Beastie Boy Adam Yauch Wore Many Hats

In addition to his role as a rapper, Yauch was also involved in film and human rights efforts. By Gil Kaufman Adam Yauch Photo: Getty Images Like an intertwined set of fat laces on an old-school Adidas shell toe shoe, the verbal flow of the Beastie Boys was always seamless. MCA, AD-Rock and Mike D dipped in and out of each others lines and traded off verses like a three-headed hip-hop hydra, their flows unique, but always tightly packed. With the death of Adam Yauch (aka MCA) 
 on Friday (may 4) at the age of 47, that flow is forever interrupted, but the New York-born rapper’s legacy lives on not just in his rhymes but in his many efforts outside the scope of his MC role. While the B-Boys always presented a united front in the studio and on stage, MCA was a renaissance man whose many interests ranged from direction videos and movies to his decades-long efforts to aid the cause of Tibetan freedom. Along with lending his indelible, rough-hewn voice 
 voice to the trio’s eight studio albums, Yauch was a cinephile who used the group’s bully pulpit explore his second passion: directing. Under the pseudonym Nathaniel Hornblower (aka Yauch’s mustachioed Swiss “uncle”), Yauch directed a number of the band’s most innovative and eye-popping videos , including the robot attack clip for “Intergalactic,” the Italian spy spoofing “Body Moving,” as well as the 2006 Beasties documentary, “Awesome: I F–kin’ Shot That!” He also directed and produced the 2008 street basketball documentary “Gunnin’ For that #1 Spot,” which the first title released by his film company, Oscilloscope Laboratories. Since then, Oscilloscope has become the home of a steady flow of interesting and offbeat documentaries and features, including “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” “Flow,” “Bellflower,” “Wendy & Lucy,” the environmental docu-comedy “No Impact Man,” the Banksy movie “Exit Through the Gift Shop” and 2009 Sundance darling, “The Messenger.” As Hornblower, he was behind the camera for the 20-minute star-studded remake of the band’s 1996 frat boy anthem “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party),” 
 in which “Eastbound and Down” 
 star Danny McBride stepped into MCA’s iconic leather jacket. Oscilloscope is also releasing one of the most anticipated head-trip movies in decades this summer, “Samsara,” an HD visual spectacle that is a sequel of sorts to the 1992 70-MM non-narrative classic “Baraka,” as well as a documentary about LCD Soundsystem’s final show, “Shut Up and Play the Hits.” Yauch, a Buddhist, was also passionate about the cause of Tibetan freedom. He was one of the co-founders in 1994 of the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit organization that raised money for and promoted the cause of the Tibetan people’s desire to break free from the People’s Republic of China. After donating money to the cause through royalties from a pair of songs from the Check Your Head album that sampled the chanting of Tibetan Monks, Yauch oversaw the launch of the annual Tibetan Freedom Concerts. The first one, in 1996, took place in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and raised nearly $1 million for Tibetan exile groups thank to sets by the Smashing Pumpkins, A Tribe Called Quest, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, De La Soul and Rage Against the Machine. Subsequent shows took place in 1997 in New York (U2, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Michael Stipe and Mike Mills of R.E.M.), Washington, D.C. in 1998 (Dave Matthews Band, Wyclef Jean, Pearl Jam, KRS-One), Amsterdam, Wisconsin, Sydney and Tokyo in 1999 (Run-DMC, the Roots, Garbage, Alanis Morissette) Tokyo (2001) and Taipei (2003). MTV News takes a look back at Yauch’s music, spirituality and impact during hour-long special. By Kara Warner Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Photo: Fred Duval/ Getty Images With the world still reeling from the news of Adam Yauch’s death on Friday (May 4), MTV News took to the airwaves with the one-hour special “Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy” to honor the life and impact of the influential artist, one of the founding members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted rap trio. MTV’s own Sway Calloway began the tribute by reading celebrity reactions to Yauch’s death from artists including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Travis Barker, Weezer and Jack Black, all of whom expressed feelings of sadness and respect for the influential MC. “Adam Yauch brought a lot of positivity into the world, and I think it’s obvious to anyone how big of an influence the Beastie Boys were on me and so many others,” Em said in a statement to MTV News. “They are trailblazers and pioneers, and Adam will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, Mike D., and Ad-Rock.” The tribute then turned toward Yauch’s indelible impact on the music industry, beginning with a look at one of the Beastie Boys’ most famous and critically acclaimed music videos, “Sabotage,” directed by Spike Jonze, followed by the group’s festive performance of “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)” on MTV’s New Year’s Eve show in 1986. Other clips featured in the 60-minute special included their 1998 VMA performance of “Intergalactic,” the year the group took home the Video Vanguard award, as well as more of their iconic music videos, including “Hey Ladies.” Sway touched on the evolution of Yauch’s spirituality throughout his career, which led to his founding of the Tibetan Freedom Concert, the first of which drew influential acts like the Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine. We dug through our archives to find the Beastie Boys’ performance of “Root Down” at the 1996 concert in San Francisco, followed by their star-studded, 2011 VMA-nominated music video “Make Some Noise,” which earned Yauch an award for Best Director. Tragic, shocking news out of New York just now: Adam Yauch — a.k.a. MCA, one-third of rap legends the Beastie Boys, influential filmmaker and music-video director, and founder of independent-film distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories — has died following his long battle with cancer. He was 47. Movieline will have more on Yauch’s passing, including official comment from Oscilloscope and appreciations of Yauch’s artistic legacy, throughout the day. Developing… [via Global Grind , Rolling Stone ] UPDATE [3:56 p.m. EDT]: Movieline received this statement from Yauch’s Oscilloscope Laboratories colleagues Dan Berger, David Fenkel and David Laub on behalf of the entire company: “We are deeply, deeply saddened by the passing of Adam Yauch – an amazing leader, a dear friend and an incredible human being. Today we are heartbroken at Oscilloscope as we take in this awful news and our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. Adam’s legacy will remain a driving force at Oscilloscope – his indomitable spirit and his great passion for film, people, and hard work – always with a sense of humor and a lot of heart.” And this followed from the Beastie Boys’ management company Nasty Little Man: It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam “MCA” Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer. He was 47 years old. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Yauch taught himself to play bass in high school, forming a band for his 17th birthday party that would later become known the world over as Beastie Boys. With fellow members Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Adrock” Horovitz, Beastie Boys would go on to sell over 40 million records, release four #1 albums–including the first hip hop album ever to top the Billboard 200, the band’s 1986 debut full length, Licensed To Ill –win three Grammys, and the MTV Video Vanguard Lifetime Achievement award. Last month Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with Diamond and Horovitz reading an acceptance speech on behalf of Yauch, who was unable to attend. In addition to his hand in creating such historic Beastie Boys albums as Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty and more, Yauch was a founder of the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and activism regarding the injustices perpetrated on native Tibetans by Chinese occupational government and military forces. In 1996, Milarepa produced the first Tibetan Freedom Concert in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, which was attended by 100,000 people, making it the biggest benefit concert on U.S. soil since 1985’s Live Aid. The Tibetan Freedom Concert series would continue to stage some of the most significant benefit shows in the world for nearly a decade following in New York City, Washington DC, Tokyo, Sydney, Amsterdam, Taipei and other cities. In the wake of September 11, 2001, Milarepa organized New Yorkers Against Violence, a benefit headlined by Beastie Boys at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, with net proceeds disbursed to the New York Women’s Foundation Disaster Relief Fund and the New York Association for New Americans (NYANA) September 11th Fund for New Americans–each chosen for their efforts on behalf of 9/11 victims least likely to receive help from other sources. Under the alias of Nathanial Hörnblowér, Yauch directed iconic Beastie Boys videos including ‘So Whatcha Want,’ ‘Intergalactic,’ ‘Body Movin’ and ‘Ch-Check It Out.’ Under his own name, Yauch directed last year’s Fight For Your Right Revisited , an extended video for ‘Make Some Noise’ from Beastie Boys’ Hot Sauce Committee Part Two , starring Elijah Wood, Danny McBride and Seth Rogen as the 1986 Beastie Boys, making their way through a half hour of cameo-studded misadventures before squaring off against Jack Black, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as Beastie Boys of the future. Yauch’s passion and talent for filmmaking led to his founding of Oscilloscope Laboratories, which in 2008 released his directorial film debut, the basketball documentary Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot and has since become a major force in independent video distribution, amassing a catalogue of such acclaimed titles as Kelly Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy , Oren Moverman’s The Messenger , Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop , Lance Bangs and Spike Jonze’s Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait Of Maurice Sendak , and many more. At friend Joe Francis’ estate. “They signed a $1 million deal with E! to get married on TV,” an insider tells In Touch Weekly , adding that Kourtney and Scott will soon get engaged “in an orchestrated, well-publicized manner.” The only problem with this report? Kourtney’s rep says it isn’t true. Then again, isn’t that exactly what Kourtney’s rep would say if the engagement were meant to be a surprise?!?

What are the Weirdest Avengers Merchandise Tie-Ins?

It has been years in the making. It is epic in scope. It contains elements beloved by millions. “It” is the marketing campaign for the hotly anticipated superhero gathering The Avengers , and as promotional surges go, those are high standards to maintain. Hence the $100 million worth of international promotional partnerships formed by Marvel and Disney — although, with such a global presence, it seems natural that a few of their marketing and merchandising moves would make less impact than Mjölnir . Behold the weirdest of what you may find touting the the comic-book blockbuster in the United States and beyond. Breaking the mold from conventional products — and conventional fanboys — is this customized collector’s desk, created by Tom Spina Designs . Made for a dedicated fan with a collection of screen props, this desk features items gathered from Captain America, Iron Man and all of their Avengers peers. This calls to mind another high end piece of furniture based on the franchise… Studio Dror created a S.H.I.E.L.D desk in conjunction with movie partner Acura. The spartan surface hides a number of compartment, hidden speakers and an iPod dock. The overall appearance calls to mind a possible scene where the members of the team turn to Thor’s Nordic experience to help them decipher the arcane instructions to an IKEA design. Meanwhile, though the snake-oil element of power/balance bracelets has largely been exposed here in the U.S., it looks as if Japan still clings to the supposed benefits of these adornments. Fashioned after Tony Stark’s suit-summoning device seen on screen, the firm Colantotte offers its Limited Edition Avengers Magtitan Neo Legend bracelet in titanium, stainless steel, and carbon fiber: It uses the power of magnets to — uh, well, help you out. Plus it is versatile: “Perfect both for Avengers thwarting arch enemies at the top of their game, or for everyday casual/business use.” The bling’s benefits sound impressive: They are axially magnetized in their trademarked “alternating north-south polarity orientation” (ANSPO) — which basically means the manufacturer took one of the magnets and flipped it over. Occasionally a major release will provoke a company to come out with a signature fragrance linked to either the film or a character. Well, credit the masterminds at JADS International with recognizing the immense scope of this film via seven fragrances based on Avengers players , including Nick Fury AND Loki: Close your eyes for moment and picture the behemoth that is the Hulk, veins coursing with secretions as he is covered in a sheen of perspiration. So what do you imagine he smells like? Nope, you’re wrong. According to the company, his fragrance is one of “Yuzu, bergamot and tarragon which create clean, clear top notes along with unexpected accords of water lily and nutmeg. SMASH! then carries an intense woody drydown enriched with Indian sandalwood, vetiver, musk and sharp cedar.” Tony Stark also gets his unique Mark VII aroma combining “mandarin, neroli, nasturtium and jasmine layered with light patchouli.” I’d say they got that one wrong. Actually I was expecting a light expression of pneumatic fluid mixed with fumes from 12 year old scotch, and just a whiff of shame. Fast-food tie-ins with comic book franchises are nothing new. However, one growing trend is the major studio release with tie-ins that are perfectly suited for American audiences yet unavailable Stateside. One such example is the Philippine chicken franchise Jollibee. For The Avengers , Jollibee not only offer up themed, reusable chicken buckets for their larger orders, but you can also purchase an additional item related to the film. Knowing the obsessives who collect Slurpee straws with characters on them, I presume many would clamor for these heat-reactive cups with hidden movie graphics. Just a couple of dollars in stores these will probably be fetching near $20 (after shipping, natch) on eBay very soon. Comic book films generate copious toy franchising opportunities, even when they make no sense. Slapping the image of characters on anything from playground balls to flashlights generates sales. The Avengers has even lured one company into being the exclusive slot-car producer for the film. But one product that truly defies logic is the Hulk diving mask: Is it really considered a clever move to obscure your child’s vision while underwater, all in the name of “resembling” his or her favorite gargantuan green Avenger? Anyway, the tie-in heft of a summer blockbuster with luncheon meat is obvious. I say this because it continuously occurs, even as you or I fail to see the connection. The Land-O-Frost company once again has joined a major studio in promoting its title by placing stickers on meat packs and staging a contest for customers. You, too, can feel a kinship with supernaturally gifted heroes by eating machine-stripped, processed and mechanically extruded ham loaf. Europe also has realized the cold-cut windfall to be had, with the Italian company Montana Foods following suit. Heroic baloney in Bologna — who’d have guessed? As we all know by now, Disney owns Marvel, and therefore the studio is able to platform its marketing with other company assets. Some can make sense, like covering the iconic monorails at Disney theme parks in graphics for the movie. But just because you can synergize doesn’t mean you should synergize. To wit, Disney also owns the ABC network. Therefore it was decided by somebody with a John Carter -like vision to stage a scene of the dwindling soap opera General Hospital with characters standing in front of an ersatz movie theater , discussing deep emotional plot points in front of banners for Avengers . I’m betting some marketing suit was brought into a board room and schooled loudly on some of the basics of Demographics-101. It would take a James Franco stunt-cameo to get tickets sold from that aged audience. A fully restored version of the feature will be presented May 2 and 16 at select Cinemark locations . From Movieline… Oscars to Remain in Hollywood Home – Recast as Dolby Theatre The Academy Awards are staying put at the Hollywood and Highland complex under a new two-decade pact, and Dolby Laboratories will have its branding on the theater that has served as home of the Academy Awards since 2002, AMPAS said Tuesday. The venue will now be known as the Dolby Theatre, CIM Group, which owns the Hollywood & Highland center said. Under the new contract with the Academy, the Dolby Theatre (formerly the Kodak Theatre) will host the Academy Awards through 2033.  ARC Entertainment Takes a Knockdown The distribution and sales company has picked up North American rights to action thriller Knockdown and is planning a June 8 theatrical release. Starring Tom Arnold, the film directed by Todd Bellanca follows the trials and tribulations in the life of an American boxer, whose past follows him halfway across the world. Camille Grammer: Returning to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills!

Guess Camille Grammer couldn’t quit the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills after all. An E! source says she will, in fact, return to the Bravo hit for its third season. Grammer, who all but officially left her role as a series regular on the program earlier this year, is now heading back to the reality show in some capacity. She will be making cameos throughout next season, reports say, including an appearance at Kyle Richards’ birthday party, which she attended last weekend. Over the coming weeks, Kelsey Grammer’s former wife is expected to continue to shoot even more scenes for next season. So much for Camille being fired. “I didn’t want to expose my personal life so much anymore,” the 43-year-old explained last month regarding her departure from the highly-rated reality series. “I had done that and was over that. I care very much for my children, and that show tends to take me away from them. I really want to focus on them right now.” Well, at least to a point.
