Race Matters: Over 7,000 Black People Are Murdered Each Year, 94% Of The Time The Murderer Is Black

Black-on-black crime has got to stop… Each year, roughly 7,000 blacks are murdered. Ninety-four percent of the time, the murderer is another black person. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, between 1976 and 2011, there were 279,384 black murder victims. Using the 94 percent figure means that 262,621 were murdered by other blacks. Though blacks are 13 percent of the nation’s population, they account for more than 50 percent of homicide victims. Nationally, black homicide victimization rate is six times that of whites, and in some cities, it’s 22 times that of whites. Coupled with being most of the nation’s homicide victims, blacks are most of the victims of violent personal crimes, such as assault and robbery. The magnitude of this tragic mayhem can be viewed in another light. According to a Tuskegee Institute study, between the years 1882 and 1968, 3,446 blacks were lynched at the hands of whites. Black fatalities during the Korean War (3,075), Vietnam War (7,243) and all wars since 1980 (8,197) come to 18,515, a number that pales in comparison with black loss of life at home. It’s a tragic commentary to be able to say that young black males have a greater chance of reaching maturity on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan than on the streets of Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Oakland, Newark and other cities. A much larger issue is how might we interpret the deafening silence about the day-to-day murder in black communities compared with the national uproar over the killing of Trayvon Martin. Such a response by politicians, civil rights organizations and the mainstream news media could easily be interpreted as “blacks killing other blacks is of little concern, but it’s unacceptable for a white to kill a black person.” There are a few civil rights leaders with a different vision. When President Barack Obama commented about the Trayvon Martin case, T. Willard Fair, president of the Urban League of Greater Miami, told The Daily Caller that “the outrage should be about us killing each other, about black-on-black crime.” He asked rhetorically, “Wouldn’t you think to have 41 people shot (in Chicago) between Friday morning and Monday morning would be much more newsworthy and deserve much more outrage?” Former NAACP leader Pastor C.L. Bryant said the rallies organized by Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson suggest there is an epidemic of “white men killing black young men,” adding: “The epidemic is truly black-on-black crime. The greatest danger to the lives of young black men are young black men.” Not only is there silence about black-on-black crime; there’s silence and concealment about black racist attacks on whites — for example, the recent attacks on two Virginian-Pilot newspaper reporters set upon and beaten by a mob of young blacks. The story wasn’t even covered by their own newspaper. In March, a black mob assaulted, knocked unconscious, disrobed and robbed a white tourist in downtown Baltimore. Black mobs have roamed the streets of Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland, Washington, Los Angeles and other cities, making unprovoked attacks on whites and running off with their belongings. Racist attacks have been against not only whites but also Asians. Such attacks include the San Francisco beating death of an 83-year-old Chinese man, the pushing of a 57-year-old woman off a train platform and the knocking of a 59-year-old Chinese man to the ground, which killed him. For years, Asian school students in New York and Philadelphia have been beaten up by their black classmates and called racist epithets — for example, “Hey, Chinese!” and “Yo, dragon ball!” But that kind of bullying, unlike the bullying of homosexuals, goes unreported and unpunished. Racial demagoguery from the president on down is not in our nation’s best interests, plus it’s dangerous. As my colleague Thomas Sowell recently put it, “if there is anything worse than a one-sided race war, it is a two-sided race war, especially when one of the races outnumbers the other several times over.” Discuss… Source

Jay-Z Says Jay Electronica Album Is ‘Really Close’

‘Him as a lyricist is almost scary. He’s scary good,’ Jigga tells MTV News of his Roc Nation signee. By Rob Markman Jay-Z Photo: MTV News There’s nothing typical about Jay Electronica . In fact, many wondered how the enigmatic MC would fit in with the major-label system at all. Luckily for Jay Elec, his Roc Nation boss Jay-Z is sympathetic to the sensibilities of his creative spirit. “I love that, I want to support that sort of energy. I want people to be creative and not traditional, not just a single [at] this time, this time [and] this time,” Jay-Z told MTV News on Monday, when he was in Philadelphia to announce his two-day Made in America music festival . “You know, he operates at his own time, but the album is really close.” Hov announced in November 2010 that he signed Elect to his budding Roc Nation label. Jigga insisted then that his goal was to “reintroduce magic to hip-hop,” and a year and a half later, the God MC is still excited by the New Orleans rapping wizard. Electronica has long hyped his official debut, Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn), with gleeful tweets, sending periodic updates on the LP’s progress. In March he messaged fans, stating that the wait was finally over and the album was complete, though he made no reference to any release date. “Dear Believers and Patient Supporters. Thank you for your patience and support. The Album will be turned in Tomorrow evening. The wait ends,” he tweeted. Still, when it comes to the “Exhibit C” rapper’s sporadic music-release patterns, there is no telling. In April he dropped “Dear Moleskine.” Before that, in October 2011, it was the Prodigy-assisted “Call of Duty” , and before that, back in November 2010, there was “Shiny Suit Theory.” It’s not a pace traditionally suited for today’s rap race. But Jay-Z assures us that there is an album and that it’s pretty damn good, if he does say so himself. “It’s exactly what it should be — it’s amazing. Him as a lyricist is almost scary. He’s scary good,” Jigga gushed. “I’m doing something to it that’s really untraditional, so we’ll see how it works.” Are you eagerly anticipating Jay Electronica’s debut album? Lady Gaga Cancels Show In Indonesia After Protests

Islamic hard-liners worry that sexy clothes and dancing will corrupt youth. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Lady Gaga’s Twitter Lady Gaga lives to provoke and push the envelope. But not everyone is up for her antics. The “Americano” singer has been forced to cancel her sold-out June 3 “Born This Way Ball” show at the 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia after Islamic hard-liners and conservative lawmakers said her sexy costumes, suggestive dance moves and “vulgar” style could corrupt the nation’s youth. According to the Associated Press , a spokesperson for the national police said on Tuesday (May 15) that the permit for the show has been denied after religious conservatives worried that the concert could undermine the nation’s moral fiber. Some of the critics actually threatened to use physical force to prevent Gaga from getting off her plane. Though Indonesia is a secular state, it has the world’s largest population of Muslims and a small extremist fringe of religious leaders has been more vocal in recent years. “She’s a vulgar singer who wears only panties and a bra when she sings and she stated she is the envoy of the devil’s child and that she will spread satanic teaching,” said Salim Alatas, the Jakarta head of hardline Islamic Defender Front (FPI), according to Reuters . “This is dangerous.” Local police worried that they might not be able to guarantee security at the show and suggested to national police that the permit for what was to be Gaga’s biggest gig on her current Asian tour be pulled. Every seat at the Karno stadium had been sold, with half of them going in the first two hours. The AP reported that permits for shows are typically issued three weeks before concerts in Jakarta, so it is not uncommon for tickets to be sold well ahead of receiving a final permit. Gaga’s Asian tour started last month and the Indonesian flap is not the first bump she’s faced along the road. Gigs in South Korea
were 18-and-over because conservatives in that country also raised objections over the concert’s content. Related Artists Lady Gaga

Rita Ora Throws A ‘Party’: Gin, Glow Sticks And Glitter

‘It’s basically a big party with no judgment,’ Roc Nation singer tells MTV News of the concept for her ‘How We Do’ video. By Rebecca Thomas Rita Ora Photo: MTV News The last time an R&B upstart sampled the Notorious B.I.G. on her debut single, it was the early aughts: Eminem was still cleaning out his closet and Pink and Christina Augilera were pop’s reigning bad girls. Amidst all that, Ashanti ‘s Biggie-sampling “Foolish” scaled the charts and spent 10 weeks at #1 on the way to becoming one of the decade’s most successful singles. Now, 10 years later, Rita Ora is dipping into Mr. Wallace’s vault for her first Stateside release. But whereas the onetime Murder Inc. princess made a breakup ballad for the ages, Ora’s debut single, “How We Do (Party)” — which gets musical inspiration from the late Big’s grimy “Party and Bullsh–” — is as bouncy as a box spring. When the newly minted Roc Nation signee visited the MTV newsroom earlier this month, we drilled her with questions about the tune and its equally effervescent video. “It’s basically a big party with no judgment,” Ora explained of how the visual matches the sentiment of the number, written by Kelly Sheehan and Bonnie McKee. “So there’s a whole bunch of people in there, from a guy who’s got knickers on and who’s colored in paint on his chest to an old man kind of shaking his hips around. … It’s definitely [about embracing] anyone who wants to come to a party,” she laughed. In the clip, the Kosovo-born, West London-raised beauty down a Basquiat-style crown as she presides over a colorful bash that alternates between a lush garden at twilight, a foil-wrapped bedroom and a white-cube space complete with guests using their torsos as paint brushes. ” ‘Cause when the sun sets, baby, on the avenue/ I get that drunk sex feeling, yeah when I’m with you,” she coos to the camera. The infectious tune dares you not to dance along, and last week at New York’s SOB’s, a room full of seen-it-all industry types gathered for a Roc Nation showcase fully rocked out. Ora, for her part, announced the next song in her set by throwing an oversize Coogi sweater (we think Big would have approved!) over her tank. With a red knit cap pulled down over platinum-blond curls, she called to mind a cross between mid-’90s-era Faith Evans (during her courtship with Mr. Wallace, of course) and Gwen Stefani, whom Ora cites as an influence. “I am a huge Notorious B.I.G. fan and I loved his Coogi sweaters and … I found one for 10 pounds actually in a village shop back home,” she told us of the Brooklyn icon’s signature cover-up. The connections to Biggie don’t end there, though. Ora is the latest on a growing roster of acts being groomed by Jay-Z, the Roc Nation mogul and Big’s old Bed-Stuy pal. Back in February, Shawn Carter himself accompanied his new artist, single in hand, to iHeartRadio’s Z100. The video went viral and the Jordan-wearing 21-year-old hasn’t looked back since.
