Fresh on the heels of her Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song, Mary J. Blige will be coming to a silver screen near you. She stars in the new movie musical, Rock of Ages. The New Line Cinema release is based on the Broadway production where two people meet at a club on the Sunset Strip called Rock of Ages. The two fall in love and try to maintain a relationship over time while using 80s rock anthems to add emotion and depth. Blige stars as a bartender named Justice. Justice has has daughter in the film named Sherrie. Justice’s pivotal scene is when she sings “Harden My Heart.” Rock of Ages also stars Tom Cruise , Alec Baldwin , and Julianne Hough . Adam Shankman is the director. His prior works include Bringing Down The House and the 2007 musical Hairspray . Rock of Ages will hit theaters on June 1, 2012. Rapper’s popularity hit fever pitch in 2011 as she toured with Lil Wayne and Britney Spears. By Nadeska Alexis Photo: Getty Images Nicki Minaj kicked off her 29th birthday on the video set for Madonna’s “Give Me All Your Love,” and if that collaboration isn’t enough indication of the monster year she’s had, then factor in the kiss and personal birthday song Madge threw in. Minaj released her debut album Pink Friday in November 2010, but her popularity hit fever pitch this year, which is why MTV has named the Young Money rapper the #2 in MTV’s Artists of 2011 list, second only to Katy Perry. Running off the momentum of last year — when she performed at Jay-Z and Eminem’s sold-out Yankee Stadium shows — Minaj joined her YMCMB family on Lil Wayne’s I Am Still Music Tour early in 2011. She then surprised even herself by landing an opening stint on Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale Tour , where the two treated audiences to joint performances of Spears’ “Till the World Ends” remix. In addition to the fans she gained from both high-profile tours, Nicki’s new cult following grew even more after her monster single “Super Bass,” which became a pop-culture phenomenon and landed at #2 on MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 list. Video clips of pop stars such as Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez rapping over the track made rounds on the Web, catapulting the song to new heights. It makes sense then that when Minaj won the award for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist at the 2011 American Music Awards , she gave a shout-out to Taylor Swift — who was in the audience mouthing the words to “Super Bass.” That night, Minaj also beat out Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne and Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the year, but that was only a fraction of her 2011 awards-show sweep. The colorful clip that accompanied “Super Bass” nabbed a Moonman for the year’s Best Hip-Hop Video at the VMAs , and the Young Money rapper took home a trophy for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards. Top that off with Billboard ‘s 2011 Rising Star Award and a much-coveted 2012 Grammy nomination for Best New Artist . Music was only the beginning of Nicki’s whirlwind year. The Queen Barb inked a new deal with OPI nail polish to release her own six-color line in 2012, and in November, she joined Ricky Martin as the face of MAC’s 2012 Viva Glam campaign (hear her rapping about both deals on Drake’s Take Care single “Make Me Proud”). As the new projects and collaborations continued to roll in from left and right, Minaj’s throng of Barbz began to press her for new music, which prompted Nicki to announce a February 14 release date for her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. The LP’s first single, “Roman in Moscow,” debuted just as Mattel immortalized her in a one-off Nicki Minaj Barbie doll that would be auctioned off for charity. The public’s love affair with Minaj this year was easy enough to sum up in words, but D12’s Bizarre put a visual spin on it with the strange but entertaining “Hey Nicki” video . The clip catches the Detroit rapper vying for her attention, and although it reaches into creepy territory, you can’t help but feel that the masses perfectly understand Bizarre’s infatuation. Nicki’s bouncy hit ruled radio and left a cultural impact. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images It wasn’t Pink Friday ‘s first single — hell, it wasn’t even technically on the album’s proper track list! — but Nicki Minaj ‘s “Super Bass” was voted #2 on MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 list. Though Nicki’s album was released in November 2010, “Super Bass” — which was produced by Kane Beatz and co-written by Ester Dean — didn’t emerge as a single until May. The decision to drop the track as the album’s seventh single was a no-brainer. After being prompted to request a song during a radio interview with Nashville’s 107.5 , Taylor Swift answered, “Can I play album cuts?” She then began to explain to listeners how she had been listening to “Super Bass” on repeat, before Swift rapped lyrics to the song on air. Nicki would go on to credit Swift with helping make the song popular and even performed it with the country star during an August concert at L.A.’s Staples Center. “Taylor Swift did her little interview about ‘Super Bass,’ and [it] took off in the States with the people sort of knowing it,” Minaj said in an interview with L.A. radio station 102.7 KIIS-FM . “It’s just really uncanny how all that stuff happens,” she added. “We didn’t plan it like that.” The Pink Friday bonus song from the album’s deluxe edition had all the right ingredients. There’s the bright and airy guitar intro, which eventually builds into a full pop affair complete with a knocking 808 and, of course, that patented bass drum. Lyrically, Nicki threw a shout-out to 1980s rap legend Slick Rick and threatened to slap a chick all in an effort to woo her drug-dealing crush. Typically, cheery-sounding pop hits aren’t so edgy, but the Harajuku Barbie has successfully elbowed her way into the spotlight alongside starlets like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift — and has done it her way. “Super Bass” peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the rap chart, but more than its chart positioning was the song’s impact. One YouTube search of “Super Bass” will uncover the VMA-winning video for the single, of course, but also thousands of covers from artists like Selena Gomez and Karmin with ?uestlove and various renditions from fans as well. Who can forget the pink princess Sophia Grace Brownlee ‘s cute performance vid which eventually clocked over 25 million views? The clip became so popular that in October, Ellen DeGeneres invited the young Sophia onto her television show and introduced her to Minaj, making one of the year’s most memorable television moments.
