Ben Stiller’s The Watch Avoids Trayvon Martin Connection, But Are Aurora Similarities Too Close for Comfort?

The Watch (nee Neighborhood Watch ) truncated its title to avoid conjuring the February killing of Trayvon Martin and its plot contains no major similarities to the teen’s controversial death. But in the wake of the Aurora, Colorado mass shooting — which may have spawned at least one would-be copycat thwarted today in Maryland — some of the violence-based laughs in the Ben Stiller-Vince Vaughn comedy might hit too close to home for some moviegoers. The comedy, about a suburban schmoe (Stiller) who starts a Neighborhood Watch gang after the murder of a friend, invokes the cultural conversation about violence that has been stirred anew by recent events. “There weren’t walkouts at my particular screening, but in a moment where Jonah Hill’s military-obsessed character Franklin threatens a group of teenagers with a pocket knife, muttering that he’ll ‘kill each and everyone of [them],’ the cringes reached audible levels,” writes Hollywood.com’s Matt Patches , noting audible discomfort among moviegoers at a screening he attended. Like the Columbine shooters and last week’s Aurora gunman, Hill’s character is a young white male with a violent streak on the fringe of society, who has a cache of firearms, including a semi-automatic rifle, stashed at home and is all too eager to use them again. Violent impulses mixed with societal frustrations are given a target when the Watch is called into action to battle their enemies — in this case, extraterrestrial aliens. “Franklin’s entire persona is eerily similar to those that have lashed out in the past: he’s a high school drop out, reject of the police academy, and object of bullying by the socially normal people around him,” Patches continues. “He wants to serve justice, but he’s inherently violent. Hill plays Frankin for comedy, and in another moment in history the act would be hysterical, but in the wake of tragedy it’s simply uncomfortable.” “[When] we see bloodshed early on in The Watch , it stings more than it amuses,” writes Salt Lake Tribune critic Sean P. Means in his review of the film. Hill’s character goes from comic relief to a figure that “instead makes us wince.” Over at the Huffington Post, writer Jonathan Kim echoes the uneasy sentiment. The problem isn’t that violent movies cause violent behavior, he says, but that America’s gun-happy culture is so often reflected in its media. “If American entertainment is seen as too violent, I see that as a reflection of our gun- and military-worshipping culture, not the cause of it,” Kim offers . “And if people copy the violence they see in movies, the problem is not the movies, but people who can’t tell fantasy from reality, and the ease with which our gun laws allow those people to arm themselves to the teeth. The Watch is obviously fiction, but sadly, when unstable people can buy such powerful weapons, we need to do more than just hope that they’ll only be aimed at bad guys and aliens.” Ultimately most critics seem to agree that The Watch hardly earns the attention or scrutiny it may receive from Aurora parallels; it’s currently at a dismal 13 percent at Rotten Tomatoes , while Movieline’s Michelle Orange called it slight and ephemeral entertainment. But beyond that, I’d give writers Seth Rogen, Jared Stern, and Evan Goldberg enough credit to have purposefully written Hill’s character as a commentary on the kind of gun-loving disaffected young man that could, under other circumstances, follow a much darker path. Raw and shaken sensibilities didn’t stop audiences from attending The Dark Knight Rises last weekend, but tracking approaching this weekend was flagging. As the national conversation about guns and violence and film rages on — and with most fans having already seen the event film — are audiences less enthusiastic to flock to theaters, post- TDKR ? And if they do go to the multiplex for the latest Ben Stiller comedy, are they prepared to process shades of Aurora’s gunman in Jonah Hill’s angry, armed loner-turned-hero? Just be warned: If you’re going to the movies this weekend looking for escape from the real world, The Watch may hit closer to home than you anticipated. Then again, if Ben Stiller and Co. can inspire discussions about violence and gun control in America amid the broad guffaws, penis jokes, and one-liners, that might be a good thing for all involved. Shook Ones: George Zimmerman Wants A New Judge In Fear That He Won’t Receive A Fair Trial

George Zimmerman’s Defense Team Requests A New Trial Judge Former self-appointed neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman is now requesting a new judge be appointed to handle his murder trial. George Zimmerman, accused of murdering 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, filed a motion on Friday to disqualify the judge that will preside over his case, citing his fear that he will not be given a fair trial. Zimmerman, via his attorney, Mark O’Mara, filed the 17-page document with the Seminole County Circuit Court. The motion is a response to Judge Kenneth Lester’s July 5 order that set $1 million bail for Zimmerman and claimed that Zimmerman had “flaunted the system” and practiced “deception upon the court.” It was the second time Lester granted Zimmerman bail. Lester revoked a previous $150,000 bail in April after prosecutors presented evidence that Zimmerman and his wife misled the court about how much money they had available by speaking in code on phone calls. Prosecutors added that Zimmerman initially lied about the existence of a second passport. O’Mara recently tried to appeal to the judge that Zimmerman was confused and fearful back in March when the alleged deception occurred. In a second bond hearing in June, O’Mara reiterated that Zimmerman had voluntarily turned himself in to the court and now was completely open regarding his financial ability. Lester, however, in that July 5 bail order, remained skeptical of Zimmerman’s motives and expressed irritation at being lied to. He accused Zimmerman of manipulating the court and even suggested that if Zimmerman had the opportunity he would have fled prosecution. In Friday’s motion, O’Mara wrote that Lester’s order was indicative of a bias against Zimmerman, saying that the judge’s statements were “disingenuous, self-serving manipulations.” First you want out of jail, now you want a new judge. This dude sure has a lot of “requests” for a murderer who’s out on bail. What’s next? Smh. Source

‘Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World’: The Reviews Are In!

Cataclysmic comedy starring Keira Knightley and Steve Carell has critics divided. By Kevin P. Sullivan Patton Oswalt and Steve Carrell in “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” Photo: Critics are decidedly split on Lorene Scafaria’s ” Seeking a Friend for the End of the World ” and whether its cataclysmic hijinks are cute or phony. Here is our roundup of reviews for “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.” The Story “At least it’s an ambitious misfire from the filmmaker, screenwriter Lorene Scafaria making a rocky directing debut. The movie ponders what people would do with their final days if the end were a fait accompli . Will anarchy reign or will humanity win out? Will Dodge (Carell) and Penny (Knightley), relative strangers living in the same apartment building, find each other, and love, before the planet and the asteroid collide? Or will they die alone? Lots of potential for a really tragic love story — from here to eternity, literally.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times Steve Carell “The sad sack in question is Dodge, a New York insurance salesman played by Steve Carell with the air of melancholy that serves, in his big-screen roles, as the functional equivalent of a ‘Don’t Call Me Michael Scott’ T-shirt. Mr. Carell has a penchant for wounded and wistful romantic roles. Here, as in ‘Dan in Real Life’ and ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love,’ he is a nebbishy guy so far out of the Darwinian sexual rat race that he becomes irresistible to women.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times Keira Knightley “Penny feels equally underwritten, which leaves the awkward sight of Knightley, evidently still stuck in ‘A Dangerous Method’ mode, straining to appear girl-next-door cute while her facial expressions scream ‘mental patient.’ “— Peter Debruge, Variety The Director “Screenwriter Lorene Scafaria (the similarly fey ‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist’) is over her head in her feature directing debut, unable to establish a consistent tone in a movie that flirts with black comedy, satire, romantic comedy and touchy-feely earnestness without really delivering any of them.” — Lou Lumenick, New York Post The Final Word “What it doesn’t have is a way of making sense of its comic and dramatic strains, together, in the same movie. Carell and Knightley work hard to bring life and truth to each stage of a dawning friendship. By the end, though, Dodge and Penny have had one too many affirming encounters that feel engineered, not lived.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune Check out everything we’ve got on “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics says Benjamin Walker brings ‘backbone’ to an otherwise ‘fake and cartoony’ retelling of the Civil War. By Kevin P. Sullivan Erin Wasson and Benjamin Walker in “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” Photo: ” Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ” reimagines the Civil War as a struggle between the living and the undead with our 16th president as a slayer of the bloodsuckers. It sounds like a fun premise, but critics certainly wish the filmmakers had stuck to the history books. Here is our roundup of what the critics are saying about “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.” The Story “The story opens with young Abe witnessing the murder of his mother by a vampire. He swears vengeance, and some years later is lucky to be getting drunk while standing at a bar next to Henry Sturgess (Dominic Cooper), who coaches him on vampire-killing and explains that it is a high calling, requiring great dedication and avoiding distractions like marriage. Against Henry’s advice, Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) marries Mary Todd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and the story moves quickly to his days in the White House, where he discovers that the vampires are fighting on the side of the South.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times Benjamin Walker “He lucked out big time nabbing Benjamin Walker to play Lincoln from 8 to 80 (not exactly, but you get my point). Walker, 30, was a dick-swinging smash on Broadway in the 2010 musical ‘Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,’ playing Old Hickory as a genocidal horror in sexy pants. Walker brings backbone and flashes of humor to the guy on the five-dollar bill.” — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone The Direction “To stand a chance of pulling this off on film, you need wit and a deft touch, and, boy, is Timur Bekmambetov the wrong man for the job. (Tim Burton, who produced, would have been the better choice.) The director came out of Russia some years back with a pair of showy fantasy thrillers, ‘Night Watch’ and ‘Day Watch,’ and has since made the Angelina Jolie shoot-em-up ‘Wanted.’ Bekmambetov’s filmmaking style manages to be both frantic and ponderous, and he has the humor of a nightclub bouncer.” — Ty Burr, The Boston Globe The Script “Adapting his own richly embroidered novel, which is a lot more fun than the movie, Seth Grahame-Smith (who also wrote ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’) strips his book for parts and ditches the most interesting cockamamie detail and context.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune The Final Word “Unfortunately, director Timur Bekmambetov and writer Seth Grahame-Smith, adapting his own best-selling novel, take this concept entirely too seriously. What ideally might have been playful and knowing is instead uptight and dreary, with a visual scheme that’s so fake and cartoony, it depletes the film of any sense of danger.” — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press Check out everything we’ve got on ” Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. ” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Snitch Murdered: N.O. Man Gets Shot And Killed Right After TV Show Airs His Snitching Episode! [Video]

New Orleans Man Murdered Right After Show Airs Showing Him Snitching Even his friends in the hood know better than being bare faced on TV talking greasy like Brice Parker did. Shortly after a show aired showing a drug bust in his home and him snitching… Brice was murdered: “A Mid-City man is dead after being killed inside his residence Tuesday morning, but it wasn’t the only brush he’s had with crime at his home. That home was also featured on national television hours earlier in a previously recorded drug bust. The bust at 325 North Miro Street earlier this year is what aired on Spike TV’s “Undercover Stings” Monday night, and that address also belonged to Brice Parker, who was killed in the Mid-City home. New Orleans Police say they are trying to find Parker’s killer. Neighbors and friends of Parker, tell WGNO News the 45-year-old’s on-air dialogue with police could have come back to haunt him this morning. “He was telling them where the man had drugs on him and where (the drugs were) hid,” said an anonymous woman, who says she is was a friend of Parker’s. “He said he just got off of a charge, or something and he couldn’t go back to jail. I heard it on TV”, she said. The NOPD couldn’t say whether they thought the murder had any connection to the drug bust months ago or the show’s airing of it Monday night. Neighbors said the bust took place in January, a claim the NOPD couldn’t confirm. A request for comment is in to the producers of “Undercover Stings”. According to Spike TV’s website, the show airs Monday nights from 9 to 10PM, and then again two hours later. Brice Parker was killed at 1AM Tuesday. Anyone with information on his murder is urged to call Crimestoppers at 822-1111. He got caught snitching on National TV two hours later hes dead Its sad man police dont care about people’s safety.” Turn the page for the report and for Brice’s friends saying they know why he was killed.

Ian Somerhalder Continues Push For Fifty Shades of Grey Role

Ian Somerhalder is not only interested in the role of Christian in Fifty Shades of Grey, he’s progressed to lobbying for it … and recruiting writers. The Vampire Diaries star, 33, has made it clear that he’s more than game to turn the controversial novel into an even more controversial movie. Now he’s waging a Twitter campaign of sorts, beginning with writing to Bret Easton Ellis, who he apparently wants to write the script: “Id so love to be Christian Grey w/you & Angelina Jolie. Ive only waited 10 years to do a movie w/u. Im grown up now-no worries.” Ellis ( American Psycho, The Rules of Attraction ) has also been angling to bring the S&M saga of Mr. Grey and Anastasia Steele to the big screen. He wrote to Ian: “I’m glad you’re as excited by the prospect of Fifty Shades of Grey as I am. (though I’ve heard that Angelina is not involved…)” Yes, despite rumors that Angelina Jolie will direct , that’s not happening. Still, Bret and Ian? A formidable pair no doubt. Ellis previously named Alex Pettyfer as his Mr. Grey of choice, but says he might reconsider. “Rereading Fifty Shades of Grey: it’s hard for me to think of Ian Somerhalder as Christian G. because I’ve known him personally for so long.” “I know Ian Somerhalder and how kinky he can be and yes, he’s probably Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey, and he will go all-out for it.” “I’ll call Ian tomorrow for Fifty Shades of Grey …I get it, I get it.” We’re glad you get it Bret … now do it. Your take: Ian in 50 Shades?

James Hetfield of Metallica Records PSA, Offers Reward to Help Find Fan’s Killer

James Hetfield of Metallica filmed a PSA and the band has offered a large reward to the public in solving the murder of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington. Harrington went missing following the heavy metal band’s October 9, 2009, concert in Charlottesville, Va. Her skeletal remains turned up three months later. The PSA is meant to assist the FBI and Virginia State Police in gathering tips that could aid them in identifying a man whom they believe to be a suspect. Metallica PSA “Back in 2010, our band offered $50,000 to help catch the person responsible for murdering Morgan Harrington,” says Hetfield. “Since that time authorities have uncovered new evidence linking her killer to a similar assault to a woman in Virginia.” The video included police sketches. Hetfield pleaded for anyone who may know the individual or have information on the case to contact authorities. “Remember, any information, no matter how small you might think it is, could be that crucial piece investigators need to help solve the case,” he said. There is now a $150,000 reward, including Metallica’s original $50,000. Harrington, a 20-year-old aspiring teacher, was last seen hitchhiking after she left the John Paul Jones Arena where the group was playing that night. Her body was discovered in January 2010. DNA recovered has since been linked to an unknown offender who attacked a woman in Fairfax City in 2005. Anyone with tips can call the Virginia State Police at 434-352-3467.

A “Lil Positivity” Local Kids Raise Money For Family Of 76-Year-Old Gas Station Clerk Set On Fire By Ruthless Robber

This story is crazy, but we’re glad to see the kids coming together to support this woman’s family. Local high school students raised $10,000 for the family of a convenience store clerk known as “Grandma” to many in the Garland community. 76 year old Nancy Harris died Friday night, nearly a week after she was robbed and set on fire at the Fina gas station where she worked in Garland. On Saturday, students from South Garland High School returned to the place of the attack to hold a car wash and raise money for her family. “I was just devastated,” said Dylan Stooksberry, president of the school’s student council. “It’s kind of outlandish that someone would go out of there way to do this. To have that happen to someone who you know, to a face that you know, to a friend it’s devastating.” “It hurts deep down and honestly if someone is going to go out of there way to do something bad like that, I am going to go out of my way to do something nice,” said Stooksberry. The Fina gas station is located just a block from their school. Many students like DJ Valderrama personally knew Harris. “I came in the gas station and she showed me so much kindness by giving me a free drink,” Valderrama said. “Whenever somebody shows you that kind of kindness if affects your life really.” Despite the tragedy that happened at the Fina gas station, many students told NBC 5 that the incident has brought the community closer together. Many hoped this fundraiser will help honor Harris who meant so much to many. “I know Ms. Harris is looking down on us right now, I know she is happy,” said Valderrama. Matthew Johnson is charged with Attempted Capital Murder in connection with this case. Those charges could be upgraded because Ms. Harris has now died. This is so sad. For such a wonderful woman to be killed in such a cruel way is just awful. Photos of the scumbag responsible for the death below: Source
