Bad Movies We Love: Forrest Gump

Happy Oscar nominations , babies. You got what you wanted, though you have to throw those gold-plated, NSFW Andrew Garfield valentines in the trash. It could be worse. You could be living in 1994, when the Academy honored not Pulp Fiction , The Shawshank Redemption , or my darling Quiz Show with a Best Picture victory, but a staggering sh*t fortress of offensive “whimsicality” called Forrest Gump . You saw it. It’s dumb. Loony. It’s got a lot of nerve. But here’s a secret you and I share: We’re both attracted to bastards, and Forrest Gump ‘s the slimiest john I know. Let’s love it.

Just when you start to think Nicolas Cage has run out of surprises, here comes a slew of new photos from the Turkey and Romania sets of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance . I can happily report that these photos have almost nothing to do with the movie itself, and much more to do with how Nicolas Cage spends his leisure time on-set. Yes, this new installment of Ghost Rider is supposed to be a complete reboot — and it has those fun Crank directors on board — but I honestly can’t imagine the finished product being more entertaining than these nine random photos of Cage being Cage. Check them out after the jump.

REVIEW: Director Peter Weir Returns Via Bold, Bumpy Way Back

The kind of filmmaking excitement that director Peter Weir brings to movies is bone deep. It doesn’t emerge in the flashy flourishes that come off as compulsively exhibitionistic — the “Dude, Where’s My Camera Car?” school. Instead, in the potent and dream-like The Way Back , Weir’s subtle control is evident by the way he uses sound, embracing the allure and menace it simultaneously evokes. And we’re reminded how crushingly obvious many directors are about incorporating the aural aspect of their work; generally when the audience is aware of it, it’s used like a blunt object by horror film directors.

Michelle Williams Will Watch Brokeback Mountain with Daughter Matilda

Don’t shoot the messenger; this is what qualifies as news in the lazy hours before New Year’s Eve. In an interview with Angeleno magazine, Blue Valentine star Michelle Williams says she plans on one day watching Brokeback Mountain with daughter Matilda. “I was just an actor who happened to be lucky enough to be in the right place, and it was the place where I met Matilda’s father, and that is a lot,” she said, referring to the late Heath Ledger. “It was a lot. And it will be a lot for Matilda too, when she gets around to watching it. I will watch it with her, when she’s ready. It is hard to imagine what that would feel like, but one day, yes, we will watch it together.” Wonder what the Steak Eaters will think of that one. [ PopSugar ]
