Also in Tuesday morning’s Biz Break: Horizon Movies picks up an ode to ’70s and ’80s thrillers, Martin Scorsese is driving a new Rolls Royce pic, movies are top for consumers, and more… Thunder Run Gets Go Ahead Ahead of Cannes, Freedom Films has partnered with Paradox Entertainment in a “substantial” domestic P&A financing arrangement for the CG 3-D action thriller Thunder Run . Matthew McConaughey, Sam Worthington and Gerard Butler are attached. The story centers on the bloody capture of Baghdad by American forces at the onset of the Iraq War, when three battalions and fewer than a thousand men launched a violent thrust of tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles into the heart of a city of five million, igniting a three-day blitzkrieg, which military professionals often refer to as a lightning strike. Hyde Park International is handling sales at the Cannes Market. Horizon Movies Takes North American Rights to Mr. Hush Kino Lorber’s Horizon Movies label picked up the film, described as an ode to the horror movies of the ’70s and ’80s. Set in an idyllic Pennsylvania town, the film tells the story of Holland Price, a devoted husband and loving father, who, unbeknownst to him, becomes the target of evil and dark forces. Around the ‘net… Consumers Are Pleased with Movies; Other Media Not So Much Respondents to an American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) gave motion pictures a score of 76 on a 100-point scale, up from 73 in 2011. Movies scored over broadcast and cable TV news programs, subscription TV and more, Deadline reports . Bully Director: Mitt Romney Apology ‘Fell Short’ Last week the Washington Post reported that while a student at Michigan’s elite Cranbrook Academy, the future presidential candidate and a group of friends confronted a classmate they suspected of being gay and pinned him down to cut off his long hair. “This could be a true presidential moment for Mitt Romney,” Hirsch told THR . “My hope is that he would recognize that we are past framing bullying as horse play or pranking around. We need our leaders to call it as it is.” Martin Scorsese Driving Rolls Royce Pic Martin Scorsese is teaming with Lord Richard Attenborough and Anthony Haas to produce Silver Ghost , a drama based on the true story of the founding of Rolls Royce that will be a co-production between Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions and Zuma Productions, Variety reports . Career Watch: The Commodification of Johnny Depp Johnny Depp’s career has been set on cruise control for years, and it’s worked splendidly. He’s Hollywood’s highest-paid actor along with Will Smith, received not one but two Golden Globe nominations in 2011 (for two of his worst films) and is happy getting paid stupid amounts of money even though he agrees it’s ridiculous and does not find it stimulating, Thompson on Hollywood reports .

30 For 30 Documentaries Re-Upped at ESPN

You don’t need to be a sports fan to have been touched by the 30 For 30 documentary series produced by ESPN, one of the few thriving outlets anywhere for nonfiction filmmaking and a patron of diverse directors from Oscar winners Barry Levinson, Alex Gibney and Barbara Kopple to legends Albert Maysles and Steve James to neophytes Ice Cube and Steve Nash. As such, today’s a good day for all of us, with ESPN announcing that it will continue 30 For 30 both on the network and online. Originally intended to celebrate ESPN’s 30th anniversary from late 2009 to the end of 2010, the series gained enough popularity to continue through 2011 and beyond; its most recent installment, Jose Morales’s 26 Years: The Dewey Bozella Story , premiered in March. Today, meanwhile, the NYT reports that the network has re-upped 30 For 30 for two years in conjunction with its sports-culture offshoot Grantland : “When we embarked on 30 for 30 , we always wondered if there would be 30 good stories,” said Connor Schell, vice president and executive producer of ESPN Films. “Now, I think all of us in this group believe that there is an infinite number of stories.” As the films roll out, they will be augmented on Grantland by podcasts, feature stories and oral histories. A short digital film — which will be unrelated to the longer ones — will make its debut each month on Grantland. Mr. Schell described the shorts as “visual editorials,” of five to nine minutes. “They’re meant to be interesting conversations with people who have a point of view about something or sports stories that don’t require a four-act treatment,” he said. The first short, Eric Drath’s Here Now , went online today and concerns the continuing odyssey of baseball’s exiled all-time hit king Pete Rose. Check it out , and mazel tov to all. Women Still Getting the Shaft in Hollywood: Report

Shocker, I know : “Females were ‘dramatically under-represented’ in the United States’ top 100 grossing films last year, accounting for 33% of all characters at a time when they made up nearly 51% of the U.S. population, according to a study being released Tuesday. The report mirrored a study of women’s behind-the-scenes participation that the center released in January, which found that women made up 18% of all directors, producers, writers, cinematographers and editors working on the 250 highest-grossing movies last year. That was only one percentage point higher than when the center began studying employment figures in 1998.” [ LAT ]

Cannes: Where Are All the Tacky Movie Ads?

Long queues formed outside the Palais des Festivals this afternoon in Cannes as attendees mobbed the building waiting to pick up their credentials. Marilyn Monroe presided over the scene; the now familiar image of the legendary actress blowing out a candle is this year’s official image/poster of the 65th Festival de Cannes, which kicks off tomorrow evening with the debut of Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom , the first of 12 nights of red carpet premieres. While Marilyn adorned the facade of the Palais, the hive of festival activity, a quick stroll down the seaside Blvd de la Croisette revealed a tiny surprise at least perhaps for those who return year after year. There are surprisingly little in the way of gaudy movie ads covering some of Cannes’ beachfront hotels, usually a festival staple. Even the historic Carlton Hotel at the center of the Croisette, which is usually peddling any and all so-called movies from anything playing in the Official Selection to the Cannes Market or — hey, even if it’s not in Cannes, who cares — would cover its ornate facade. But unless crews are simply behind in their schedule, the hotel was surprisingly free of its usual tacky ads. What happened? True, the economy is flat in France and with today’s inauguration of the country’s first socialist president this century, speculation has arisen in Europe whether Germany and their Gaullist partners will be able to maintain a united front for austerity. And of course, the political crisis in Greece has meant a steady decline in the Euro. Perhaps not great for Europe, but a small windfall for hordes of Americans attending the festival. But this is Cannes and the marina is still packed with zillion dollar yachts and the cafés are still jammed with people buying over-priced fare. But perhaps there has been some shift. Deadline reported that studios are cutting back on galas, preferring cheaper regional fetes to the estimated $1.5M to $3M price tags that Cannes can command. So, maybe those normally ubiquitous treats featuring the latest project starring Paris Hilton or Jean-Claude Van Damme or whoever will be less of a visual assault this year. Still, the Carlton is not ads-free. The ever-ubiquitous dictator himself, Sacha Baron Cohen , greets guests with his military finest. Tom Cruise ‘s mug adorns the hotel’s outdoor café for his December thriller One Shot , directed by Christopher McQuarrie (incidentally, he is also the writer for Top Gun 2 ) and Spidey, as in The Amazing Spider-Man , sits squarely near the hotel’s roof. Of course, it’s not just the Carlton that cashes in on their prime location blaring out their sponsors’ wares for top doll– err, euro. Brian De Palma’s Passion received some recent press after an image of stars Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace moving in for a smooch hit the internet. Their sexy rendezvous covers two floors of a nondescript Croisette building, while Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained reigns over a prominent spot very close to the Palais in front of the chic Majestic Hotel. A quick scan at the credits confirms that Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson are in fact still starring in the film… Stay tuned for more reports from the Cannes Film Festival. More Kinky Looks at Rachel McAdams, Noomi Rapace in Brian DePalma’s Passion

Looks like that first steamy image from Brian DePalma’s femme thriller Passion was just the tip of the erotic iceberg! New images from the film have emerged from Cannes , where the film is seeking buyers, showing more of stars Rachel McAdams as a businesswoman and Noomi Rapace as her assistant, who become locked in a deadly power struggle that will involve lingerie, showers, and kinky masks. If these pics don’t get this movie sold, I don’t know what will. Passion is a remake of the 2010 French film Love Crime , which starred Kristen Scott Thomas and Ludivine Sagnier; it’s DePalma’s first film since 2007’s Redacted , and judging from the stir the first image has created, should mark a return to DePalma’s wheelhouse. And, really: Has there been a single film still in recent memory as immediately enthralling and dangerous and seductive as the Passion mask shot below? Sign me up. The new images were posted to the film’s Facebook page (via The Playlist and De Palma A La Mod ), which adds this synopsis: The offices of a prominent multinational corporation is the setting for this story of a power struggle between two contemporary women. Isabelle has unlimited admiration for her direct superior, Christine, a woman well-schooled in the ways of power. Christine enjoys holding sway over Isabelle, leads her one step at a time and ever more deeply into a game of seduction and manipulation, of dominance and servitude. The game is played for keeps, and there is no turning back. [via The Playlist ]

Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs Bears Uncanny Resemblance to Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs

The recently announced project set to feature Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs has revealed its first reported look at the actor in character as the late Apple co-founder — or at least wearing the standard black mock turtleneck, blue jeans and sneakers (Ascis, not Jobs’s preferred New Balance, but whatever) so closely identified with the late Apple co-founder. As for the rest, I can’t really see it. You? Paparazzi shots are what they are, however, so perhaps we should all withhold judgment until he’s standing in front of some massive screen introducing whatever device changed your life 10 or 15 years ago. “I give you… the Puck Mouse! ” Etc. etc. [ TMZ via /film ]

Alan Rickman as CBGB Founder Hilly Kristal is Just About Perfect

“Alan Rickman has signed on to play the legendary owner and founder of CBGB in Randall Miller and Jody Savin’s project revolving the seminal New York rock club. Rickman will play Hilly Kristal, who in the late 1970s sought to create a venue for county, bluegrass and blues music (the ‘CBGB’ of the name) in New York City. But after acts playing that music were tough to find, Kristal allowed local performers to play. That decision was precipitous, as the club soon became ground zero for rock & roll as well as punk, launching the careers of performers such as The Ramones, Blondie and Patti Smith.” On the other hand, this was supposed to shoot last fall ; let’s hope the Rickman coup pays off for the new June production date.
