Nate Dogg Mourned By Family, Friends And Fans At Public Wake

‘I’m just glad to know that my brother was able to do what he loved,’ sister Pamela Hale-Burns tells MTV News. By Tamara Palmer, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Nate Dogg Photo: Mark Sullivan/ WireImage LONG BEACH, California — One of the West Coast’s most iconic hip-hop voices filled the air on Friday (March 25) as family, friends and fans waved goodbye to Nate Dogg . Hundreds of people gathered outside the New Hope Baptist Church to pay tribute to the late singer, who died last week at age 41. The service, which was open to the public, included close friend and actor Ricky Harris and collaborators Daz Dillinger and producer Battlecat. Some mourners came from as far away as London, New York and San Francisco to pay their respects to the golden-voiced singer. Nate Dogg was an accomplished artist who not only helped define the sound of West Coast rap via his memorable collaborations with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and others, but also helped earn top 10 tracks for Eminem and 50 Cent in the past decade. He died on March 15 due to complications sustained in the years following two separate strokes. At the time of his death, he had been resting at the home of his mother Ruth Holmes, not far from the church. New Hope was more than a temple of worship for Nate Dogg; it is also where he got his start in music, honing what would later be an inimitable voice by singing gospel in the choir there with sister Pamela Hale-Burns, now a reporter for the Long Beach Press-Telegram. “Singing is something that we grew up doing, and I’m just glad to know that my brother was able to do what he loved,” Hale-Burns told MTV News. “I said earlier that he chose a career where he never worked a day in his life, because he loved doing what he did.” The church is also just a few blocks away from VIP Records, the legendary independent shop where Nate started his career along with Snoop. It’s immortalized in Snoop’s video for his debut single “Who Am I (What’s My Name?).” “What this means for me today is just to keep on striving, to keep on pushing the line that we set 20 years ago until now,” said Daz, who ended his tour to attend the service. “I’m just here to celebrate Nate Dogg’s life.” Nate’s older sibling Samuel Hale, a.k.a. Sam Dogg, asked that Nate’s fans never forget the man who left a legacy of countless hit records behind. “Remember his voice, his talent, and keep the family in prayer,” Sam said. “My brother is a legend, and we’re going to miss him a whole lot.” Nate Dogg’s funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal (formerly the Spruce Goose Dome), adjacent to the Queen Mary hotel. While access to the funeral will be limited, a service for the public will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Dome, the Press-Telegram reports. Share your memories of Nate Dogg in the comments below. Britney Spears’ ‘GMA’ Tickets Auctioned Off For Japan Relief

Fan paid more than $1,000 for VIP passes to Spears’ performance this Sunday in San Francisco. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Britney Spears is doing her part to try and help those affected by the tragic events in Japan. The Femme Fatale singer donated two tickets to her “Good Morning America” taping this Sunday in San Francisco to a local area radio station who then decided to use them for some good. Bay Area radio station Wild 94.9 got their hands on two VIP passes to the show, which they in turn put up for auction, with proceeds going to the Salvation Army . By the time the auction closed on Wednesday night, the winner had bought their spot for $1,136. Spears will be in in San Francisco this Sunday to pre-tape her “GMA” appearance, which will air on Tuesday — the day that her Femme Fatale album drops. Spears was originally slated to perform in the Castro district at midday, but due to potentially wet weather conditions, the show has been moved to the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium . ‘GMA’ host Robin Roberts, who interviewed Chris Brown earlier this week, will be on hand to chat with Britney for the segment. “Good morning, America,” Spears said, her voice sounding a bit low and hoarse, in a promo for her ‘GMA’ gig that aired late last month. “I’m excited to tell you on Tuesday morning, March 29, I’ll be performing for the first time ever in a special concert in San Francisco … on ‘Good Morning America.’ And I promise you it’ll be a morning to remember. See you soon!” Spears also appeared in a second clip promoting the performance, in which she told fans, “Wake up with me. This is going to be so good.” Spears’ ‘GMA’ visit kicks off promo for Femme Fatale , which will include several appearances on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” the week that the album drops. MTV will dedicate this Tuesday to the femme fatale herself for what is being dubbed a “Britney take-over” day on the network. Additionally, Spears will make an appearance on the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards on April 2, though there is no word on whether she’ll be performing, presenting or just getting slimed. Robert De Niro Says: ‘You Think You’re Gonna Steal From Me And Get Away With It?? Fuhgeddaboudit!!

(Robert De Niro Sr.) Legendary actor Robert De Niro will appear in court in front of “your honor” to defend his father’s estate from some money-grubbin’ buchiach (see b*tch ). You cross-examinin’ me?! Actor Robert De Niro will be the star witness — literally — in Manhattan Supreme Court today when he testifies against an art-gallery director accused of swiping two of his artist father’s paintings, The Post has learned. The Oscar-winning “Raging Bull” and “Meet the Fockers” star will testify against Leigh Morse, charged with grand larceny for allegedly selling two paintings by De Niro’s late father, Robert De Niro Sr. She allegedly pocketed the $77,000 sale price without passing a penny to the actor, who administers the father’s estate, prosecutors said. Morse allegedly swiped the cash while she was director at the defunct Salander-O’Reilly Galleries, the sole handler for the paintings of De Niro Sr. Morse told a San Francisco gallery to wire the total $77,000 sale price for the paintings — “Guitar Case” and “Landscape with Pink Field” — directly into her personal bank account and never told De Niro, prosecutors allege. The buyers of the artwork were unnamed. “You will hear from Robert De Niro himself that the estate was never paid for those sales,” Assistant District Attorney Kenn Kern told jurors in opening statements yesterday. De Niro is expected to take the stand in the afternoon, said a source familiar with the case. Morse worked for notorious Upper East Side gallery giant Lawrence Salander, who pleaded guilty a year ago to a $100 million trail of larceny in what prosecutors had called the most massive fraud scheme in local art-industry history. Ohhhh so this heffer was trained to steal by one of the best. Now we get it. Leigh Morse gonna sleep with the fishes if she doesn’t come up with 77 large asap! Singer Phil Labonte tours picked-over convenience store, feels aftershock at the Tokyo airport. By Gil Kaufman All That Remains Photo: Prosthetic Records Massachusetts metalcore band All That Remains had barely arrived in Tokyo last Friday for a soundcheck for their show that night when a massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake shook Japan and they found themselves caught in the midst of one of the worst disasters to ever befall the island nation. While Tokyo was mostly spared the devastation that nearly wiped out a number of northern cities closer to the epicenter following the deadly combination of the largest quake to hit Japan combined with a massive tsunami, ATR singer Phil Labonte and his crew definitely felt the ground shake. They ran down five flights to the street to see what was going on as the light fixtures and doors shook back and forth violently in the building. As they hit the street, they could see skyscrapers swaying from the initial trembler and several strong aftershocks. In an exclusive video diary recorded for MTV News on his iPhone, Labonte described the aftermath of the quake and the challenges the band faced in trying to catch a flight out of the shattered nation Saturday. The clip opens with images of confused and scared-looking Japanese citizens standing in the street as aftershocks continued to rattle the city. “Our area around [the venue] wasn’t really affected in the way [the northern city of] Sendai was. There was no tsunami, there was no major damage to any buildings,” he said, noting that you could sense “something has gone on” when you walked around on the streets outside his hotel. After a large aftershock in the middle of the night on Friday that set off alarms in the hotel, Labonte said he packed up his bags as a precaution in case he had to run outside in an emergency. “That’s really all that I’ve been doing is watching the news,” he said, before walking across the street to tour a neighborhood convenience store. Confirming reports, Labonte filmed images of store shelves stripped bare of food and water, with row upon row of essentials snatched up by worried citizens. “As you can see, a lot of food is not here,” he said. “You imagine all these shelves would be full in one of the most modern cities in the world. … Most of the water’s been picked away clean … and it happened pretty fast too.” While awaiting their flight to San Francisco at the Narita International Airport on Saturday morning, Labonte said things were initially calm. With the exception of a few bedrolls laid out on the floor by people who seemed stuck at the airport, he said things looked pretty business-as-usual despite the emerging picture of the massive damage done to northern cities such as Sendai and the then-burgeoning threat posed by failing nuclear-reactor cooling systems. “There’s some places where it looks like people have been camping out, trying to get out. I guess there’s been a lot of delayed flights,” he said. With nearly eight hours to go before their flight left, Labonte checked back in a short time later to report a strong aftershock, which he said caused the large floor-to-ceiling windows in the departure terminal to flex in and out. “It’s still a pretty active situation. It’s changing pretty much by the minute,” he said. Finally, the band made it onto the flight, and Labonte reported that the band and crew were all OK. “I should take a second to send our deepest sympathy to all the people that have had loved ones lost. … It’s really awful and we’re very fortunate to not only have gotten out of Japan with no injuries and survived with not a scratch on anyone, but to be able to actually document this.” A number of artists, from Katy Perry and Lady Gaga to the Jonas Brothers , Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus and Diddy have urged fans to donate to the Red Cross and offered their condolences to the victims of the natural disaster. For more information on what you can do to help with earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan, head to MTV Act , or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Lauryn Hill Announces More Moving Target Tour Dates

Former Fugees frontwoman also launches Twitter account. By James Dinh Lauryn Hill After wrapping up her first outing in years, Lauryn Hill is keeping her comeback momentum going strong by announcing the second leg of her tour, Moving Target: Extended Intimate Playdate Series. Beginning Wednesday, the former Fugees frontwoman will kick off the 12-date outing in Florida before making her way to the West Coast, then wrapping up in May at the New Orleans jazz festival. More dates are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Like the first leg of the tour, Hill is making sure to visit smaller venues to give fans a more intimate experience. “One of the benefits of playing venues smaller than the ones I’m used to allows me the opportunity to not only reconnect with my supporters but to expose them to a portion of the musical journey I’ve been on which the world for the most part has not had access to,” the 35-year-old singer said in a statement. “I’ve never shied away from being musically adventurous, nor am I known for being a lightweight when it comes to lyrical content or musical exploration.” The elusive singer/rapper also opened up about her hiatus from the big stage, admitting that she’s still in the process of regaining all of her performance skills. “Getting back out there to perform is a lot like resuming a strenuous sport after having been away from it for a while, but eventually the muscle memory kicks in, and each day brings progressive strength. It’s an exciting and real process which these audiences will get to witness,” she continued. While Hill has remained shy of press in recent years, the iconic MC has launched a Twitter account to keep fans updated on the latest news and updates for the tour. The account hasn’t yet been verified. Lauryn Hill’s Moving Target: Extended Intimate Playdate Series tour dates:

James Durbin Soars With Paul McCartney Cover On ‘American Idol’

‘Dangerous’ Durbin surprises judges with his rendition of the Wings staple ‘Maybe I’m Amazed.’ By Adam Graham James Durbin performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX James Durbin has one of those big, overpowering voices that can be difficult to rein in. But on Wednesday’s (March 9) episode of “American Idol,” he was able to keep it in check, and turned in one of the evening’s standout performances. After tearing through Judas Priest’s heavy metal classic “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’ ” on last week’s show, one may have expected Durbin to go back to the metal playbook this week, when contestants were asked to sing a song by one of their personal idols. Instead, Durbin threw a curveball and opted to sing Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed,” which was recorded by Wings in 1976 (and may be familiar to fans of “The O.C.” as the song played at Julie Cooper’s wedding in the season-one finale). Durbin said he admired McCartney for his versatility and for being one of the best musicians, writers and singers in rock history, and said he one day also hopes to be remembered in those terms. In the studio, Durbin teamed up with producer Jim Jonsin (Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop,” T.I.’s “Whatever You Like”) to work on the song’s arrangement, and Jonsin pumped up the song with a bit of a hip-hop backbeat. Interscope Records head honcho Jimmy Iovine praised Durbin’s mighty pipes, saying “Idol” is a perfect vehicle for a voice like Durbin ‘s to be discovered. “You don’t hear many voices like that,” he said. “I didn’t even know kids were out there singin’ like that!” On the “Idol” stage, Durbin — flaunting a fresh haircut, a clean-shaven face and without the scarf “tail” he wore last week — did justice to “Amazed,” and didn’t drive it over a cliff with his over-the-top vocal wails. Instead, he held back and showed a more reserved side of himself, and displayed a range, both vocally and emotionally, that proved he was more than the one-trick-pony/ Adam Lambert clone as his detractors had him pegged. The judges dug the way he changed things up and managed to “slay” it, in Randy Jackson’s words. “I was like, ‘Yo, this dude can do anything, man!” the Dawg told him. “James Durbin is dangerous, America. This guy can sing!” Steven Tyler followed suit, saying Durbin took everything he ever felt and “kicked it into the middle of next week” — apparently that’s a good thing — and Jennifer Lopez complimented his vocal skills. “The truth is you have what the greatest rock singers have, which is a melodic quality to your voice,” she said. And it appears as though we’re going to hear plenty more of that voice in the weeks to come. What did you think of James Durbin’s performance? Let us know in the comments!
