New York Giants football legend and morning talk-show personality Michael Strahan and his fiancee of five years, Nicole Murphy, called it quits Friday. The split was an amicable one as their busy careers ultimately doomed the seven-year love affair for the beloved Live With Kelly and Michael host. “They love each other very much, but with the distance and work schedule it has been hard to maintain the relationship,” Strahan’s rep confirms. Strahan, 42, and Murphy, 46, a model and star of VH1’s show Hollywood Exes (her ex being Eddie Murphy) started dating in 2007 and got engaged in 2009. The former duo had nine children between them, five of them Murphy’s by Eddie. Strahan has four kids from two ex-wives, Jean Muggli and Wanda Hutchins. The lovebirds’ careers turned them into a bi-coastal couple, as Strahan spends most of his time in New York while Murphy travels back and forth to L.A. Because of their hectic schedules, the two were thinking about eloping. “We might just have to run off and elope,” Murphy told talk-show host Wendy Williams in April. “We’ve been busy though, this has been crazy.” “The man’s got 20 jobs right now,” Murphy said. “He’s just busy.” Too busy, it turned out, as they announced the breakup Friday. Strahan became almost more high profile since he retired from the NFL after the 2007 season, when he helped lead the Giants to the Super Bowl title in his last game. That legacy will be enshrined permanently in the Pro Football Hall of Fame this evening, when New York’s #92 receives the highest honor in his sport. Michael played 15 seasons at defensive end, recording double-digit sacks in six, including 2001, when he set the single-season record of 22.5. Black Unemployment Rate Remains Above 11 Percent Although the unemployment rate is reported to be steadily decreasing overall throughout the U.S., it still remains in the double-digits within the black community. via News One The overall unemployment rate ticked up to 6.2 percent in July from 6.1 percent. The unemployment rate for African-Americans remains in double digit figures, rising to 11.4 percent. During the six straight months that have topped 200,000 job gains, more people have looked for work. In July, an additional 329,000 began looking, yet only 131,000 jobs were added, according to the Labor Department’s survey of households. A consequence of the influx of job-seekers last month is that the unemployment rate rose for women, African-Americans, high school graduates and people with some college experience. But the overall trend for the past 12 months is clear: The unemployment rate is steadily dropping for almost everyone. Hopefully the overall unemployment rate will continue to decrease and these effects will have a positive impact on the numbers in the black community.
Say it ain’t so! Nicole Murphy Calls Off Engagement To Michael Strahan After five years of nearly-wedded bliss , Nicole Murphy has decided to split from Michael Strahan. Apparently the former football star is just too busy to maintain a healthy relationship. Via MailOnline : Michael Strahan’s fiance Nicole Murphy has ended the couple’s five year engagement. The pair started dating in 2007 and the former New York Giants proposed two years later. ‘They love each other very much, but with the distance and work schedule it has been hard to maintain the relationship,’ a spokesperson for the model and TV star told People magazine on Friday. The 42-year-old’s TV career has certainly increased of late. The LIVE! with Kelly and Michael host took on a part-time role with Good Morning America in April. The split comes just a day before Strahan will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Awww, we really thought these two might make it! Los Angeles’ premiere hotel rooftop, LUXE, hosted some of the greatest names in sports honoring Football Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders, at the 3rd annual Champions for Choice event for the AFC in conjunction with the 2014 ESPY Awards. The event was hosted by boxing champion Laila Ali, WNBA and six-time Olympian Lisa Leslie, NBA Veteran Jalen Rose and sports expert for ESPN Stephen A. Smith. You cannot be f***ing serious … Oscar Grant’s Friends Settle Lawsuit With BART For $175,000 Via AP Five friends of Oscar Grant, the man who was fatally shot by a San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer, have reached a deal to settle a federal lawsuit against the agency, officials said. Jack Bryson Jr., Nigel Bryson, Michael Greer, Carlos Reyes and Fernando Anicete Jr. will split $175,000 as part of the settlement reached late last month, their attorney John Burris said Tuesday. The BART board approved the settlement May 8, BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said Wednesday. The men filed a federal civil rights lawsuit for $1.5 million in 2009 claiming excessive force and illegal detainment. Burris said Tuesday that the men are relieved the case is over. “This closes a very traumatic and tragic chapter for these young men,” he said. “Unfortunately, they will never get over witnessing their friend’s death.” Trost said the settlement closes the case for a “considerably smaller amount compared to what would have been a long and costly trial if allowed to move forward.” The five men were detained on BART’s Fruitvale Station platform in Oakland along with Grant, who was shot and killed by then-BART police officer Johannes Mehserle. If you’ll remember… Grant’s mother, Wanda Johnson, and Grant’s young daughter, Tatiana, also received financial settlements from BART totaling $2.8 million as a result of the shooting. That brings Oscar Grant’s life value to a grand total of just under $3 million. At the risk of equating different people’s pain and suffering, isn’t it sad that these 5 young men, who actually WITNESSED their friend being gunned down, were only awarded such a paltry settlement?
