South Park Creators: ‘We Cannot Stand Behind Censored Muhammad Episode’

When Comedy Central aired last night’s episode of South Park — which, in spite of death threats by radical Muslim groups , picked up where last week’s Muhammad-in-a-bear-costume installment left off — fans were surprised to hear Muhammad’s name bleeped. Were creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone just poking fun at the Muslim culture with some kind of meta-censorship joke? Or was the network taking extra measures to protect themselves in light of the recent threats? Click through for the official explanation from Parker and Stone.

South Park creators killed warns

Muhammad appeared on Wednesday night#39;s episode of the cartoon with his body obscured by a black box, since Muslims consider a physical representation of their prophet to be blasphemous. Last week, the character was believed to be disguised in a bear costume. Comedy Central#39;s “South Park” included a representation of the Prophet Muhammad as a character this week despite a radical Muslim group#39;s warning that its producers could be killed. When that same costume was removed this week, Sa

Kelly Clarkson’s Jakarta Concert Is Banned

According to an Indonesian Islamic organization, the upcoming concert by Kelly Clarkson in Jakarta is banned under Islamic law for it is being sponsored by a tobacco company. The Muhammadiyah is the second largest Islamic organization in the world’s most populous Muslim country. It has recently proclaimed all smoking forbidden under Islam. According to Yanuar Ilyas, head of the organization’s fatwa, there was no smoking fatwa applied to Clarkson’s concert. It is made clear that smoking is forbidden under Islam. Kelly Clarkson’s Jakarta concert is scheduled for April 29 and is being sponsored by L.A. Lights cigarettes. Even the U.S.-based campaign for Tobacco-Free kids also raised objections and asked Clarkson to cancel the sponsorship. According to Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, if the singer pursues with this concert, she is choosing to be a representative and a spokesperson for the tobacco industry and further more, helping them to market cigarettes to children. On the other hand, if she rejects the sponsorship, she can send a strong and powerful message to children not only in Indonesia but all around the world. Indonesia still has to sign on to such ban before it becomes official. Clarkson’s fans also gave their comments on her Facebook page to drop the tobacco sponsorship. According to a posting entitled “Jakarta Mishap”, the singer said that it is going to be a lose-lose situation and that she’s not happy about it, but the damage has been done and she can’t refuse to cancel on her fans. Zimbabwe PM Morgan Tsvangirai rejects gay rights move

“I totally agree with the president,” he said, state media report. Homosexual acts are currently illegal in Zimbabwe. Mr Mugabe once said gays were “worse than pigs and dogs”, sparking international condemnation. Gay rights has become a controversial issue in several African countries in recent months. Mr Tsvangirai joined his long-time rival Mr Mugabe in a power-sharing government a year ago but relations between the two men remain tense…” http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/8588548.stm added by: Mariased

Brick Fatwa Libertarian Also Gets Fat Government Checks

There's this ex-militiaman named Mike Vanderboegh who lives in Alabama and every so often he tells his fellow psychos to go out and break Democratic windows, with bricks. He describes himself as a “Christian libertarian.” He is a Welfare Queen. Even though the Vanderboegh's latest Kristallnacht call was his response to the expansion of government-subsidized medical benefits, and even though Vanderboegh is insured through his wife, guess what? Vanderboegh said he once worked as a warehouse manager but now lives on government disability checks. He said he receives $1,300 a month because of his congestive heart failure, diabetes and hypertension. This is kind of the violent domestic terrorist equivalent of a college libertarian attending a state school. Or the dangerous extremist version of TV's Coach, Craig T. Nelson, telling Glenn Beck: “I've been on food stamps and welfare. Did anybody help me out? No!” If this Vanderboegh guy were a Muslim the FBI would've arrested him in a sting and right now Lindsey Graham would be saying he's too dangerous to try in a civilian court. Instead he is just sitting there collecting government checks and issuing his little internet fatwas. God Bless America. http://gawker.com/5503007/brick-fatwa-libertarian-also-gets-fat-government-check… added by: pjacobs51

Hey, Canada: Ann Coulter Is a Joke [Comedians]

Ann Coulter has made a bit of news lately for barely escaping death at the hands of hundreds of angry Canadian students, of all things. Tonight she actually offered them some good advice: Don’t take her seriously. Hundreds of protesters greeted Ann Coulter when she arrived at the University of Ottawa Tuesday night as part of an extensive bile-spewing tour. Due to “public safety” concerns, Ann’s speech was called off. She talked about this on Bill O’Reilly tonight and made a convincing case for why, even though we support the idea of Ann Coulter not talking as much as possible, it was sort of dumb for these protesters to confront her like she was an important serious person: No, she is a joke. And she said as much on O’Reilly. For example, she explained tonight to O’Reilly that the much-hyped clip of her telling a Muslim student to “take a camel” instead flying was a joke. (This was itself a reference to a previous joke suggestion that Muslims take “flying carpets” instead of airplanes.) A vile, racist joke: But a joke! And when O’Reilly asked her about allegations of hate speech against her, she said (1:03), “Funny that a lot of my most hateful speech are things I never said. Or they’re jokes, that’s what they usually are.” Terrible, racist jokes. And then, she went on to make another one of these jokes: “Seven Imams were threatening to boycott Northwest Airlines… I just pointed out how ironic it was that the Imams were threatening to boycott airlines, and if all Muslims boycotted airlines we could dispense with airport security altogether.” And Bill O’Reilly actually laughed at her, because Ann Coulter’s success is, basically, as a conservative comedian. Without the hilarious jokes that offend Canadians and liberals, she’d just be another one of Fox News’ boring talking blond heads. (Have you noticed how many there are!?) We would like think the country that gave us “Kids in the Hall” and “Trailer Park Boys” has a better sense of humor than Bill O’Reilly. So the next time this hateful banshee swoops down upon your frozen land, we suggest that instead of staging protests fit for a G8 Summit, you engage in the time-honored practice of audiences confronted with hacky, racist comedians everywhere: Get drunk and heckle her off the stage. This is really the only level of discourse appropriate, and it’s a lot more fun! Here’s the full interview:

Appeals for calm after Nigeria sectarian slaughter

JOS, Nigeria — Nigerian troops were patrolling villages near the northern city of Jos Tuesday after the massacre of more than 500 Christians there that sparked international shock and outrage. But survivors of the latest wave of inter-ethnic violence, in which women and children were hacked to death or burned alive in their homes, denounced the authorities for having failed to intervene in time. Relatives of the dead meanwhile attended funerals Monday for the victims of the three-hour orgy of violence in three Christian villages close to the northern city of Jos. Related article: Survivors wail as children, women buried in Nigeria Witnesses have blamed the massacre on members of the mainly Muslim Fulani ethnic group, and according to media reports Muslims villagers were warned two days before attack via text messages to their phones. The security forces said they had detained 95 suspects in the violence. “We have over 500 killed in three villages and the survivors are busy burying their dead,” said state information commissioner Gregory Yenlong. “People were attacked with axes, daggers and cutlasses — many of them children, the aged and pregnant women.” Around 200 people were being treated in hospital, said the information ministry. Much of the violence was centred around the village of Dogo Nahawa, where gangs set fire to straw-thatched mud huts as they went on their rampage. The explosion of violence was just the latest between rival ethnic and religious groups. In January, 326 people died in clashes in and around Jos, according to police although rights activists put the overall toll at more than 550. “The attack is yet another jihad and provocation,” the Plateau State Christian Elders Consultative Forum (PSCEF) said. It had taken the army two hours to react from the time a distress call was put through and “the attackers had finished their job and left”, they added. Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has already sacked his chief security advisor. John Onaiyekan, the archbishop of the capital Abuja, told Vatican Radio that the violence was rooted not in religion but in social, economic and tribal differences. “It is a classic conflict between pastoralists and farmers, except that all the Fulani are Muslims and all the Berom are Christians,” he said. Fulani are mainly nomadic cattle rearers while Beroms are traditionally farmers. Locals said Sunday's attacks were the result of a feud which had been first ignited by a theft of cattle and then fuelled by deadly reprisals. Rights activists also said the slaughter appeared to be revenge for the January attacks, in which mainly Muslims were killed. The Vatican led a wave of outrage with spokesman Federico Lombardi expressing the Roman Catholic Church's “sadness” at the “horrible acts of violence”. UN chief Ban Ki-moon told reporters he was “deeply concerned”, but added: “I appeal to all concerned to exercise maximum restraint. “Nigeria's political and religious leaders should work together to address the underlying causes and to achieve a permanent solution to the crisis in Jos.” US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged “all parties to exercise restraint.” She added: “The Nigerian government should ensure that the perpetrators of acts of violence are brought to justice under the rule of law and that human rights are respected as order is restored.” Survivors said the attackers were able to separate the Fulanis from members of the rival Berom group by chanting 'nagge,' the Fulani word for cattle. Those who failed to respond in the same language were hacked to death. Witnesses said armed gangs had scared people out of their homes by firing into the air but most of the killings were the result of machete attacks. “We were caught unawares… and as we tried to escape, the Fulani who were already waiting slaughtered many of us,” said Dayop Gyang, of Dogo Nahawa. Gbong Gwon Jos, a Muslim resident of Dogo Nahawa, told The Nation daily he received advanced warnings of the attacks. “I got a text message about movement of the people.” Witnesses told Human Rights Watch that some of the attackers were former residents of the villages who had fled previous inter-community conflicts. “I recognized a few of [the attackers'] voices,” one witness told them. Another witness told the group many of the attackers had their heads wrapped in cloth to make it hard to identify them, and that some had cried “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great). Amid continuing tension Monday, Christian youths set upon a Muslim journalist covering one of the mass burials near Jos, an AFP reporter said. Police had to pull him to safety and he needed treatment for a broken nose. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5j7Ka7dhD48QseiCShJ-RhYxI6Exg added by: Toni801

Muslims slaughter Christians in central Nigeria

200 – 500 people, most of them Christians, were slaughtered on Sunday in central Nigeria. Muslims with machetes came from the nearby hills early Sunday morning. Hundreds of villagers, including women and children, were hacked to death or burned in their homes. The city of Jos, in central Nigeria, has become an explosive fault line between the country's Muslim dominated north and predominantly Christian south. The killings occurred in three villages in and around Dogo Nahawa, three miles south of the region's main city of Jos. The violence comes after sectarian killings in January left more than 300 dead, most of them Muslim. Sunday's bloodshed appears to be reprisal attacks. http://www.examiner.com/x-10853-Portland-Humanist-Examiner~y2010m3d8-Religion-Mu… added by: locutus
