Civil Union Law A Welcome Change for LGBT Locals In Glenview

Until a few days ago, Denise White was fighting two battles. White, who has breast cancer and raises her four daughters with a same-sex partner in Glenview, worried about the guardianship of her daughters should she pass away. Although White and her partner raise White's daughters jointly, her partner did not have the same rights to guardianship—or to make decisions regarding medical treatment— as a legally married couple. That was before the Dec. 1 passage of the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act by state lawmakers, explained Barbara Schon-Lundberg, a local LGBT rights activist. The bill—which passed 61-52 in the House of Representatives Tuesday and 32-24 in the state Senate Wednesday—now awaits Gov. Pat Quinn's signature. The act is a step in the right direction, Schon-Lundberd said. The purpose of the law, which grants extended rights to both homosexual and heterosexual couples joined in civil unions, is to certify and register these unions and “provide persons entering into a civil union with the obligations, responsibilities, protections and benefits afforded or recognized by the law of Illinois to spouses,” according to the law's text. Schon-Lundberg is president of the PFLAG Council of Northern Illinois. PFLAG, which stands for Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, has 26 members in Glenview, said Schon-Lundberg, who also lives in the village. “It's something we've been waiting for,” she added. “We want marriage equality, but this is a good step.” Schon-Lundberg has been involved in PFLAG for the past nine years, after she became active in the organization to support her gay brother. She has been editor of the organization's newsletter, Open Doors, and said she doesn't get much opposition to her work from village residents. Her job is to advocate for and protect people like White and her partner, she said. “…There's still a lot of work to be done [to legalize gay marriage] and it will take time, but the tide is turning. There is growing support all the time.” added by: TimALoftis

12 Simple Things You Can Start Doing Right Now To Prepare For The Coming Financial Apocalypse

It is becoming increasingly apparent that the U.S. economy is heading for complete and total disaster. State and local governments across the nation are uncontrollably bleeding red ink. The federal government has accumulated the largest debt in world history. Every year we buy hundreds of billions of dollars more from the rest of the world than they buy from us. That means that we are getting hundreds of billions of dollars poorer as a nation every single year. Meanwhile, thousands of factories and millions of jobs continue to be sent overseas as American cities turn into post-industrial wastelands. Incomes are down, unemployment remains at depressingly high levels and very few of our politicians seem to have any idea how to fix things. Yes, things are really, really bad. So what are some things that we can all be doing to prepare for the coming financial apocalypse? added by: Revelation1217

Arsenic-feeding bacteria find expands traditional notions of life

Scientists have discovered a form of bacteria that can thrive on arsenic — an element generally considered toxic — dramatically expanding both traditional notions of how life is sustained and the range of where it might be found in the universe, NASA funded-researchers said Thursday. WikiLeaks cables: Secret Deal Let Americans Sidestep Cluster Bomb Ban | The Guardian

British and American officials colluded in a plan to hoodwink parliament over a proposed ban on cluster bombs, the Guardian can disclose. According to leaked US embassy dispatches, David Miliband, who was Britain's foreign secretary under Labour, approved the use of a loophole to manoeuvre around the ban and allow the US to keep the munitions on British territory. Unlike Britain, the US had refused to sign up to an international convention that bans the weapons because of the widespread injury they cause to civilians. The US military asserted that cluster bombs were “legitimate weapons that provide a vital military capability” and wanted to carry on using British bases regardless of the ban. Whitehall officials proposed that a specially created loophole to grant the US a free hand should be concealed from parliament in case it “complicated or muddied” the MPs' debate. Gordon Brown, as prime minister, had swung his political weight in 2008 behind the treaty to ban the use and stockpiling of cluster bombs. Britain therefore signed it, contrary to earlier assurances made by British officials to their US counterparts. The US had stockpiles of cluster munitions at bases on British soil and intended to keep them, regardless of the treaty. When the bill to ratify the treaty was going through parliament this year, the then Labour foreign ministers Glenys Kinnock and Chris Bryant repeatedly proclaimed that US cluster munition arsenals would be removed from British territory by the declared deadline of 2013. But a different picture emerges from a confidential account of a meeting between UK and US officials in May last year. It shows that the two governments concocted the “concept” of allowing US forces to store their cluster weapons as “temporary exceptions” and on a “case-by-case” basis for specific military operations. ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/us-embassy-cables-documents/208206 ) Foreign Office officials “confirmed that the concept was accepted at highest levels of the government, as that idea had been included in the draft letter from minister [David] Miliband to secretary [of state Hillary] Clinton”. US cluster munitions are permanently stored on ships off the coast of the Diego Garcia airbase in the Indian Ocean, the cables reveal. The base is crucial for US military missions in the Middle East. Diego Garcia, still deemed British territory, has been occupied by the US military since its inhabitants were expelled in the 1960s and 1970s. The British concept of a “temporary exception” to oblige the US does not appear to be envisaged in the treaty. But the British arranged that “any movement of cluster munitions from ships at Diego Garcia to planes there, temporary transit, or use from British territory … would require the temporary exception”. Nicholas Pickard, head of the Foreign Office's security policy unit, is quoted as saying: “It would be better for the US government and HMG [the British government] not to reach final agreement on this temporary agreement understanding until after the [treaty] ratification process is completed in parliament, so that they can tell parliamentarians that they have requested the US government to remove its cluster munitions by 2013, without complicating/muddying the debate by having to indicate that this request is open to exceptions.” Lady Kinnock subsequently promised parliament that there would be no “permanent stockpiles of cluster munitions on UK territory” after the treaty as the US had decided it no longer needed them on British soil. There is no suggestion that Kinnock or Bryant were aware of a plan to mislead parliament. Tonight, a Foreign Office spokesman said: “We reject any allegation that the Foreign Office deliberately misled parliament or failed in our obligation to inform parliament. We cannot go into specifics of any leaked documents because we condemn any unauthorised release of classified information.” David Miliband declined to comment. Cluster bombs drop large numbers of “bomblets” over a wide area. Many do not explode at the time but can kill long afterwards. The Americans dropped thousands of cluster bombs in Afghanistan and Iraq. Civilians in Vietnam still die from cluster bombs dropped by the US in the 1960s. The leaked US state department documents reveal American displeasure at the international project launched by Norway to outlaw cluster munitions. An American arms control diplomat, John Rood, privately told the Foreign Office in 2008 that the US disliked this initiative, called the Oslo process. The Americans denounced it as “impractical and unconstructive” and were urging countries not to sign up. ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/us-embassy-cables-documents/140962 ) Mariot Leslie, then director general of defence and intelligence in the Foreign Office, reassured him that the British were only taking part as a “tactical manoeuvre” and cluster bombs were “essential to its arsenal”. “The UK is concerned about the impact of the Oslo process on the aftermath of a conflict, foreseeing 'astronomical bills' handed out to those who used cluster munitions in the past,” Leslie is recorded as saying. But two weeks later Brown defied military opposition and went ahead in banning British cluster munitions. Afghanistan, which had suffered grievous civilian casualties from the continuing war on its territory, also unexpectedly signed up to the treaty in December 2008 “without prior consultation with the US government” and “despite assurances to the contrary from President Karzai”. ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/us-embassy-cables-documents/185048 ) Washington's reaction was to seek to convince the Kabul government that the US could still legally use cluster munitions on Afghan territory under the treaty, even if the Afghan regime itself could not. Diplomats recommended a “low-profile approach” at “sub-ministerial level … given the political sensitivities in Afghanistan surrounding cluster munitions, as well as air and artillery strikes in general”. added by: toyotabedzrock

Ron Paul: US “Counterfeit Machine” Will Lead To Political, Social Chaos

Congressman, analysts warn that deficit must be reduced now or globalist sharks will tear America to pieces. Texas Congressman Ron Paul, active member of the Committee on Financial Services, appeared on MSNBC today and issued a stark warning to viewers regarding the continuing debt crisis: reduce the deficit now or face mass political and social chaos. The Congressman began by acknowledging that the country is waking up to the fact that continued spending and an increasing deficit is unsustainable, but noted that this awakening has come “out of desperation” and there is still a long way to go before solutions can be put into place. The Congressman told Morning Joe that he is “heartened” to see that the Debt Commission is considering his proposal to cut military spending. However, Paul noted that he remains unconvinced, stating that there is a “need to change the policy, you can’t quit one weapons system and think that’s a solution if you still want to be policemen of the world.” While making it clear that he does not see welfare spending as a long term solution, the Congressman suggested taking $10 billion that is earmarked for building more foreign embassies and bases and putting half of it into medical or unemployment benefits “to tide us over”, while using the remaining $5 billion “against the deficit.” Earlier this week, the Congressman emphasized in a commentary piece that Congress should refuse to raise the debt ceiling, a vote that will likely take place early next year, noting that it would act as a litmus test for the new Republican controlled House. Paul wrote that “You will know that Congress, despite the rhetoric of the midterm elections, is doing business as usual.” if they vote to raise the debt ceiling. The Congressman elaborated on this issue in today’s interview. “If the Fed couldn’t monetize debt and the debt limit couldn’t be increased, [Congress] would say oh my goodness, we’re going to have to change policies, maybe we shouldn’t be the policemen of the world, maybe we shouldn’t be the endless welfare state, and it will come to an end.” The Congressman said. “And when it ends with the dollar crisis, everybody loses… then there’s political chaos. We’re not immune to that. This idea that we won’t suffer the same consequences of other nations…right now we bail out everybody!..But it all depends on trust in the dollar.” he added. “One day people will wake up and say ‘why are we trusting this counterfeit machine.’ We’re the biggest counterfeit machine in the history of the world.” MSNBC’s Jim Cramer re-emphasized the Congressman’s points by noting that if something is not done now to reduce the deficit, the consequences could be irreversible. “This is too close, this is not thirty or forty years if we don’t do something, this is ten years. It’s way too close and we have got to reach some agreement.” Cramer said. “IMF comes here if we don’t do this deficit reduction.” Cramer added. “The IMF is really pretty powerful, and you don’t want them in your country. But that’s who comes in when you can’t pay your debts.” the analyst warned. Ron Paul added that he has spent a long time warning that we are dumping huge amounts of debt on our children and our grandchildren, but “I don’ t think that’s true anymore, it’s here, we’re in the midst of the crisis.” http://www.prisonplanet.com/ron-paul-us-counterfeit-machine-will-lead-to-politic… added by: im1mjrpain

Hooded, Noose-Carrying Snowman Spreads Holiday Hate In Idaho

Residents in Hayden, Idaho were surprised and appalled to discover a massive noose-carrying, KKK hood-wearing snowman erected on the front lawn of a neighborhood home. Several parents noticed the nearly 10-foot-tall snowman while driving their children to school on Wednesday, KXLY4 reported. The snowman has a pointed KKK-style hood and an outstretched right hand with a noose in it. In addition to the snowman, the home also has an Aryan nations flag on display. This is not the first time the homeowner, a self-described white separatist, has been the subject of a media report because of his actions. In October, KXLY4 reported that the homeowner passed out bullets on Halloween. The homeowner later removed the noose from his snowman, after being visited by county sheriff's deputies and informed that he could face criminal charges for hanging a noose. The pointed hat of the snowman has also reportedly been knocked off. Other incidents involving the Ku Klux Klan have occurred around the nation over the past few months. Members of the Ku Klux Klan and the Supreme White Alliance rallied at Augusta State University after a student there was told her beliefs about homosexuality were “unethical and incompatible with the prevailing views of the counseling profession.” Based on her religious beliefs, Jennifer Keeton, who has no known affiliation with the Ku Klux Klan or any other hate group, considers intimacy between adults of the same gender to be sinful. Keeton filed suit after the university threatened to expel her if she did not undergo a “re-education plan,” claiming her First Amendment rights were being violated. “We're trying to protest the constitutional rights that they are trying to take away from her,” said a grand dragon with the KKK, Bobby Spurlock. “She has not contacted us, but we were contacted by someone that is aware of her.” At their rally, the dozens of protesters were confronted by nearly 300 counter-protesters from homosexual and civil rights organizations, The Augusta Chronicle reported. “We had 200 people rallying against them, and they had eight people,” said one counter protester. “They looked like idiots.” Hours after ending their protest, the Klan members held an initiation ceremony at a house in Warrenville, South Carolina. Later, the Klan members ceremonially burned a cross. The protest at Augusta State University was not the only appearance the Klan made in Georgia this year. Last month, members of Klan rallied on the steps of the Gilmer County courthouse in Ellijay and, earlier this year, another Klan rally took place in the town of Nahunta. “Certainly in Nahunta and Ellijay, although there were 40 robed Klansmen — and that's a significant number when you think about it today — there were probably 300 to 500 spectators,” Bill Nigut, Southeast director of the Anti-Defamation League, told WXIA. “And in Nahunta and Ellijay both, there were many people nodding in agreement, supportive.” “They continue to be anti-Semitic and they continue to be racists,” continues Nigut. “In an attempt to find a way to communicate with the mainstream communities, they take on issues they think the communities share in common with them.” On October 26th, the University of Wisconsin at Waukesha campus was vandalized with swastikas and the initials “KKK.” On October 20th, KAIT8 reported that a man in southeast Missouri decorated his yard by placing a Ku Klux Klan figure next to a black man hanging from a noose. The man, who said the display speaks for itself, later removed the “decorations” at the request of the county sheriff. On October 8th, residents of a neighborhood in Indiana complained about finding Ku Klux Klan fliers in front of their homes. “Martinsville, over the years, has kind of gotten rid of that reputation that we used to have down here,” one resident told 6News. “You get tired of all the junk mail, and I would consider that true junk mail.” added by: toyotabedzrock
