The Muppets Back Foo Fighters, Nickelback In Musical March Madness

Kermit the Frog and Walter also begin write-in campaign for ‘Muppet Show’ faves Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Vote now! By James Montgomery, with reporting by Josh Wigler Walter and Kermit Photo: MTV News The Muppets might not strike you as a particularly hoops-savvy bunch, until you realize they’ve hung out with everyone from Dr. J to Rebecca Lobo and just did a movie with Jason Segel, who is, like, 7 feet tall and can definitely dunk. So obviously, when Kermit the Frog and his pal Walter stopped by the MTV Newsroom earlier this week, we had to get their take on our ongoing Musical March Madness tournament, which pits the 64 biggest bands against one another in a bracket battle for ultimate superiority … just like the actual NCAA basketball tournament, only with more Coheed and Cambria. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! Voting in all first-round MMM matchups runs until Sunday at midnight ET, so there’s still time to help guide your favorites to victory. But for all you last-minute voters out there, here are Kermit’s and Walter’s picks to take it all in this year’s tournament. “I would have to obviously say Green Day, they’re one of my favorite bands,” Kermit said. “My Morning Jacket I love, because they did an album we did called the Green album, and also, I have to say, there’s nothing like a good round of Nickelback to bring out the fierceness in the frog. But really, my favorite is the Foo Fighters, because I love to say ‘Foo.’ ” He really does. Also, who knew Kermit was a Nickelback fan? And while most of Kermit’s picks seem like locks to advance in the tournament (except for the top-seeded Foos, who are getting all they can handle from #16, James Durbin), Walter is taking some risks, picking upset-focused up-and-comers and veteran squads to advance. “I have to go with Florence and the Machine, because they were on ‘Saturday Night Live’ when we hosted with Jason … she’s got a killer voice,” he said. “I also like that song ‘What the Water Gave Me,’ but I hope she’s not talking about, like, giardia or something like that, that terrible bacteria parasite … that’s what the water gave me once. “I love the classics, I’m afraid. I like Van Halen, I gotta pick Van Halen,” he continued. “Oh, and of course, Mumford and Sons. Did you know their frontman was formerly the Amazing Mumford on ‘Sesame Street’? True story.” Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! We did not know that. Of course, Walter wasn’t content to just pick underdogs. He decided to launch an impromptu write-in campaign to get another “Muppet” fave in the race for Musical March Madness. “Can I do a write-in?” he asked. “I was a little disappointed in MTV [for not including] Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem . That is my number-one choice. That’s who I’d pick to win it.” MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament is under way! Voting in the first round runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 18, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Videos Musical March Madness Returns! Black Keys, My Chemical Romance Lead Musical March Madness’ Midwest

U2, Metallica, Nickelback and more battle it out in a heavyweight region. Voting in all first-round matchups is now live! By James Montgomery U2’s Bono and Dick Vitale Photo: Getty Images MTV’s third-annual Musical March Madness tournament tipped off Monday, with voting opening in all first-round matchups. But with a bracket busting with bands — 64 in all, each battling to hoist the championship trophy when the tournament ends April 3 — we realize that choosing your favorites in each contest can be a daunting task (unless your favorite happens to be Tokio Hotel — they’re having no problem racking up the votes). After all, sometimes even the selection committee has a difficult time distinguishing between AWOLNATION and Five Finger Death Punch. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! So with first-round voting open until Sunday (polls close at midnight ET), we’re going to spend the next few days breaking down each Musical March Madness region, starting with the mighty, meaty Midwest, a bracket loaded with meat-and-potatoes rock acts … and, uh, Bon Iver, too. Can the top-seeded Black Keys run the table? Will MMM superpowers My Chemical Romance continue their tradition of deep tournament runs? Or, like last year, will the Midwest go to an upset-minded underdog, like Chevelle or Sum 41? Read on for our picks in each opening-round tilt. #1 The Black Keys vs. #16 AWOLNATION: On the surface, the Keys should win this one with ease. Then again, as any MMM historian will surely tell you, the three-year history of the tournament is littered with jaw-dropping upsets (like #16 the Hold Steady knocking off #1 Nickelback in 2010, or 16th-seeded Sum 41 dumping #1 Arcade Fire last year). Still, with so much momentum — back-to-back breakout albums, a sold-out arena U.S. arena tour — we like Auerbach and Carney over a very game Aaron Bruno. #2 Bon Iver vs. #15 Sum 41: The pride of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, faces off against the pride of Ajax, Ontario, in this opening-round barn-burner. Bon Iver was a surprise second seed in the Midwest (geography was a determining factor, as always), while one could argue that, based on last year’s MMM run alone, Sum 41 should be way higher than a 15 seed. Bad news for the bearded one, we’re taking tourney-tested Sum 41 for the upset. #3 Pearl Jam vs. #14 Five Finger Death Punch: It’s rock legends versus fast-rising, faster-playing metallers here, and though Pearl Jam currently hold a rather-sizeable lead so far, we’re not writing off Five Finger Death Punch just yet. Hard-rock bands tend to do surprisingly well in MMM (they’re fans vote equally hard), which is why, we think by week’s end, it’ll be the Death Punch who roll to round two. #4 U2 vs. #13 Modest Mouse: Last year, U2 were a surprise early exit, losing to eventual champs Green Day in round two, while Modest Mouse have never made it out of the first round of the tourney. Based on that alone, we’re taking Bono and Co. here, though, after one day of voting, this one is still pretty close. #5 My Chemical Romance vs. #12 Death Cab for Cutie: MCR are the only band in MMM history to make the Final Four twice, including a heartbreaking championship-game loss to Coheed and Cambria in 2010. Death Cab? Uh, yeah … they’ve been to the second round. Once. This one won’t even be close: MCR are going far in this tourney. #6 Kid Rock vs. #11 Chevelle: It’s Michigan versus Illinois in this first-round barnburner, which could have been an actual NCAA tournament matchup if Illinois didn’t suck so bad this year. Kid Rock has been getting in touch with his Seger side in recent years, while Chevelle roared back in 2011 with the (actually pretty great) Hats Off to the Bull , and so far, it’s the rockers who hold a commanding lead over the Kid. Can they hold on? We’ll say they do, and advance to the second round. #7 Metallica vs. #10 Guns N’ Roses: A true clash of the titans, this one could go either way (though it hopefully won’t end like the pair’s 1992 Montreal show did, with both James Hetfield and the city set on fire). Understandably, this one is currently the closest matchup in the entire tournament, with the Gunners holding a .02 percent edge. There’s a whole week still to go, but this one might be too close to call. #8 Nickelback vs. #9 Rise Against!: A total style clash in every conceivable way, Rise Against! jumped out to an early lead, but thanks to some feverish tweeting , Nickelback have swung things in their favor. It’s still close, but we think Kroeger and Co. pull it out — if only because we suspect a Black Keys/Nickelback second-rounder will be, uh, interesting . MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament is underway! Voting in the first round runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 18, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. Evanescence, Matt Pinfield Remember 1991: When Rock Rocked

Pearl Jam’s Ten, Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger celebrate 20th anniversary along with Nirvana’s Nevermind. By James Montgomery Pearl Jam’s Ten Photo: Epic As the music world gears up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nirvana ‘s Nevermind, it’s also bears mention that there were no shortage of other magical, massive and equally mythological albums that hit stores in 1991. To celebrate the year when rock truly rocked, MTV News has been asking some of today’s biggest acts (everyone from Blink-182 to DJ Skrillex) to remember their favorite albums from that truly epic year. So far, we’ve looked back at Metallica’s Black Album, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Dinosaur Jr.’s Green Mind, My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless and Slint’s Spiderland. And now, a couple of professional music fans reminisce about two other game-changing 1991 releases: Pearl Jam ‘s Ten and Soundgarden ‘s Badmotorfinger : Pearl Jam, Ten A little more than a year after they formed from the ashes of Seattle’s Mother Love Bone — with an assist from a gas station attendant/surfer from San Diego — Pearl Jam roared to life with Ten, an album that not only ranks as a cornerstone of American rock, but one of the most successful debuts of all time. Few bands went from relative obscurity to international superstardom with the speed of Pearl Jam, a breakneck pace seemingly predicted on tracks like “Once” and “Why Go.” Of course, Eddie Vedder’s contemplative, everyman (yet otherworldly) ruminations on “Black” and “Jeremy” added depth and breadth to the sonic squall. A classic in every sense of the term, Ten remains Pearl Jam’s most popular release to this day, and the fact that the band is still going strong proves that not all overnight success stories have to come with an unhappy ending. Also, rather indirectly, it remains the greatest thing Mookie Blaylock has ever been (loosely) associated with, even better than Oklahoma’s run to the 1988 NCAA title game. As Remembered by Amy Lee, Evanescence : “We moved from Rockford, Illinois, to Little Rock, Arkansas, when I was 13. It was really hard, you know, right at the wrong age, didn’t have any friends, didn’t know anyone, moved to a new school. It was real preppy, didn’t fit in … all that classic stuff. And, at the same time, there was some music that I was addicted to, like, needed it, and Pearl Jam’s Ten was one of those records. I had the tape … and I would listen to it, turn it over, listen to the whole other side, start it over again. All night. Like, I could just lie in bed and cry or think … that was the outlet. I love that record. I love ‘Black,’ that song’s just so totally beautiful, I could listen to that one over and over. ‘Alive,’ ‘Jeremy,’ probably the biggest song on the record for me. That video, that kind of horrifying, childlike experience, it completely moved me and touched me. That had to be the song for me. I wore that tape out, completely. And, I remember, the [liner] had them with their hands raised, together, and I had that on my wall. … They felt like I felt, and their music described things I couldn’t say out loud. And that idea and revelation was so inspiring to me, like, I wanted to live inside the songs.” Soundgarden, Badmotorfinger They’d break through to the big time with the follow-up, 1994’s Superunknown, but to the purists, Badmotorfinger remains Soundgarden’s crowning achievement, a sludgy, leaden thing that channeled the bludgeon of Black Sabbath and the keening vocal pyrotechnics of a million hair-metal frontmen. And, in the process, the band created an album that was heavily indebted to the past, while still managing to forge new territory that left their grunge contemporaries (and contemporary critics) grasping at straws. Pounding, primal, precise … all the adjectives apply here, and on songs like “Rusty Cage,” “Outshined” and “Jesus Christ Pose,” they often apply at the same time. As Remembered by Matt Pinfield, host of MTV2’s “120 Minutes” : ” Badmotorfinger is such a great record, and it says a lot about the band and their songwriting, just the crazy time signatures on tracks like ‘Rusty Cage’ and ‘Jesus Christ Pose’ — it took balls to write a song and do a video like ‘Jesus Christ Pose’ back in the day — but also, if you look at how songs like ‘Outshined’ have lasted, how incredible they are as a band. Chris Cornell, one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time, Kim Thayil, one of the most incredible guitar players, just dirty, sludgy, tuned-down. Ben Shepherd, a powerful bass player who plays rhythm with his bass, and, of course, Matt Cameron, one of the greatest drummers … still going strong, looks as young as he did then, playing with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. So, I love Badmotorfinger. It’s one of the greatest albums in a year that had so many really great albums.” Share your favorite memories of 1991’s seminal albums in the comments below! Rupert Grint Talks ‘Harry Potter’ World Cup Chances

‘I’m still in it? No way!,’ actor tells MTV News. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Rupert Grint Photo: MTV News Forget the NCAA Tournament: This is the bracket to end all brackets. For weeks, Harry Potter fans — in preparation for the saga’s final installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” opening in theaters on Friday — have been participating in our “Harry Potter” World Cup , which will determine who is the best character in the series, as chosen by you. And after thousands of votes and some major upsets in just about every seed (Harry’s out!), we are down to the Final Four . There’s the headstrong Hermione Granger vs. the redemptive Severus Snape and the rogue Sirius vs. the beloved Ron Weasley. MTV’s own Josh Horowitz announced the exciting news to Mr. Weasley himself, Rupert Grint , to which the actor happily responded, “I’m still in it? No way!” While Grint isn’t sure of his chances of taking the whole Cup should he end up going against Hermione or Severus in the final round (“I don’t think I could do that — I mean, Snape is a great character,” he told us), the 22-year-old is honored simply to have made it this far. “It’s amazing. It’s quite touching really,” Grint said of the “Potter” and, more specifically, Ron Weasley fans. See the full bracket and vote! In fact, the Cup has given the “Potter” cast the chance to see how relentlessly devoted the fans are to the series and the characters. “It’s the only time you’re kind of aware of how important these films are to people,” said Grint of events like the Cup or premieres, where devotees wait out for days and scream out for their favorite stars. While rabid fanbases may scare off some stars of popular sagas, Grint only has the fondest feelings for those who have made the “Harry Potter” films part of their lives for the past decade. As he put it to MTV News, “It’s great. I’m going to miss it all, really.” Join the club. “Harry Potter” fans will get the chance to determine whether Ron Weasley will go to the next round as voting for the Final Four continues through midnight. Then, the final showdown in the World Cup starts immediately at 12:01 a.m. ET on Monday, July 11. The winner of the “Harry Potter” World Cup will be announced later Monday evening during MTV’s live stream of the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” red-carpet premiere in New York. You Can’t Be Serious…Kemba Walker Admits To Just Recently Reading His First Full Book Ever!!

We appreciate your honesty sir, but you certainly are an ignorant mickiefickie… New York – UConn’s star guard concedes that he’s only read one book cover-to-cover in his entire life… and yet somehow managed to complete college in three years. Earlier this month, Kemba Walker led the University of Connecticut Huskies to victory in the NCAA men’s basketball championship. The hardworking star guard is now slated to go pro, and is expected to earn a degree after just three years at UConn. Given the number of college stars who turn pro without graduating, Walker’s academic commitment had been widely celebrated… until now. In a Sports Illustrated interview, the 20-year-old made a “ridiculous” admission: He’s just finished his first book, William C. Rhoden’s Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete. “That’s true,” Walker told SI. “You can write that. It is the first book I’ve ever read.” What does Walker’s rather short reading list say about the state of college athletics? This is unbelievable: “How does anyone graduate from a Division I university — in three years, no less! — without ever finishing a single book in his life?” asks Dashiell Bennett at Business Insider. Simply remarkable. But, hey, at least the one book he has read probably has a chapter on education, or lack thereof, in college athletics. It shows just how entitled college athletes are: “I’m sick of pundits saying these kids should be paid on top of being given, oh, just a couple hundred thousand dollars in scholarship money,” says Matt Kiebus at Death + Taxes. Not only do college athletes get “an invaluable college education for free,” they also, it seems, have to put in a fraction of the academic effort as their peers. Who else but a celebrated athlete could skate through college without reading a book? Teachers and coaches are also complicit: “Walker’s teachers and coaches — both in high school and college — had to have been well aware of any academic shortcomings, but all were ignored in order for these schools to have a winning team,” says Hayat Mohamed at The Root. This is “seriously wrong,” and Walker alone is not to blame. “He was clearly robbed of a true education,” and now, “yet another undereducated black man joins the league — way to go, NBA.” Let it be known that there is nothing cool about this at all. Everyone doesn’t have the same thirst for reading and we understand that, but to be 20 years old and only read one book in your life is just plain sad. Get it together please. Source

LeAnn Rimes Looks REALLY Thin, Lambasts Haters

LeAnn Rimes caught considerable flak for her appearance at the NCAA title game last night, and did not mince words firing back at critics on Twitter. Rimes, who recently called a truce with Brandi Glanville , now has other detractors to focus on – those who said she’s looking way too thin lately. “To those who have to turn to other’s lives and judge with no real knowledge of how anyone lives, you can you know what!” she posted Tuesday. Rimes performing the National Anthem in Houston last night . Responding to a “fan” who asked if she starves herself: “dear lord! I do not workout too much nor do I starve myself. I’m over this and moving on.” Overall, she says it’s “Always an honor to honor our country. Very proud of last night. Still on a bit of a high. Thx you all fir such kind kind words.” What do you think: LeAnn is looking really …
