Happy Friday! As if heading into the weekend wasn’t already wonderful enough, here comes a casting move that oughta keep you tickled for days: According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Franco is in talks to star in Brian Koppelman and David Levien’s The Game , adapted from Neil Strauss’s dating how-to bestseller, in the role of famed, instantly unforgettable pick-up master Mystery. Hollywood can pretty much drop the mic as Friday closes out, because no other casting move this week can possibly top this. If you weren’t familiar with Mystery (born Erik von Markovik), the expert pick-up artiste whom Strauss learned from to write The Game , well, where do I begin? Co-writer of such helpful tomes as The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women Into Bed and The Pickup Artist: The New and Improved Art of Seduction , Mystery even dallied in reality television in his 2007 VH1 reality series The Pick-Up Artist , in which he taught clueless schlubs how to cast out their lines and reel in the ladies. Also? He looks like this: What? It’s called peacocking! How else can a man stand out from the crowd enough to catch a woman’s eye? Anyway, MGM’s The Game is produced by Chris and Paul Weitz. A woman who was found hanging was determined to be a suicide and a young boy discovered badly injured at the bottom of a staircase died from an accidental fall, authorities said Friday. “These deaths were not the result of any criminal acts,” San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said at a press conference. According to The Hollywood Reporter, MGM will team up with A Solitary Man writer Brian Koppelman and director David Levien to bring Neil Strauss’s dating how-to book The Game to the big screen. Others have tried before to make Strauss’s best-selling pick-up tome into a film, but maybe Koppelman and Levien are the right guys for the job; after all, they gave Michael Douglas a great vehicle playing a skeevy womanizer in A Solitary Man . Maybe they can do the same for magician-turned-pick-up artist Mystery?

At the MTV Movie Awards, J.J. Abrams and Co. gave an exclusive peek at what triggers his flick’s chaotic chain of events. Abrams’ would-be blockbuster “Super 8” — which has included teasers, the super8secret.com site, TV spots and other veiled preview pieces — will officially come to an end this Friday, when the film finally opens nationwide in theaters. Until then, however, we must turn your attention to one more bit of teasery: the exclusive extended “Super 8” clip that was presented during the 2011 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (June 5). Introduced by none other than Abrams, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and stars Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney, this new footage takes us closer to the mystery than we’ve been able to get thus far. The spot opens with six kids (Fanning, Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Gabriel Basso, Ryan Lee and Zach Mills) in the middle of shooting their own movie at a train station, late at night. The sound of an oncoming train disrupts the scene, followed by the blaring of the train whistle, a shot of a truck speeding onto the track and colliding into the train, creating a chaotic explosion, which is captured by the super 8 camera that the kids were using to film their movie. This then sets into motion a series of action sequences, all pegged to the mystery of what prompted the train crash and what classified cargo may or may not have been onboard. There are eerie non-human sound effects, quick cuts of a small town in turmoil over a series of inexplicable events, explosions, military officials trying to decide how to destroy the certain something that is causing all the destruction, and our kid heroes caught up in the middle of it. So, wow. What does it all mean? For those who prefer not to dig too deep into trailers and teaser footage, we respect your willpower and desire to remain unspoiled. While Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch getting knocked around by critics , it’s as good a time as any to remember that he’s the man responsible for bringing Superman back to the big screen for Warner Bros. The renewed enthusiasm for the Man of Steel here in 2011 has led some to wander back to 2006, and the nearly forgotten about Superman Returns from director Bryan Singer. How come that movie failed to connect with audiences? Singer has an idea.
Looks like The Weinstein Co. has discovered a new release date for the Timur Bekmambetov-produced “found footage” moon landing pic Apollo 18 . (In the immortal words of Bob Weinstein, ” Found, baby! “) The bad news is that the mystery project, originally slated to open next month, is moving aaaaall the way from April 22 to Jan. 6, 2012. Yeesh. A last-minute nine month delay doesn’t bode terribly well for any film, but then again, so little is known about Apollo 18 just yet that maybe it doesn’t matter much. At least this gives the Weinsteins plenty of time to add ReleaseQuest™: Apollo 18 to their slate of upcoming video game adaptations . [ Deadline ]
