How Katy Perry Avoided A Sophomore Slump

Critics weigh in on pop star’s rise thanks to Teenage Dream . By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage In 2008, Katy Perry proclaimed she was One of the Boys , going around town kissing girls and “Waking Up in Vegas.” Then two years later, Perry released her triumphant sophomore effort, Teenage Dream , a spirited mix of sugary love ballads and feisty anthems. Many artists have fallen victim to the dreaded sophomore slump, delivering fans and critics a disappointing second album. Instead, Perry stuck to her pop guns and gave everyone what they wanted: fun, quirky pop songs. While her contemporaries were busy rapping, like Ke$ha , or making grandiose political statements, like Lady Gaga, Perry just wanted to have fun. She wanted her fans to dance around in daisy dukes, and it paid off: She had a string of #1 hits including “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream” and her empowerment anthem “Firework.” So, when MTV News asked a few critics just what it is that helped solidify Perry’s pop star status in 2010, they had this to say: Perry looks like a pop star, but isn’t as polished as most of them. Elliot Wilson of RapRadar.com explained, “She has a rock-chick kind of attitude, but at the same time she can pass for a pop princess. “What I like about Katy Perry is that she seems kind of rebellious. People want to peg what the artist should be, and then you see the artist’s growth, and I think that she’s challenging. I think she’s brash and bold.” Plus, over the course of the past 12 months, she’s used that persona to sell herself and her music. “She’s very good at the marketing side of things,” Noah Callahan of Complex explained. “She has a very clear aesthetic. It’s very digestible and understandable, and it doesn’t hurt that she’s very easy on the eyes.” Writer Julianne Esobado-Shepard credits Perry’s kooky persona as one of the reasons why she’s been so embraced by pop lovers. “She’s got hooks. Again, [her producer] Dr. Luke just kind of murdered it, especially with ‘Teenage Dream,’ ” she said. “She’s sort of a blank slate in a way. She’s like an avatar of what people think they want, which is again like boobs. The fact that she likes shooting things out of her boobs so much has really gone a long way for her career.” What do you like best about Katy Perry? Sound off below! Nicki Minaj, Trey Songz, More Share Their New Year’s Resolutions

Avril Lavigne wants to ‘be healthy’ and ‘focus hard.’ By Kara Warner Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News With all the 2010 wrap-up stories and year-end lists dominating these last few days, it’s time to start thinking beyond New Year’s Eve and into the new year. And you know what that means: New Year’s resolutions. The most popular vows generally revolve around health (weight loss, exercise, quitting smoking) and finance (spend less). However when MTV News caught up with a few of our favorite stars recently to find out what they resolve to do in 2011, their commitments were a bit more unique. “My New Year’s resolution is to stay true to myself,” “Bottoms Up” singer Trey Songz revealed. “Regardless of what anybody says, I’ll never let anybody else’s thoughts dictate that of my own.” “Probably just progress more as an actor,” said 12-year-old “Modern Family” scene-stealer Rico Rodriguez. Avril Lavigne had three broad goals in mind: “Be healthy, focus hard, make sure to see [my] family.” MTV’s own “Jersey Shore” standout Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino said his plans involve moving from the small screen to the big one. “[I might be] doing maybe a movie or something,” he teased. Chart-topping pink princess Nicki Minaj offered the most colorful response: “[I’ll be] touring around the world. It’s looking like the biggest, baddest, I don’t know … I should’ve had something better to say,” she began, and then invented a few words on the spot, for emphasis on just how big 2011 will be for the “Your Love” singer. “[I’m going to be the] biggest, baddest, boldest, booming-est, fearless-ocity-est, Pink Friday -est, girl,” she promised. Nicki Minaj Seeks Calm, Strong, Freaky Man

Nicki Minaj is single, and seeking. The rapper is featured in the latest issue of King (The Illest Men’s Magazine Ever!) and opens up to the publication about what she’s looking for in a man. To wit: “Someone who is calm, who is strong enough to not have to win every argument, who allows a woman to be her crazy self and someone with a conscience not to feel less of a man. Someone who is able to honor his woman but also bring out the freak in his woman.” Minaj also says she’d love to make the transition into acting. Her dream role? “Someone in a Tim Burton movie, where I get dressed up and painted and crazy.” Nicki as the next Johnny Depp? We’d pay to see that.

‘I would love to go out with Nicki,’ singer says on Ustream. By Mawuse Ziegbe Keyshia Cole Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images As she preps for a tour to support her latest release, Calling All Hearts, Keyshia Cole is calling up some of her soulful friends to possibly hit the road with her next year. The “Long Way Down” songstress took to Ustream on Tuesday, when her album dropped, to chop it up with fans, and mentioned she plans to head out on a trek in the spring but hasn’t yet decided on an R&B-heavy tour roster or a hip-hop/soul outing alongside Young Money diva Nicki Minaj . “[I’ll go on tour] in March. We’ll probably start promoting sometime in January, probably the end of January. We’re trying to figure out who I’m gonna go on the road with. I had a conversation with Monica about a week ago about it and I told her I would love for her to come, and Faith [Evans] and Melanie Fiona and also Tank — just to add some kind of other flavor in there. But if not, if we don’t do that tour, then it will probably be me and Nicki Minaj,” she said. “I mean, I would love to go out with Nicki, so we’ll see which one happens.” The songstress also opened about her relationship with her “I Ain’t Thru” collaborator, Minaj , explaining that the two can relate due to their hardscrabble backgrounds. Cole, who is four albums into her career, said she often doles out props to Minaj as the lyricist continues her ascent to superstardom. “We’re cool, we’re buddies,” she said. “I see things on TV and I just call her to say congratulations, and stuff like that. I’ll send her an email. I think she’s great. I got love for Nicki. To be honest, she’s a young girl that comes up the same kind of way I came up. We can relate in so many different ways, I’m very proud of her. Who do you want to see Keyshia Cole hit the road with? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Keyshia Cole Nicki Minaj

Drake Calls Nicki Minaj’s Breakout Year ‘Incredible’

‘It’s amazing now to see her come into her own,’ he tells MTV News on set of ‘Moment 4 Life’ video. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News The Young Money triumvirate of Lil Wayne , Drake and Nicki Minaj had a banner year filled with successful albums, buzzed about moments onstage and chart-toppers. Drake compared the success of his and Minaj’s debuts with Weezy’s opening-week sales of Tha Carter III , saying each subsequent project further cemented the collective’s status. “I think it’s crazy that somehow, some higher power brought all these individuals together,” Drake told MTV News on the set of Minaj’s “Moment 4 Life” video. “I remember being on the [tour] bus when Wayne played me Tha Carter III , which went on to sell a million copies in one week. Then it was Thank Me Later . It was this big pressure, and that went on to sell what it did. “And now,” he continued, “to think of the girl that I used to ride the bus with — and that’s what she was to me: this girl that I rode the bus with. I was like, ‘Female rap?’ And I’m being dead honest with you. [I thought,] ‘Man, it’s been a while since there’s been a female rapper, and I’m curious to see how this works.’ “It’s not that I didn’t believe,” he added. “And she was probably looking at me like, ‘This Jew from Canada: I don’t know.’ ” And now, after the successful debut of Minaj’s Pink Friday , the Toronto lyricist said he couldn’t be happier for the “Right Thru Me” star. “It’s amazing now to see her come into her own, build this brand and persona,” he said. “It’s incredible.” Were you a Young Money fan this year?
