Teenager Expelled From Texas High School After Reporting Rape To Administrators Via NYDailyNews When Rachel Bradshaw-Bean told teachers she was raped in her Texas high school’s band room, she was promptly kicked out of school for “public lewdness,” the now 20-year-old said. That was three years ago, but experts say schools still aren’t doing a good enough job protecting students from rape and hearing their stories when victims do come forward. “High schools across the nation are failing to live up to their responsibility to address sexual assault and harassment,” Neena Chaudhry, an attorney for the National Women’s Law Center, a Washington, D.C. nonprofit, told NBC News. “There’s no excuse.” Listen to THIS bullisht… In 2010, Bradshaw-Bean was a 17-year-old senior at Henderson High School, waiting for Key Club to start, when she says a boy, a junior, attacked her in the band room. “I was crying. I pulled my pants up and went to the bathroom to clean myself up,” she told NBC News of the incident. Bradshaw-Bean immediately told an assistant band director, who told her to “work it out with the boy,” she said. She and her family fought the school for not taking action, but Bradshaw-Bean was eventually kicked out and sent to a school for students with discipline problems, along with her accused rapist. “I don’t want anyone else to have to go through what I did,” she told NBC News, explaining how the school made her feel like a “criminal” for reporting rape. Experts suggest schools simply don’t know what policies to follow when it comes to sexual violence. The Department of Education periodically issues letters to schools to remind officials about Title IX, a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. But this year, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has received 59 complaints related to violations of the law, up from 33 in 2012, according to NBC News.
