Jonah Hill goes dark. Jonah Hill, Marisa Tomei and John C. Reilly in “Cyrus” Photo: Fox Searchlight Jonah Hill has been a reliable comic presence in films for half a dozen years now. But in his Judd Apatow movies — especially “Superbad” — we began to see that he was capable of more than just roly-poly second-banana parts. So it’s been a pleasure to discover, in “Get Him to the Greek,” that Hill also has the makings of a convincing romantic lead; and now, in “Cyrus,” to find him at home in the darkly devious role of an overgrown mama’s boy from Hell. The picture is funny, but it has stalker-flick overtones that are unsettling, and the deft assurance with which Hill navigates its ambiguous narrative is impressive. The movie opens on John (John C. Reilly), an L.A. film editor and emotional basket case. He lives alone in a dreary apartment and has just learned from his ex-wife Jamie (Catherine Keener) that she’s getting married again. Jamie is still John’s best friend; she wants him to find a new love of his own, and she invites him to a party where there’ll be lots of possibilities. John gets loaded, though, and his come-ons to various women in attendance grow increasingly pathetic. (“I’m in a tailspin,” he tells one. “I have to make a phone call,” she says.) Then, however, he’s approached by Molly (Marisa Tomei), who’s been watching him and thinks he’s sweet. They go back to his place together. They go to bed. (“You’re a sex angel,” he says gratefully.) Come the dawn, though, she’s gone — although she has left behind an encouraging note. She returns the next night, and they have sex again — in fact, they’re falling in love. But once more she has to leave. “Are you a secret agent or something?” John asks. Molly is actually a single mom. And when John follows her back to her own apartment, he discovers that she lives with her son, Cyrus (Hill), who’s 21 years old, but still neurotically possessive about Molly, and, as we learn, dedicated to repelling any suitors. At first, Cyrus is oddly welcoming. (“It’s good to finally have a new dad,” he tells John.) Behind John’s back, though, this strange man-child is scheming to snuff out his mother’s kindling love affair. John is a little perplexed by Molly’s relationship with her son. They sing in the bathroom together while Molly’s taking a shower. They roll around in the park like a couple of tussling kids. Can John somehow insert himself between these codependent characters and win Molly for his own? Not if Cyrus has anything to say about it. Mumblecore kings Jay and Mark Duplass (“Baghead”) wrote and co-directed the movie, as is their usual practice. This time, though, they’ve been given a budget big enough to hire well-known actors. The picture still has the brothers’ familiar indie flourishes — sudden shaky camera zooms and an improvisational looseness — but the lead performers bring a professional heft to the picture that’s new to the Duplass oeuvre. The dialogue is sharply funny. (As his battle with Cyrus spins out of control, John hisses, “Do you know what it feels like to be knocked unconscious?”) But there are also moments that suggest the story could go in a chillier direction. (When John and Molly are about to have sex in the living room, they suddenly notice Cyrus sitting in the shadows, watching them. “Can I have a hug?” he asks.) For its first half, the film’s atmospheric uncertainty keeps us wondering which way it will go. The movie isn’t entirely successful — it’s sometimes too loose — but it’s an unusual ride. And like Cyrus, we keep holding on. Check out everything we’ve got on “Cyrus.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Italy can still reach the World Cup semi-finals, says Daniele De Rossi

• Italy midfielder ponders possibility of losing to New Zealand • ‘We’ve got to aim at reaching the semi-finals,’ he says The holders Italy are still aiming high despite a stuttering display in their opening game, with their midfielder Daniele De Rossi insisting that failure to qualify from the group would be like the mighty New Zealand rugby union side flopping. The stuttering Azzurri, little-talked about among the favourites for glory in South Africa, face New Zealand in their second Group F game on Sunday after an uninspiring 1-1 draw with Paraguay in their opener. “Absolute failure would be not getting through, failure would be to go out in the second round,” De Rossi, complete with rugged beard and a snaking tattoo on his arm, told a news conference. “We’ve got to aim at reaching the semi-finals, it may sound limiting but it’s an important goal as then it’s anyone’s game.” New Zealand’s soccer team, ranked 78 in the world, are the polar opposite of the country’s great rugby side and De Rossi knows the humiliation the world champions would face should the result go against them in Nelspruit. “Losing to New Zealand would probably mean we would risk going out like France,” he said. “You can imagine what that would mean, it would be like New Zealand going out in the first round of the rugby World Cup.” The fact that Italy are even talking about the remote possibility of losing will not instil their fans with huge confidence but at least with De Rossi on the field they know they have a fighter, and one of the world’s top defensive midfielders. He scored the equaliser against Paraguay and has somewhat matured since the 2006 World Cup, when he was sent off for an elbow in the second game against the United States but returned to score a penalty in the shoot-out in the final. The 26-year-old joked he might not matured yet. “Last time something happened in the second game so let’s wait to say I can be a leader,” he smiled. He enjoys the rough and tumble in midfield but with Italy’s strikers only scoring once in six games, De Rossi could become an important attacking element given his penchant for long shots and charging forward. “I like a man’s game, sure, but I like to play football too, I don’t like needlessly aggressive matches,” he said, before pointing out that Italy triumphed last time without having a stand-out player in attack. “Results are the important thing. So far it has been a balanced World Cup. Italy World Cup 2010 World Cup 2010 Group F New Zealand guardian.co.uk

Sky Sports News to go behind paywall in battle with Freeview broadcasters

Subscription model seen as best bet over long term, while analysts say Sky may load rival with poor content News Corporation is to put another of its services behind a paywall as it emerged yesterday that Sky Sports News is to be pulled from Freeview. BSkyB, which launched Sky Sports News on Freeview in 2002 with Sky News and Sky Travel, is to replace the channel with a one-hour timeshifted Sky 3+1 service later this year. Sky 3 replaced Sky Travel in 2005. Industry experts also believe that BSkyB could decide that its Sky News website, currently freely available on the internet, should go behind a paywall. The decision on Sky Sports News, which has an average daily reach of 2.1m according to television measuring service Barb, marks a significant shift in BSkyB’s attitude to the benefits of using the reach of the free-to-air service as a marketing channel to attract subscribers to its pay-TV service. With subscription charges about to start on the Times’s website as Rupert Murdoch’s media empire searches for new revenue streams, News Corp is undergoing a major restructuring of its business model. It is already looking to maximise revenues from its Sky TV channels by launching a bid for the 61% of the satellite broadcaster that it does not presently own. Despite the Sky Sports News service benefiting from advertising revenues on the Freeview platform, it is thought that BSkyB has decided that over the long term there is more advantage to be had from a subscription model. As part of the move, BSkyB is to boost editorial investment in Sky Sports News as it prepares to launch a high-definition service. When the service is removed from digital terrestrial service Freeview, it will be available on subscription services Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk TV. “As part of a subscription service, customers can look forward to expanded coverage and the launch of Europe’s first HD sports news service,” said Barney Francis, the managing director of Sky Sports. BSkyB is seeking to pull valuable free content and boost the “must have” factor of its pay services ahead of rivals introducing cut-price Sky Sports packages for the next Premier League season. In April Sky was ordered to slash the price it offers Sky Sports 1 and 2 wholesale to rivals including Virgin Media and BT Vision . Alexander Wisch, an analyst at Standard & Poor’s Equity Research, said: “In my view if they are forced to sell key content, like sport, at regulated wholesale prices, why give out anything for free? “Its pay TV platform may be under threat from the wholesale issue so if anyone can soon offer Sky Sports [at highly competitive prices] then BSkyB will be asking what they can offer as added value to subscribers. They are looking to make the pay TV service more interesting, the destination for sport.” Wisch also believed that it was unlikely but not out of the question for BSkyB to be considering the long-term strategy of keeping Sky News on Freeview. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they pull other content out [of free platforms],” he said. “Sky News is important to them on Freeview, so far, and while I can’t see it coming off in the near term, I wouldn’t rule anything out.” BSkyB is expected to reach its highly publicised 10 million subscriber target this year. The weakening of Freeview would help shore up the pay-TV company’s longer-term position. Replacing Sky Sports News with a time-shifted version of Sky 3 was described by one former senior Sky executive as “a cheap way to fill airtime with relatively pointless TV”. BSkyB will pick up a fourth slot on Freeview when it takes over the Virgin 1 channel, assuming regulatory clearance is given to its £160m takeover of Virgin Media Television’s channels . BSkyB did not buy the licence to continue operating the Virgin 1 name. “Freeview delivers some advertising revenues for them, but is a potent rival for the pay TV platform, so they do benefit from a weaker Freeview, with a poorer content offering,” said one industry source. “Full conspiracy theory could see Sky put crap on the channel to make the inferior Freeview offering more so. Make a rival suffer, that is the pay TV way.” BSkyB Freeview Television industry Media business BSkyB Mark Sweney guardian.co.uk

San Francisco prepares to build its first space port

With a rocket ship about to land by the Bay, can Starfleet Headquarters be far behind? Help San Francisco build its first space port – and support the arts, too! The Black Rock Arts Foundation writes: The 40-foot-tall art piece, The Raygun Gothic Rocketship, offers rococo-futuristic, highly-stylized vision of space travel circa 1930's-1940's science fiction and is the latest in a series of temporary public art exhibitions sponsored by BRAF with the aim of enlivening and activating public spaces. The installation first landed at Burning Man 2009, and has subsequently appeared at NASA Ames for Yuri's Night, and at Maker Faire. The piece is comprised of a single rocketship, poised as if to board passengers for a typical run to a nearby stellar destination. When installed in San Francisco, the sculpture will be accompanied by a descriptive exhibit, a “rocket stop”, which tells the story of the rocketship, provides route, schedule and other information. The installation will be illuminated for nighttime viewing. We need your support!!! Want to donate to the arts, and help build a rocket stop where cosmonauts can grab some lunch before heading back to the stars? Drake’s Family Tree Extends From Childhood Pals To Kanye West

Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Bun B and many others are also influential in Drizzy’s hip-hop journey. By MTV News staff Hip-hop phenom Drake might only be 23 years old, but his roots in the rap world run quite deep. His debut album, Thank Me Later (which dropped this week) is the result of years of studying with a handful of masters, toiling in the mixtape circuit and traveling across North America in an effort to synthesize his unique style and build his credibility. But who is connected to the man born Aubrey Graham? As you can see in his hip-hop family tree , there are quite a few branches in Drake’s musical story. October’s Very Own (Drake’s personal crew) Noah “40” Shebib : Drake’s musical partner produced the bulk of Thank Me Later , and in the past, he served as the rapper’s road manager, engineer and lifeline as he ran up thousands of dollars on his credit card for the two to follow Lil Wayne on tour while they worked on So Far Gone. Oliver El-Khatib : Oliver functions as Drizzy’s creative director, weighing in on the majority of decisions in the lyricist’s career outside the recording booth. He posts to the OVO blog frequently, highlighting the tastes of the collective, from fashion to music. Oliver introduced Drake to the music of now tourmate Francis and the Lights. Niko : One of Drake’s longtime friends from Toronto, Niko introduced the rapper to his own barber when the former “Degrassi” star needed a fresh look. The two are often together, and in his Thank Me Later album credits, Drizzy tells his friend he thought he was an only child until he met Niko, whom he calls “my closest confidant.” Instrumental Allies (Kick-started Drake’s career) Jas Prince : The son of legendary Houston hip-hop pioneer J. Prince, the younger Jas found Drake on MySpace and urged Lil Wayne to listen to the upstart artist. Lil Wayne : The Cash Money Records superstar took Drake under his wing and offered the then-unknown rapper recording advice, telling his prot
