Weekend Forecast: Apollo 18, Shark Night 3D, and Helen Mirren Round Out Your Summer

As you fire up the grill and wax philosophical about the meaning of Labor Day this long holiday weekend (i.e. it means no work on Monday!), take a moment to think about the underdogs struggling to do battle at the box office. Killer sharks , astronauts , even the mighty Helen Mirren — none of this week’s new releases may have the power to unseat the chick-lit segregation drama The Help , which could well sweep all comers under the rug with another #1 weekend showing. Bet you never envisioned the summer blockbuster season would end this way, did ya?

Postcard from Venice: George Clooney, Plus Lightning. Which Is More Spectacular?

Greetings from Venice, and from the 68th Venice Film Festival! I arrived here too late to catch the press screening of the festival’s opening film, George Clooney’s The Ides of March , which I’ve been looking forward to for months. That will have to wait until Toronto, next week. But I did happen to catch two spectacular visions my first night here: First a red-carpet sighting of George Clooney, cheered on by a noisy gang of delighted Italian fans, and a lightning storm over the lagoon, sans rain, unlike any I’ve ever seen.

Talkback: Is a Romancing the Stone TV Remake Your Worst Nightmare?

I admit, I can tolerate remakes. Everything from Fame and Footloose to Dirty Dancing and that globetrotting version of Clue are fine by me, even if they’re terribly executed. I just don’t have to see some of them! But something about the news of NBC’ s planned TV series adaptation of Romancing the Stone just hurts. Romancing the Stone , of course, is the 1984 action/adventure romantic comedy starring Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas. Could you stand to watch a Romancing the Stone series?

Coen Brothers Folk Music Movie Gets Co-Financing, Title

Remember that folk music movie Joel and Ethan Coen were working on back in June? It has co-financing and a title. Variety reports that StudioCanal will co-finance the film, now titled Inside Llewyn Davis , with Scott Rudin set to produce. The film — which will reportedly feature “live music” — is inspired, in part, by the life of famed musician Dave Van Ronk, an important figure in the growth of the folk music scene in New York’s Greenwich Village in the 1960s. Olivia Munn In Negotiations to Join Beefcake Cast of Magic Mike

It appears Steven Soderbergh has taken a break from casting calendar-worthy leading men in his stripper drama Magic Mike and is focusing on some pin-up women. Deadline reports that Olivia Munn is in talks to join the film, as a possible love interest for Channing Tatum. Va-va-vooom , said everyone. In addition to Tatum, and possibly Munn, Mike stars Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello. Wipe up that drool; your Wednesday Buzz Break has arrived.
