J. Cole Is A Top-Five Finalist For ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010’!

Winner will be revealed on MTV2’s ‘Sucker Free Summit’ Sunday at noon. By Shaheem Reid J. Cole Photo: Roc Nation It is here: As promised, the top-five vote-getters in our poll for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” will be revealed this week. These are the artists you guys voted for over the past month, and we can’t express enough how overwhelmed we were by your participation in this project. More than 200,000 votes came in, and they were tallied as of midnight Friday. Keep in mind, the unveiling of the names this week are the top five, but in no particular order. The winner of the “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” as voted on by the MTV News audience, will be revealed Sunday (July 25) at noon on the “Sucker Free Summit.” Chosen One: J. Cole Rising in the Ranks : Jermaine Cole was focused, then lost it, and now his vision is as lucid as ever. The 25-year-old rapper was no ordinary jock in high school, back in his hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Just like fans applaud him when he performs concerts, J. was highly acclaimed by his high school teachers for his academia. Pretty soon, the students began to love him as well. He cut his teeth in freestyle ciphers at football games. Rather than accepting a scholarship locally, he wanted to kill two birds with one stone: go to the media mecca of New York City to pursue music while gaining higher education at the esteemed St. John’s University. But the allure of the bright lights and all the other trappings of the big city put J. in a chokehold. His first two years in school, he partied and chased girls, but he finally snapped out of his haze his junior year, graduating magna cum laude. Cole gained the following he has now by showing off his ever-evolving lyricism with the mixtapes The Come Up and The Warm Up. In between those projects, Cole signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Like Kanye West, Cole was first introduced to Jay as a producer, but Hov quickly discovered J.’s blue-chip verbal acumen. Cole got the ultimate co-sign, appearing on Jigga’s “A Star Is Born” from Blueprint 3 last year. Now with “Who Dat” rising as the first look from his still-untitled debut LP, the fans are looking at Cole as one to crack the mainstream hard any minute. Early Insight : “Anything I do, whether it’s a freestyle I drop or [a song], man, I feel like I got a lot to prove — not just to people, but to myself,” Cole said. “I’ve been wanting this a long time. I didn’t want to just get a deal. I didn’t want to just put out an album. I want to be here for a long time. I’ve got big goals and big dreams, even beyond where I’m at right now.” Blistering Ballistics : “The mind state of a winner/ When you thinkin’ bout summertime/ I’m thinkin’ ’bout the winter/ When you thinkin’ ’bout breakfast/ I’m heatin’ up my dinner/ I was plottin’ this moment back when y’all was ridin’ spinners/ Now I’m a menace/ God as my witness, with this pen I’m insane, yup/ Hungry like the n—a who ain’t got the taste of fame yet/ Cloud told me, ‘Ain’t you Roc? Well, where the f— yo chain at?’ ” — from Cole’s “Who Dat” Forecast : Cole hasn’t hit the home run smash out of the park yet, but he’s laying the all-too-essential groundwork to establish himself as not just at the top of his weight class as far as lyricism goes, but his live shows have displayed his potential to be one of the great performers in the coming years. Win, lose or draw with his album, Cole is banking on himself. He says there will be no features on his debut, because he has too much to say. MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon! Busta Rhymes: Nicki Minaj ‘Stands Alone’ Among ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’ Finalists

‘She’s already doing everything that it takes to get to the next level,’ the animated MC says of the Young Money Barbie. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News With a bunch of memorable features already under her belt, a BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and a surprise #1 hit with “Your Love” , Nicki Minaj is reveling in her status as the queen of the hitmaking Young Money crew. Now, as a top-five finalist for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” Minaj is proving she’s truly unstoppable this year. For many of her fans, including fellow animated New York MC Busta Rhymes, there’s not much more Nicki can do to secure her position as one of the hottest rappers around. “I think she’s already doing everything that it takes to get to the next level. She’s standing alone — there is no two Nicki Minajs right now,” Busta told MTV News. Bussa Bus credits the Young Money Barbie’s success to “her diversity, as far as what she’s able to display style-wise.” Busta explained that a lot of rappers can become stagnant when it comes to their style, an occupational hazard he hasn’t seen Nicki fall victim to yet. “A lot of the times we get stuck into these characters where we kind of become slaves to those characters; we sound a particular kind of a way all of the time,” he explained. “I’m never saying that it’s not a good thing. We should always trademark certain things about us so that people can identify with it off the top. But it’s always good to be able to show people how diversified you are and what you’re capable of outside your comfort zone,” Busta said. “It feels like she ain’t got no problem displaying that.” And while many Nicki fans would agree that Minaj has the music game on lock, Busta said that the star should try to shut down Hollywood as well. “I probably think the one thing she need to do that she ain’t did yet was show up in a couple of these movies,” Busta said, adding, “and it’s a wrap. She get a couple of these movies and steal the scenes that she’s in the same way she do it on these records, she going to put the nail in the coffin with that.” MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon! Drake, Nicki Minaj Open Up About His ‘Crush’ On Her

Drake says the MCs have a ‘playful relationship.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj and Drake Photo: Young Money/Cash Money Young Money stars Nicki Minaj and Drake are two of the hottest MCs in hip-hop, and their relationship has some thinking that the pair are hooking up in ways beyond a label affiliation. The stars were candid about their feelings for each other in recent interviews with MTV2’s “Sucker Free Countdown” — and addressed rumors that their relationship isn’t strictly platonic. “Me and Nicki have a really playful relationship,” Drake told DJ Envy. “When I was on tour … I saw Nicki for the first time and, like, literally fell in love. She had this snap-back hat on that said ‘Minaj.’ She used to wear that every single day. She was like a theater student and she was so cold at rapping.” Drake — who rushed to Minaj’s defense last week after Lil’ Kim said some untoward things about her — said that before breaking through, he had to contend with her somewhat icy demeanor. “I remember one of the first nights that we were out in Miami and I went to Jerry’s [Famous Deli]. I was like [to Minaj], ‘You want food, you hungry?,’ and she was like, ‘Yeah, I want some food.’ I was like, ‘I’m in, we gon’ eat food together.’ I came to her door and she took the food and shut the door in my face! I was just like, ‘Man, this is gonna be a long road for us.’ ” But Drake maintains that his feelings for her have always been genuine. “I’ve always really, actually, really had a crush on her, always really loved her, and she’s always just looked at me as, like, her little brother.” Envy pointed to a line on the track “Miss Me” from Drake’s Thank Me Later LP — which is released Tuesday — where he says he wants to put a ring on it as proof of his true feelings for Minaj. “I love Nicki Minaj/ I told her I’d admit it/ I hope one day we get married just to say we f—ing did it/ And girl, I’m f—ing serious/ I’m with it if you with it/ ‘Cause your verses turn me on and your pants are mighty fitted,” Drake spits. But Drizzy insisted the lyric is not that deep. “That line on the album is just me playing with her. I’ll be playing with her for years until she’s ready to go, and then I’m ready,” he added. For her part, Minaj shrugged off any notion that she and the Young Money heartthrob are more than friends. She giggled when Envy broached the subject but then immediately shut down rumors. “Drake does not have a crush on me,” Minaj assured Envy. When Envy brought up the “Miss Me” lyric, Minaj responded, “Drake knows how to get you guys’ attention.” As one of the most sought-after MCs in the game right now, Minaj is probably getting stepped to all the time. But when Envy asked how dudes should approach the diva, she dismissed the idea of a relationship. “I don’t want to be hollered at right now. I just don’t. I wanna go and hibernate and coop up somewhere and be alone,” said Minaj, adding that she’s waiting until after her debut hits shelves before she gets scooped up. “Then maybe we can talk.” Catch more Nicki Minaj with DJ Envy on the “Sucker Free Summer Countdown” from Boston’s 94.5 Summer Jam, this Sunday, June 20, at noon ET only on MTV2. Diddy On Lil’ Kim/ Nicki Minaj Flap: ‘It Ain’t No Beef’

‘I love Lil’ Kim,’ the mogul tells the BBC, adding, ‘Nicki never did anything to her. ‘ By Mawuse Ziegbe Diddy Photo: Getty Images Lil’ Kim may not be feeling Diddy or Nicki Minaj , who Diddy is rumored to be managing, but the rapper and hip-hop exec says he’s still cool with the Queen Bee. Kim’s recent outbursts about the Young Money Barbie and the Bad Boy mogul have been grabbing headlines, but Diddy isn’t letting the star’s words get to him, saying he still has mad love for Kim. “I want to say I love Lil’ Kim, man,” Diddy told the BBC’s Tim Westwood on Friday (June 11). “I’m sorry that she’s mad. I never would have thought that by me working with another artist that she would take it the wrong way. But if she’s taking it the wrong way it ain’t meant like that. Nicki never did anything to her.” Kim has sounded off about Minaj in a variety of outlets, including a recent interview posted on ThisIs50.com . “For the last year, she’s been subliminally taking shots at me, subliminally taking shots at the other girls in the industry. I mean, come on, we read that interview where she said, ‘Oh, being that the other rap chicks in the game ain’t got sh– to do right now, when I’m by the pool, they can feed me grapes,’ I remember that sh–,” Kim told the website. “The last thing she did that was very subliminal, ‘Oh, did I kill the Queen?’ and Puffy is sitting right next to her vibing with that bullsh–. Come on, we ain’t stupid. It’s obvious that she likes my music and that she’s trying to mimic what I’m doing, she’s subliminally busting shots.” Kim also talked about her feelings to Philadelphia radio personality Kendra G . “All females that come in the game, we all need to stick together, and I always try my best to embrace them. But what happens is when you come into the game and realize that I’m not going away and my fans are still here and they can’t just step over me. They can’t just step on me and then they’re kinda like, they get upset and then they don’t want to be my friend anymore and I think that’s really childish, you know what I’m saying? It’s stupid because all I ask for is to be respected — pay homage at the end of the day.” While Diddy maintained his love and respect for Kim, he went on to defend Minaj, insisting that the Queens hitmaker has shown the Queen Bee nothing but respect. “She ain’t trying to swagger-jack or say nothing negative about her. I just think that Kim needs to just understand that Nicki as a whole has always been respectful of her and Nicki’s not trying to be her,” Diddy said. “I ain’t gonna make no apologies for working with Nicki Minaj. [She is] somebody that’s never said anything negative about Kim and just really has always, in my eyes, has paid homage to Kim. She’s a different MC. They don’t even talk about the same thing. If you’re like a connoisseur of MCs and you a specialist — like what Kim has talked about and what Nicki talks about — they don’t talk about the same things.” The mogul also suggested that Kim’s vocal attacks on the “Massive Attack” rapper are a ploy to build buzz as she prepares to drop a new project. “Kim is gonna be a MC and MCs when they coming back out a lot of times they like to talk crazy and do what they do, ” he said. “At the end of the day, everybody respects Lil’ Kim for being the Queen Bee.” Diddy may be cooking up some heat in the lab with Nicki Minaj, but despite their budding professional relationship, the hip-hop Bad Boy continues to maintain his support for both MCs. “We riding with Nicki and we still riding with Kim,” he said. “We love and respect the days and the history that we’ve had with Lil’ Kim. It ain’t no beef.” Related Artists Diddy Lil’ Kim Nicki Minaj

Drake, Nicki Minaj Talk Jay-Z And Lil Wayne At Madison Square Garden

‘It was the stuff that dreams are made of,’ Minaj says of appearing on the stage with Jay-Z and her Young Money boss. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by MTV News staff Drake Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Lil Wayne and his Young Money cohorts Drake and Nicki Minaj stormed the stage at Madison Square Garden two weeks ago for a guest turn during Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour . The Roc Nation head called the spot “fantastic.” Turns out, Drake and Nicki Minaj thought so too. Young Jeezy, who welcomed the trio to his set, first introduced Nicki Minaj to thunderous applause. The Queens native said that prior to the concert, she and everyone else in Wayne’s camp were spending time with the rapper after he learned he had an extra day of freedom. Lil Wayne was scheduled to turn himself in to begin his prison stint that afternoon. A fire at the courthouse , however, prevented Wayne’s sentencing. With some time to kill, the crew got a phone call to put the plans in motion. “We were just talking to Wayne and he was being his crazy self,” Nicki told MTV News. “I got a call from Gee [Wayne’s co-manager and former executive at Roc-A-Fella] and the first name I heard was Jay-Z and I thought, ‘There’s no way Jay-Z approved me to be on this show.’ And I was like, ‘Do I want to?’ I’m on the next thing, smoking. I canceled meeting that day and the next day. “Madison Square Garden? I’m from New York,” she continued. “This means the world to me — to be there with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Drake. It was the stuff that dreams are made of for a girl. Girls aren’t usually in those unique little circles.” Drake heaped praise on his boss, Lil Wayne, for sharing his extra day (that turned into an extra week) with his fans. “It was a moment where people thought Wayne had gone in and the surprise was he had an extra day, and a selfless individual came out and showed up for the people of New York,” Drake told MTV News. “The city he got convicted in, of all places. It was a great night.” The “Best I Ever Had” MC even joked about violating Jay-Z’s all-black dress code that was set for the festivities. “That’s just who I am,” Drake said, laughing about his all-white getup. “Young Angel.” Related Videos Nicki Minaj And Drake Speak On Their Surprise Blueprint 3 Show Related Artists Drake Nicki Minaj

Six Feet Under 1:8

It’s nice that the show labels the episode numbers itself.  Because I didn’t blog about the last few, I forgot what number I was on! I loved the relationship dynamics David had with everyone in this episode.  It’s great to see him relaxing a little and showing the more human side.  I think this episode did a lot to show the versatility of Michael C. Hall as well…but I am slightly biased due to my adoration of him. Also, they made a reference to BTVS in this episode.  They quickly compared it to Dawson’s Creek , but I will overlook that.  No way will I ever admit that the two shows are anything alike.  Full disclosure: I haven’t ever seen an episode of DC, but I don’t like anyone in it so I don’t think I need to
