Gwen Ifill Dies; Longtime PBS Journalist Was 61

Gwen Ifill, the longtime news anchor on PBS, has died after a battle with cancer, the network confirmed in a sad statement. The journalist was 61 years old. The WETA president and CEO, Sharon Percy Rockefeller, wrote in an email to staff at the public TV station Monday: “I am very sad to tell you that our dear friend and beloved colleague Gwen Ifill passed away today in hospice care in Washington.” “I spent an hour with her this morning and she was resting comfortably, surrounded by loving family and friends…” “Earlier today, I conveyed to Gwen the devoted love and affection of all of us at WETA/NewsHour.” “Let us hold Gwen and her family even closer now in our hearts and prayers.” A mainstay at the network on PBS’ NewsHour and Washington Week, Ifill had been absent from election coverage last week. Not surprisingly, her ongoing health issues were the reason; Gwen leave of absence back in May to get medical treatment.  PBS NewsHour executive producer Sara Just said: “Gwen was a standard bearer for courage, fairness and integrity in an industry going through seismic change.” “She was a mentor to so many across the industry and her professionalism was respected across the political spectrum.” “She was a journalist’s journalist and set an example for all around her. So many people in the audience felt that they knew and adored her.” Just continued her statement mourning the loss of the journalist: “She had a tremendous combination of warmth and authority.” “She was stopped on the street routinely by people who just wanted to give her a hug and considered her a friend after years of seeing her on TV.” “We will forever miss her terribly.” In honor of her life’s work, Ifill was set to receive the 2016 John Chancellor Award from Columbia University this Wednesday. A spokesperson for the school did not immediately have a comment, but will likely issue one in the wake of her passing soon. Ifill, who was born in New York, graduated from Simmons College in 1977, before beginning her career at the Boston Herald-American . She held reporting positions at The Washington Post, The New York Times and NBC before joining PBS back in 1999. Gwen moderated the 2004 vice-presidential debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards and the 2008 vice-presidential debate. That showdown between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin became one of the most watched and talked-about debates in history. She also moderated a Democratic primary debate between Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last year. Gwen will be pissed. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Passed Away in 2016: Gone, But Not Forgotten

Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson: Is It Over?!

Khloe Kardashian has a very specific type when it comes to the men she dates. Basically, if you’re not a current NBA player, she ain’t interested. Of course, she’s openly spoken about her desire to settle down, and it doesn’t seem to be happening with these dudes, so maybe it’s time to try a new sport? We’d like to recommend the NFL. Those 53-man rosters offer a lot more in the way of options, and if you can find yourself a nice punter, then you still get all the thrills of dating a professional athlete, but they have way more time to devote to your relationship than most, what with working like 45 seconds a year. As you may know, Khloe is dating Cleveland Cavaliers center Tristan Thompson at the moment, but it looks like there’s trouble in paradise. For the record, that’s the only time that anyone has ever used the words “Cleveland” and “paradise” in the same sentence. We don’t know for certain that Khloe and Tristan have called it quits, but it certainly seems like that might be the case based on Khloe’s latest Instagram post. Beneath a photo with text that reads, “Fate loves the fearless,” Khloe posted this caption: “ Let me remind you that we don’t need anybody’s approval to be happy in life. EVER! Let you validate and accept your own version of happiness. You choose your life! Don’t let anyone else decide for you. We are no victims to life. No prisoners. But we do become victims and prisoners to the people we choose to coexist with. “We tend to become content, passive and blind within our relationships .” She could’ve been talking about anything until she got to that last part about being “passive and blind within our relationships.” Not exactly relationship-positive stuff there. She got even more direct from there, writing: “ Giving up is self-defeat. “Letting go is self-love. Letting go means putting yourself first instead of holding on to that negative space you don’t deserve. No body deserves. “Removing toxic people from your life is only allowing room for a positive flow to elevate your mind, body and soul. Not everyone who started with you will finish with you. Be ok with that .” “Removing toxic people from your life” certainly sounds like breakup talk. Interestingly, this all comes on the heels of rumors that Khloe is pregnant with Tristan’s baby . View Slideshow: 11 Times Khloe Kardashian Taught Us The Value of Tough Love We’re gonna go ahead and guess that those rumors were BS. We’re also gonna assume that Khloe will soon be scooping up Rams season tickets.

Donald Trump Reacts to Nationwide Protests: Very Unfair!

In the wake of news that Donald Trump had been elected President of the United States , thousands of Americans in cities as far-flung as Atlanta and Seattle assembled to engage in peaceful protest of a man whose campaign alienated Americans from all walks of life, including the leaders of the party that nominated him. Yesterday, Trump met with Barack Obama  at the White House and afterward, he spoke highly of the President and his family, and refrained from making inflammatory comments about the protests. It seemed, momentarily, that we were seeing the beginnings of the “presidential” Trump that he had so often promised voters during his scorched-earth campaign. Then he went home and logged into Twitter: “Just had a very open and successful presidential election. Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!” Trump tweeted. “Love the fact that the small groups of protesters last night have passion for our great country,” he later added. More subdued than much of what he’s posted on social media in recent months, to be sure, but the attacks on the media and the outright lies that Trump was so often criticized for during his campaign are still present in these tweets. It’s nice to see Trump showing his conciliatory side by paying lip-service to his “love” of the public outcry against him, but in the next breath he attempts to dismiss the movement by erroneously characterizing the demonstrators as small groups of “professional” protesters. Massive turnouts have already been reported in New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta with many more cities expected to follow suit in the coming days. Whether it’s justified or not, the anti-Trump outrage is real, and the President-elect will need to address it in a real way if he hopes to bring the nation together, as he claims is his intention. Writing for The New Yorker back in May, Adam Gopnik described the “the three-part process by which the gross becomes the taken for granted” in his coverage of the ascent of Donald Trump . The piece reminded Americans of how Trump was initially laughed off as a candidate, then accepted with a resigned plea for a return to normalcy once all this was over, then embraced by just enough Americans to elect him president as a repudiation of the same system that made Donald Trump a household name. Unfortunately, one of the early casualties of Trump’s election is America’s hard-earned reputation on the national stage, which is even now in a state of rapid decline more than two months before Trump’s inauguration. From Syria to Switzerland, out foreign enemies and allies are watching the dawn of Donald Trump’s America with great interest. Some see an opportunity; others see a human rights crisis in the making. In both cases, most didn’t witness firsthand the glacial pace of Trump’s 17-month conquest, as Americans did. At home and abroad, many are unaware that Trump lost the popular vote and won the White House as a result of the electoral college, an institution that Trump himself has described as a “disaster for democracy.” If the protests accomplish nothing other than sending a message to the world that Trump’s election was intensely contested and that tens of millions of Americans share their concerns for the future of western democracy and the fates of our most vulnerable citizens, than it will all have been worthwhile. View Slideshow: Donald Trump Meets Barack Obama: See the Shocking Pics! Perhaps some who are chanting and waving signs in town squares across America today are hoping to overturn the results of the 2016 election. Those hopes are ill-founded, and a Trump presidency is all but a certainty at this point. But to deny these people their right to gather in solidarity in order to publicly and loudly express their concerns and their outrage is to deny a voice to the powerless and attempt to suppress the spirit of the revolution that endowed Americans with the rights we hold do dear.

California Polling Stations Shut Down After One Is Killed And Two Injured In Nearby Rifle Attack

Polling Stations Closed After California Man Goes On Shooting Spree Yet another mass shooting took place today…this time close to two polling stations in California, causing each to shut down and voters to scramble for other locations to vote at. At press time, it was unclear if the shooting was at all election related, though at least one victim was hit while on their way to cast their ballot. Via LA Times : One person was killed and two others were wounded Tuesday when an assailant armed with a military-style rifle opened fire in a residential area of Azusa, forcing authorities to secure the neighborhood and shut down nearby polling places — sending voters scrambling to find alternate locations. After a standoff at a home that lasted several hours, police announced that the gunman had been found dead in the residence. Officials said they didn’t know whether the man — who was described as heavily armed — was killed by police during a short but furious gun battle or from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. By Tuesday afternoon, Azusa police said it was too early to determine a motive. At least one victim had been on his way to vote, a law enforcement source told The Times. Sheriff’s Capt. Steven Katz said the violence was not related to the election and the location near a polling place was merely a coincidence, though he warned that all of the information was preliminary. SMH! At least we know the shooter won’t hurt anyone else. But so sad for the people who were just going about their day and hoping to vote for the candidate of their choice . KTLA-TV

Presidential Election Results 2016: Who Will Win?!

November 8, 2016.  A campaign that spanned the better part of two years all came down to Tuesday evening, with the 45th occupant of the Oval Office to be determined. Will Hillary Clinton eke this one out? Will Donald Trump pull off an upset? Soon enough, we will know who will be president come January. We’ve had months to digest what each candidate brings to the table, their strengths and flaws, in what has become a political bloodbath. You’ve had months to profess your not-actually-profound views on Facebook in hopes of influencing people who blocked you weeks ago. Now it’s time to get it done. Go exercise your civic duty. If you’re on the west coast and wondering where do I vote , there’s still time.  Go make it happen. Then sit back and watch the results roll in as this insane roller coaster takes its final turn toward the finish line. Either way, history will be made in a presidential election like no other … and either way, the deluge of absurd ads will be over at least.  Earlier this morning in Chappaqua, N.Y., Hillary Clinton became the first woman to cast a presidential vote for herself as a major party candidate. She’s all but certain to win the Empire State’s 29 Electoral Votes against Donald J. Trump, who also voted for himself today in Manhattan. While N.Y. State is not up for grabs, plenty of other states are, and national polls show a very tight race, with a modest Clinton advantage. Will it be enough to carry her over the top? Slightly more likely than not … but if we’ve learned anything this year, it’s not to count Trump and his galvanized movement of supporters out. Seriously. Who would’ve guessed he’d make it this far – or that he’d rally from one campaign calamity after another to make this close? UPDATE, 3:45 p.m. : The final projection of Five Thirty Eight, a leading political poll aggregator, suggests the following win probabilities: As you can see, the site gives Clinton a 71.4% chance of prevailing tonight, based on state-by-state probabilities as indicated by color. Other forecasters such as the N.Y. Times put Hillary’s odds closer to 85% … while the Huffington Post gives her a ludicrous 98% chance. Our opinion is that 538’s percentages are more in line with Trump’s chances tonight. While he trails in the polls, he has reason for hope: 1. Polls are sometimes wrong. Usually, they’re pretty accurate, but if Clinton leads by only 2-4 points, that’s within the margin of error. 2. A relatively large number of voters still remain undecided. A 46-42% Clinton lead is more uncertain than a 51-47% lead, for example. 3. The bulk of Clinton’s lead may come from states she has no chance of losing (California, Illinois, N.Y.) and won’t help in the Electoral College. They’ll help, of course; 270 is the number needed to win, and those three count for a lot. But many other battlegrounds are perilously close. Anyway, just a few hours until the first precincts close! We’ll be updating this post with the numbers as they become available. For now, and throughout the day/night, sound off on this historic event! Tell us in the comments: Who will prevail, and who are you voting for ? Is the system rigged? Will she (or he) be an effective president? And the Winner is?
