Ben Seewald: Continuing to Support Black Lives Matter in Defiance of the Duggars

If you watched this week’s episode of Counting On , you bore witness to a rather awkward encounter between Jinger Duggar and her brothers-in-law, Ben Seewald and Derick Dillard. In the scene, Ben and Derick advised Jinger on proper courtship protocol. Because apparently in Duggar Land, there’s nothing weird about two dudes telling their wives’ adult sister how far she should go with her boyfriend: Jinger Duggar Gets Courtship Rules Refresher Anyway, the conversation served as a reminder of just how deeply the Duggar kids (and their spouses) subscribe to the belief system handed down to them by patriarch Jim Bob. Interestingly, however, in the weeks between the when that episode was filmed and when it aired, Ben Seewald hinted that he may not be buying everything that his father-in-law is selling. On his social media pages, Seewald expressed his support for Colin Kaepernick , the San Francisco 49ers QB who sparked a national dialogue about race and police violence when he chose to take a knee instead of standing during performances of the national anthem prior to his team’s games. Despite harsh criticism from commenters on his Instagram page, Ben has been unwavering in his support of Kaepernick and the Black Lives Matter movement. Following the police shooting of Terrence Crutcher last month, Seewald drew further flak for retweeting a minister who begged for unity and compassion for Crutcher’s family: But while he’s been more vocal than ever in recent weeks, Ben has been sensitive to the ongoing problem of police violence in America going at least as far back as the Ferguson protests of 2014. It was around that time that Seewald interviewed the socially conscious rapper Flame for a video on his YouTube channel: Ben Seewald on Racial Unrest For once, fans of Counting On and critics of the Duggars have something in common, as both have expressed their surprise (pleasant or otherwise) over the realization that Ben is so politically aware. Interviewing a rapper of any political stripe is a controversial move for a member of the extended Duggar clan, as the family famously rejects all forms of modern music, even rock with Christian-themed lyrics. Given the amount of power Jim Bob wields in his family many thought he would have a talk with Ben about expressing views that run counter to those of the Duggars and their fan base. But either that never happened, or Ben is more strong-willed than we thought, as earlier this week, the 21-year-old father of one posted a link to this article which every recent incident in which police killed a black man, and urges Christians to act. View Slideshow: Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald Photos It’s a bold move by Ben, and it could prove to be an important one. Love ’em or hate ’em, the Duggars have a massive audience for their every musing.

Ben Seewald: Defying the Duggars & Supporting Colin Kaepernick?

As you’ve probably heard, San Francisco 49ers quarterback  Colin Kaepernick has been kneeling for the national anthem prior to his team’s games as a means of protesting police violence against people of color. Though the spirit of his protest quickly spread to throughout the NFL and is now impacting other sports , Kaepernick’s decision has been unpopular with some fans, particularly folks with more right-wing political leanings – like the members of the Duggar family. But now it looks like one Duggar insider might be breaking with the rest of the Counting On clan when it comes to matters related to Kaepernick, the police, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Ben Seewald doesn’t have a reputation as the most socially conscious reality star on television, but it seems that the 21-year-old has been affected by the recent wave of fatal shootings perpetrated by police officers. Sources close to the family say that the husband of Jessa Duggar has broken with his in-laws by expressing support for Kaepernick and concern for the communities that have been affected by police violence. Seewald has mostly kept these views from fans, but he’s also given subtle indications on social media that he’s more left-leaning in his political beliefs than the ultra-conservative Duggars: Earlier this week, Ben re-tweeted evangelical preacher Russell Moore, who stated that “the situation has to change” regarding police violence toward African-Americans. And it’s far from the first time that Ben has demonstrated an awareness of the problem of systemic racism in America. Ben Seewald on Racial Unrest That’s Ben interviewing the rapper Flame about protests and police violence earlier this year. Seewald admits that he knows little about the subject, but expresses a willingness to learn, which is certainly a step in the right direction. Ben seems to be a political centrist on social issues, but his moderate beliefs put him far to the left of his famous in-laws. And not surprisingly, they’ve earned him condemnation from the family’s evangelical fans. Earlier this month, Seewald posted a photo of President Obama on his Instagram page with the following caption: “Be in prayer for president Obama: ‘Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. “‘For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.'” Naturally, his comments section exploded in criticism, with numerous followers declaring their intention to stop following Ben on social media and boycott his family’s show. Ben responded with a biblical clapback: “Before calling a leader (or anyone else) by a derogatory term, consider this: ‘Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.’ – 1 Peter 2:17.” Pretty enlightened stuff, especially coming from a member of the Duggar clan. Of course, this is the same guy who once blamed racism on evolution , so he still has a long way to go. Anyway, one member of the extended Duggar-verse who likely won’t be sitting next to Ben this Thanksgiving is Jill Duggar’s mother-in-law, Cathy Dillard, who recently tweeted: “Not watching NFL, till they fire those who refuse to honor this country. No McDonalds either! @NFL @McDonalds – I will miss McDonalds. ” No word on what McDonald’s has to do with any of this.

Gary Glasberg Dies; NCIS Creator Was 50

Gary Glasberg, a giant in the world of television, passed away on Wednesday of unknown causes. He was 50 years old. CBS confirmed the news to Variety, saying Glasberg died in his sleep. He also created its spinoff, NCIS: New Orleans, which premiered in 2014 and worked as a producer on NCIS: Los Angeles. Stunned by the news, the NCIS cast released the following statement on Twitter in response to Glasberg’s passing: “Gary was our rock, our cheerleader, our team captain. He inspired us with his leadership, his creative instincts and keen insight. “NCIS will not be the same without him, and each of us will miss his smiling face and unwavering humor, which lifted us every day.” Glasberg worked on award-winning shows for seven years. Glasberg began his TV career in 1993, penning episodes of Rugrats and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. In 2001, he wrote what would be the first of multiple scripts for NBC’s Crossing Jordan, on which he eventually was named a co-producer. The San Franciso 49ers QB visited Castlemont High School school in Oakland, California on Friday night. The players and coaches organized a “die in,” where the players laid with their backs on the ground and their hands in the air during the national anthem. This isn’t the first time team the team has protested during the national anthem though. A week prior to Kaepernick’s visit the team kneeled down with their fists raised in the air before the game. You make a difference. This matters. Everything you do matters. Look out for one another, lift each other up. That’s what this is all about. I had to come support y’all, because the same way y’all took a stand and stood with me, I had to come out here and stand with y’all. So I appreciate what y’all did. I love y’all. Y’all my brothers — I’m here with you.” Do you agree with the high school’s method of protest? What do you think of so many high school football players and coaches taking to Kaepernick’s message?

Ashley Williams Reveals Miscarriage, Sends Message to Women Everywhere

Ashley Williams has opened up about something as personal as it gets for women: A miscarriage. In a detailed and emotional essay for The Human Development Project, The Jim Gaffigan Show star talks with fans about how she found out she miscarried during a trip at Whole Foods with her son Gus, who was nearly two years old at the time. Williams also delves into what transpired after this tragic incident. She says she realized a great deal about herself as a result of the miscarriage and has a message for others who have suffered the same experience but felt they couldn’t discuss it. “My (still bloated) gut feeling is that something even more painful silences us  – the fear that we, as women, are failures,” writes Williams, who miscarried eight weeks into her second pregnancy. “Procreation, the driving purpose in our constructed notion of womanhood, is broken by this sudden trauma.” What would the 37-year old like to tell other women in her situation? “You are not broken. You did nothing wrong. You are strong, you are brave, and there is hope.” That feels worth repeating, in old: You are not broken. You did nothing wrong. You are strong, you are brave, and there is hope. In her moving essay, the actress – who played one of Ted Mosby’s major love interests on How I Met Your Mother – explains that she was shocked to learn she isn’t alone. Not by a long shot. Most of her friends have also suffered a miscarriage. “Medical confirmations of the lost pregnancy from OBs, chiropractors, and my acupuncturist use jargon that feeds more self-sabotaging thoughts that I am deficient,” Williams writes. The words tossed about in her presence included:  Abnormality … Defect … Incapable … Incomplete … Not viable. You can imagine how painful those are for someone who just miscarried to hear. So Williams wants to change the conversation. “I stand here in front of you, [needing] to normalize my miscarriage,” she concludes. “And I’d love to hear about yours. “I believe it will allow me  –  and us  –  to gather hope and strength. As we talk, let’s add some of these words into our lexicon: Survivor … Strong … Abundant … Mother … Hope . About one in four women have miscarried at some point in their lives. Williams want them all to form a movement. “I invite you to start, with me, a vocal army of the 25 percenters who can normalize miscarriage in the social sphere. I was right there next to you at Whole Foods, bleeding out of my shorts. “Now I’m well. I’m a survivor. Healed, I will try again.” View Slideshow: 26 Stars Who Have Suffered a Miscarriage Amen, Ashley Williams.
