MC serves up hip-hop and pop on the bipolar Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which leaked online Wednesday. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Search for Nicki Minaj ‘s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded in iTunes, and you’ll find that it’s tucked tight in the hip-hop/rap section, but putting Nick’s sophomore album in the confines of a single genre only tells half the story. The album was illegally leaked onto the Internet on Wednesday night, but when Barbs officially unwrap Roman’s new LP on April 3, they’ll find a culmination of her musical growth neatly sequenced in a symmetrical pop/rap package. The first half of Roman Reloaded recalls Nicki the Ninja’s mixtape days, where she spewed nothing but venom on tracks like “I Get Crazy” and “Itty Bitty Piggy.” The album opener, “Roman Holiday,” isn’t unfamiliar, but the theatrical track which Nicki brought to life at the 2012 Grammys makes more sense in the context of the LP. The vaudevillian hook gives way to some pretty clever rhymes that many may have missed during the much-panned televised performance. “Anyway stylists go get Bulgari/ I am the ultimate Svengali/ You bitches can’t even spell that/ You hoes buggin’ repel that,” she spits before getting schizophrenic, switching up to a flow that has hints of the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Sure, Nicki is a pop icon, but these days, so are Jay-Z and Lil Wayne. The Young Money superstar refuses to give up any rap ground, however, and the first seven tracks from Roman Reloaded are unapologetically street. The Hit-Boy-produced “Come On a Cone” and “I Am Your Leader” are both anchored by bass-rattling beats and both find Nicki (as Roman) inviting haters to her figurative male genitalia. On the latter, the Female Weezy pounds her chest alongside Rick Ross and Cam’ron, baiting her competition with lines like: “Nunchuck her, no time to duck her/ Sign of the cross ’cause this is her last supper.” Roman Reloaded has more rap features than her 2010 debut: 2 Chainz shows up for “Beez in the Trap” and Wayne appears twice, once on the title track and then again on “Sex in the Lounge.” Nicki then gives the hood some inspiration with Nas, Drake and Young Jeezy in tow on the uplifting “Champion,” but shortly after that, the bipolar LP takes a sharp turn. Rather than mix hip-hop with her ever-growing pop sensibilities, Nicki presents Roman Reloaded as a two-parter. If cassettes were still the music medium of choice, there’d be a stark contrast between the A and B sides. RedOne’s pulsating sound dominates on the Harajuku Barbie’s current top 10 single “Starships” and continues for five songs straight — the sequencing is not coincidental. “Pound the Alarm” is an adrenaline-laced fist-pumper, and “Whip It” proves that the reigning rap queen picked up quite a few tricks touring alongside Britney Spears last year. “Automatic” is another sweat-inducing dance anthem that should keep Minaj on the charts while her rap fare will keep her in the conversation amongst the hottest MCs. Over the course of 19 tracks, the Barbs should find a song to suit their every mood. “Fire Burns” for when they’re nursing heartbreak, “Marilyn Monroe” for when the world seems to be just too much and “Hov Lane” when they want to celebrate their relative victories. Since her come-up days, Nick has refused to be put in a box. With her cocksure rap demeanor, it’s hard to ignore her hip-hop roots, but when you factor in her ability to craft a popular tune, the possibilities become endless. Roman Reloaded is a further realization of those infinite possibilities, so instead of defining Nicki Minaj by category, maybe it’s time to give her own genre. A Bay County man is in police custody after reportedly becoming so angry about dinner that he fired one shot at his wife with a handgun. Bay County Sheriff’s deputies say the wife called 911 from the couple’s basement after an argument. She told the dispatcher that her husband was “highly intoxicated.” According to a news release, the 62-year-old man was upset about dinner and shot at his wife, narrowly missing her. Authorities said when deputies arrived at the scene they used a loud speaker to coax the man from his home. The wife was not injured in the incident. It’s probably one of the best ways to work through your failed celebrity marriage: Air all your dirty laundry in a thinly veiled dance-pop ditty from your hawt new album! Which is what Madonna seemingly does in her new song, “I Don’t Give A,” which Guy Ritchie is listening to somewhere, shaking his head. Sample lyrics: “You were so mad at me / Who’s got custody / Lawyers / Suck it up / Didn’t have a prenup.” OUCH. Let the divorce therapy rip! More lyrics: “Wake up ex wife / This is your life / Children / On your own / Turning on the telephone” “Messages / managers / no time for a manicure / work it out / shake my ass / I know how to multi-task” “I tried to be a good girl / I tried to be your wife / Diminished myself / and I swallowed my light” Eh, I give Madge points for getting Nicki Minaj on her track, even if her best lines are about rejecting shoes from Aldo and co-opting Jay-Z’s “business, man” bit. ‘You haven’t seen anything yet,’ Robert Kirkman tells MTV News about show’s future. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner Andrew Lincoln in “The Walking Dead” Photo: AMC “We’re all infected,” former cop Rick Grimes told his fellow group of survivors in the “Walking Dead” season finale — and boy, is that an understatement. In an action-packed episode that killed off multiple characters in brutal fashion, left the divisive farm completely in ruins, introduced a fan-favorite sword-wielding wanderer and teased the promise of a prison to come, it’s safe to say that the “Walking Dead” season two finale left fans feverish for more. The AMC zombie series, which returns for its third season in October, answered long-term mythological questions (The content of the CDC’s Dr. Jenner’s whisper? No longer a secret!) and pushed the characters into new places, both physically and emotionally. Perhaps most importantly for fans of the comic books, “The Walking Dead” has left the farm behind, with the prison very much in the near future. Between that change of scenery and the introduction of iconic character Michonne (with chained zombies in tow no less), season three is shaping up to be the best of the lot — a notion that executive producers Glen Mazzara and Robert Kirkman certainly agree with, of course. “When I think of ‘The Walking Dead’ book, I think about the prison. I think about the Governor. I think about Rick. I think about Michonne. That, to me, is the heart of that story,” Mazzara told MTV News about the future of the survival horror series. “That’s what I’m excited about writing and seeing come to life. I think that this has been a great chapter one. But now we’re moving into our best material. I’m really excited to see what the actors, the writers and the directors can do with that material.” Kirkman, who created the comic books upon which the TV show is based, is equally excited, if not more so, to revisit “the best material” of the original “Walking Dead” story. “When the camera rises over the trees and the prison comes into view, I did get a little choked up,” Kirkman confessed. “It’s a really cool, very bold promise to the audience. To show that and to say, just wait until you see what we’re going to do with season three. I’m intimately involved with this show. So knowing what we’ve already discussed and knowing the different things that we want to do, I can say that we are at the very beginning of this show. We haven’t quite gotten to a lot of the big things we’ve been building to just yet. If you’re a big fan of ‘The Walking Dead’ and you enjoyed season one and season two, then you haven’t seen anything yet.” “We’re just getting started,” Mazzara agreed.
