or the girl who REALLY wished she had bigger boobs . But the following story is a first. It’s the first time in memory that a young woman has undergone this procedure and then reacted to it by jeopardizing her college career. Her name is Abby Jo Hamele and she attends the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. When she is NOT under the spell of hydrocodone, this 19-year old is happy and bubbly and relatively sane, as you can see in her Twitter profile photo above. But after getting her wisdom teeth yanked out and then getting all drugged up, she looked like this: She also believed that her very much alive pug is her dead dog Sammy . But that wasn’t all. Clearly a responsible student, Abby realized that she’d be unable to turn in a class paper on time as a result of her condition. Not in her proper state of mind, she nevertheless took the time to email her professor and explain the situation, giving us one of the most memorable social media messages of 2016 in the process. “I EMAILED MY PHILOSOPHY TA WHILE I WAS HIGH ON HYDROCODON I’M DEAD,” Abby wrote as an introduction and explanation for a Tweet that has gone viral. “I unfortmately got my wisdom teeth sliced outr and have not not been reacting very well to the surgeryy nor the medicatioon i were given/ so I do not thimk that I will be able to habe my paper finisherd by Tuesday at all,” opens the email. We really should just publish the entire thing right here, shouldn’t we? How else could we do it justice? Is tehere any way I would be able to send you my paper at any later date??? I wnt to do very good on this paper you know becayse i like to do well in my classes. please sir I workled very hard and thouught that I would be abel to finish it on timme but my doctor said I will most likelly not be normal again until at least Thanksginvg turkey. If you say no then that is okay but i would be sad and i would reallyyyy lik e it if you said yes. Thank you Kevin, my dude. Abby Jo Hamele (pronounced hah-mil-lee) (if you were wondering) P.S. I will answer youpr questions in class forever so theere are not any more awkard silence. and i will buy you expo markers that work (even thougjh our tuition should pay for markers that work) love you bye The teacher’s assistant actually went ahead and wrote Abby back, which is amazing. He’s clearly an astute fellow. Someone give this man a promotion! And someone give Abby a high-five and maybe also a strong drink. We’re guessing she could use it right about now.
