Nicki Minaj’s Roman Reloaded Was Initially Hard-Core Rap

But the pop-heavy LP is ‘a lot better than how we planned,’ Nicki’s pal-turned-co-executive producer Safaree ‘SB’ Samuels tells MTV News. By Sowmya Krishnamurthy, with reporting by Rob Markman Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded Photo: Universal Nicki Minaj ‘s right-hand man Safaree “SB” Samuels took on another role for his longtime friend when he signed on as a co-executive producer on her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. When MTV News caught up with SB, he explained how he made sure everything from “A to Z was done.” Samuels said his tasks on the project included scouting for beats and keeping in touch with producers to make sure deadlines were met. When asked how he helped Nicki to strike a balance between hip-hop and pop, SB revealed that the album was initially skewed toward rap. “In the beginning, we was gonna make it some rap spittin’ sh– and it was going to have a couple of songs that were going to be the ‘Super Bass’-es and joints like that,” he revealed. “But it ended up working out a lot better than how we planned.” SB went on to gush about working with Hit Boy, whose production highlights include Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “N—as in Paris.” After hearing just one beat, both Nicki and SB thought “We need more!” Hit Boy sent around six great beats, and they decided on two for the songs “Come on a Cone” and “I Am Your Leader,” which features Cam’ron and Rick Ross. (Incidentally, those are both SB’s favorites on the album.) But on the topic of crossover appeal and whether Nicki has deserted her rap roots , SB couldn’t disagree more. “She’s still doing her rap sh–, she’s still doing her crossover sh–,” he said. “When you a star, you a star. You can’t deny it.” Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded debuted at #1 this week, selling 253,000 copies in its first week on the Billboard albums chart. Nicki’s debut, Pink Friday, debuted at #2 in December 2010 on sales of 375,000. Do you think Nicki has gone too pop? Sound off in the comments below! Nicki Minaj Turns Good Friday To Pink Friday At Secret Show

Young Money MC rocks her hometown with a surprise concert in the middle of New York’s Times Square. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj performs at Times Square Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Good Friday all of a sudden became Pink Friday when Nicki Minaj (and alter ego Roman) took the stage in Times Square to promote her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, and the release of the remixed “Starships” video with DJ Doorly. The clip doesn’t hit YouTube until Saturday, but on Friday (April 6), Nicki riled up more than 1,000 fans who gathered to see the reigning rap queen rock an unannounced show, sponsored by Nokia . It was 7:30 p.m. ET when the counter on the stage clock hit zero and the blue curtain revealed the Female Weezy in all her glory. Dressed in a blond wig, white collared shirt and black one-piece with tiger-striped stockings, Nicki set things off properly with her current top-five single “Starships.” Fans threw their hands up and danced, releasing all their anxiety from the hours that they waited. “Who’s in love? Is anybody in love?” the Young Money star asked before launching into her Chris Brown-assisted midtempo “Right By My Side.” There was no Breezy, but Nicki made sure to bring that boom-ba-boom-boom with her when the beat for the infectious “Super Bass” dropped. The Harajuku Barbie danced and rapped, encouraging all her Barbz to sing along. “It’s an honor for me to be here tonight. I’m from New York,” she said before announcing to the crowd that they will be filmed and that the footage will be used in her new “Starships” DJ Doorly remix video. With only three songs performed, the show sure was short, but Nicki made sure everyone had a sweet time. What’s your favorite Nicki Minaj song? Let us know in the comments! Nicki Minaj Warns She’ll Never Be ‘One-Dimensional’

‘I went from being a caricature in people’s eyes to becoming someone with a lot of layers,’ Minaj tells Shade 45’s ‘Sway in the Morning.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj Photo: Slaven Vlasic/ Getty Images There’s more to Nicki Minaj than just a pink wig and her funny voices. Rap’s reigning queen has evolved from a budding New York MC to an omnipresent figure in music and pop culture. She’s come a long way since her 2007 Playtime Is Over mixtape. “I think I went from being a caricature in people’s eyes to becoming someone with a lot of layers,” Nicki told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway when she appeared on his “Sway in the Morning” Shade 45 radio show on Tuesday. Nicki spoke with Sway and co-host Devi Dev about a range of topics — from her over-the-top 2012 Grammy performance to working with Madonna — but Nicki seemed most eager to emphasize that as many strides as she’s made in her career, her superstar qualities were always there on the inside. “You just gotta realize that I’m never gonna be one-dimensional,” she said. “Even my core fans I think, at times, thought I was one-dimensional when I was doing mixtapes. However, even on the mixtapes, I was singing and I did a song called ‘Can Anybody Hear Me’ on one of my mixtapes where I was singing and talking about being a female rapper and trying to get signed.” “Can Anybody Hear Me” appeared on her 2009 tape Beam Me Up Scotty and featured Nicki spitting about her difficulty securing a record deal. Funny when you think about all of the success she’s now obtained. “When it rains, it pours for real/ Def Jam said I’m no Lauryn Hill/ You can’t rap and sing on the same CD/ The public won’t get it, they got A.D.D.,” Nicki rapped back in ’09. Minaj has since broken down those barriers and her latest album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, is the ultimate brush-off to naysayers who once told Nicki what she couldn’t do. “It’s just been peeling back the layers and now I think the ultimate layer was me saying, ‘Now I’m gonna do whatever kind of music I want to do and you’re free to not like it,’ ” she said. “This new album, Roman Reloaded, when I tell you I am not nervous, I am not fearful; all of those emotions left.” The Young Money superstar’s second album balances her hard-core rap sensibilities with pop tracks produced by RedOne and Dr Luke. Critics have been lukewarm , but Nicki doesn’t want to choose between the two distinct musical genres; it’s all derived from a feeling, she said. “My story is not gonna always entail a hard hip-hop beat, but sometimes it is,” she explained. “A lot of the tracks on this album are just a hard hip-hop beat and just spittin’ and that’s why I enlisted some people like [Cam’ron] and 2 Chainz and the legendary Nas.” What do you think of Roman Reloaded ? Tell us on our Facebook page! To celebrate the release of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, we will be examining the “Evolution of Nicki Minaj” throughout the week.
