When Remy and Papoose announced the birth of their daughter on social media, Papoose did mention that the labor had been difficult. Since then, the couple had been very open about using in vitro fertilization to try and have another child. By July, the rapper was announcing her pregnancy as she and Papoose renewed their vows. According to TMZ, Remy Ma is receiving blood transfusions and apparently the surgery was a success. They report that she’s doing well and is expected to be released within the week. And now, after the allegations of sexual abuse and assault lodged against its co-creator Salim Akil , the network has decided to cancel the show. According to Variety , OWN cancelled “Love Is __” just weeks after news broke the Salim Akil had been accused of sexually abusing Amber Dixon Brenner, a woman with whom he allegedly maintained a 10-year-long extramarital affair. Sources claim that Warner Bros. Television, which produces “Love Is __” completed an investigation inspired by the lawsuit Dixon Brenner filed. They found no allegations of misconduct on the OWN series or on “Black Lighting,” the other show Akil created and produces. Up until now, Akil is still in place as the showrunner. Preproduction on the second season of had reportedly already begun. But according to sources, the allegations against Akil “presented a unique challenge for the future of the season, which had been billed as being based on the real-life romance of Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil. Apparently, people at OWN felt the narrative had been “compromised.” As we reported earlier, actor and director Amber Dixon Brenner said that during their ten-year relationship Akil slapped, strangled and forced oral sex on numerous occasions. She claimed that he urinated in her mouth on one occasion, raped her when she complained of sex being too painful and forced her to lick a wall in a parking garage. In addition to the sexual abuse, Dixon Brenner, who is also married, claimed that Akil used portions of a script she’d sent him in “Love Is ___” Mara Brock Akil took to Instagram to share her feelings about the cancellation and said, ” LOVE IS___ I am saddened that this great group of #artists and #storytellers will no longer get to create together on this project in this way. Here’s what we know: Bullying isn’t just mere child’s play for our children. Just last week, we reported that a nine-year-old Alabama girl, McKenzie Adams , committed suicide because she was being teased by her classmates for being Black. To combat the negative effects of bullying against her child, one Georgia mother is using the gift of song to remind her son that he is special and that his life matters. In the viral video below, Briana Hampton can be seen singing Major’s “ Why I Love You ” to comfort her 6-year-old son, Isiah, who is being teased at school for his dark skin. “My son has been bullied at school and kids have been teasing him about his Darkskin. Me and my husband @_latruth always say Son your handsome and those kids are mad their not you,” Hampton wrote in a caption. The 26-year-old mother of three added, “Today I found the perfect song to tell my son how much i love him! I love you Isaiah your handsome and chocolate. The lady’s love chocolate men too. Ain’t that right ladies? #latruth #mrslatruth #thehamptons” Just beautiful! HelloBeautiful sat down with Hampton to talk about what prompted this beautiful video, where she believes this type of racist bullying comes from and what parents can do to protect their children. HelloBeautiful: What was going on with your son to prompt you to make this video? Briana Hampton: Ever since he’s been going to this new school, which is predominately white, I noticed that he was always complaining about not having any friends. I am not sure what started it, but I kept telling him, “Oh you’re going to make friends, Isiah.” After that, I would ask him how things were going at school and he said everything was fine, but I knew something was going on. He was always so jolly and happy and then things started to change. HB: What was the biggest thing that alarmed you about your son’s behavior? BH: He has an iPhone and I would take all these pictures of him on it, and then one day I noticed that all the photos of him were gone and were replaced with pictures of white boys. So I asked him “Isaiah, where are all the pictures of you? Why are these pictures in here?” He said to me that he didn’t want to see pictures of himself and that he wanted to be like the white boys and that white people were cooler than him. He also told me that his skin and hair were ugly and that he wanted to change his skin color. HB: That must have been heartbreaking. BH: It was. He’s only in kindergarten and he’s never said anything like that before. So I told him, “Isiah, you are beautiful and there is nothing wrong with how you look.” Soon after, I went to the school and spoke to the teachers and asked them to do a buddy program, and they said they would look into it, but I don’t think it’s working, because he is still saying that he doesn’t have any friends. I tried to ask who were the people doing this, was it Black kids, was it white kids, who was it. He is so little, he tells me that he doesn’t see color. That, and he doesn’t want to tell me who it is exactly. But here’s what I know is that racism is taught at home. These children are learning this from their parents, who because Trump’s in office, their attitude is “ we can be racist ’cause he gets away with it, so i can too.” That, and hurt kids hurt other kids. Bullying starts at home too. HB: Completely. So to combat this racism towards your son, you made this video? BH: Yes. I have three kids, and I wanted to do something for Isiah and have some one on one time with him to show him how much I love him. And to show him that he is beautiful in his own skin. HB: The video has now gone viral and has gotten such a beautiful response. Did you ever expect it would be received like this? BH: Not at all [Laughs.] I didn’t even think my son would respond with crying. I just thought he would laugh. But people have been so great and encouraging. I’ve been showing Isiah all of their comments and videos of other dark skin Black men like LeBron James and Michael Jordan to show them how confident they are with themselves. I definitely think he had a breakthrough. HB: That’s so encouraging to hear. BH: Thank you. I just knew that I had to do something. I recently read that story of that little girl who killed herself and I saw that bullying is real. And to see my own son, depressed at six-years-old, I couldn’t sit back and do nothing. It’s a parents job to build their children up, that has to start at home. For us, the next steps for my husband and I are working with other parents and teachers to create an anti-bullying campaign at the school to raise awareness. HB: What’s your advice for parents whose children are being bullied? BH: First, I would say, keep asking your kids questions about their day and how things are going—and make sure you ask them different types of questions. Also, make sure to get involved in their school lives, pop up at their school, sit in the classrooms and have meetings with their teachers. Our children are at school more than they are with you during the day, so you need to know what is going on. I know as parents we work a lot and work hard, but it’s important that e veryday when we come home from work, we set aside an hour and spend time with our children. They need our love and attention. Most importantly, pay attention to your child’s behavior, especially if they were happy before and now they don’t want to talk to you or they just want to isolate themselves and spend time alone. You can tell when someone’s energy us off and when it’s changing. If you can tell when your spouse’s energy change, your child isn’t any different. HB: Final thoughts on what we can do to stop racist bullying? BH: I just want people to know that like Isiah said, it’s not all about color. We are all people and in order for us to be union, we have to stop looking at what race we are, stop putting each other down and build each other up. He’s taken to social media to blame everyone else for the demise of his marriage, told the world how much he misses her and even recently made a video pleading her to come back and let him spend the holidays with his family. But on Saturday night, he took his public display of nonsense to an entirely new level. During her performance at Los Angeles’ Rolling Loud Festival, the Migos rapper decided to hijack Cardi B during her performance to ask for forgiveness. With a loud and tacky flower arrangement that read “TAKE ME BACK CARDI,” Offset told his wife, “I just want to tell you I’m sorry. You’re my best friend in the world. Whatever I got to do to show I love you, I’ll do.” “I just wanna tell you I’m sorry bruh,” he said. “And furthermore, I love you.” Sigh…who is he calling “bruh”? What Offset did was manipulative, toxic and downright abusive. Cardi B has made it clear that she no longer wants to be with this man, has “fallen out of love” with him and wants to move on with her life. For folks with common sense, this is understandable given that Offset has cheated on her multiple times during the course of their relationship. But Offset isn’t trying to hear that. He refuses to leave her alone and learn from his mistakes. So, he took it upon himself to steal her moment, which was monumental given that Cardi was the first female headliner in Rolling Loud’s 3-year-history. He decided that his needs trumped her feelings, personal space and spotlight. So he came to her job uninvited, ambushing and coercing her in front of thousands of people, thinking she would crumble under the pressure of not wanting to bruise a Black man’s ego in public and essentially take him back. If this isn’t the definition of toxic masculinity, I don’t know what is. Sadly, he didn’t do this all by himself. For the complicit folks at Rolling Loud who knew about this before hand—and even bragged about it on Twitter—and the people close to Cardi who were in on the stunt and didn’t tell her ahead of time, they all need their asses beat too. This did not have to happen in public. Be clear: My critique isn’t about me stanning. I’ve never been a Cardi B fan—I’m still confused at all her Grammy nominations and am often turned off by her online and in-person behavior , especially that NYFW nonsense with Nicki Minaj a few months back. Not to mention, her colorism and past homophobic and transphobic remarks. But what I do appreciate is her come-up story, her resilience and watching her grow as a woman, a rapper and a mother. I want Cardi to be happy, successful and revel in the fact that she knows her worth. But perhaps, that’s the problem. Perhaps that’s why philandering goons like T.I. , The Game , Kirk Frost and 50 Cent continue to berate the 26-year-old for “breaking up her family,” while downplaying the severity that having sex with other women can have on a marriage. Could you imagine if Cardi B would have cheated on Offset? These same “men” would never be fighting this hard for this relationship to work. But I digress. See, folks hate when Black women stick up for themselves, have standards and are empowered in their decisions. In addition, folks routinely shame Black women who refuse to allow their relationships to be solely based on pain, one-sided sacrifice, trauma and infidelity. It literally makes folks’ blood boil to see Black women unbossed, unbothered and happy on their own terms—just ask Ciara . In the end, if Cardi takes Offset back, that’s her own business and I promise not to judge. And while she has asked for folks to not “bash him,” it’s important that we continue to hold this man—and other Black men like him— accountable, an act that too often feels like a rarity instead of the norm. It’s also important that we listen to Black women and remind them that despite what the world may tell them, they are the experts of their own lives and know what’s best for them and their families. Finally, if anything, it’s important for us to use Offset’s behavior as a teachable moment to educate brothas on why this is unacceptable, what healthy relationships and boundaries actually look like, and why Black women are not garbage bags to dump your trashy trifling baggage into. We’re tired of carrying that load, and frankly, we’re entitled to so much better.
