Rex Reed Believes in Natalie Portman’s Norbit

Forget Armond White ; when it comes to curmudgeonly New York film critics, no one can top Rex Reed. He’s the O.G. of vitriol, snark and just plain nastiness. “After a string of flops, the lovely, accomplished and underappreciated Natalie Portman achieved something of a career breakthrough in the pretentious horror flick Black Swan ,” Reed writes in his review of No Strings Attached . “Now, before the impact has worn off, and on the verge of an Oscar nomination, she crumbles like a mildewed crumpet. Short of breaking into the editing lab and destroying the negative, she should have done everything legally possible to stop the ill-timed release of a vulgar, stupid pile of junk called No Strings Attached . This movie could destroy everything.” Looks like someone didn’t hear that the Norbit thing was over . [ NYO ]

Hello! John Travolta Introduces Baby Ben

After tragically losing teenage son Jett to a seizure in 2009, John Travolta and Kelly Preston welcomed a second son, Benjamin, in late November. Unveiling the new addition to their family in Hello (as well as People ), Travolta says the baby has given “the house a renewed spirit and purpose.” With all the negative press Travolta has received – Carrie Fisher saying he’s gay and whatnot – it’s just nice to see him posing with the happy family … That baby Ben sure is cute . Given that Kelly Preston is pushing 50, welcoming baby Ben and having him be healthy and happy must feel like even more of a blessing for the family.

Chely Wright Speaks on Death Threats, Reaction to Sexual Orientation

Chely Wright came out as a gay country artist in May 2010. But while some critics may believe that announcement was publicity-driven, Wright says the result has been anything but positive for her career. “I haven’t talked about the negative,” Wright said this week. “You won’t hear me bitching and moaning on my Facebook about the hate mail I’ve gotten. My life has been threatened. I get nasty letters every day, ‘I’m through with you Chely Wright, you’re going to hell.'” Has Wright received support from fellow singers? Only from Mary Chapin Carpenter, at least in public. “They wouldn’t want their fans to know they were LGBT friendly,” the singer says of private messages other stars have offered. “There are also artist friends who I never heard from again. There are a lot of other people in the industry that I had a friendly email relationship with, or would occasionally text with, that I have not heard a word from.”

In Honor of the Machete Controversy: 5 Movies that Make Texas Look Good

Apparently, the Texas Film Commission has denied tax incentives to Robert Rodriguez’s Machete , citing a state code that bars incentives for films that contain “…content that portrays Texas or Texans in a negative fashion.” They didn’t cite any examples, but Robert De Niro’s corrupt Texas politician who murders illegal immigrants probably could have been construed this way. That said, it seems like most movies set in Texas don’t do the lone star state many favors. I mean, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre damages the reputation of their BBQ ! But for the sake of positivity (and because there are too many of the negative Texas movies to list), let’s take a look at five films that might have actually helped state tourism.

3D Look Inside Whales’ Heads Shows Negative Effects of Marine Noise

Image via UCSD What happens inside a whale’s head when it encounters sound? The mammals have highly developed capabilities of detecting and processing sound waves, something that helps them communicate over long distances, but which also spell their demise in an ocean filled with intense, loud human-generated noise.
