Forget the theatrics, ’cause when she gets onstage, she wants to pump energy into the crowd. And to do that, she goes back to her roots. “You always want to start the show and get everybody riled up,” she told MTV News during the kickoff to Lil Wayne’s I Am Music II Tour . “At the end of the day, it’s hip-hop. Let’s not get that misconstrued or anything. People see the way I’m dressed and forget what I’m really doing. Why I’m really here is ’cause I write my raps. Why I’m really here is because I’m an MC. Why I’m really here is because I can go toe-to-toe with dudes. So we want to start the show off saying, Yep, this is Nicki Minaj and this is what I do.” And the Pink Friday star certainly does do those things. She arrived onstage Wednesday night with a booming introduction courtesy of the film “Gladiator.” From there, she launched into a spirited rendition of her Lil’ Kim dis track, “Roman’s Revenge.” Later on, she moved on to her pop fare, including “Your Love” and “Right Thru Me.” But the Queens rapper said she wanted to start the proceedings off by reminding everyone of the artist she was when Lil Wayne first discovered her rapping on a DVD. When we spoke to Wayne about signing Minaj, he told us how she developed into an artist who can hold her own. “I can’t front, I just thought she was going to be the new female MC that none of these other female MCs can touch,” Wayne told MTV News about Nicki . “But now, she’s blossomed into a megastar with this new attitude and this style. Now when I talk to her, I just tell her, ‘Do what you do, baby.’ I used to be able to go into the studio and say, ‘Nah, don’t say that, don’t say that.’ You know, ‘That was better.’ Now, do what you do, baby. Nicki Minaj tells MTV News she completed a verse for Weezy’s album. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne and Sway Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne’s highly anticipated forthcoming album, Tha Carter IV , finally has an official release date: May 16. Weezy F. Baby revealed the date Wednesday, during opening night of his I Am Music II Tour in Rhode Island . ” Tha Carter IV is done,” Wayne told MTV News. “All they need to do is tell Tez (manager Cortez Bryant) to stop sitting on it. Tez, stop sitting on Tha Carter IV and put the album out.” Bryant, Weezy’s longtime manager, was in attendance and provided the specific release date. “May 16, believe that,” Wayne said. “It can come out tomorrow ’cause I’m so finished … Tha Carter IV will be dropping May 16. If you’re not doing anything, do me,” he added. The album will be his first official release since he was let out of Rikers Island prison facility in November after serving eight months of a one-year sentence. Originally, there were reports the album would come out on the same day Weezy was granted his freedom, however those plans never came to fruition. The album’s lead single, the Bangladesh-produced “6 Foot 7 Foot,” features Young Money artist Cory Gunz. Recently, on the set of her upcoming video for “Super Bass,” fellow YM artist Nicki Minaj revealed to MTV News that she completed a verse for the album. “I think Carter IV is gonna just be exceptional, of course,” she said. “I think Wayne is definitely on his grind crazy right now.” Are you awaiting the release of Tha Carter IV ? Nicki Minaj, Travis Barker and Rick Ross join Weezy, who tells the crowd that performing post-prison is ‘better than I could have imagined.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne performs at his I Am Music II tour in Providence, Rhode Island on March 17, 2011 Photo: Taylor Hill/ Getty Images PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — Lil Wayne returned to the stage as a headliner for the first time in more than a year on Wednesday night (March 16), and the superstar MC let the Rhode Island concertgoers know just how grateful he was to be kicking off his I Am Music II Tour in their town. “I swear to God, I was in a place a few months ago, I couldn’t imagine this sh–,” Wayne told the sold-out crowd, referring to his time behind bars . “But now that I’m here, it’s better than I could have imagined.” To say the feeling was mutual would be an understatement. The New England crowd cheered Weezy’s every move, from his otherworldly rhyming to the array of guests he invited onstage, including Young Money members Shanell, Jae Millz, Mack Maine and Lil Twist. Sporting a white V-neck tee, jeans, bright Vans and a fitted cap and shades, Wayne looked trimmer than he did upon his release from prison in November. His dreadlocks appeared longer, and the rapper was lucid. As a result of an Arizona case, Wayne is forbidden from drinking alcohol or partaking in any activities involving drugs. The added clarity served him well. He was agile throughout his verses on “A Milli.” “He’s a beast, he’s a dog, he’s a motherf—ing problem,” he rapped. “OK, you’re a goon, but what’s a goon to a goblin?/ Nothing, nothing, you ain’t scaring nothing/ On some f—ing bullshit, call him Dennis Rodman.” After running through “Look At Me Now,” “I’m Going In” and “Got Money,” Wayne revisited his standout mixtape, No Ceilings, before ceding the stage to Nicki Minaj. The Young Money empress was ready for combat. She entered to a blistering scene of “Gladiator” playing on the enormous LCD screen behind the stage. An unknown person in a monk’s outfit walked to the front of the stage followed by Nicki’s barbies in their pink bobs. Rising through a propelled entrance underneath the stage, the Pink Friday star rocketed onto the stage to “Roman’s Revenge.” Sporting a white-and-pink body-hugging one-piece suit and a Bride of Frankenstein-like wig, Nicki was flamboyant in her “Roman” persona. She took a football onstage and ran through a cadre of her dancers –clad in helmets, while Nicki wore shoulder pads — en route to a touchdown and spike. The “Moment 4 Life” star was also flirtatious. She invited a man onstage with her (after another one tried to rush the stage before security escorted him off) for a lap dance. “There’s three rules,” she told the lucky participant. “Keep your legs open, hands behind your back and keep your mouth shut.” Then, as Sean Kingston’s “Letting Go,” featuring the Queens lyricist, boomed on the speakers, she teased her guest with a dutty-whine thrust. Wayne returned to the stage after 30 minutes, and after a brief Rebirth set, the benevolent CEO invited Lil Twist out for their new collaboration “Love Affair.” Mack Maine, Jae Millz and Nicki joined the boss for “Bed Rock.” Young Money’s latest signee, Cory Gunz, proved to be the most energetic of the crew when the Bronx upstart arrived next for a frenetic rendition of “6 Foot 7 Foot.” Rick Ross and Travis Barker rounded out the bill. The Blink-182 drummer was joined by Beastie Boys DJ Mixmaster Mike for a heart-racing set. Barker performed his set inside an oversize Ghetto Blaster radio as he pounded on the brass for the title track of his solo debut, Can a Drummer Get Some. Miami Don Rick Ross was as breezy as a Florida sunset. His 30 minutes included his breakout hits “Hustlin’ ” and “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast).” “I need a moment of silence,” Ross told the audience. “Life is a beautiful thing. There’s nothing more beautiful than life.” Wayne was just as effusive about his circumstances toward the end of the show. “Make some noise for Tupac,” he announced. “Make some noise for Biggie. Make some noise for my n—a Nate Dogg . Considering she quickly ascended to rap royalty after Weezy signed her to his Young Money roster, she owes the New Orleans rapper a debt of gratitude. Hip-hop’s Harajuku Barbie recently told MTV News that she has already recorded a verse for her mentor’s new album, Tha Carter IV, due later this year. “I recorded something for Carter IV, and I recorded something with the Birdman recently,” Nicki told MTV News. The Birdman she’s referring to is Bryan “Baby” Williams, Cash Money Records co-founder and CEO, and a recording artist in his own right. Baby’s new album, Bigger Than Life, is due this year as well. Minaj spoke confidently about Wayne’s next album, which has so far spawned a single and video in “6 Foot 7 Foot,” featuring Cory Gunz. “I think Carter IV is gonna just be exceptional, of course,” Nicki said. “I think Wayne is definitely on his grind crazy right now. But yep, my Carter IV verse has been handed in officially.” Over the weekend, “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez revealed that Wayne is featured on her next single “I’m Into You,” from her forthcoming Love? album. And on Monday (March 14), Wayne popped up on a rough version of Kanye West’s “All of the Lights (Remix)” that hit the Internet. As for Nicki and Weezy’s new song, fans may get a live preview soon. Minaj will be heading out on the road with Wayne, as well as Rick Ross, Mixmaster Mike and Travis Barker, for the I Am Music II Tour , which kicks off Friday in Buffalo, New York. Recently, Nicki Minaj revealed to fans via Twitter that she was shooting a new video however, intended on keeping the title of the song top secret. TMZ reports that model Toyin Koyejo was hired as the leading man for the video, however was removed from that position after he took to Twitter to give details on the video shoot and announce the name of the song; “Super Bass”. After Toyin revealed information on the new video via Twitter, a member of the crew angrily approached him and informed him that he had violated his confidentiality agreement by tweeting the information, and was almost fired on the spot! However, TMZ stated that after he apologized multiple times, he was removed from his role as the leading man in the video and placed in a background spot. Yikes! The teenagers of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All , or Odd Future for short (or OFWGKTA to get really lazy) have landed on the cover of Billboard Magazine, officially signaling to their fans that the secret is out. The cover is a major feat for a group of kids who have only released their music for free on the internet, and rap about the most depraved subjects sans apology. Top 9 Music Videos Of The 2000s Top 9 Music Videos Of The 1990s The group officially went from internet phenomenon to industry darlings after their February appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon where group members Tyler The Creator and Hodgy Beats ran around the set performing the song “Sandwitches.” In a recent interview with AlLindstrom.com , SRC Records founder Steve Rifkind, aka the man who signed the Wu-Tang Clan, Big Pun and Mobb Deep, has his eyes fixed on the group right now. “Somebody called me today and said you’ve got to sign [OFWGKTA],” he said. “And then you guys bring them up to me just now…I saw some videos for the first time this morning and I saw when they did the Jimmy Fallon show, I’m going after them hard. I think they’re brilliant. I don’t anything a comparison about Wu-Tang. I can see maybe because the music is just so raw, but what I saw I just fell in love with.” OFWGKTA’s de facto leader Tyler The Creator recently signed a one-off album deal with XL Recordings for the release of his forthcoming solo album, Goblin .  Group member Mellow Hype has also signed a deal with independent label Fat Possum Records.
