Statue Paying Homage To Tennis Legend Althea Gibson Unveiled At U.S. Open

O ver the course of her career, the late legendary tennis player Althea Gibson broke several racial barriers within the realm of sports. She was the first African American to win a Grand Slam title and the first Black person to win at Wimbledon. In honor of her legacy, a sculpture of Gibson was recently unveiled outside of Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York during the U.S. Open tennis tournament, CBS Sports reported. A sculpture honoring Gibson, who broke the color barrier in international tennis, was unveiled Monday at the start of the 2019 US Open. https://t.co/9QGVERprxQ — The Undefeated (@TheUndefeated) August 26, 2019 The creation of the sculpture was an effort led by the North Carolina-based One Love Tennis group. The young members of the group penned letters to leaders of the United States Tennis Association encouraging the organization to create a sculpture of Gibson to pay homage to her contributions to sports. The bronze statue—which was built by sculptor Eric Goulder —was unveiled by former tennis player Billie Jean King . “Althea is a very strong reminder that it’s important to the living people right now that we carry on her legacy and the legacy of equality,” said King during the unveiling ceremony. “I knew if Althea had gone through what she had gone through and changed the world, that I had a chance to follow in her footsteps and help change the next generations.” Those who were close to Gibson say that she would have been beyond humbled to receive the honor. “It’s about time,” he former doubles partner Angela Buxton told The Undefeated . “Althea, with her two ticker-tape parades, still wasn’t allowed into a hotel where the whites sleep or a water fountain to drink where whites drink, but she helped to break that down.” Gibson passed away in 2003 at the age of 76. The unveiling of her statue comes months after the city of Richmond renamed a road after Arthur Ashe . Black-Owned Real Estate Development Company Fights Gentrification In Atlanta

A Black-owned real estate development firm is on a mission to address gentrification within the city of Atlanta. According to Black Enterprise , a division of the real estate company H.J. Russell & Co., dubbed Russell New Urban Development LLC, is working towards providing affordable housing for Atlanta residents impacted by the wrath of the city’s changing landscape. The properties are located in Old Fourth Ward and Reynoldstown. All of the units are subsidized, and residents will have to pay 30 percent of their annual income for rent. Organizers of the $22.3 million project say that they are dedicated to bridging the housing affordability gap for low-income families and are on a mission to provide quality housing for Atlantans impacted by gentrification. “Our investment to enhance affordable housing underscores our dedication to building communities, and at the same time, enhancing the living environments of some of the city’s most vulnerable residents who also deserve quality housing in the heart of Atlanta,” President of H.J. Russell & Co. H. Jerome Russell , said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “With the completion of these renovations, along with the stipulations on these projects, we have effectively preserved a significant amount of affordable housing for seniors and families in the heart of Atlanta for the next 20 years.” There has been a push to create more affordable housing options in major cities. First, she got divorced, then lost her job, and had to file for bankruptcy, which prompted her house to go into foreclosure. Sadly in 1992, her youngest son Corey died in an accident. Suffering from depression and watching her life spiral out of control, Johnson started hanging out with drug dealers and found herself caught up in a lucrative operation that transported and distributed cocaine to Memphis, Tennessee. In 1993, she was arrested, along with 15 others involved in the same drug bust. Somehow the prosecutors convinced the others to testify against her in court. While they were given sentences ranging from probation without jail time to 10 years, Johnson was sentenced to life in prison without parole, plus another 25 years. Kevin Hart Seriously Injured in Car Crash

Kevin Hart makes a living by telling jokes. But there’s nothing funny about what happened to the comedian early on the morning of Sunday, September 1. According to multiple news outlets, Hart was involved in a major car crash several hours ago, suffering “major back injuries,” per TMZ insiders, after his 1970 Plymouth Barracuda veered off Mulholland Highway, rolled over and landed in a ditch in Malibu. Details are still coming in, but here is what we can confirm at the moment: The star’s close friend, Jared Black, was behind the wheel of Hart’s vehicle when he reportedly lost control and the car went off the road and into a ditch, as explained above. From there, the car slammed through a wooden fence and the roof was crushed on impact. Black and another passenger, Rebecca Broxterman, who was not injured, were originally trapped inside. A police report obtained by Us Weekly states that Hart “left the scene to his nearby residence to get medical attention,” seemingly aware that his friends were okay. It’s unclear how he could have been confidence of this, though. The accident was so severe that firemen had to saw the roof off the car in order to free Black and Broxterman; the latter of whom is engaged to the former and who also works as a personal trainer to Hart’s wife, Eniko Hart. In footage obtained by TMZ , Hart’s car can be seen in a gully with the roof totally torn off. The website also writes that Black had to be airlifted to a local hospital, UCLA Medical Center. Hours prior to the near-fatal crash, the Jumanji actor shared an Instagram Story of himself in the blue car, screeching his tires. The man taking the video jokingly tells him to “cool out” because he was making too much noise. UPDATE : After being picked up by a member of his security team and driven to his house, Hart was later treated at the hospital for his own injuries. He is believed to be just fine at the moment, however. Police later determined that Black was not “under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.” This car was a gift Hart bought himself for his birthday in July, writing to his 78 million Instagram followers at the time: “I added some more muscle to the family for my 40th…. Welcome home ‘Menace’ #MuscleCarLover.” Kevin and Eniko got married in 2016. They share 21-month-old son Kenzo and have remined together despite Hart having admitted he’s been unfaithful to his wife. The Get Hard star is also father of son Kendrix, 11, and daughter, Heaven, 14, from his marriage to Torrei Hart.

The Custody Battle You May Not Know About Earlier this year, Eason’s ex-girlfriend, Olivia Leedham filed for sole custody of the former couple’s five-year old son, Kaden. 5. The Legal Battle Ratcheted Up in Recent Days Olivia set up a GoFundMe account this month to help pay her legal bills. At last check, it had exceeded $6,000 in donations. 6. Source: D’USSE / D’usse Kevin Hart Injured In Car Crash Kevin Hart is alive but injured after his car careened off a highway in Malibu Hills. TMZ reports that the comedian was one of three passengers inside his Plymouth Barracuda when it crashed just before 1 AM Sunday on the Mulholland Highway. Crash scene video shows that the car smashed through wooden fencing along the roadside and the roof was completely crushed by the impact. Kevin was reportedly not driving at the time of the accident and cops told TMZ that Kevin and the driver both suffered “major back injuries.” The third person in the vehicle was a woman who did not require hospital treatment. Source: Jacopo Raule / Getty Zazie Beetz Speaks On Her “Cat Wash Routine” In Lieu Of Showers If you’ve ever been caught in the middle of a huge crowd at a concert or any other event, you’ve probably never thought to yourself, “these people 3 inches away from me definitely shower too much.” Despite that, Atlanta and Joker star Zazie Beetz thinks that Americans shower too much–which is a routine she admittedly doesn’t subscribe to. In a recent interview with Into The Gloss , the actress gives some insight into why she isn’t a fan of hopping into the shower everyday like the rest of us. “I actually think Americans shower too much. I like a cat wash—I do my face, my armpits, and my… intimates. I’ll use cocoa butter to moisturize. Nostalgic and functional—and it smells wonderful. Sometimes I use Sabon’s body scrub, but most of the time I just make my own with brown sugar and an oil, or brown sugar and honey. That’s quick and easy. I don’t use any perfumes… they’re so expensive. For years, I have been saying that I want a scent, because I love when you smell somebody and think, ‘Ah, you smell like you.’ But I kind of do have a scent—it’s just from the products I use, and not from perfume.” The German-born entertainer also says that she recently decided to transition into a skincare routine using only natural products. Beetz says that the recent environmental crisis inspired her to switch to a beauty regimen that was more sustainable–but she’ll always keep a container of Palmer’s cocoa butter on deck. Zazie also spoke on her daily workout regimen and how it changes depending on what role she’s playing at the time: “When I was Domino in Deadpool , I was on this really intense workout regimen. In the morning I would do two hours of fight training, which was essentially mixed martial arts plus stunt work. Then, in the afternoon, I would do two hours of weightlifting. That was five days a week, four hours a day, for months. I didn’t have much of a workout routine before, and such an abrupt shift was traumatic for my body.” She didn’t say whether or not her showering increased when she was working out for four hours a day, but we can only hope there was more than a “cat wash” happening after those intense sessions. Either way, a lot of the actress’ fans didn’t seem to love the news that she’s not getting clean very often and the idea that Americans “shower too much” isn’t exactly taking off.
