The Only Matthew Lillard Interview You’ll Ever Need

“Nobody makes a Scooby-Doo 2 and goes, ‘Oh, we’re going to make a…’ And I don’t think Scooby-Doo 2 is a bad movie; I think Scooby-Doo 2 is exactly what it’s supposed to be for exactly the audience. It’s just that people who are tastemakers are like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to deal with the kid who was in that movie.’ Now, I’m the same guy who was in SLC Punk and I’m the same guy who was in Dead Man’s Curve and every other independent movie in the world. But, you know, it’s just that thing where it’s like somehow, someway, you get kind of labeled this guy who was in a Freddie Prinze Jr. movie too many. And Freddie Prinze Jr. — it’s not his fault, either — it’s just these are the things that happen.” [ Moviefone ]

AFI Fest Unveils Stellar Line-Up; Free Tickets Available October 27

Kudos to AFI Fest for offering three important qualities next month, when the annual Los Angeles film festival runs November 3-10. For starters, in addition to fest opener J. Edgar , they’re programming Shame , one of my fall awards season must-sees and the potentially life-changing opportunity to see Michael Fassbender bare it all . (I mean emotionally, of course. Ahem.). Secondly, it’s held right here in Los Angeles — no pesky traveling to distant, exotic, champagne-sipping lands like France and Italy! Because that must suck. But most importantly, the entire AFI Fest is free. Complimentary. Gratis. Hit the jump to see the recently-announced line-up of must see films you’ll want to snag a ticket to.

Scarlett Johansson Was Too Hot for David Fincher’s ‘Pervy’ Dragon Tattoo

David Fincher on his search for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ‘s Lisbeth Salander: ” Scarlett Johansson was great. It was a great audition, I’m telling you. But the thing with Scarlett is, you can’t wait for her to take her clothes off… Salander should be like E.T. If you put E.T. dolls out before anyone had seen the movie, they would say, ‘What is this little squishy thing?’ Well, you know what? When he hides under the table and he grabs the Reese’s Pieces, you love him! It has to be like that.” He eventually cast the “great weirdo” Rooney Mara for his “pervy” Americanized adaptation; read the full profile here . [ Vogue ]

Man Claims Hangover 2 Is Based On His Life — Well, Except For the Transsexual Prostitute Part

Remember this summer’s Hangover Part II ? The Todd Phillips sequel about American pals who indulge in blacked-out Bangkok escapades involving kidnapped Buddhist monks, a chain-smoking monkey, Toyota car chases, kathoey prostitutes, Russian mobsters and Mike Tyson singing an obscure ’80s song from Murray Head? Well, now someone is claiming that the critically disappointing blockbuster was based on his own life, and he’s suing the filmmakers.

The Best Director Feud That Never Was

Taking to Twitter on Sunday, Looper director Rian Johnson would have you believe he sought to bury the hatchet in a putative feud with Jason Reitman. The results are… vivid! “Just before sunrise I found Jason in a half shattered bathtub in a park outside of town. He was eating pork rinds and had obviously been crying and had carved what looked like a Golden Globe out of soap. He was in a dark place.” [ @rcjohnso via /film ]

Weekend Receipts: Real Steel Cuts Loose on Footloose

Kick up your Sunday lose ! Real Steel used robot abilities to topple the very well-received Footloose remake at the box office this weekend, though only by a slim margin. The Thing chimes in with a halfway decent showing, and The Big Year ‘s first receipts are… well, un-big. Let’s investigate.

Friday Box Office: Let’s Give Footloose a Hand!

I’m squeaking and bopping like Deniece Williams, because the new Footloose is both critically hailed and a box office success. Kenny Wormald’s big debut tops the Friday countdown, leading all newcomers by a significant margin — especially the not-so- Big Year .

The Avengers Trailer Has Been Downloaded 10 Million Times

This pat in the back just in from Marvel Studios: The first trailer for The Avengers was “downloaded over 10 million times in its first 24 hours” from iTunes alone upon its debut this week. 10 million downloads. In a day. That’s got to also be the record for the most people listening to Nine Inch Nails (whose musical stylings played under shots of ScarJo pondering the tightness of her Black Widow costume, etc.) at the same time. Congrats! Now, to convert those 10 million trailer-watchers into opening day ticket-buyers… [Press release]

9 Milestones in the Evolution of Steve Martin

In this weekend’s The Big Year , Steve Martin stars as a wealthy retiree who spends his free time spanning the globe in search of rare bird species — a passion that gives way to a competition against his similarly “birding” enthused friends played by Jack Black and Owen Wilson. So just how does a Texas-born stand-up transform himself into the only successful actor/comedian/author/playwright/banjo player/Emmy winner/onscreen bird watcher in Hollywood history?
