‘Amercian Idol’ Exec Says ‘Legend’ Steven Tyler Will Be Good TV

‘You never know what he’s going to say. That, as a TV producer, you’re interested in,’ Nigel Lythgoe tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Matt Elias Nigel Lythgoe Photo: MTV News One thing that fans of “American Idol” can count on each season is a level of unpredictability, particularly once the show narrows the contestants down to 20 and the performance rounds and weekly eliminations begin. This season has upped the unpredictability factor in the form of new and potentially wayward, wacky judge Steven Tyler. When MTV News caught up with the reality show’s returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe , we asked if he was worried about having to censor the Aerosmith frontman. “Oh yes, [I have] every worry about that,” Lythgoe readily admitted about Tyler’s sometimes-potty mouth. “But we’re on a delay, and he’s already done it. And then he forgets that he’s not allowed to say it, so he’ll say, ‘F—! Did I say f—? Oh f—. Sorry mate.’ ” Lythgoe — who also appears as a judge on Fox’s other reality talent show, “So You Think You Can Dance”— has said that a large part of Tyler’s appeal is not being able to predict what he’ll say or do. “He has come through that whole rock and roll circus,” said Lythgoe of Tyler , whom he also hopes will perform on the show, along with judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, at some point. “Why wouldn’t you want a legend there? You never know what he’s going to say. That, as a TV producer, you’re interested in.” As for 62-year-old rock icon Tyler , he seemed genuinely excited about the entire process but with one concern as the show prepares for its season 10 kickoff. “The part that’s a little difficult is judging young kids,” he said this week. “It took me a couple minutes to get into the role of that, but I’ve grown accustomed to it and it’s fun and I get to sit next to J.Lo and Randy taking [the] you-know-what out of everybody.” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com tonight at 10 p.m. ET. Jennifer Lopez: An ‘American Idol’ Cheat Sheet

Catch up on all the dish about new judge J.Lo before season 10 begins. By Jocelyn Vena “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez Photo: Tony Duran / FOX Jennifer Lopez has long been a triple-threat, having conquered music, movies and everything in between. This week, “Jenny From the Block” adds a new gig to her extensive resume: “American Idol” judge . On Wednesday night (January 18), as the new season of the hit Fox reality series kicks off, fans are eager to see what the one-time “In Living Color” “fly girl” will bring to the mix, alongside fellow newbie Steven Tyler and “Idol” vet Randy Jackson. Since September’s announcement that she got the gig, Lopez has made it clear she brings one thing to the table: “tough love.” “I think there are definitely better ways to get your point across [than being cruel],” she said at last year’s announcement. “I’ve mentored on the show before, so I think people have seen that and kinda can feel how I’ll be — or maybe they’ll be surprised.” Later that month, Lopez used three words to describe her judging style : “tough, easy and fair.” “I don’t want to let anybody really great [not make it through] because they’re nervous, and not get to see what they could have did,” Lopez said. “They’re going to come in here and be a little bit nervous in the beginning, and then you realize, ‘Wow, that person is really talented.’ So we work them a little bit more than maybe you’ve seen in the past. We’ve given them more of a chance. “We know what it’s like to be out there,” Lopez added. “I was energized by all of their spirit when they come in here, and they’re so hopeful about what could happen and how it could be.” That same week, “AI” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe posted a photo online of the new judges sitting at the table with “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest and Jackson. With the release of her new song, “On the Floor” (featuring Pitbull, produced by RedOne), and the new season ready to kick off, Lopez revealed she’s really meshing with her fellow judges. “I love everybody,” she said back in October. “It’s such a machine. It runs like clockwork. … Everything’s great!” How do you think Jennifer Lopez will be as an “Idol” judge? Sound off in the comments below! J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets: The Weinstein Brothers Have Their Priorities Straight

Tensions were running high at Movieline HQ in the lead up to our Golden Globes liveblog on Sunday night , because there stood a chance that the NFL playoff game between the New York Jets and New England Patriots might run past 8 p.m. on the East Coast. Naturally, we planned to flip over the Globes (or at least that’s what we told everyone), but it appears Harvey and Bob Weinstein had a different idea.

Mary Murphy on Returning to So You Think You Can Dance and Whether She Watched Last Season

While last season of So You Think You Can Dance brought us the verve, artistry, and passion we’ve long expected of TV’ s finest reality competition , it lacked that locomotive of chutzpah and love named Mary Murphy. The 52-year-old ballroom champ and choreographer lends a professional, yet maternal conviction to a show that thrives on supportive energy — and better yet, she’s an addicting presence on the judges’ panel. Last week, Fox announced that Murphy would return to the show for its eighth season this summer, displacing Mia Michaels and rejoining Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman. Phew, y’all.

Mia Michaels Out As Judge On So You Think You Can Dance. Thank God.

It’s not just American Idol that’s been shaking up the judges’ panel. On Nigel Lythgoe’s other Fox reality show, So You Think You Can Dance , they’ve been hitting puree on the panel for a few seasons now. First they installed director/Miley Cyrus sex device Adam Shankman in the third judges’ chair that had previously been free-floating. Then they booted shrieking Mary Murphy for choreographer Michaels. But now, according to E!, Michaels is dunzo and Murphy is returning, and in my opinion, that’s a good thing.

In Memory of American Idol’s Semifinal Rounds: 10 Incredible Performances

Nigel Lythgoe is one of my favorite forces in reality television, but he announced a big mistake today: American Idol ‘s glorious semifinal rounds are no longer . Instead, this season’s live performances will begin with Top 12 week, and we’ll also be forced to watch as contestants compete in “music video” competitions. Horrifying, indeed. Without the semifinals, Idol loses so much great drama, intimacy, and some of the best performances in the season. Without further ado, let’s show Nigel Lythgoe how much he messed up and revisit Idol ‘s most incredible (and sometimes cringe-worthy) semifinal moments.

‘American Idol’ Revamp Includes Axing Top 24, Adding Video Competition

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe also says Randy Jackson is ‘pulling his weight’ for the upcoming season. By Gil Kaufman Nigel Lythgoe Photo: Mathew Imaging/ Wireimage Call it the 10-Year Itch. A decade into its run, “American Idol” is getting a face-lift courtesy of returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. When the 10th season kicks off on January 12, contestants will be faced with a series of new challenges that will make the reshuffling of the judging panel seem tame by comparison. According to an interview with TVGuide.com , Lythgoe has plans to streamline the show while giving contestants challenges that will potentially better prepare them for pop stardom. Among the fresh wrinkles being thrown at the aspiring singers are contests to make the best music videos and promote themselves and a chance to work with a band and dancers for an awards show-style performance. The biggest tweak, however, has to do with the mechanics of the show, namely the elimination of the round of 24 that shrinks the cast down to the final 12. “I didn’t think [the top 24] were very good, I was bored with them by the time they got there,” Lythgoe said. It was not specified, however, if the adjustment means that judges will pick the top 12 or what will replace the shows that formerly made up the early audience voting rounds. So far, Lythgoe said new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are settling in to their gigs and taking the job very seriously. “They both listen intently and don’t make glib remarks,” he said. “They give honest critiques.” At the same time, he noted that sole remaining judge Randy Jackson, best known up until now for his mostly lightweight, catchphrase-heavy critiques, has upped his game. “Randy is pulling his weight,” Lythgoe said. “He really has stepped up. He’s essentially come out of himself. He’s enjoying being in that position.” Among the other new aspects contestants — who can now be as young as 15 — will face are theme weeks that will cover certain decades rather than the catalogs of popular artists and a new in-house mentor in the form of Interscope Geffen A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine. American Idol Won’t Let This Elton John Thing Go

The once and current American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has a bee in his bonnet about Elton John becoming the newest judge on Idol and he simply will not take no for an answer. Even though Elton’s publicist declared that, “There’s more chance of me f*cking you than Elton being on U.S. Idol .”

‘American Idol’ Producer Nigel Lythgoe Discusses Show’s Future

‘I’m reading so much baloney,’ Lythgoe says of rumor-filled search for new judges. By James Montgomery Nigel Lythgoe Photo: Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images Earlier this month, it was announced that Nigel Lythgoe would be returning to “American Idol” as an executive producer, ending a two-year absence during which the once-mighty show took a tumble, in terms of both ratings and cultural relevance. His return couldn’t have come during a more tenuous time for “Idol,” which has already seen the departures of iconic judge Simon Cowell , quickly improving Kara DioGuardi and, uh, genuinely nice Ellen DeGeneres . In fact, at the moment, the show has just one judge under contract for next season (that would be Randy Jackson) and has embarked on a lengthy, rumor-filled search to find two new talents to pair him with, with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and, until recently, Jennifer Lopez the reported frontrunners. Obviously, Lythgoe has his work cut out for him. Rumors abound that he’s contemplating a massive overhaul of the show, though in a new interview with Yahoo Music he kept his plans close to the vest while making it very clear that he believes “Idol” ‘s flagging fortunes can be reversed. “Listen, I wouldn’t be going back if I didn’t think the show could be turned around,” he said. “I do think if we put the focus back in the right place, which is on that young talent, [then] why wouldn’t it be successful?” Lythgoe also downplayed reports that J.Lo’s diva-like demands had taken her out of consideration for the “Idol” judges’ table, and cautioned that no one should believe anything they’ve read about just who will be joining Jackson on the show. It’s still very early in the process, after all. “I’m reading so much baloney in everything. There was something in the press saying Jennifer Lopez is a diva. That woman is in no way a diva, they don’t know what divas are if they think Jennifer Lopez is one. … There is so much rubbish going on,” he said. “My feeling is [the selection process] depends on the content of the panel, and the chemistry within it. I don’t care if they’re Romanian, as long as they fit in with the people around them, and we get a feeling that they know what they’re talking about. “All you want [in an “Idol” judge] is somebody who’s going to be honest with their decisions, not somebody who’s going to say things to be nice,” he continued. “And why would a star, in truth, want to come on that show and say, ‘You were crap tonight?’ because that star is going to be booed. … So it’s going to be really difficult. You just want honest people.” To that end, Lythgoe added that “Idol” might just choose a few lesser-known talents to serve as judges. After all, it worked in the past, and Lythgoe sees no reason why it couldn’t happen again. Such a move just might return the focus of the show back towards the contestants. “Don’t forget, when I started ‘American Idol,’ I brought over Simon Cowell, who no one had heard of, and a young man called Randy Jackson … and Paula Abdul, who a lot of people had said, well, her career is over,” he said. “And that was the start of a team that will be revered every time judges are spoken about. So it isn’t just about what you’ve done in your career, it’s about how you fit in with other people around you. And at the end of the day, it’s about the contestants and their talent, and it’s not about the judges.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Jennifer Lopez Reportedly Out As Potential ‘American Idol’ Judge

‘Her demands got out of hand,’ a source told People.com. By Kyle Anderson Jennifer Lopez Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images After a flurry of “American Idol”-related news about two weeks ago (lead by Ellen DeGeneres giving up her seat behind the judges’ table ), things have been relatively quiet on the “Idol” front. When DeGeneres stepped away, rumors swirled that Jennifer Lopez was the top candidate to take the job (with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler supposedly rounding out the roster). But according to People.com , Lopez’s name has been scratched from the list of potential candidates. “Her demands got out of hand,” a source told the site. “Fox had just had enough.” If this development proves to be true, it leaves one of the most popular shows on television still in a chaotic transition period. Show creator, executive producer and lead judge Simon Cowell has checked out in order to focus on his new program, “X-Factor.” Meanwhile, DeGeneres has already exited and rumors continue to suggest that Kara DioGuardi has also judged her last contestant on “Idol.” Though original executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is back in the fold (and wants to bring back Paula Abdul), the future of the show remains decidedly up in the air. With Lopez theoretically out, maybe the producers should consider Mariah Carey . According to her husband, Nick Cannon, Cary has talked about the possibility of working on the show (where she has served as a guest mentor in the past). “She says, ‘I would love to do that.’ She is one of the greatest singers of our time; she would be great,” Cannon told The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t know if she has enough time, though, but if they could work with her schedule, I know she would love to do ‘Idol.’ Let’s start the campaign!” Meanwhile, preparation continues on the upcoming 10th season of “American Idol.” Auditions are taking place in Austin, Texas, Wednesday (August 11) and are scheduled for San Francisco on August 19. The new season will premiere on Fox on January 12, 2011. Who would you like to see behind the judges’ table on “American Idol”? Let us know in the comments!
