‘American Idol’ Voters ‘Were Wrong’ On Jessica Sanchez, Steven Tyler Says

‘I think they thought she was safe,’ Randy Jackson adds, speaking to MTV News. By Kelly Marino “American Idol” Judges Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler Photo: MTV News Thursday night’s “American Idol” turned out to be the most shocking episode of the season thus far, proving one sure thing: America got it all wrong this week. The judges were quick to point that out when they unanimously decided to save 16-year-old singing prodigy Jessica Sanchez before she could even finish her last-chance performance song after receiving the lowest votes. Sanchez, who has impressed the judges week after week with renditions of songs well beyond her years, “slayed the biggest fish of the night,” according to Randy Jackson, with her performance of “Stuttering” by Jazmine Sullivan on Wednesday night. She even had guest mentor Akon predicting legend status one day, only fueling the fire that the singer, a.k.a. Bebe Chez, was well on her way to becoming a title hopeful. So what went wrong? “Well, I think [America] thought she was safe,” explained Jackson, who stopped by backstage to speak on Sanchez’s behalf. “I think they thought she was safe, I’m sure, and I think they thought Joshua was safe because those two alone, with Colton and some of the others, have been the most consistent. So, you know, yeah, I think they just forgot.” Probably the most inconsistent of the final seven who was a sure bet to be the one sent packing last night was Hollie Cavanagh. Despite her strong vocals, her nerves and stiff stage presence have led the little English southern belle to the bottom three for weeks now. But after her less than perfect performance of “Perfect” Wednesday night, she dodged the bullet completely this time around thanks to her devoted fans. “She’s got a lot of fans out there. A lot of people love her. I mean, look, all of these kids are very talented, and you just said it a minute ago,” Jackson said, turning to judge Steven Tyler. “They’re all individual, they’re all different.” “I mean, the proof is that one sings great, the other one’s style is crazy great,” added Tyler, comparing Cavanagh and Sanchez. “And then you got Elise, who just laughs all the time and just takes it just so effortlessly free. And there’s just so many different singers out there. That’s why it’s hard for me now. I like to let America judge. Tonight they were wrong.” So with the panel deciding to rescue San Diego’s savvy young diva, all seven contestants will return to the stage Wednesday night to continue to fight for the crown. But there’s one catch: Next week two finalists will be given the boot. Will Sanchez be one of the two to go, or will she take Jennifer Lopez’s advice and take the audience on a ride like they’ve never seen before? Who knows? Let’s see if America gets it right this time. Boy-Band Romance Rumors: Joe Jonas Dating A Model?

As Jonas is photographed with Brazilian model Jessica Pott, rumors swirl about One Direction’s Harry Styles and the Wanted’s Max George. By Jocelyn Vena Jessica Pott and Joe Jonas in New York on Tuesday Photo: Pacific Coast News For boy banders, it seems that spring has sprung and love is in the air. With so many rumors floating around, it seems like now is the time to do a Boy-Band Romance Report Card. So, MTV News has compiled a roundup of who’s dating whom, who’s nursing a broken heart and who is playing the field. Now, we’ll quit playing games with your heart and dive right into all the juicy details: Whom is Harry Styles Dating, Anyway? These days, One Direction is pretty busy traveling the globe, touring and promoting their album Up All Night , so any rumors of their romantic escapades seem to be as fleeting as their stops in various ports of call. In addition to chatter that Taylor Swift is crushing on him , American singer Lily Halpern opened up about the rumors she’s seeing Harry. She confirmed seeing him when he was in NYC for the band’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” but did she confirm whether they are a couple? “I met Harry through Big Time Rush. … We’ve been friends ever since [we met in March],” she told E! News . “He’s adorable. He’s a great, great guy. Who doesn’t have a crush on Harry Styles? He’s great. He’s a good friend. He’s a very good friend. He’s in Australia now. The time difference definitely makes it really hard … so we haven’t been able to talk on the phone or anything, but I’ve definitely heard from him.” “It’s hard. … I saw him this [past] weekend,” the NYC-based singer said of watching “Flubber” with him during some off-time. “I haven’t been able to see him that much. It would be very hard to have a relationship with someone [who travels a lot]. If he was here all of the time, things would probably be different, but we’re friends for now.” One Direction will be back in the States next month for their U.S. tour . Joe Jonas Has a New Lady?!? Well, it seems Joe Jonas has a new lass in his life. The Jonas brother was photographed strutting around Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood with Brazilian model Jessica Pott. He has reportedly been seeing the catwalker since December, but the twosome has been pretty stealthy about avoiding being photographed together. According to the Daily Mail , the two were first spotted together hanging in the Meatpacking District months ago, and her rep would only confirm, “They do know each other.” Jonas has been in and out of New York working his brothers, the currently single “How to Succeed” star Nick and married big bro Kevin, on their next album , a follow-up to 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times . Is Max George Engaged? The Wanted ‘s resident bad boy recently confirmed that he’s no longer betrothed to Brit actress Michelle Keegan, emphatically telling Ryan Seacrest, “No, no, no, not anymore” and adding that he is “absolutely” enjoying the benefits of his heartthrob status. However, her rep tried to clarify their relationship status to the Mirror, noting they are together, despite what Max implied in his interview. “Michelle and Max are still very much together as a couple, but they are both traditionalists and realized that there is no point in being engaged until they are in a position to plan a wedding,” the statement reads. Perhaps they put off a wedding because Max has been very busy chasing success. The Wanted just shot a music video for their single “Chasing the Sun,” and they will release their debut U.S. album on April 24. Related Artists One Direction Jonas Brothers

Bad Boy’s MGK And French Montana Headline XXL Freshman Concert

Iggy Azalea, Don Trip and Roscoe Dash take the stage to celebrate hip-hop magazine’s freshman class. By Rob Markman, with additional reporting by Nadeska Alexis Machine Gun Kelly performs at XXL ‘s Freshman show on Monday Photo: Steve Mack/ FilmMagic NEW YORK — On his 1986 classic “Eric B. is President,” the great Rakim famously rapped “MC means move the crowd,” and last night the 2012 XXL Magazine Freshman class did just that — well, the bulk of them anyway. On Monday night, the rap mag, in conjunction with sponsors like Monster Energy Drink and Reebok, held its annual rookie concert, showcasing Machine Gun Kelly , French Montana , Future, Danny Brown , Hopsin, Macklemore, Roscoe Dash, Iggy Azalea, Don Trip and Kid Ink. Things started a bit slow as the crowd filed in to the Best Buy Theater in Times Square. It was approximately 8 p.m. when L.A. MC Kid Ink took the stage to perform joints from his Wheels Up mixtape; Don Trip followed with a poignant performance that included his soul-bearing “Letter to My Son.” It was 9 p.m. when the night’s hosts, Hot 97’s Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg, introduced Iggy Azalea, XXL ‘s first-ever female freshman. She started with “My World” from her Ignorant Art mixtape and ended with her latest single “Murda Bizness” sans her Grand Hustle mentor T.I. “I wish Tip was here,” Iggy told MTV News on Monday just hours before she hit the stage. “It’s so sad that he’s not.” A few other ATL talents were in attendance though. Roscoe Dash ran through a collection of his own hits and high-powered collaborations like Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands” and Big Sean’s “Marvin & Chardonnay.” Then Seattle rapper Macklemore brought a tremendous amount of pageantry to the stage, being the only freshman to rock with a horn player. Hopsin came out to his “Ill Mind of Hopsin 4,” the song where he takes aim at Odd Future. “All these no-flow, gimmicky-ass, fired-up behaviors/ With wack beats and gap teeth like Tyler, the Creator,” he spit as the crowd cheered in approval. Hop continued to thrill the crowd by bringing out Tech N9ne to perform their collaborative single “Am I Psycho.” However, things took a turn when Detroit rapper Danny Brown took the stage with the tongue-in-cheek single, “Radio Song.” The crowd jeered in disapproval, but later turned around when he brought out snubbed- XXL freshman Schoolboy Q. As the night began to wind down, XXL rolled out their heaviest hitters. Atlanta’s Future, with an astronaut mascot in tow, promoted his upcoming April 17 album Pluto by rocking songs like “Tony Montana” and his current single “Same Damn Time.” Hometown hero French Montana was next up. Not only did the Coke Boy perform all of his underground favorites like “Choppa, Choppa Down” and “Everything’s a Go,” French and his team flooded the stage to deliver his biggest hit “Shot Caller.” He then brought out Bad Boy labelmate Red Caf

One Direction Prove Themselves During ‘SNL’ Debut

The boys also show off acting chops during ‘Manuel Ortiz Show’ sketch. By James Dinh One Direction performs on SNL Photo: NBC It’s usually the more seasoned artists that take to the “Saturday Night Live” stage as musical guests, but this season of the late-night NBC show has welcomed newer acts to provide entertainment mid-laughs. Back in January, Lana Del Rey raised eyebrows for delivering a pair of performances that didn’t sit right with critics. And on Saturday night, it was One Direction, who continued their Stateside domination with some smooth performances on the Sofia Vergara-hosted episode of “SNL.” Beginning with their mega-smash “What Makes You Beautiful,” One Direction worked each side of the Studio 8H stage. Dressed in blazers, vests and cardigans, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan crooned the feel-good track while showing off their boyish charm. When the boys reappeared later on for a performance of their song “One Thing,” they came with a bit more playfulness. As one of the groups behind the recent boy-band resurgence, the guys proved they have more than enough talent, teenage allure and overall packaging to keep them on the charts. 1D also got into the acting action when they made a brief appearance on “The Manuel Ortiz Show” skit. With the help of some wigs and mustaches, the British pop band acted as Spanish children of a rather dysfunctional family. And like all guests on Manuel’s show, the singers strutted onto the stage doing the skit’s signature dance. One Directioners got a double-dose of acting from the boys when they made their national television acting debut on Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” earlier in the evening. MTV News recently caught up with some of the show’s actors, who had nothing but positive things to say about the British music sensations. While iCarly herself, Miranda Cosgrove, found the bandmates “really funny,” another castmate, Nathan Krauss, admitted his initial uncertainty in regards to their acting chops. “Having One Direction on set was really cool. We didn’t really know what to expect from them, because we had heard that they didn’t really have any acting experience because they have a lot of lines and are almost in every scene,” the actor explains. “But we were all very pleasantly surprised. They did very, very well, especially Harry, because he had to pretend to be sick the whole time.” What did you think of One Direction’s “SNL” set? Tell us below! One Direction Fueled By ‘Adrenaline Rush’ On ‘SNL’

Boy band opens up to MTV News about their debut appearance on the NBC sketch comedy show. By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — One Direction knocked a major milestone off their bucket list on Saturday night when the guys took the famed stage of “Saturday Night Live” to perform. It was the first time anything resembling a boy band played the show since Valentine’s Day 2009 when the Jonas Brothers were the show’s musical guests. For a band whose chart-topping album is called Up All Night, it wasn’t difficult for the guys to spend the night wooing fans and non-One Directioners alike with their tracks “One Thing” and “What Makes You Beautiful.” The appearance proves that the guys have truly been embraced by the American public. MTV News was on set with the guys days before their episode aired and got a sneak peek at what the fivesome would be up to come show night. In addition to crooning their way into sleepless Americans’ hearts, they also got to shimmy their way through a talk-show-themed skit with host and “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara. They played the actress’ five kids, who learn that their father is sleeping with her incarcerated mother, whom she just met for the first time. “I think a lot of it is gonna be a big adrenaline rush,” group member Harry Styles told us during rehearsals. “The show’s so big over here. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun and I think we’re gonna have as much fun with it as we can.” Niall Horan noted that the guys loved appearing on the show because they really do enjoy goofing around. “This is our kind of show,” Horan told us on set, in between rehearsals and photo shoots. “You know, we like to have a bit of a laugh. This is our perfect kind of show [and] we get involved as much as we can.” What did you think of One Direction’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live”? Tell us in the comments! One Direction List Justin Timberlake As ‘SNL’ Favorite

‘This is our kind of show,’ Niall Horan tells MTV News in between rehearsals for band’s appearance on show. By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: MTV News New York — Live from New York, it’s One Direction ! The British boy banders are set to storm the stage in Studio 8H Saturday night when “Saturday Night Live” goes live with “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara as host. While viewers will have to shuffle their way through all those accents, One Directioners will be tuning in to see what the mop-topped fivesome will do. MTV News was on hand as the guys, who recently topped the charts with their U.S. debut album, Up All Night, were rehearsing and shooting promos for “SNL” with Vergara for their big late-night debut . “This is our kind of show,” Niall Horan told us on set, in between rehearsals and photo shoots. “You know, we like to have a bit of a laugh. This is our perfect kind of show [and] we get involved as much as we can.” Does that mean the guys might turn up in a skit? Well, fans will have to tune in to find out. “[Fans should expect] just us having a lot of fun on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ ” Liam Payne said before adding, “We might be making an appearance after performing as well. Who knows?” So are the guys funny? Harry Styles joked, “We think we are,” with Payne continuing, “We’re just those guys who think we’re funny.” With the possibility that the guys might be appearing on the show in a skit, they listed off some of their favorite bits from years past. Making the list? A rapping Natalie Portman, for one. “I like all the stuff Justin Timberlake’s done,” Zayn Malik added. What stands as Styles’ favorite? “I like the Beyonc

REVIEW: ATM Starts with a Good Idea and Ends with an Overdraft

Characters in horror movies get to be forgiven a few featherbrained actions for the sake of suspense. Why go into the creepy basement after you’ve realized the lights aren’t working? Why visit the decrepit mansion in the middle of nowhere after everyone’s warned you off? Why stick around the haunted house long after a rational person would have fled to a motel at least two states away? (The upcoming Cabin in the Woods  provides a clever, clever twist on this type of behavior.) Why? Because it’s scary. But even by the most lenient of genre standards, the behavior of the characters in David Brooks’s ATM is ludicrous enough to make anyone grind his or her teeth in frustration. Its trio of unlucky coworkers winding up a night out are trapped and menaced by a dude in a coat . He’s a big guy, but still — he’s not even carrying a chainsaw or axe or other murder-y implement to start, and it’s three against one. The film is built around one long standoff over the small hours of a frigid Midwestern night during which the man keeps his freezing and ever more desperate victims at bay inside a strip-mall ATM booth while we howl at the screen “Just walk out the door! The guy doesn’t look very fast!” The number of contrivances needed to extend this situation for as long as it plays out pile up until you pray for a twist that reveals the whole thing to be some extensive practical joke, excusing the silliness of everything, after which they all go to Denny’s for pancakes. Spoilers: There is no such twist. David (Brian Geraghty), the film’s protagonist, works at a finance firm where he spends his day apologizing helplessly to clients whose 401(k)s he hasn’t been able to save and failing to ask out his crush Emily (Alice Eve). He’s lured into sticking around for the office Christmas party by his obnoxious coworker Corey ( The Wackness ‘s Josh Peck), who informs him that Emily’s leaving for a new job and that David’s got one more evening to make his move. After a few false starts, David actually does, and he has arranged to give her a ride back to her place when Corey drunkenly insists on getting dropped off too. While cockblocking his way home, Corey bullies David into agreeing to stop for pizza, and then realizes he also needs to get cash. The three pull into a quiet parking lot with a pair of ATM machines inside a glass enclosure, and after they all end up taking refuge inside while Corey figures out his card isn’t working, they turn to go and see an ominous figure standing in the parking lot watching them, face obscured by a fur-trimmed hood. It’s a promising opening, between Corey’s charming/annoying advantage-taking, David’s passivity and Emily’s efforts to project receptiveness at her oblivious would-be suitor — these seem like actual characters, not just devices to enable the mechanics of a concept. And the claustrophobia of the main location, the way its florescent-lit everydayness becomes a barely adequate sanctuary from this mysterious threat (whoever the guy is, the three figure, he appears not to have a bank card that will get him through the security swiper) has cinematic appeal. But any tension the film has created dissipates quickly, around the time the trio watches their assailant casually smash another passerby’s head onto the pavement, and decide they should withdraw as much money as they can to try to pay the guy off. He’s just brutally murdered someone in front of them without provocation, and they offer him $500 and some earrings in exchange for walking away? At that point, has he not made it very clear he’s either crazy or has already made the decision to kill everyone there? ATM  has an idea, but it’s not one that can sustain a whole feature (this is director Brooks’s first, from a screenplay by Chris Sparling, writer of the similarly minimal Buried ). Its minimalism raises all the wrong kinds of questions — not about why this is happening to these three people, a topic they fruitlessly debate as they try to wait out the night, but why a security guard would pull up a few dozen yards away from a group of people screaming for help in the middle of a freezing night, get out of his car and blithely ask if they’re OK. Or why no one brought a cell phone. Or why Emily seems to be there just to beg the two men not to go outside and not to leave her unprotected (“You can’t leave me in here!”). Or why they would ever take their eyes off their attacker for a second. In order to keep its situation going, the film has its characters act increasingly foolish, right down to the ridiculousness of its last reveal, the biggest, most nonsensical contrivance of them all.  ATM shows an initial flicker of intelligence, which makes its spiral into absurdity all the more disappointing. Like late-night-drunk pizza, this is something you’d be better off skipping in favor of just eating some cereal at home. Follow Alison Willmore on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
