World Cup Opera Singer Is Dead

Nelson Mandela has chosen a South African singer to perform at the World Cup opening ceremony. Siphiwo Ntshebe died at the age of 34 due to meningitis. He was admitted to the hospital in Port Elizabeth last week and died on Tuesday. Ntshebe was scheduled to perform his new track Hope at the opening ceremony in Johannesburg on June 11. According to Nick Raphael, Epic boss, Ntshebe’s death was a tragedy for all those who believe in the power of music. His voice was truly wondrous and his music was unique in its melodies and the messages of hope and compassion are also truly inspiring. His new track Hope was a soaring track. It features a special message of hope and compassion which was written and spoken by Mandela. The track and an album with the same name were due to be released to go together with the World Cup. According to Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg, Ntshebe was relatively not famous in South Africa. His appearance at the World Cup opening ceremony would have introduced him to a much wider audience in his own country. Invictus on DVD: How Good is Matt Damon? (Hint: Very)

Clint Eastwood’s Invictus may well be remembered for bringing the Nelson Mandela rise-to-power story to Western audiences, or for being the film Matt Damon was Oscar-nominated for instead of the one he should’ve been nominated for ( The Informant! ). But it should be remembered as the film that gave many Americans their first glimpse of rugby — which, I must say, makes hyper-padded, five-second-play American football look like an old ladies’ bridge match. We get to see only enough rugby to make us wonder what the hell the rules are, and how in the hell the players survive even one season.

Annie Lennox on being HIV positive

Old rumors are sure hard to dispel. This is what Annie Lennox learned as she appeared on the annual Idol Gives Back show wearing a peculiar “HIV Positive” black shirt. Lennox has been under the radar for HIV positive before because of her strong activism for AIDS awareness. The question has popped up once again as she surprised the world with her “HIV Positive” statement shirt while performing with Arethra Franklin via satellite last Wednesday night. So is she really positive or was everything a ploy to raise more awareness on HIV and AIDS. The answer seemed to be a striking no. While Annie Lennox was unavailable for an interview – she was unable to travel due to the volcanic ash and had to perform via satellite— entertainment insider seemed to believe it as a strategy. She wears the shit because she wanted to help raise awareness and get more attention on the AIDS epidemic. She has done this kind of stunt before and it worked each time. Her trick was timely and apropos as the annual Idol Gives Back show aims to raise money for the African Children born into poverty and HIV/AIDS. Lennox, first gaining international prominence with her band Eurythmics, has produced numerous chart topper singles such as “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) and “Into the West”, written for the original soundtrack to the feature film “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”. Aside from her music career, Lennox is also a staunch advocate and supporter of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. In 2007, Lennox founded the SING campaign. After hearing Nelson Mandela on a speech about the African HIV pandemic, Annie Lennox established her SING campaign wherein the money raised is used to help HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment in South Africa.
