Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…the second male lead from The Tudors ! After much speculation and gnashing of nerd teeth, Warner Bros. has finally announced that Henry Cavill is Zack Snyder’s pick to play the Man of Steel in the new Superman reboot. You might know him from the aforementioned Showtime series, or from the underrated Stardust , or as Stephanie Meyer’s rumored original choice to play sullen sparkler Edward Cullen. The internet stands ready to register your applause or disgust, comic geeks. Perfect pick or shady selection ? Personally, here at Movieline HQ, we’re just happy someone gave the poor sod a break . Because if there were, Movieline would be loading up a post full of them aimed at Fox Searchlight’s 127 Hours — our valiant sponsor, and your weekend viewing. At the very least, click on one of their ads. It’s the least we can all do to keep the lights on around here. Thanks, Searchlight!

Timeline: The Long, Tortured History of Orson Welles’ Lost Film The Other Side of the Wind

Word hit this week that Orson Welles’ famous lost, unseen film The Other Side of the Wind might finally see the light of day soon. It sounds like great news; people close to the production and who have seen footage say that Welles’ final film, which stars John Huston as a controlling director, is a potential masterpiece. Now, however, Welles’ former partner (and current rights-holder) Oja Kodar has

The Rite’s Mikael Hafstrom on His Exorcism Thriller and the Still-Shelved Shanghai

Director Mikael Hafstrom ( 1408, Derailed ) was initially skeptical of taking on the exorcism thriller The Rite , about a young priest (Colin O’D onoghue) who learns the craft of ghost — okay, demon — busting from Sir Anthony Hopkins in Rome. Then he read the non-fiction book which provided the basis for its story based from American priest (and guest Movieline critic ) Father Gary Thomas, and found that he could bring more to the table than the schlocky thrills found in most other genre offerings.

Evil Dead Trap Director Toshiharu Ikeda Dies at 60

Very sad news from Japan: It looks as though director Toshiharu Ikeda, who held a place on Movieline’s Halloween 25 horror film list for Evil Dead Trap , has been found dead. He is believed to have committed suicide by drowning. Besides a number of exploitation films in the early 80’s, including the fourth film in the internationally-infamous Angel Guts series, Ikeda was known in Japan for Mermaid Legend and the 2004 Tokyo International Film Festival selection The Man Behind the Scissors . Rest in peace. [ Jasper Sharp ]

Hobo with a Shotgun Star Rutger Hauer: ‘I’ve Been Underrated All My Life’

Forget Lizzie Olsen ; the breakout star of Sundance 2011 is clearly 67-year-old Rutger Hauer, who’s taken Park City by storm with his star turn in Jason Eisener’s grindhouse homage Hobo with a Shotgun . To celebrate the gory, tongue-in-cheek vigilante tale about — yes — a homeless hero with a shotgun, the Hobo folks hosted a thematically relevant Bloody Mary hour this morning where Hauer walked in wielding his titular firearm and regaled Movieline with six important revelations/life lessons:

The Mechanic’s Ben Foster on Gun Porn, Producing and Pedophile-Baiting

One look at the gun-crazy poster for The Mechanic and you know what you’re in for with this week’s hit-man thriller: Lots and lots of gun porn. Pairing Jason Statham as a calculating, composed assassin and Ben Foster as his boss’s loose cannon of a son, director Simon West remakes the original 1972 Charles Bronson flick of the same name with a greater focus on his characters. But the initial appeal, as Foster tells Movieline, was the prospect of getting to “blow sh*t up” with Jason Statham.

Director Lucky McKee Responds to His Irate Sundance Hater: ‘Then Don’t Watch It!’

When Lucky McKee’s Sundance horror entry The Woman premiered in Park City and promptly elicited walkouts, a panic injury, and one irate moviegoer’s infamous YouTubed rant, some — okay, Movieline — wondered if it was all a stunt . (For a personal retelling of the shouting match that followed, read Drew McWeeny’s firsthand account .) To set the record straight, Movieline went straight to the source for McKee’s version of what went down when the credits started rolling.
