Opera Singer Files $2.5 Milli Lawsuit Over Episiotomy That Left Her With “Excessive Flatulence And Periodic Leakage Of Stool!”

We know isht happens , but not like this! SMH… According to NY Daily News reports : A professional opera singer has been left unable to perform after a military nurse allegedly botched her childbirth to leave her incontinent and with severe flatulence. Amy Herbst, 33, claims nurse-midwife Tiffany Williams carried out an unnecessary episiotomy at Fort Campbell’s Blanchfield Army Community Hospital, Kentucky, in Feb. 2012 without her consent. She alleges that the procedure — involving the cutting of tissue between the vagina and anus to help deliver the baby — damaged her digestive and reproductive systems. It also ruined the professional mezzo-soprano’s lucrative singing career and means she suffers intense pain during sex. Herbst and her husband Staff Sgt. James Herbst are now suing the government in Cincinnati federal court for $2.5 million for negligence, pain and suffering, embarrassment and loss of income. The lawsuit states that Herbst was not asked, at any point during the labor process, about the possible risks and benefits of the procedure. “At no time was she asked to consent, nor did she consent, to the performance of an episiotomy,” it adds. Birth records do reveal, reports the Military Times, that the episiotomy was carried out because the baby boy’s shoulder placement was blocking his delivery. Following her release from hospital, the lawsuit claims that Herbst “began to experience fecal urgency and incontinence, including periodic leaking of stool and excessive flatulence.” “She complained she could feel gas coming out of her vagina and was also experiencing difficulty controlling bowel movements,” it added. A nurse then allegedly told Herbst that the attempt to repair her incision with sutures had failed and that there had been a “complete breakdown” of the tissue. Surgeons at Vanderbilt University Medical Center reportedly told Herbst she’d need reconstructive surgery but that it would not completely cure her condition. And, once the repair has been performed, she was told she would have to undergo C-sections in future pregnancies. With medical staff saying C-sections could risk her singing career, she has decided not to undergo surgery until she has finished having children. The hospital has not commented on the claims. This is crazy… It sounds like she really deserves the $2.5 milli!

R.I.P. Activist And Poet Amiri Baraka Passes Away

Sad news for lovers of the Black Arts movement. Amiri Baraka has passed away . Via L.A. Times reports : Amiri Baraka died Thursday after weeks of failing health, a family spokeperson confirmed. He was 79. A playwright, poet, critic and activist, Baraka was one of the most prominent and controversial African American voices in the world of American letters. He was born Everett LeRoi Jones on Oct. 7, 1934, in Newark, N.J. A gifted student, he graduated from high school two years early and went to college at New York University and Howard University. After serving in the Air Force for more than two years, Baraka — then Jones — was dishonorably discharged for reading communist texts. He then moved to New York, attending graduate school at Columbia University and becoming involved in the Beat scene. In 1958, he founded the avant-garde poetry magazine Yugen, which he co-edited with Hettie Cohen — the two were married from 1960 to 1965. At that time he also co-edited a literary newsletter, The Floating Bear, published “Blues People: The Negro Experience in White America and the Music That Developed from It” (1963) and penned the play “Dutchman,” which explosively explored issues of race and gender. “I can see now that the dramatic form began to interest me because I wanted to go ‘beyond’ poetry. I wanted some kind of action literature,” Baraka wrote in his 1984 autobiography. “Dutchman” won the 1964 Obie Award for best American play. After the 1965 assassination of Malcolm X, Jones changed his name to Imamu Amiri Baraka, moved to Harlem and married his second wife, Amina (formerly Sylvia Robinson). Inspired in part by a 1960 trip to Cuba and in part by the radical wing of the civil rights movement, he espoused separatist ideas and founded the Black Arts Repertory Theatre and School. Baraka led the Black Arts Movement, an aesthetic sibling to the Black Panthers. Although the movement was fractious and short-lived, it involved significant authors such as Gwendolyn Brooks, Eldridge Cleaver, Gil-Scott Heron, Nikki Giovanni, Ishmael Reed and Quincy Troupe. “[W]e wrote art that was, number one, identifiably Afro American according to our roots and our history and so forth. Secondly, we made art that was not contained in small venues,” Baraka said in a 2007 interview. “The third thing we wanted was art that would help with the liberation of black people, and we didn’t think just writing a poem was sufficient. That poem had to have some kind of utilitarian use; it should help in liberating us. So that’s what we did. We consciously did that.” In Harlem, Baraka sent trucks into the community carrying people — including the artist Sun Ra — performing poetry, dance and music. Baraka’s work during the 1960s included the plays “The Black Mass,” “The Toilet,” and “The Slave”; the poetry collections “Black Art” and “Black Magic”; and the provocative collection “Home: Social Essays.” In the late 1960s and into the 1970s, Baraka became deeply involved in a number of organizations working to promote and consolidate African American political power. In 1980, he began teaching at the State University of New York-Stony Brook, retiring from its African Studies department in 1994. During his long academic career, he taught at Rutgers University, George Washington University, Yale University, San Francisco State University, Columbia and the New School for Social Research. Baraka made his home in Newark and remained a creative and political force. In 2002, he was named New Jersey’s second poet laureate — and soon became the center of a controversy surrounding his 9/11 poem “Somebody Blew Up America.” The poem — which pointed out offenses committed, mostly by whites, around the world and throughout history — included controversial lines that were considered anti-Semitic. Before Baraka could serve out his two-year term in the post, the poet laureate position was eliminated. Although he was frequently embroiled in political controversy, Baraka’s artistic achievements did not go unacknowledged. His awards include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, a PEN/Faulkner Award, a Rockefeller Foundation Award for Drama, and the Langston Hughes Award from City College of New York. Baraka was definitely an incredible force of a man and he will be sorely missed. Our prayers are with his family. R.I.P.

A Lil Positivity: Google Doodle Honors “Their Eyes Were Watching God ” Author Zora Neale Hurston

Google pays tribute to celebrated author Zora Neale Hurston. Google Honors Iconic Author Zora Neale Hurston Bout time Google showed Ms. Hurston some respect. According to NY Daily News: Their eyes were watching Google. Google’s daily Doodle, the digital image that greets billions of visitors to the site each day, honored Harlem Renaissance author Zora Neale Hurston yesterday on what would have been her 123rd birthday. Decked out in a olive green feathered cap and framed by an idyllic Everglades scene, the author’s visage rested on Google’s home page throughout the day. Sophia Foster-Dimino, the San Francisco-based artist behind the Google Doodle, said she was inspired by the author’s legacy. “She brought an incredible wealth of witty, heartfelt prose to our literary history,” said Foster-Dimino. “We’re overjoyed to celebrate her life and accomplishments today.” Hurston, best known for her seminal novel, “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” was born in Florida on Jan. 7, 1891, but she moved to New York in 1925 with only $1.50 to her name. She soon became friends with Langston Hughes and Dorothy West. Carla Kaplan, a professor of American Literature at Northeastern University and author of “Zora Neale Hurston: A Life in Letters,” said the author and anthropologist would be “so tickled” to be praised in such a modern way. “She was a very private woman who loved publicity,” Kaplan said, adding that Hurston often found herself “wanting others to see that she had a glean or a shine.” Hurston’s life in Harlem was often stranger than fiction – the scribe once “borrowed” money from a homeless beggar for a subway fare, claiming she needed the money “worse than you today.” She died in poverty in a Florida welfare center in 1960. “She was always more interested in recognition than she was with money,” Kaplan said. This is huge for Google to celebrate Zora Neale Hurston in this way. Hopefully, this leads to the company paying tribute to more influential African Americans.

Aaron Rodgers: I’m Not Gay! I Really, Really Like Women!

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers surprisingly decided to address the rumors surrounding his sexuality in an interview Tuesday afternoon. The Aaron Rodgers gay rumors stem from an alleged falling out with his personal assistant, but the NFL star told Wisconsin’s ESPN 540 that he’s straight. “I’m just going to say I’m not gay,” he said. “I really, really like women.” Aaron Rodgers Denies Gay Rumors Rodgers has long kept his life away from football guarded, which surely helped fuel speculation that he and Kevin Lanflisi were involved romantically. In Tuesday’s radio sit-down, he mentioned the gay rumors and the broader subject of keeping his personal life private with brevity and a bit of incredulity. “There’s always going to be silly stuff out there in the media and you can’t worry too much about it. I don’t.” Rodgers said, “I just, keep on trucking.” The 30-year-old Super Bowl XLV MVP added that, “I think professional is professional and personal is personal and that’s how I’m going to keep it.” There’s no proof that Rodgers is gay, but his close relationship with Lanflisi, some cryptic tweets and a string of circumstantial “evidence” sparked speculation. Lanflisi has been alluding to the end of a relationship much deeper than a friendship, and he has never had a public relationship with a woman. Kevin Lanflisi: Aaron Rodgers Boyfriend? “All that time spent on ‘us’ is now spent on ‘me,'” Kevin wrote. “I wish you would learn to love people and use things… Not the other way around.” Rodgers and Lanflisi had been best friends and lived together for several years. He also ominously wrote that “silence has an expiration date.” Some Internet theorists then linked this to a report from this past summer, when four gay NFL players were reportedly on the verge of coming out. An unnamed source claims Rodgers was one of them, but backed out “at the last minute,” which led to a rift with a bitter Lanflisi, who has moved out. Rodgers, it should be noted, has been in a relationship with Destiny Newton since 2011, though true to his word, he doesn’t broadcast this at all. Regardless, Rodgers and the Packers will play host to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Lambeau Field in the first round of the NFL Playoffs.
